Lost my business because of my poor customer service I have been a customer of downtown Gallina's for five years, but they have just permanently lost my business because of very poor customer service. A month ago, I ordered a pizza which took two and a half hours to arrive. I was not called at any point with any updates about this delay. When I called two hours after this initial order to check on its status, I was told that the delay was caused because they had forgotten to put in my order, in the first place. I received no apologies about either this failure to put in my order, or about the extreme delay in my pizza arriving (which severely disrupted my evening and my schedule.) I asked to be refunded my money for my pizza, given the severity of this delay and the extreme inconvenience which it caused me. The owner refused to give me the refund I requested, but promised me a free pizza next time I called. When I called to redeem this offer of a free pizza, after putting me on hold for five minutes, I was offered a "half-off" deal on my pizza (rather than the free pizza which I had been explicitly promised, and which the owner assured me he had made a note of, under my name.) Once again, I was offered no apologies for either the two and a half hour delay on my first delivery order, or about the retraction of the promise to compensate me with a free pizza because of this initial delay. When my pizza was delivered, the deliveryperson was not friendly, giving me the impression that I, and my demand to be compensated for the poor customer service I had been received, was an unpleasant nuisance. After receiving this treatment, I will never be going back to downtown Gallina's. I am very disappointed that a business I have frequented so regularly, and which I have so enthusiastically supported for five years, would treat me as a (formerly) loyal customer, or treat any customer, so poorly. I will be finding a new pizzeria, which treats it customers with the respect and courtesy which I was unfortunately repeatedly denied at downtown Gallina's. read more

This is not a classy joint nor does it have the best food. However, the price is decent, service is fast and it works when you're looking for a casual Italian-american fare. I would certainly recommend the pizza. It's more New York style and they do the sausage better than most ( it's crumbly, not chunky). I think they make their own bread so the sandwiches (which are loaded to the brim) aren't a bad choice either read more

We are not from around here, so first impressions count. Did not start out well, guy seemed irritated that we were there. He sure didn't seem like he wanted to be working. Although he was really talkative and friendly to a pretty, young local that came in. We got the lunch special. Pizza was hot, but average. I've had better. Even sabarros at the mall has been better. Pizza crust is right up there with some of the worst I've ever had. Cardboard might be better. Service? If ordering at a counter when dining in is your thing and having to take a glass back to the counter for a refill is your thing, then I guess that passes for "service." Went to Springfield for the weekend from Chicago. If I was able to try the pizza, I could have commented on that but since we waited 1.5 hours, yes you read that correctly an hour and a half and nothing! The guy behind the counter should have set some sort of expectation. There were about 4 tables with people sitting so I'm not sure what the problem was but this was pretty bad. All of these bad reviews are shocking to me. This has been a family favorite for years. They know my husband by name when he goes in to pick up, and we get pizza from there maybe once every few months as we do not eat out much. Pizza and pasta is the most authentic in town. We completely overwhelmed this place yesterday when the Girl Scouts of Illinois visited Springfield. We were waiting outside when the restaurant opened and I was the first customer in the door. It took 45 minutes for me to receive my order of a medium pepperoni pizza and an order of spaghetti. Anytime I asked when my order would be ready, I was ignored until finally someone flippantly replied "it's going to be a while". I already waited 30 minutes at that point! Pizzas we're flying out of the oven and the entire dining room was eating except for 3 people in my group who were the first people in the door. I could hear delivery orders being taken with a promised delivery time of 30 minutes. That didn't seem right. Why couldn't anybody tell me how long it would be for my order? Since we had such a long wait, I had time to look around and find the dining room and bathrooms were filthy. The artificial plants hanging from the ceiling above our tables were dripping with dust. I never saw the kitchen staff wash their hands one time. I even saw one of them pick something up off the floor, touch the floor, and go right back to preparing food. I did my best to ignore it. I just wanted to feed my kids and get the heck out of there. When our food was ready, it actually was pretty good! It was fresh, hot, and tasty. I give this establishment 2 stars. I'm from New Jersey/ New York area. Having left my childhood home, and now occasionally residing in Springfield, Gallina's brings a tear to my eye. It's the closest thing to going home again. They make New York style pizza and they do it right. They have anchovies. The people in the kitchen are actually Italian. Thank god for this place. read more

Plan on being here a while if you want pizza. It wasn't busy, just a few tables filled. But it took longer than most pizza places. I guess they can only make one at a time. There were three of us and they only brought two plates. The waiter said he'd get another plate but never did. I had to go back to the counter, cut in front of a line of people (it got busy after our order), and ask for a plate. I never got an apology. The pizza was ok (better than pizza at home, but that's it). The service was slow and lacking. There are plenty of better places in town. read more

I have been to this place a number of times before I have finally decided not to go again. The service is horrible(every time I have gone!) The pizza is overrated and definitely overpriced. The iced tea is even gross. If you want it by the slice, go to Luca's or for a whole pie, go to Bernie & Bettie's or Gabatoni's. read more

I order from here quite often, and I usually have a great meal. I felt the need to write this review because last nights order was disappointing. We got a chef salad, fried ravioli and tortellini. Sauce that came with the ravioli was COLD. Not too much of an inconvenience and we enjoyed the food but a couple hours after eating my boyfriend and I both got VERY sick. VERY sick. This place is as authentic as italian food in america can get. This is not the place tony soprano would go to eat for fancy dinner but i'm sure he and paulie would pick up a slice here once in a while. We both had pasta, i had the spaghetti and meatballs which was okay and my wife had the chicken parmesan which was really really good! This place is not a sit down restaurant, but that's not why I gave it 1 star (although I expected it to be a sit-down). There's a bad smell once you walk in, and the place looks bland, dirty, outdated. The sign on the outside promises an authentic Italian restaurant, but falls completely short the moment you walk in. This place is what it is. Not pretentious but, gritty and to the point. It is simple food made to order. Sometimes the pizza can be overcooked, they don't use timers. Did not care for the sauce with the rigatoni. I would not order it again. The fresh bread was great. I've had a lot of cannoli and this one was awesome. Beware the "extra" filling on the plate probably means that the inside didn't get filled. Break it open before eating to see. read more

Oh sweet baby Jesus, there's nothing better than a slice or two of Gallinas pizza - except maybe getting one of their calzones. It's greasy, it's delicious, the crust isn't too thick or thin... The only thing that would make it better would be if they were open all night so you could go after hitting the bars, but really you can't blame them for that.
