Noni plant on the road outside of Joes Nuts
    Amberlee B.

PASS on Joes Nuts! Horrible woman/owner. We parked in one of the only two spots available. One car pulled in with us and immediately pulled back out, we should've taken their lead and left with them. The tour, is a walking tour- where you walk about 100 feet into to the edge of the orchard, where you bend down and pick up a few macadamia nuts in various states, and the tour guide described to you what each state the nuts are in. Tour guide was lovely, no complaints there. She then leads you back 50 feet to the small, rundown shed where they sell their macadamia nuts. She let us try a few of them, each are in a small 8 ounce bag, and none nearly as flavorful as other macadamia nuts we have had. We did get to watch the tour guide crack one raw, macadamia nut and let us try that one- those were absolutely delicious! However, they weren't selling those, and we were bummed, because we would've probably bought them. We thanked her for the tour, and walked just beyond our car to the road, where we found some native plants that we were taking pictures of, and just enjoying the afternoon. Mind you, we were not allowed to see the dogs that were being fostered, or any of the animals their site says you can pet. We were plant gazing for maybe 10 minutes when the owner (not the tour guide) came rushing out demanding that we leave immediately. (We said ok, apologized and started walking back) She stated that since we didn't buy anything we cannot stay on her property. She continued to berate us by telling us she has a business to run and asking us to leave immediately once again. Again, after the first time, she asked us to leave, we understood and were already walking back. Yet again, she continued berating us stating that since we didn't buy anything, we can't stick around. What started out as a seemly OK experience went very sour with all of the negativity coming from the owner. She also stated that we were taking out parking spots of customers, not a single car pulled pulled in while we were there. And for good reason! There are so many other macadamia nut farms and tour on the island, especially in the Kona area, spend your time and money there. Pass on Joe's nuts. Pictures are of the Noni and Bread fruit across the street from Joe's Nuts- but don't park at JNs unless you're going to buy their nuts.

    THE BEST FLAVORED MAC NUTS

We booked a camp site on this farm through HipCamp - everything was great! They provided a level grounded camping spot for our tent, porta potty and hot showers. There's lots of friendly, adorable animals that roam this property including chickens, goats, dogs, cats, a cow named Barbie and a white duck named Nelly. The owner also has a dog rehoming/rescue situation going on, which I thought was particularly admirable! If you plan on camping here, be aware that because of the animals - there will be lots of noise, but the experience is honestly completely worth it. All of the Mac nut flavors are addicting! I highly recommend coming prepared to buy multiple bags as it'll be almost impossible to choose just one flavor after you've tasted all of their samples! We went with Sweet Thai Chili, Coconut Curry, and F'n Hot. Just down the street is the painted church in one direction and the GORGEOUS Paleaku Botanical Peace Sanctuary in the other. This whole area is just magical in my opinion!!

    Yum!!!

Really rude people. No aloha. Definitely avoid this place. If you need a snack, hit up Keoki's Fish and Chips instead.

You will see Daisy the dog running through the grass following her trusty master Todd. This is a working farm people, so there is work for the family to do. Sitting on the lanai having fresh coffee in the mornings and then having a beer in the afternoon is all great. Two step is a close drive, Captain Cook and Kealakakua Bay are a nice drive and a town where you can, if you want, get foofy things. Volcanoes NP is 1.5 hours away. Note: be patient driving down the driveway!! GO 5MPH or you can do some damage to your rental car. You will bounce around if you go any faster than 5mph. Todd was a great host and was easily accessible by text. He will take you on a tour of the farm (which I highly recommend) and make sure you are comfortable and set in your rental. A pleasant and comfortable camping experience on the Big Island…read more As a solo woman, I spent 9 nights in the Jungle Canopy at Gingerhill Farm Retreat in April 2026. I had an excellent stay, although I am used to camping, and feel that having a camping mindset is required for staying here. Yes, the chorus of frogs are very loud as soon as it's dark, and you can hear roosters in the distance in the morning along with bird songs. However, I enjoyed the noises and am an early riser. The Jungle Canopy is located close to the private residence, and I experienced little human noise. There was one nighttime rain and no leaks. The screened-in bedroom is functional, and the bed has a good (firm) mattress. The sink and toilet, screened off and behind the bed, are nice to have in this enlarged tent. The shower is a few feet outside the tented bedroom/kitchen, and is open to the sky (cool to look up at the tree canopy). The shower is very nice, and the water gets hot. There is no door, but the only way you can be seen is from the Jungle Canopy tent itself (you can hang a sarong if you needed more privacy). They provide face clothes and towels, two worn beach towels, as well as family-size liquid hand soap, shampoo and conditioner (decent quality). The kitchen, in front of the screened bedroom, also under a canopy, has everything you need: pots and pans (including a few that are stainless steel), a good size fridge with a small enclosed freezer (with 2 freezer packs), a sink with dish soap, etc. They provide a Berkey-like water filter carboy, a stainless-steel kettle to boil water, as well as coffee beans, a grinder, and French-press. There is a small table with two chairs where you can look at beautiful tropical plants. The only bummer is that the hot plate to cook food and boil the kettle can be slow to heat, especially if there is a slight breeze. Once the propane tank emptied while I was cooking breakfast and I had to text to ask for a replacement, however, someone came over right away and I was able to resume cooking. Like camping, you are responsible for taking out your own trash to communal cans located a fairly short distance away. You can't put any toilet paper down the toilet, so all paper used for #1 and #2 needs to go into a plastic-bag-lined trash can and you remove and dump. They removed the compost. Recommendations to Gingerhill: provide more plastic bags for trash, more toilet paper (I had to ask), and offer a larger compost bucket as it filled too quickly. Also, one day I came back in the afternoon and found the gate code didn't work. I texted and called and fairly soon someone told me that they changed the code, but didn't notify me. Next time they change the code they should text all visitors staying at the farm the new code. So, in all, I would give a 9/10 ranking, especially given the cost compared to other accommodations, and the tropical farm experience. FYI, there is snorkeling gear that you can use that is located next to the Sunset Cottage.

I understand mistakes can happen, but the way this property handled my situation was unacceptable…read more I reserved the Kukui Cabin, which was listed with two twin beds, an indoor flushing restroom, and an indoor shower. I provided documentation showing that I booked the Kukui Cabin. However, I was placed in a different accommodation with an outdoor composting toilet and an exposed outdoor shower. The property claimed I requested the Bamboo Cabin, but when I asked for documentation, they failed to provide any. They later denied my refund/dispute by calling the substituted room an "upgrade," even though I never requested or agreed to the change. I was also concerned about the lack of standard room security. Their website did not clearly disclose this, and their response was simply that it had been that way for over 30 years with no issues and that I should have read their reviews. I have filed a complaint with the Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection and am prepared to pursue appropriate legal remedies. I would not book here again unless you are comfortable paying premium lodging prices for what felt more like camping in the wilderness.

The road was narrow with many turns, but it worth the drive. Received warm welcome from Tara after parking on the ground floor. While talking about their move from New York and their works in Hawaii, we were joined by Ed on the upper level. He talked about his visions to keep and operate this coffee farm in all-nature ways to keep certified as organic. Even with some diseases on the tree roots, they used the nature and sustainable methods to control possible spreading and to treat the bacteria. The tasting was then hosted by Jessada. He explained from the volcano's contributions, tree growing, coffee cherries, hand picking, washing, fermenting, drying, grading, roasting, and more. They even separated those fancy peaberries! We were able to enjoy both freshly milled and brewed medium and dark roasted coffees. Those were our youngest family member's first ever coffee! He also talked about growing and caring turmeric. We bought multiple packs of their coffee beans and one pound of turmeric to go. We then walked about their farms and also saw papayas, bananas, avocados, and other tropical fruits. The entire visit was highly professional, knowledgable and educational! We received warmest welcome from Tara, Ed and Jessada.

Don't let the slick website fool you. This is a mom and pop, 2 people with an idea/dream who made it a reality. If mass market produced, easy parking and quick stop with bathroom is your vibe, this ain't it. I made my reservation on the website, we received a confirmation, and a text with directions, my maps app did just fine. We had a late start and since it was a Sunday and not overbooked Ed way kind enough to say still come we will see you when you get here. The turn off was easy to miss, and the road up the hill is not for the timid driver- we did fine in our rental sedan going slow, but an suv, our something with higher clearance would be more forgiving. The roads are local and small, be polite and use pull outs for letting other cars by. The pay off is views of the coast, the mountain, coffee - blossoms, berries and picked trees. It is other worldly in an agricultural Willy wonky way. Then you arrive... Ed met us on the road and directed us to park in his carport. It is a home, with an in basement tasting room where you discover the magic Ed and Tara have been brewing. Ahem. We sampled a medium and dark roast. I will state for the record I am no coffee snob. I don't know enough about coffee to have opinions. But the coffee we had today was other worldly good. I think it was pour over style in this cool contraption that reminded me of an ice cream cone holder with sample cups collecting the coffee below. Ed heated the water to 174 precisely. He amiably chatted about his family's story and what a designation of Kona Coffee means. Small batch hand processed coffee is special and comes with an expensive price. As I stood in the farm basement, which is a cluttered mash up of tools, farm equipment, packaging materials and bags of beans- this is a labour of love and inspiration. The coffee was hands down the best I have ever had - European, African, Costa Rican- nothing tastes like Rooster Farms Kona. It is like tasting the island aloha in a cup. We bought 3 bags for $100. We will make that last long time, and fun fact, they offer mail order so replenishing is possible. The tasting is free. Walking the grounds allowed, but no formal tour. Bottom line: Authentic, sincere, and an amazing cup of true Kona coffee. Off the beaten tourist path and a real experience. 10/10 no notes.
