I came here on an open chair basis so I could get a haircut last minute. First off I walked in and it was like walking into a time warp from the 50's and 60's which I extremely loved. I'm all about a no frills barbershop and Joe's is where it's at in Chicago. This place has it all from the record and cassette players, the 40" tube TV with built in VCR, relics all over the wall, and a plethora of waiting chairs that are from a multitude of centuries. Few important things to know about this place, no reservations, cash only, and you get cut by the next barber that's available. When you walk in you need to figure out the guy that was last to sit down to wait so you know when your up. I've been about 5 times and only had the same guy cut my hair twice but I think all the guys do a really great consistent job. Some people freak out about the price but I would rather pay $30 at a no frills joint then $40 at a men's salon where the girls are hot but suck at cutting hair, in reality i find girls are too soft and should stick to cutting women's hair. Joe who's owned the place from the beginning still cuts hair there and makes this wine that with one sip will fuck you up! Take a glass of wine or a beer while you wait, and if it's busy be ready to wait about an hour... but that's ok because the guys take their time and cut your hair right! read more

Took my 2 year old son to get his haircut by Papa Joe Sr and it was the best haircut he's ever gotten! He talked to him the whole time and even put a Christmas movie on for him. My son was super comfortable and so happy to get to pick a sucker afterwards for sitting still. Typical haircut described accurately by Andy G. below as " conservative white man's haircut from about 1950-1964" took about 20 minutes or less, after a 20+ minute wait, and cost $30 on top of which of course I had to tip. Could have easily gotten the same cut for 1/2 that amount from one of the big box places just a few minutes walk further away. The "$" in the description of this place is inaccurate & misleading. I would not expect to find a cut for 50% less than the place with a single "$" dollar sign. Yelp or Joe's Barbershop please correct to at least two $$, would be disappointed & annoyed to find the real cost if the "$" had drawn me to this location for the first time. I've been going to Joe's for a long time. However, for the second time now I got my hair jacked up by Joe Jr. I just had to pay someone else to fix it. Every other experience I've had there is great. I would usually recommend this place to anyone - but it can be like playing Russian roulette seeing if you will get a good barber. There are so many barbers around town and most of them require appointments, I was glad that Joe's Barber Shop has none of those requirements. Just come in and wait your turn, plenty of space and vintage items to look at or you just want to sit down and watch movies, just ask Joe and he will pop in any movies you like. Joe Jr did a really good job on my haircut, I think I counted 5 different scissors he used on my hair. Updating my previous 5-star review from a couple years ago... So, I'd been going to Joe's exclusively for about 7 years when this past fall I grew my hair out for a change. Going without a haircut for several months, I decided to go to Twisted Scissors salon, where I assumed they typically do longer hairstyles than would a traditional barber shop. The first time, it was okay, but on my second appointment with a different stylist they completely disregarded (or simply ignored) my request and I walked away disappointed, actually astonished at how bad they were able to mess up the simple hairstyle I was going for. Not trying to trash the place as a whole, but I need better than a 50% success rate to encourage me to come back. The lesson? If it aint broke, don't fix it. Joe's is consistently good. It's well-established that they're first come-first served, but it really doesn't matter which barber you get. Other hip, chain barbershops try to emulate the experience you get at Joe's too, but there's no replicating their authenticity. Bonus points for having local, craft beer ready in the fridge while you wait. Extra bonus points for continuing to staff classically-trained barbers ready to do right by their customers. read more

This is a true American barbershop for guys only. Not a salon in any way but very professional skilled barbers. Haircut is perfect with no stragglers left behind. Clean, close and most importantly, comfortable face shave leaving me feeling smooth. I was a little hesitant about the prices but totally worth it. Highly recommended and will be going back once I relocate to Chicago. If you're looking for a real barbershop with real barbers (not cosmetologists trying to fake it), go here. Found myself in desperate need of a haircut, and this place was recommended by my fellow Yelpers, and boy did it deliver! Very relaxed atmosphere full of happy gents cutting hair and chatting about everything under the son. They've got an old jukebox playing some of the classics. After waiting a bit, I was directed to sit at the end chair where I noticed my barber had a small collection of wrestling action figures and a luchador's mask. Extremely promising. They also have a fridge full of beer made available to customers free of charge, as they're sponsored by the local Pipeworks Brewery and get a monthly pallet of tallboys of craft beer. The one I enjoyed was the Lizard King Mozaic Hopped Pale Ale. I can see why they're known for their can art. My haircut was high in quality, and only $25 dollars, plus tip. They only accept cash, which is fine by me. I highly recommend visiting this establishment, as I intend to continue doing so for the foreseeable future. Not a huge fan myself. Firstly, the arrangement of who gets cut when is confusing. You walk in, sit down, and are apparently supposed to remember who came in before you and who comes in after so you can recall your place in the queue. Maybe useful as a memory refining test, but not what I went to Joe's for unfortunately. Also, there's beer...but I don't know who you pay, if you pay, or how much you'd pay, so I didn't take any. Joe's overall was just a confusing place to me. The cut was good, but I wasn't wowed. I thought the price was fair but non especially cheap. This place certainly has a loyal following which is understandable. Awesome barbershop services at a decent price. My lone visit to the shop was this morning and Tyler did a great job attending to my weird request of a full service cut and shave - shaping my stache into a pencil to fulfill a gentlemen's bet. I got there exactly at 9AM which is when they open, and had no wait on a Friday. Yet within 15 mins the placed was packed! I recommend getting there that early as well if you want to be looking good all in good time. The only negative for the individual experience is that loyal following that makes the wait so long. On their website they claim that the best time to come is when you have the time to wait. During my winter break I had the time and luckily I didn't have to use much of it. If you have the time, I would recommend tying out a true barbershop experience for yourself. They know how to make a man look good. read more

On my first (and only) visit here the elder joe engaged me in great conversation topics such as how he killed so many people in 'nam, including kids, and how he has a gun in the shop and is not afraid to use it and if he does it will be one shot only to kill the person. I understand the realities of war and dont judge him for what he did. But the subject matter is just totally inappropriate for a first time visit. Edit: Ok, so the owner emailed me asking to re-consider my 1 star. I had been debating whether or not 1 star is too harsh. I settled on keeping it at 1 star, leaving my original content and then adding this. Our conversation topic would have been perfectly acceptable had I been a regular client and had some sort of relationship but I wasn't. Over the line for first time. As far as cut goes, you WILL get a good haircut here as the barbers know what they are doing. They finish with the straight blade razor on back of neck which I love.
