Once upon a time, five years ago, this was the coolest place on the island. The owner was an absolute riot! Merch was to be had for days and the every single sentence the employees uttered had some sort of dirty ball joke attached at the end. Reminded me of the Uranus fudge factory out in Springfield Missouri. Now there was only one employee working, who seemed irritated to be there. The merch was more limited than I remember and they were out of iced coffee at two in the afternoon. Not sure what happened to this place but it was like trying to go back to your old hangouts from when you went to college. What used to be fun now seemed less so and you've got this kind of been there done that feeling. read more

Stopped by on a Saturday and they were closed? Not sure why but being it was a Saturday the next opening day is Thursday and well that's too late for me since I'm leaving on Sunday. I would suggest that you call ahead of time to make sure that they are open. FYI, You might find their a limited number of their products at the Kona airport but prepare to pay a higher price. And if you're thinking of ordering online check first because most of the year they wouldn't ship out orders for fear of the hot weather. read more

The store shows hours of operation and they showed that they were opened. So I drove 2 hours to find out that they are closed. I asked around and the people told me that they are having a hard time locating staff members so the hours are all over the place. If you can't open, modify the hours because you are wasting peoples time and money. The schedule showed that they are open on Sunday and it was not the case. read more

We have tasted and tried others, this place is not that special. Don't get me wrong--they do taste pretty good but it's almost $1 each for the green colored chocolate ball. This is a hip spot with a unique sense of humor. The products are high quality and taste good, but things have changed through the years- which may be a good thing. There is no more "castration room," and several products have been discontinued since new ownership. My friend who has been a regular there for many years was disappointed but still managed to spend a lot of money. She enjoyed connecting with the friendly staff member who had been there since before the changes. Since the global pandemic, they no longer offer samples, but there are plenty of products to choose from. There is a working factory that was closed when we visited due to the holiday. The products are pricey but very good. Those who visited in the past may be a little disappointed with the changes, but the sense of humor is still there with all the balls (macadamia nuts) you could possibly want. read more

This place is rad. I love sweets and did a search on Yelp for local places. This store was about 10 mins away from our resort and it was our first day on the island so we decided to explore. When I mentioned Donkey Balls to my husband he said "Lets go!". The store is small with to areas. One area sells all the Donkey chocolates and the other side is a cafe where you can order drinks. We walked in and decided to check out the goods before grabbing some coffee to go. The store also has a factory where you can see where the chocolates are made. No one was in there but it was fun to look inside. There are various types of Donkey Balls! The names are hilarious. We ended up buying milk chocolate mint donkey balls and peanut butter balls. Yes they are expensive, but a great souvenir! Great little gifts although again quantity is small and pricey. We ordered a coffee to go and there were some samples of donkey balls at the counter. Donkey Balls Factory and Store is a small storefront that sells balls! All types of balls...donkey balls, chicken balls, monkey balls. Delicious chocolate covered balls! The different balls vary in size and flavors. They have items such as chocolate covered strawberries, bananas, toffee, peanuts, and even chocolate! They really have anything for just about anyone. Their names are really fun as well! They are very funny and catchy, especially for dudes. There's blue balls, salty balls, toasted balls, and oops my nuts are showing. I thought that this place was going to be a large factory where you could see the chocolate being made, but instead it was just a couple windows into a small kitchen area. Nothing spectacular and no one was making any chocolate! The parking can be a little tight because it is only street parking. If you are coming in from Kona the store will be on the left side, so it would be safer to turn around and park on that side. There's a lot of traffic. Pricing is high and the contents are small. I wanted to purchase a whole bunch, but it was expensive. I wish that they had mini sizes so that you could buy for individual people. I just got a few to share with friends. read more

I won't spoil the legend of the term "donkey ball" to leave some mystery and also respect the experience of going to the store. They have every variety of chocolate covered macadamias and then variations that are chocolate, caramel, and flavor filled all with appropriate names e.g. chicken balls, goat balls, boar balls etc. We got a variety of all the different types of balls some were sweet, some were salty but they were all delicious. We loved them so much that we are going to order some (I live in OK, so yes they do ship) for our family as Christmas gifts! So even if you can't get to Hawaii hit their website and order some to sample you won't be disappointed. read more

Out of curiosity we stopped at the Original Donkey Ball factory store as we drove through Kealakekua on the way back from Volcanoes National Park. Store was clean, neatly put together and products displayed nicely. I had some questions and talked with a very nice young woman named Sarah. Since it wasn't crowded I felt it was ok to ask all my historical Donkey Ball questions. Sarah was patient and very informative. I learned a lot about history and the differences between the Original Donkey Balls and the "other" brand. We talked for a bit and we left without purchasing anything but felt fulfilled in the information we learned and having met a very nice person. Well, for further understanding we went into Kona to the "other" store. They couldn't be the least I interested in giving any information, just what did I want to buy (we didn't). Left that store thinking wow, what a difference. 2 days later we drove back down to Kealakekua to the Original Donkey Ball store, again Sarah was there. She remembered us, same pleasant person, talked some more donkey ball history. Made our purchases of some different balls. Sarah made all the difference. Loved stopping in these shops while we were in Kona. Not only are the labels entertaining but the chocolate is really really good. One of our favorites were the Salty Balls and we also found some spicy Hawaiian salt seasoning that is AMAZING here. If you're lucky you'll get to see them actually making some of their products while you shop. We were lucky enough to see Blue balls from start to finish and they even let us sample them fresh from the tumbler. We had an awesome time! read more

Oh the myriad of ball jokes that you hear and the staff go to town with. The balls are good and they'll let you sample them if you ask for a particular type. I'm not sure how the price varies compared to the more commercially covered covered nuts but you can see them being made right on the spot. read more

Super fun to stop in here and grab a few balls. The chocolate is very tasty! I also purchased a memento tiki coffee cup to remember how nice the people were in the store. When the cashier (Sarah?? = ugh - vacation brain!) found out we were just poking around the area, she sent us to the Painted Church a few miles down the road. I would never have known about this spot had we not had such a nice conversation! She also recommend a poke place for lunch and it was a hit! Driving along the road, we see "Donkey Balls" and had to stop. My curiosity always gets me. The only parking available is street parking but this is a very small town and finding parking is not an issue. This is a candy and factory store, which sells all sorts of chocolate covered malt balls and macadamia nuts along with kona coffees. It was amusing looking at the varying items. If you go up to the counter where the register is at, you can taste test a few of their goodies. We ended up purchasing some Mango Malted Monkey Balls, pineapple malted monkey balls, dark chocolate crusty boar balls with toffee, and dark n white chocolate covered 100% kona Peaberry coffee beans aka Gourmet Kona Gogo Beans. I love anything that has to do with sweets and what's a better place to go than Donkey Balls?! The three different types are donkey balls, chicken balls and monkey balls. STOP - closed on Mondays! We love this store and come every year when we're on the Big Island. This year, however, we were so disappointed when, after having driven all the way down to this location, we discovered it's closed on Mondays. Despite the hours in Yelp saying it's open daily. Yes I know, its a tourist trap but I had to see what and where and how these Donkey Balls are made and because I bought these balls at the airport a few times. I had to wait for parking on the roadside when we got here while everyone went in to check out the balls. I finally got a space to park a few minutes later. Fyi- its roadside parking. When I walked in, yes it was all tourist and lo and behold, I saw my wife standing in line already waiting for the cashier to bag those donkey balls. I never saw her with so much balls in her hands o_O. Donkey balls, chickin balls and goat balls. All kine balls. The coffee balls were ono. These were my favorite. They also have a coffee shop inside with small kine knick nacks and some cool shot glasses that say "you gotta have balls". The walls are lined with different kinds of balls. Big balls, small balls and teeny tiny balls. I didnt see any factory machines making balls or anything like that or a window to look into so you can see the balls being handled by the workers. If you like the taste of these donkey balls when you put them in your mouth then this is your bag. Reach out grab some bags and stand in line. I would say buy them at the airport but they dont carry that much variety like they do here. read more

As my husband and I were driving through Kealakekua I saw a giant sign that said Donkey Balls and just laughed at him and said do you want some Donkey Balls? What a clever name once you see what type of items they sell. Anyway, we did actually stop by after reading online that Donkey Balls was known for their chocolate in Kona. They sell a number of different Hawaiian specialities as well Kona coffee, chocolate covered macadamias and other nut free chocolates. You can watch them make the chocolate here through a window in the store. They are also very clever with the naming of their items so it'll sure keep you entertained reading blue balls, salty balls, flakey balls etc... It is a little pricey in my opinion but the packaging is really cute and they sell items here you don't normally find at the other gift shops down in Kailua unless you're going to the Donkey Ball location there. The employees are very friendly and they offer samples of their sweet treats at this location. They also make fresh brewed coffee beverages here as well. It's just a fun shop to drop by if you happen to be in the town. There are several restaurants and cute antique shops in the area too. Parking shouldn't be that much of a problem even though it's street parking, there were plenty of spaces there when we went. You are paying for the funny product names when you buy Donkey Balls. We spent almost 20 minutes laughing over the different types of balls they had(dirty, flaky, blue, creaming, etc), finally deciding on the Frosted Ass balls(dark chocolate rolled in powder sugar). We bought the small bag which was $6.99 and included 5 balls. Then when we got home, we were excited to try these, but they ended up being kind of let-down. Extremely thick thick layer of chocolate. The ball is maybe 1 3/4" in diameter, but the macadamia nut inside is maybe 1/2" diameter(please see my pictures). You could tell it was good quality chocolate, but it was just TOO MUCH! Honestly, the "cheaper" Mauna Loa nuts at ABC stores, with a thinner layer of chocolate were easier to eat and what we preferred. It was funny, glad we bought some, but we would not do it again. read more

When I mentioned we were popping over to the Big Island for a few days, a friend begged me to bring back Donkey Balls. I thought "Huh?? That better not be code for pakalolo!" hahaha Located south of Kona you may stop by en route to Kealakekua bay. Fantastic marketing for chocolate covered mac nuts. They use layers & layers of Guittard chocolate (dark or milk) which is my choice for baking. For example, there are blue balls (covered in semisweet chocolate and then a layer of white chocolate colored blue), salty balls (rolled in sea salt) & dirty balls (rolled in cocoa powder). If donkeys aren't your thing go for boar balls, monkey balls or dolphin balls. These are definitely a splurge or souvenir for your pals back home - 4oz (approx 5-6 balls) = $6.99 or 8oz = $12.99. But hey, what is life if you don't grab it by the balls??! read more

WHO'D TURN DOWN THE CHANCE TO ADD SOME BALLS?!? Whole macadamia nuts rolled over and over in layers of chocolate until they're the size of--well--donkey balls! This quirky little island favorite has been delighting crowds for some time, and I can see why: They're tasty. The donkey balls alone come in a bevy of innuendo-laden names like "flaky balls" (rolled in coconut), "salty balls" (rolled in sea salt), and "crusty balls" (with toffee), to name a few. But donkey balls aren't their only specialty. You can also get monkey balls, dingle berries (I'll leave those for you to figure out), and more! They ain't cheap, though, at $12 for an 8-oz bag (half that for a 4-oz bag). So although these can be a great souvenir to take back to your mainland peeps, be aware that it won't take long to rack up a sizable bill. That said, they are tasty. Had to stop for a place called Donkey Balls. It is just a little south of Kona heading south. They have a big selection of chocolates called Donkey Balls (Mac nuts covered on chocolate) and Monkey Balls (we tried mango flavored malted balls). Great candies but they really are large and a bit tough to bite into. So many great flavored so will probably order more. If you are in the area stop by. They also offer coffee. read more
