This place looked like a total dump from outside, but that must just be to scare away the dumb tourists. Fortunately I am adventurous, because this place is a hidden gem! When you get inside, it feels like an American Legion or VFW hall with a bar up front and older locals scattered at tables with red plastic table cloths. The young man who served us was exceedingly polite and attentive. The menu was much broader and more refined than I ever expected, with interesting choices at a reasonable price. And the specials on the board were quite a bargain. When my chicken sandwich came, it looked like a frozen chicken breast, but then I bit into it, and it was fresh and juicy. Definitely not frozen. This is good eats in a simple little dive run by a family that obviously takes pride in what they do. This is what America is built on. Support places like this. This sit offers delicious food delivered with safety practices in mind. Really appreciated the "no masks, no service" posted on the door and watching the staff politely and calmly enforce the policy, offering to supply masks if necessary. It is a little intimidating to have everyone stare at you when you walk in. I just busted for the bar. I was worried food would be bland based on the crowd. It was not. I had the Chisholm Steak- the house specialty. It was well seasoned. The place got busy and busy as the dinner hour proceeded. The phone ran constantly for to-go orders. The food was atypical...nothing special. The staff was very friendly, though we did happen to see one waiter pick his nose then proceed to roll silverware. That was pretty much our only complaint (which we did point out to the staff). Other than that, typical small town eatery. read more

First, if you are a tourist.. Go south of I-70 on Buckeye (exit 275) past the railroad tracks and turn right on first. If you get lost, just ask a local where Miller's Tavern used to be. Now for the food. Maybe some won't call it a five but in Abilene this place is a ten. My wife and I had the Philly Cheesesteak sandwich and it was one of the best we've ever had. The onion rings are made from real onions instead of the frozen stuff you find in most places. The baked beans are marvelous but the coleslaw had a bit too much vinegar for me. The next day my wife had Fried Chicken and I had a Hammer Burger. I won't bore you with how good it was but I can tell you they actually cook food here. You won't get the frozen mocrowaved barely edible stuff found in the north end of town. It's less than 2 miles south of I-70 and well worth the extra time. Enjoy. I sure did. read more

I used my YELP app to find this cafe. Service was very nice and attentive. I wanted to order the chicken friend steak but it is not hand battered and as a Texan I won't take a chance on that. Waitress said it really was good and many people order it. I ordered a burger instead. It was large and had a good flavor with a ton of tots. She recommended the peanut butter pie. It had a good flavor but they topped it with peanut butter reese pieces and the color seemed to melt off the candy. It had an ok flavor but visually was unappetizing. We stopped for an early dinner. Dining room was clean. No signs to indicate if we should seat ourselves, and the man behind the counter didn't acknowledge us....so that was awkward. Our server, Kimber, was fast, friendly, efficient and kept our drinks filled. Our table had: crispy chicken salad, bacon cheeseburger, patty melt and Wiener schnitzel dinner. All the food looked good and the portions were big. Sadly, the burger and Wiener schnitzel were dry. The salad was typical iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, bacon and cheese. No one at our table ate their fries. They weren't hot and crispy. They seem to have a steady business with a lot of to go orders. The menu has a big variety. I am very impressed with the service here! We informed the waitress our child has extreme allergies and they took all measures to protect her while still providing her a hearty meal. They willingly brought packages to our table so we could double check ingredients. They do not claim to be an allergy free restaurant but they do a wonderful job at trying to accommodate. They even asked for a list of her allergies so the cook could double check for cross contamination. I'm very impressed. read more

The building is unassuming from the outside, but once you walk in, it looks just like grandmas cafe used to. Like the cafes of old, we were able to seat ourselves, a small thing that I really enjoyed. The staff, all of them, were very prompt, friendly and courteous. Our salads came out quick, were nice and fresh, and nothing was wilty! Dinner came out just as the salads were finished, and was hot and fresh. Between two of us, we had the fish filets and the chicken fried steak. I had mashed potatoes as a side, and was surprised to find they were real potatoes. Some fancier establishments tend to use instant spuds instead of real potatoes, so this was very refreshing. The chicken fried steak was very tasty and fork tender. The fish had an overly fishy taste. I know it was fish, but this was a bit like it just came out of a muddy river. A great local restaurant in Abilene Kansas. The fried chicken was perfect. The rest of my group had a wide range of meals; hamburger, breakfast, and chicken fried steak. They all enjoyed the meal and then had to have the pie. They had peanut butter, chocolate, and coconut pies. I'm surprised they could walk after all that food, but they were all happy. Still, we seated ourselves at a back table and had fun reading the menu of good home cooked meal selections. The chili burger was great. I had it sans bun because oh what a mess that would have been. Both the chili (beanless) and the burger (fresh, not frozen, meat hand patted) were great. I had a side of mashed potatoes and gravy. Again, very down home as these were really mashed, not whipped, spuds. My husband said the coleslaw was excellent. Abilene is a cute town and this small "old fashion grill" as its sign reads is part of the charm. Don't miss it.
