I don't drink coffee, so I suppose my opinion about coffee places is a bit under-seasoned, but Union Place seems like a good one. Super high ceilings, local art on the walls, comfortable seats, and friendly folks behind the counter. While I don't drink coffee, I was purchasing nine pounds of coffee (it's a stocking stuffer in our family) for other people. It seems like Union Place typically has an excellent and varied selection of different beans, but it was too close to Christmas and they were running low on it all. My friend came out from behind the counter, and helped my navigate what was still available. I got a lot of beans, they ground them for me for the right filters (while I sat in a very comfortable chair), and I was out of there. If you actually drink coffee, I bet you'll like this place even better than I do. read more

I had such a nice experience here, it's a small place with a couple of tables and a section to the side with beans, tea, and products. I did not get any on this visit but they have some really fun flavor options! The best part of my visit was the excellent service. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. After sitting for a while, you could tell that many of the customers (both for the cafe and store) were regulars. During my visit there was a local artist showcase and event fliers for some of the local community organizations. Would recommend for anyone looking for a high quality, local Roastery. read more

I had such a wonderful experience yesterday at Union Place. I went in looking to quickly grab some beans in between other errands. While scanning through the options, I was approached by a woman who patiently explained how their beans are organized (lightest roast to darkest) and highlighted some of the more interesting roasts and blends. She told me about a special single origin project they had worked on and -- in a move that really won me over -- brought me over a sample of one of the roasts I was considering. The woman at the cashier was also super nice and excited to see that I had chosen one of her favorites. I left Union Place feeling uncharacteristically enthusiastic about my purchase and generally just overcome with a feeling of gratitude that such places exist in Rochester. We just had a terrific coffee (and tea) at this lovely spot, tucked away in a food wholesale market. Its a warm, high-ceilinged space, that has both their retail and their roastery. I had a really nice dark roasted coffee that was just to my liking, as that type of roast can sometimes be more "burnt" than dark. This had a good full body but none of the bitter aftertaste that some dark roasts can have. My wife enjoyed a very good English Breakfast tea and after we finished, we purused their coffee making equipment, beans and other spices. The young lady that took care of us was knowledgable, very helpful and was happy to recommend what proved to be great choices. A great spot and would highly recommend it! read more

I absolutely loved stopping in here before Christmas! We stocked up on a bunch of different beans and had them freshly ground for drip coffee and French press. I couldn't believe how many options there were. There are also a few chairs and small tables if you want to sit and have a coffee while you're there. I love everything about this place! The beans are fresh and the prices are reasonable. I like that they offer a low/soft acid coffee option. Each staff member I've dealt with has been pleasant and helpful. They have punch cards to earn a free pound of coffee, and you even get a fresh, free cup of coffee on your visit! I buy my coffee here exclusively. I stumbled upon this place as it's sort of hidden off two major roads in Henrietta. I get the 'butter caramel' beans and grind them fresh daily; I brew with a French press. There really is no better flavored bean in the area. It's perfect- it's not over powering and not artificial tasting. I find I don't need to add anything to my coffee and the number of comments I get daily about 'how amazing my coffee smells' is a true testament of this stuff!!! read more

I get the same quality and freshness as I would at the way more expensive and trendy places without feeling as uncool and out of place around the tattooed and mustachioed hipsters who work and shop at those places. They people at Union Place are great. Real life example: sometime in the winter I came in with my two young kids (infant and three years old). While buying coffee and chatting with Laurie, the owner, I must have dropped my three-year-old's mittens and I left without realizing it. Laurie found them and saved them, jotting my kids' names down on a post-it note she stuck to the mittens.
