What brought me to Joe Canal's Liquor was a search for what is an unusual flavored vodka I needed as an ingredient in a certain cocktail; fig flavored vodka, to be specific. I had tried all over, and most had never heard of it. But it was suggest to me that I try Joe Canal's Liquor, because if it exists, they have it or will quickly get it. So, I first wandered down the stores vodka section looking over what seemed like hundreds of varying flavored then suddenly, to my shocking surprise, there it was: Fig Vodka! Joe Canal's Liquor is set up more like a warehouse that a liquor store. Boxes and shelved booze hither and yon all over the place. CRAZY PRICES!!! The manager McGill at this liquor store is so severely rude. I purchased two bottles of Buffalo Trace Bourbon at this Millville location, and it was more than double the cost of any other Canals! It was a different price on the shelf than it rang up at the register. They are totally scamming people into paying DOUBLE THE COST! When I called and asked about the price difference he said and I quote, "it's priced that way because thats what I want to price it." He is completely ignorant to the value of liquor and is Willy Nilly scamming people by having different prices on the shelf than what it rings up as. If I could give them zero stars I would. Normally, I love going into this Joe Canal's - most everyone there is really kind and helpful; but today - 1pm, Jan. 29, 2018 - the manager was extremely rude, evasive and arrogant . . . because of his rotten, non-customer supportive attitude, I went to another Joe Canal's! I hope the owner of this Canal's reads this and takes some sort of disciplinary action. I don't think I will ever shop here again unless I hear from the owner or overall manager. This particular Joe Canal's must be the step-child of the Canal's chains because it's been here for 10 years and still isn't on their website. Bizarre. Anyway, like all Joe Canal's, this one rocks. It's a huge warehouse of all kinds of alcohol. Wines from all over the world- some of which is bought in bulk and sold for a song. Love my 3 dollar bottles of tempranillo when they are available. They've always got some good cheapo wines on clearance, but it's hit or miss though. They do have a sommelier at Joe Canal's so you can always get advice if you need it. They also have a full complement of liquor, kegs, drink mixes, snacks, etc. They've also got great selection of beers. Tons of varieties are available pre-refrigerated, and many more micro brews and imports are avalailable uncooled. They have some of my favorites such as Belgian Krieks and Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stoudt. I'm not a big drinker and picky about what I'll drink, so I appreciate Joe Canal's wide selection of the unusual. read more

If I could give this place a no star, I would. I just left after shopping with my boyfriend to get a bottle of wine for my mom for Christmas, my boyfriend was buying so I didn't even bother to bring my purse at all. Shelby, a worker, asked to see both of our ID's. I calmly asked why I would need ID if I wasn't the one purchasing the alcohol. She called, I'm assuming, her manager, Josh. Josh asked my boyfriend for ID and it was handed and asked me for it. I repeated again, why would I bring ID if I'm not buying and the alcohol isn't for me. Tried to buy beer there yesterday. It was one price on the tag. When i was paying for it at cashier, it was different (higher) price. Manager came. Said that higher price was correct. Walked with the guy to the tag and showed him what i am taking about. The guy very quickly removed the tag and told me it's an old price. I told him that in respectful places in that kind of situation, the store honors the old price for this specific purchase. He said, no, no, we go by what price in the system. The Canal's liquor store chain in South Jersey is held in such high regard by the locals, that there was bound to be someone who tried to hijack the brand. It's a convoluted tale, but it's best chalked-up to a "family squabble". That's why there is a "Canal's Discount Liquors" chain and a "Joe Canal's Discount Liquors" chain. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a "Bob Canal's" lurking out there somehwere. They're all related, but not the same company. That said, the Joe Canal's in Millville stocks a diverse selection of beer, wines and liquors. Better than your run-of-the-mill liquor store . Good prices and because they are a high volume store, you won't get skunky, stale beer most of the time. Be careful in the parking lot. People trying to beat the traffic light zoom through the lot as a shortcut--with little regard for patrons--in their eagerness to get into the Cumberland Crossing Shopping Center, which is adjacent to Canal's. read more

This is my preferred local liquor store in that it has the best variety and generally the best prices. A good selection of beer and wine to suit most simple to moderate palates. This used to be Shop Rite's liquor warehouse. It has that club store atmosphere. Check out lines are narrow and often backed up. The help is friendly enough. As someone else mentioned, the parking lot is problematic. The location of the store is not optimal as it is just past the strip mall entrance. Lots of traffic attempts to beat the light and scoot through. The speed bumps have done nothing to deter that. For some time the back entrance was closed to thwart this, but that penalized Canal's customers as that is the out for many of them. Problematic is all that there is. read more

I live locally shop here frequently over the last six years. Pricing used to be pretty consistent with other liquor stores in the area until about a year ago. I hope that it was a fluke or perhaps a series of mistakes when pricing, but that does not seem to be the case. Beer prices aren't bad and they have a decent selection of craft beers. However, if you buy whiskey, do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Pricing isn't just high, it's irrational . Example, Buffalo trace, $58 for a 750 ml, on "manager special" for $49. This is a $30 bottle of whiskey anywhere else I. The area. Blanton's, regular, not the gold. $200. I bought this last fall for less than $60. Either the management doesn't know what they're doing or they are intentionally ripping people off. Either way, there are plenty of other stores near by, I would avoid this place unless you know the price of the whiskey you buy. I go to Joe Canal's, uh, regularly. I'd probably list it as my favorite liquor store for day-to-day needs. There's always something good on sale, and they have a decent selection of whatever you are looking for: wine, beer, whiskey. So disappointed in my experience. Stopped while on a road trip so I can get 10% off a case plus reduced tax rate for shopping there. The discount was not given at check out so I had to somehow get a refund. Half an hour later the system had crashed and all customers were forced to cash only. And I had no refund! Only thing that good about this place is that I can get decent beer here. Really overpriced, not very safe looking place, and customer service could be a lot better. They have a vast selection of wines and the beer is fairly priced. Their workers sometimes help to carry large orders and load your car. Everyone is personable and the owner is there most of the time. They still do not beat Railroad Tavern's prices on Rt. 47 directly across from the old Kerr glass. read more

By far best liquor store in Cumberland county. Their wine and micro-brew selection is awesome as well as their spirits. I'm a big beer fan and they always keep up with different seasonal brews and have a huge selection of amazing micro brews many other liquor stores don't offer. Having just moved from a location very close to Total Wine in DE, I find the prices at Joe Canal's to be astronomical. That being said, this store seems to stock anything a gal could want in the way of libations! Always well stocked and clean. The employees are helpful. I used to go to this store once a month since I am a veteran and senior citizen until 3 days ago, I went and purchased my regular items swiped my debit card and was told to swipe again that it didn't go through, then was told that it didn't go through again, so I paid cash I asked the girl if I would be charged if there was a mistake since I had already put my card through 2 times and ended up paying cash, oh no problem it won't happen. When I got home I checked my online banking sure enough it wen through 2 times so I ended up paying 3 times, I called canals and they said no problem it will go back in the next day. Ok well it didn't, I live 20 miles away from the store so I went the next day to resolve this simple matter, well they didn't want to hear anything I asked for manager and explained to him and he said it's not our problem. I had all the documents with me to show I paid 3 times for the items. The manager would not here anything so I went to the police dept. In millville and they told me to take it to small claims court in bridgeton. I'm a 72 year old Viet name vet should I or anyone else have to go through this when they are clearly at fault? I am going to take it to small claims court and ask for aggravation charges on top of everything. They took advantage of a senior vet how many others do they get. read more

The manager is a total prick. I walked in and politely asked the guy if he could tell me where the red label would be and he just sat there texting on his phone, and then looked at me and said " its probably right over there where it says scotch, can you read scotch?" I was like wow. Then as i was walking out asked him if i could speak to his manager and he said "what do you need" and he said i am the manager and one of the owners. Super unprofessional... if im not mistaken I think his name is Tim or Ken. If he is one of the owners he has no respect or knowledge of how to greed paying customers. I like, and respect, the selection, especially the liquor. I don't usually take to Yelp but since I don't live in the area and can't deal with these guys directly this is my only option. I was visiting family and my wife made a run to Joe Canal's. I asked her to get me a 4-pack of Brotherton and Glasstown IPAs. To my delight, they had both in stock. I can only find these beers in South Jersey and love to grab them when I'm down from upstate NY. Well, I got back home and cracked open my Brotherton and it tasted bad - really bad. I looked at the "canned on" date and it was canned way back in January. This beer, and most craft brews, need to be consumed within a month or so. Then I tried the Glasstown and it too tasted bad. There was no "canned on" date but it tasted like it had turned a long, long, time ago. So I basically have to pour $30 worth of beer down the drain because Joe Canal puts out really old beer on their shelves. Just be very careful when buying here. Don't buy any craft beers without a canned on date and make sure it's fresh if it has it. read more

After 8yrs. of being a loyal customer. . I pick two different wine one which happens to be on sale. I go to the register to check out and the sales person calls for an override because the sales price in the register needs authorizing by a manager. The manager says they can not sell me the bottle of wine for the advertised sale price because they payed more for the bottle that what they have it advertised for. Good thing there are at least 8 more local liquor stores in the area. I have no problem paying full price for something I want. However the way I look at it, I feel if you are advertising an in store price. You should honor that price. All because management was to lazy to do there homework before advertising something they can not honor. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ITS BEST!!!!!!!!! P.S. Most of the staff at your store is really good. Today as every week I was standing in line with a bottle of rum in one hand and a case of beer in the other hand. I have handled this brand of beer bottles by one handle for ever and never had a problem. When up comes some jerk of a manager and YELLS at me like I am some low level stock boy "Hey sir hold that beer with both handles it will rip out of the box". Their prices aren't the best, and they are well stocked for a store in South Jersey (which isn't saying much), still the service here is below poor. For example, I had misplaced my licenses after work but had my passport on me. I have used it before to get alcohol several times so I saw no problem in this. The cashier ask me for my I.D. so to my surprise when I handed her my passport she told me that they would not except it, that I would need a drivers license. I explained to them that this was legal identification and that I did comply with her request by presenting photo I.D. At this point the other cashier decided to further humiliate me, and started arguing with me. I was told that the store only excepted drivers licenses, yet nowhere in the store was this posted. They pushed my items to the side and told me that I would not be making a purchase in the store until I found PROPER identification. I work in the service industry and from day one was taught never to argue with or belittle customers, backtalk and rudeness prohibited, as well as helping not hindering the customer. They failed at all three and therefore have failed to ever retain business from me again. I went to another store down the street and when asked for I.D. they were fine with a current U.S. passport. There deserve ZERO stars. They STEAL money from handicapped people. Won't honor their pricing when they misplace signs. Overcharged my credit card and REFUSED to refund the money they STOLE from me. Said it was my fault for being overcharged more than $30 for not reading the signs completely, not their fault for having the signs on the wrong item where there were boxes and boxes of the same item under the incorrect sign the store workers put there. The cashier knew the item rung up the incorrect price and called the manager to fix it when I was in line...I was under the impression they rectified their mistake when I paid my bill for Chistmas presents I was buying...they NEVER fixed the overpricing and REFUSE to give me my money back. They are thieves and schiesters. BEWARE of you shop at this store! Better yet, shop at a store who doesn't screw it's customers and make profits by stealing. I can honestly say that this store is horrible and I will never go there again. I have a brand new car and their speed bumps scraped the underside of my car.
