We were there on Friday night after the YBR World Finals. I called ahead to let them know we were going to have 20 in our party. About 5 minutes after arriving, they had a table ready and we were being seated. Within a couple minutes we had bread and sweet tea on the table. A short time later we had our food. The jalapeño sausage was really good, the ribs were very good & meaty, and the brisket was absolutely the best I've ever had. Both the food and the service was great. I've eaten BBQ all over the country and Joe Allen's rates right at the top. I would highly recommend it and I will definitely go back the next time I am in Abilene. read more

My Wife and I took my Mom here on a Sunday for lunch. The food was very good. I had the porter house pork chop,okra, everything was real good. Service was also good. The only complaint that we had was when the front door opened we had a blast of cold air. read more

The wife and I stopped by here when we were in the area and both agreed that it was some of the best BBQ we've ever had!! The prices were great and the staff was amazingly friendly. We will definitely go back if we are ever in the area again!!!! I think they need to take their ribs to the annual Rib Cook off in Reno, NV (Sparks, NV). We stopped at Joe Allen's in Abilene because we had heard it was famous (not infamous) for its tasty barbecue .....and it did not disappoint! We had chopped brisket sandwiches and added their delicious barbecue sauce. We shared an order of fried okra and a side of cabbage and highly recommend both. Decor was rustic and interesting. I ate here tonight with my family while waiting for visiting hours to start again at Hendrick. My brother is critically ill and when our waiter, Jeffrey Smith, found out he stepped up and offered many kind words and a meal for my brother. Never before have I seen such generosity and kindness shown for a stranger. He's the best waiter we've ever had. The food we had was perfect from the bread to the fresh salads and house made dressing to the perfectly marbled and cooked to order steaks. I'm still giving this place 4 stars with a slight reservation.. Lately I have ordered the steaks. I find that the meat is of variable quality. A couple of months ago a ribeye was perfectly cooked (medium rare) and tender. Recently my ribeye was ordered medium rare, but was over cooked on the edges and barely medium rare in the very center. And the meat was not as tender as the last time. This is the variable quality that one gets a a non-prime beef restaurant, but for the dollar, Joe Allen's is still a good place for steak and an excellent place for barbecue. read more

Very disappointing! My chicken fried steak was tender, but the coating was soggy on the bottom. The plate was presented with the bowl of gravy sitting on top on the steak. How do I know where that bowl has been?! The cabbage was OK, but had obviously been in a steam table a long time. My wife's burger was unseasoned and she said it tasted like a frozen patty. The cheese cost $1 extra and wasn't anywhere near melted; just put on after the burger was cooked. Then, we had to fight flies all during our meal. We won't be going back. read more

Well guys I had my first encounter with racism and segregation lastnight at Joe Allens Pit bbq. It was almost like I stepping back into the 1950s. It started with being sat in the corner of the restaurant five tables away from any of the other customers, which normally I would be ok with but being that my girlfriend and I were the only Hispanic couple in the whole place it just seemed like it was done purposely. But even after that I was still willing to give the place a chance. That was until 20 mins had gone by and none of the waitresses bothered to greet us, take our drink or food order which even that may have not bothered me as much but in that same 20 mins two white couples had been seated and already had there food. So after 25 mins had gone by with us just sitting there with our menus in front of us I had enough of the blatant disrespect. I have never felt so embarrassed and angry at the same time. Needless to say I'll never try to eat there again. read more

In town for the weekend? Don't bother eating here. My husband and I asked the front desk where to eat & this was her suggestion (we had already had a wonderful steak at Perinis earlier in the week). I ordered the one inch Rib-eye, med-rare, my husband ordered the T-Bone, medium. Service was good & attentive. Steaks came out, didn't ask for us to even cut and check them. Mine came out pretty rare for a med rare steak, but my husbands medium steak was still cold & very raw. He sent it back for medium and then it came out almost burnt. I cut off the pieces I could eat, but my steak was tasteless & very bland. I don't think that they know what a season would look like. My husband was done with the nonsense. Our waiter explained that the cook told him earlier that day that he was going to screw up all if his orders tonight & upon hearing this we asked to see the manager. We showed him both our steaks & he offered to comp my husbands meal only. We picked up some crazy bread from Little Caesars on the way back to our hotel. The bread was well cooked and had WAY more flavor!! Go to Perinis, you'll be happy you did! read more

first things first...they had to wipe the table that she sat us at, it clearly had not been done when the last eaters left....bathroom stalls didnt lock....got the 3 meat meal at dinner time (730pm). there were very few people there. the bread is homemade bread and cornbread, a lil dry but overall ok. in my 3 meat meal i got jalepeno sausage, ham, and sliced brisket. the JALEPENO SAUSAGE IS HORRIBLE!!!! it was so disgusting that it almost ruined my appetite. the ham and brisket were ok...brisket was dry but had good flavor, not tough or chewy, jsut right. the ham was good. it was all room temperature, not hot, however, the fresh steaming, straight out the grease, sweet potatoe fries were delicious. they were the best thing on the whole plate. i also had corn, but really how hard is it to mess up canned corn? another dining partner ate the turkey sandwich; said it was delicious and a very large portion. and the other dinner party had he chopped beef sandwich and also, said it was good. the bbq was more sweet than tangy and didnt look very appealing in a unlabeled ketchup bottle but was decent enough. they had to wipe the bottle also because it was covered in dried up bbq....we had to go find a waitress to help in the matter cuz they were all standing around having casual conversation in the food prep area.... i gave a 3 star because service wasnt great and the horrifying sausage was enough to make me never wana go back. visit was 12/3/13 read more
