This is a review for the NEW Joe Bean on Blossom Road (which is fully open for business), not the former location on University (which is no longer open). I liked Joe Bean on the one occasion I got to visit their former location on University Avenue, and in some respects, I think this move is a nice change for them. They have way more space, and it feels like a great place that could host events relating to the production and tasting of coffee - not to mention, much more parking! The new facility features nice large windows, a sunny morning vibe, beautiful decor, a great selection of really appealing coffees, snacks, bags of coffee for home use, and lots of cheery plants. I had a latte with oat milk and Ethiopia Misty Valley coffee, for $5. The latte and my friend's Americano took a good while to be prepared (the two staff working told us apologetically and nicely that they only had one machine to do all the work of supporting the many people present that day), but when it was done, it was absolutely worth it. A latte of this quality is the true reason you go to a place like Joe Bean as opposed to Starbucks. This is what the movement of really high-level coffee experience should really be all about. I cannot compare it to any other latte I've had in Rochester. This alone puts Joe Bean as the best coffee in town in my opinion - Ugly Duck, Glen Edith, Fuego, Coffee Connection, etc., I'm looking at you! The ambiance was industrial and somewhat hidden along the side of a large commercial looking building with a warehouse feel from the outside. There is parking out front if you drive along the side of the building past other businesses. The quality of the beans seems incredible, which is why I stopped in. Being a strong enthusiast of coffee, collecting beans in my travels around the country and the world to enjoy at my home, I have been in many coffee shops and to many roasters over the years. One of my favorite parts is connecting with others who also have a passion and appreciate the product. However, that is where my dissatisfaction lies for this business. My greeting was terse and my enthusiastic inquiries about the various beans was met with disengaged and pretentious replies that all of the beans were great. I realize this and that is why I was visiting. Despite multiple attempts to engage in conversation to learn more about the taste characteristics and growing regions, I continued to be met with dismissive comments or silence. Maybe I did not appear to be knowledgeable but I left feeling that I was not worthwhile to the staff member who was working when I visited. I would not return to give business when such poor service was provided during my visit. So much to love about Joe Bean! I've loved them in all their iterations and they are truly the pioneers of third wave coffee here in Rochester. They currently have coffee subscriptions, a space on Blossom Road, a roastery, and lots of bags available for purchase. I remember when I had my first experience here and didn't understand any of the words on the menus. "Who's a chemex?" Anyways - we've come a long way since Joe Bean first burst on the coffee scene! I went to the Blossom road location pre-COVID to work, but unfortunately had to move myself elsewhere as there are no outlets at this location. Do I miss the old space? Yes I DO! But this new space is great in other ways and is super sunny and still in the same neighborhood. The coffee is forever the star of the show and I cannot wait to see how Joe Bean keep innovating into the future and leading the way for other great coffee spots to take off as well. An open space with lots of sunlight when the weather is right, this is a good place to hang with friends over a cup of coffee. I enjoyed my pour over with the bean from Costa Rica. It came in a jug and I drunk it from a mason jar--nontraditional but I liked it. The coffee felt light-bodied in the mouth and it was not acidic at all. There are pastries for sale but we brought in bagels from Balsam. Bathrooms are in the back, which means walking through other sections of the space. Like, I saw they have free tasting on Saturdays between 11 am and 1pm. FYI the women's room has lotion, tampons, and baby wipes available. read more

Decided to check out the new Joe Bean since they moved. First off the same great coffee and choices and it's clear they have moved their focus to just roasting and selling their coffee. From a coffee house perspective the charm is completely gone. I came there excited to order Siphon Brewer Coffee only to find they abandoned they brewing style. Also other types and forms of coffee were now off the mine as well. Even worse when we got our coffee they were no long served in coffee cups but now Masson jars! It was like what the heck, let alone the experiences as ruined. Needless to say I won't be back! What a disappointment. read more

The tea itself was a little funkier than I was expecting, but it still hit the spot on a chilly afternoon. I was also bummed to come in so full from lunch, because their bowl selections looked so tasty as well. I definitely didn't take full advantage of their menu like I wished I could, but they still provided a wonderful place to chat and get some work done thanks to their comfy tables and chairs and free wifi. FROZEN strawberries (cold in the center!). I was so disappointed with the food after being so hyped up by the tasty latte I had and the hip interior. I thought for sure the food must be great. Such is not the case. Please, Joe Bean, invest in some higher quality bread if you're going to make a "tartine" and please use fresh ingredients. My table-mate had a fancy hot cocoa which was not nearly as chocolatey as he would have expected/liked. His salmon egg on an English muffin thing was pretty good. I only went their once and was turned off by the uber snooty attitude of those who ran the place. I guess walking in with a McDonald's cup1/3 full and asking if they could fill it up might not have met their standards...ok, not really. I was there only once. Whenever this was, well over a year ago, maybe even 2, maybe 3 -- no not that many...hmmm -- oh gosh, who cares...... the one gal who I believe was one of the owners, had worked at, or run, a coffee shop in Webster, which I liked quite a bit, and visited often. This is my favorite coffee place in Rochester. They change menu seasonally. Recently moved to a new place near the old location. Latte is still in very high standard and lots of bean options. I haven't been back to Rochester for a year and really glad this place is still here. Blueberry muffin tasted really awesome. I remember in the past, they offer coffee workshops and some latte art competitions, the always-smiling barista told me they will still hold these things in the new place.. yay!! read more

I have, for years, considered Joe Bean to have the best coffee in Rochester. (Full disclosure: former barista from another cafe here!) I've been getting their shaken cold brews and pour overs since back when they were located in Webster and only in the city at farmer's markets; they never disappoint. Their coffees are delicate and complex (with detailed flavor notes to help you decide), and they skew towards light roasts, aka they are strong on caffeine! The beans make a great gift for the coffee lover in your life! I love their shaken cold brews in summer (that head of coffee foam, tho!), and their pour-overs in cooler temps. I've heard more than one person describe this place as "snobby," but my experiences here have been the opposite. The baristas are friendly, professional, and helpful. When I used to come here to study, they would always engage me in interesting conversation. Joe Bean has recently expanded their space for more dining tables, and with it, their limited menu of small plates has been rounded out to include breakfast, lunch, and dinner fare. On my most recent visit for breakfast, I tried their egg, bacon, and mashed potato stack, topped with a rich gravy; it was awesome. My mom ordered their savory toast-- 4 slices, two with tomato jam, and two with butter and slices of watermelon radishes. She thought it had too much butter, but still enjoyed it. We so obviously had never been there and were looking around. Chick behind the counter? Immediately irritated with us. We hesitantly approached her and she shoved a couple clipboards in our direction. One had flavors and the other had options....kind of. I had such a bad feeling about this, I should have left. My friend made the mistake of asking what they had brewed and she rolled her eyes and said something about everything made to order. I asked how to just get a large, strong coffee. She showed me clipboard 1 again with the flavors and clipboard 2 with no sizes. God she was so unhelpful!!! I cannot state this enough!!! I had been up for over an hour with no coffee! WHERE IS YOUR COMPASSION, WOMAN?!!! Moving on. My friend said "Just make me something. Whatever you recommend." He was obviously flustered. She still didn't offer any kindness or help! I chose a "flavor". She barked our order to another person and I saw him set up pour over coffees. WOW! This would have been so helpful had she just mentioned "we only do pour over brew coffee". Another person in our party was able to order a latte. Also would have been helpful to know this was an option! Now, pour over coffee takes forever. I get that. Thermometers and gentle cooing are involved. We were already pre-caffeine and forced to run a mental gauntlet just to order coffee and now we waited 15 minutes more for it. These are things you should warn customers about, but we've already established the non-sh*t-giving here. Coffees arrived. YES! COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE! We start looking around for the cream/sugar/honey/stirrer/napkin area. Snotface walks away. She is so done with us. The guy that made our coffee takes pity and comes over and says "Looking for accoutrements?" I swear to god that is the word he used. I have witnesses! He then has to HUNT for cream and sugar. He starts looking through the fridges and cabinets. It was....a...production. My friend an I exchange some extreme looks and I am now screaming in my head. SO CLOSE! I have coffee in my hand but still cannot drink it! Nice(r) dude brings us what I think was rice milk and a tiny thimble of sugar. I wish I had snapped a quick photo of this darling wee "milk" glass and tiny spoon, etc. Coffee accoutrement for elves! So cute. We did the best we could with it and got the hell out of there. As soon as we got outside we started in with the "What just happened in there? To us? WTF? OMG! LOL!". We told this story so many times since then. It's a thing now! "Reese! Tell them about what happened to you at that Joe Bean place!" Seriously. Thanks for the comic relief! I visited Joe Bean for the first time. I was really surprised by this place! The ambiance and vibe are interesting. Modern with a rustic flare. I had the opportunity to try 4 different beers offered here. All were good. I particularly like the Bam Biere. Unfortunately I have not had any coffee or food... yet. This place is, like, Hipsterville, USA. I mean, the guy who just left had a three-inch, braided rat tail emerging from the side of his head! So. Fucking. Hip. Tribal tattoos, plug-style ear accessories, Apple products, DSLRs, beards...HATS galore! No, of course I'm not cool enough for this place, but I don't feel like anyone's looking down at me for wearing flip flops, which is nice, for a change. In fact, the guy getting coffee right now is streaming a football game on his phone, full blast. Perhaps this (Rochester) isn't the ideal location for a coffee establishment of this magnitude... The website and signage tout this place as a "coffee bar" - you never see the words "cafe" or "coffee house." And there's a reason: this place is set up exactly like a bar. There are no sofas, the only La-Z-Boy in the whole place is me, and all the seating is bar-style (high stools around a central location). The decor consists of well-chosen driftwood, exposed brick, local art, coffee, and coffee accessories. The baristas are more passionate and legitimate (and obsessive) than any other coffee brewers in Rochester; I talked with one at the Brighton Farmers Market once and he said he was going to a baristas' convention in Boston. Is that a real thing? Anyway, the coffee here tastes like it is made by someone who knows what he's doing. My barista informed me that the soy milk he was using in my cappuccino was made especially for baristas. Why? I have no clue. But it was good. The espresso itself was flawless. It's the first time I've voluntarily drunk (yes, it is correct grammar) a cup of coffee without wanting to add sugar. Sure, I was directly influenced by the fact that Joe Bean does not have any sweeteners or creamers directly visible from the counter, but the coffee here is so good and non-bitter that sweetener isn't really necessary. Apart from the expertly brewed espresso drinks, Joe Bean also features two types of cold coffee (Cold Brew - $3.50, Kyoto Slow Drip - $4) and three multiple cup options (32 oz. Chemex - $6.00, 42 oz. French Press - $8.00, 18.6 oz. Syphon - $$8.50). The single cup Hario Pour Over is $3.25 and you can select from three different coffees of the day. Joe Bean also has a variety of locally made baked goods, as well as tiramisu made with Joe Bean's house roasted coffee. Easily my favorite coffee shop in Rochester.....on second thought it actually seems inadequate to call Joe Bean just a coffee shop. I'd say it is more of Rochester's coffee mecca and the place that rises above the pack with their service and quality. No frills coffee done properly with baristas who really care about their craft and make the experience a complete joy. Joe Bean has a very comfortable environment to sit down and savor your drink with rotating art on the walls. I don't disagree that it can be a bit hipster-y at times, but I have never felt out of place sitting down and talking with the baristas or the other patrons. Since the opening of their bar last year, I have gone through most of their different profile roasted varieties of coffee with my Aeropress at home (Mexican Chiapas is my favorite) and have sat down bunches of times to leisurely enjoy coffee made fresh for me. Either by pourover, espresso shots or their unique for Rochester Kyoto cold brew coffee I'm always happy walking away knowing that I just enjoyed the best coffee products in town. The Kyoto really produces a coffee unlike any other with an extra rich taste that is hard to get any other way. Joe Bean deserves 6 Stars, if only Yelp offered 6! If you love coffee, and have not been to Joe Bean yet... get there! The very first time we went there (about 3 years ago) I was nervous. I normally drink coffee with cream and a little sweetener. There was no creamer and no sweetener/sugar around. The guys that run the place are great and they will explain everything to you. If it's your first time, I recommend getting a standard "Coffee Flight". You get to sample 3 different types of coffee using a pour-over method. You'll receive descriptions of the 3 coffees, and they'll even instruct you on which order to try them in. A "flight" is more than enough for my husband and I to share (though truth be told, I would drink the whole thing myself no problem!) and it is a huge bargain at a mere $7. You are having the Godiva of Coffees and it is blissfully flavorful and wonderful. As I said before, my very first visit, I was nervous because I saw no cream or sugar. I sheepishly asked about it and Ben simply asked me to "taste the coffee for what it is first". Which, I did. Joe Bean is the ONLY place that I drink black coffee. It's succulent. It's basically coffee science going on right here in Rochester! One of my favorites at Joe Bean is their incredibly delicious and flavorful Kyoto Cold Brew. Served in super cute small bottles, this is a real winner. Sometimes I even pick up extras to bring home. Joe Bean also has Espresso, Lattes, they also have Happy Hour Snacks and Dinners now. They're always entranced by the aromas, selection, brewing methods, and of course, taste. On my most recent visit my friend pointed out how she knew the staff was legit. Not because of their immense knowledge (though they have that) or because of the delicious coffee they produce, but because they all rock some fine facial hair. Not just any mustaches (because any hipster can have that), but finely groomed and curly ones. I'm not sure how this relates to good coffee, but I'll trust her judgement. Maybe it's because the barista suggested I try my coffee black before adding cream and sugar like I normally do and I found it to be wonderful without the added ingredients. I considered subtracting more because there is not much of a food menu and a larger selection of seating would've been nice but I couldn't bring myself to do it because the coffee is so great. While I'm sure that my palate for coffee will never be as sophisticated as that of Joe Bean regulars, I do appreciate good coffee. Joe Bean has opened my eyes to the science and art of coffee. The people at Joe Bean really take pride in this artistry and I respect that. To the untrained eye, the place seems almost like an apothecary. Seemingly brewing coffee in an Erlenmeyer Bulb (nerd alert), I initially thought the place was gimmicky. That was until I tasted their coffee. Now I'm a firm believer. Make no mistake, they certainly know what they are doing. Joe Bean is the Walter White of the coffee game. Now I have no qualms drinking Joe Bean coffee the way it's supposed to be, without added cream or sugar. I can't swear off Starbucks or even Dunkin Donuts coffee entirely, but i'll be back to Joe Bean more frequently for a more sophisticated brew. It's definitely the premier spot in Rochester to grab quality coffee. A handful of my coworkers swear by it and will not buy beans anywhere else.They also offer wines and draft beers specially picked by the owners. I was able to try some of their beers and wines and they were all excellent. While I never thought I would grab an adult beverage at a coffee shop, I think Joe Bean will change this, as it's definitely not just your typical neighborhood coffee shop. read more

This was my first visit. I was between two appointments in the city and heard great things about Joe Bean. I just had a cup of herbal tea and a cookie. I am quite the tea snob, but the attention to detail as to how it was prepared along with the presentation was excellent. The customer service was fantastic. I was warmly greeted and had a few check ups from the staff at the bar. Not only are the employees friendly, but so are the patrons. I noticed so many people engaging in conversations that didn't come in together. I had no idea that they had such a wonderful food menu as well. They can also cater to Vegan, gluten free which is a plus for me, as I can not consume dairy or gluten. It was lovely to see the substitutions they could make. The decor was warm & cozy. She has sent us their coffee. Tiger Stripe espresso - which is deceiving. It's not a dark oily highly roasted bean. It is definitely a lighter roast. I could smell it through the bags in our mailbox. It was freshly roasted 11/11. You can smell and taste chocolate and caramel notes - no BS. This is as good a coffee as I've had. Really excellent. I've used a french press, bialetti, auto drip. They have some of the best, if not the best, locally roasted coffee in town, and they charge ya for it ;), but in the realm of "life's to short for bad coffee" it's so worth it. The people behind the bar are trained, and they are experts at their craft. The espresso is precisely pulled from state of the art machines and the coffee is poured with control of water flow, temperature, rate, and time. Great place with good coffee! It's definitely a higher-end coffee bar. The staff is really nice, the coffee is super fresh, and everyone is helpful. Personally, I like my coffee a little darker and smoother than what they were pouring that day, but it can't be denied that even the fruity roasts were quality. I also tried their vegan cranberry gingersnap cookies. They were very different; super moist and chewy. You couldn't just scarf them down without choking, so you had to chew and chew on them. I'm not complaining at all, it was a fantastic way to make me slow down and really enjoy the complex flavors and texture of the cookie. And it definitely paired well with the coffee they were serving that day. The ambiance is incredible and the decoration is scarce with a steampunk vibe. It's a great place for one or two people to hang out at, and maybe a maximum party of 4 could enjoy it too. Definitely a good place to check out in Rochester! read more

We were here couple times for coffee and every single visit was a treat. These people apparently knows what they are doing! Great collections of coffee beans and ways of making it, it is just unbelievable. We bought a pound of Costa Rica beans for our siphon brewer and it just turn out so fruity and delicious. Oh how I love me some Joe Bean!! It began as my favorite place to sip coffee and catch up on work, but now it's also a great place to eat and grab a drink with friends. Their best product will forever be their coffee beans and it's where their true passion lies. However, the food is great and they also have an excellent beer and wine selection. (Great cheeses too!) If your love for coffee is solely based in frappuccinos and caramel macchiatos, then unfortunately this not the place for you. (No judgement...I like them too!) However, if you get excited about things like coffee bean origins, roasting techniques and a well-crafted cappuccino, then prepare to be impressed. These people know their stuff and will happily share their knowledge and passion with you. Go when you have 5-10 minutes to wait as they do not have drip coffee readily available. But I promise it's worth it! Atmosphere is very chill. Wear a flannel, bring you mac and you'll fit right in. (Kidding...kind of.) This place is a gem and we're lucky it's in Rochester. After looking at their menu, we thought this would be a really good place for brunch. However, our order was under cooked. Kareem ordered the Pumpkin Pancakes and the first pancake in his stack was still doughy. I ordered the Sourdough Apple Cinnamon Pancakes, but my last pancake in the stack was Doughy(which really sucked once all the sauce soaked in). I think the flavor combinations were interesting. Kareem's pancake had a cherry compote that was sort of sweet and sour which I think worked really well with the pancakes that were cooked. I think my pancakes could stood to have more cinnamon/ sugar. I had really high expectations for this place, but I was unfortunately disappointed. I'm not sure if it's because we ordered delivery or what. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon. Outside of the under cooked pancakes, it was okay. read more

After getting rave reviews from a friend, I was super excited to try Joe Bean during my summer of caffeinating my way across Rochester. I'm glad I did -- it is abundantly clear that they know a thing or two about caffeinated beverages. The espresso menu is expansive, comprehensive, and definitely caters to coffee "snobs" -- under each menu item, Joe Bean provides the blend's flavor notes. My cappuccino was very flavorful and roasted perfectly. Though I didn't try any of the food offerings, they do have a pretty large menu. Service was friendly without being intrusive. The barista brought out a large glass of water for me with my drink, and returned to my table every so often to refill it, which I appreciated. Atmosphere was really nice, the decor is generally minimalist and the yellow walls are cheery without being distracting. There's plenty of space between tables and several different seating options to choose from. Maybe this is common knowledge, but there are very few outlets at Joe Bean. So if you're the type of person who prefers to be plugged in (literally and metaphorically) at coffee shops, take that into consideration before choosing Joe Bean. read more

They have high quality - great tasting coffee for sure, but going here for the first time and paying $3.50 for 10 ounces of coffee is definitely too high a price. Would not recommend going here for to go coffee due to the limited selection and high prices. read more
