If you've followed my reviews over the last few months you know that every week my husband and I celebrate "Pizza Thursday" (a hold over from pre-covid times when my husband would grab a pizza on his way home from a night class he was taking). Every so often we mix it up by trying some place new in town, and last week it was Joe's Pizza. Confession--NY style pizza isn't my favorite but Joe's Pizza may make me a believer. First off, as far as I can tell there is only one size of pie here. And that size is "HUGE." It's so big that (as you can tell by my photo) that it didn't fit in the box. When I opened it and saw the bent crust I immediately began to curse our delivery person for messing it up. But then it became clear. The pizza was fine, it was just too damn big for its own good! More of it to love. The slices are massive but so so good. We got a pepperoni and mushroom and it was excellent. Super cheesy, good pep, fresh mushrooms. I was into it! You can upgrade your cheese and get fresh Zingerman's mozzarella but we stuck with the traditional stuff and it was delicious. It's baked in a wood fired oven so some of it gets a nice char as well. We also ordered the cheese garlic bread and OMG. So cheesy and good. Check the cheese pull in my photo if you don't believe me. Woodfired in the oven too. We did lose one of the sticks to a bit of char but it was worth it for the rest of them to have that delicious flavor. The only bummer is that this pie is not cheap (one size only so you can't scale down to save money) so it won't be in our regular rotation but I could see us doing carryout slices in the future to save $$. The counter guy was super nice when my kid dropped his amazingly large slice and was gracious enough to give him a new one. This pizza place is my favorite. It is on South U and opens late so worth getting anytime. I love thin crust and they have a nice burnt taste. This is connected with famous Joe's Pizza in NYC. I want to the backstory is the owner of NY place's nephew decide to go to UofM so pizza store moved here as well. It is under a high rise so they are really lucky. I have to do a little bit of walking but worth it! I would recommend getting a box and trying different slices. I really enjoy the og cheese, pep, or BASIL moz. Price is reasonable and once you get you will be hooked. I get cravings after eating at Joes. They portions are big but I can finish like 2 slices! I highly recommend :) read more

Best pizza we've had in Ann Arbor so far! To caveat, Mani is tasty but it's a pretty penny. So I wouldn't necessarily try to compare Joe's and Mani apples to apples. Our favorite pizza in Michigan is probably still Tivoli's Wood Brick-Oven Pizzeria in Utica, MI but in a pinch, Joe's Pizza is more than satisfactory. I didn't realize that whole pie = 18" when I called ahead to order it, but I'm not complaining! The students working there were really friendly & helpful. I asked if they liked the Sicilian & one of the workers said it's thick but still really light. Once I tried it, I totally got what he meant. A whole pie with two toppings, 1 Sicilian slice & 1 white slice ran me $35. The pizza itself was just perfect. Not too much sauce. Not too much cheese. Not too greasy. Goldilocks me is very pleased. If I had to nitpick, I'd love more pizza bubbles. Otherwise, we'll definitely be back for whole pie to-go orders! read more

I really like Joes pizza, can be a quick fix for lunch. Very quick to grab, and nice to sit and eat.

I came to campus because students were away on winter break. I can with my nephew and we ordered one of each pies (not the square) with bottled drinks. Since it was dead, service was quick. Our slices were quickly reheated and served. We cut the slices in half so we could try each of them. Our favorite was the "white"! The best flavor of all the slices we tried. Love the thin crust, but I think supreme is too much for the thin crust! Our next favorite was fresh mozzarella, I would stick to these two and honestly skip the other slices! read more

A NYC slice shop in Ann Arbor? The timing is perfect. Well, for me, at least. I gave up hope of finding a NY-style slice almost immediately upon deciding to make the move from New York. For the record, good NY-style pizza can be hard to find even in the city these days. So much of the product is made for tourists who are just excited to be there in the first place. But I have deep love for the form, and have spent far too much time thinking about what makes a great slice of pizza. Joe's just opened, and when I went on a Sunday evening, there was a line out the door. Given what I've seen from the pizza places in the immediate vicinity, the arrival this legendary New York establishment is going to be an infinite improvement over what's currently passing for pizza. What can you tell from one cheese slice? Just about everything. First, let me say this was a delicious slice. The flavors of New York were well represented. That includes a crust that has a bit of char on it, to boost the flavor of an already tasty dough; a tomato sauce that's fresh and bright; and cheese that's been burnished in the oven, containing enough fat and salt to make it a treat. My suspicion will be as the crew at Joe's continues to master the oven and the flow of their production, the pizza--and experience of eating it--will only get better. Areas for improvement: - The dough feels a little overworked. There was an unpleasant toughness to the end crust, and there was no sign of those beloved bubbles on the pies I saw behind the glass. - The sauce was just a bit more heavily applied than the style demands. As a result, you get the dreaded slippage of the cheese from the bottom crust. This style is all about nailing the ratios, and I felt this could be dialed in a little tighter. - Reheats. This is a critical part of the process for NY-style slices. Throwing the slice back in the oven crisps up the bottom crust. The poor soul in front of me received his two slices of cheese direct from the pie. I insisted on a reheat. Even still, my slice could have used more time in the oven. I pity the poor soul ahead of me, whose slices were limp and less than hot. Yes, there was a big line. Yes, the crew was under time pressure. But it's important to not let the quality slip. Without a doubt, I will be going to Joe's a lot. It's really the only slice shop in town, and it's just a stone's throw from Pinball Pete's. Pizza is the spiritual partner to pinball. One of these days I'll try some of the slices with toppings and other variants. The spinach slice looked glorious. There is one with fresh mozzarella from Zingerman's. Judge me all you like, but I have a soft spot for white pizza, and Joe's has one of those available for slices as well. More than anything, I'm looking forward to elevating Joe's to the 5* I know in my heart of hearts it deserves. Joe's Pizza was the hype for several months pre-COVID. They always had deals with Snackpass so you'd see hundreds of hungry college students waiting in line to get their one free slice of cheese pizza. It's worth it if you have friends to wait with! Their pizzas by the slice ($3-5 per slice) were always good options for a quick bite/snack if you're on the go. I've definitely gotten a slice in between classes if I was hungry and didn't have time to stop for a full meal. However, I felt like during the pandemic, the quality went down significantly. The pizza was still tasty, but the cheese wasn't very stringy. When you bite down on it, there's none of the satisfying cheese pull. Not sure what happened, to be honest. My favorites are the "Fresh Mozarella", "Pepperoni", and "White". Still, this is the best option for pizza in Downtown Ann Arbor. I also love NY style pizza! It's opened pretty late too, so definitely a good snack break while studying at night. read more

The Joe's Pizza on the University of Michigan central campus is a popular Midwestern outpost of one of America's most iconic NYC-based pizza joints. Joe's original flagship pizzeria is located on Carmine Street (near Bleecker St) in the heart of Manhattan's trendy Greenwich Village. It gained national prominence when it served as a movie set for the 2004 blockbuster film Spider-Man 2. Joe's original restaurant in the Village was opened in 1975 by an Italian immigrant from Naples, Italy. Just as many NYC pizzerias do, Joe's offers its New York-style pizza "by-the-slice". The Ann Arbor outpost opened two years ago and attracts hoards of UM students, many with East coast roots, at its busy "South U" location just off Michigan's Diag. I sampled a slice of Joe's Supreme Pizza served on the stereotypical white paper plate...exactly like I remember getting so many times in Manhattan. My oversized single slice was generously loaded with NY-style sausage, 'shrooms, red onions, diced tomatoes and Joe's mozzarella cheese. The crust was also authentic NYC-style suitable to roll up as you scarf down a slice on the go. I'm not generally a huge fan of New York style pizza but I've got admit, Joe's makes a killer pie. I found it to be fresh, a nice combo of spicy & sweet and delicious. Four months ago, Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sport and a U of Michigan alum, rated Joe's-Ann Arbor a 7.7. After arriving in Ann Arbor super late, my boyfriend and I were on the hunt for something to eat. Joe's Pizza was open and within walking distance, so we decided to walk over and pick up a slice. When we arrived, the store was quiet. It's summer break for school, so I assume this is a slower time for them. It was about an hour before they were scheduled to close, but it was definitely clear that they were trying to close up shop ASAP. I definitely felt like my presence was an inconvenience to the staff. I was glancing at the menu on the wall, but they directed me to the pizza in display and said "this is all we have." I totally understand this, it's natural for them to not want to make a whole other pie if they won't have many more clients, it just felt like there was a tone of aggravation or frustration that we were there. We ordered a slice of cheese pizza and a slice of mozzarella and ricotta. Both slices were barely warm. The crust of the mozzarella and ricotta was definitely indicative of a good NY slice and had a really nice crunch to it. The slice of cheese pizza... not so much. The slice of cheese pizza was soggy and I didn't care for the sauce. I would definitely like to try Joe's pizza when the pizza is fresher and the staff isn't trying to pack up and leave. This was the perfect place for a quick post marathon meal. After finishing the race, I was craving pizza and wanted it quick. Joes's serves up NYC pizza by the slice. Typical process of choose your slice and it's warmed to order. This resulted in a slice cooked with a perfectly crisp bottom crust, but not too hard or crunchy. The prices are reasonable and a variety bottled drinks (Diet Coke for me) are available to grab from the large refrigerator. The indoor seating area is small, but there is a counter around the perimeter of the room that optimizes the space. Outdoor tables are also available. Extra note: they do have a public restroom which is good. read more

I got to try this place out around 5:30pm for dinner on a weekday. Since they just opened this location, I was surprised to see there was no one in line. I ordered a slice of the caprese and supreme pizzas. The slices are super huge; they need two plates to fit side by side. After you order the pizza, they put them in the oven to heat them up a little while you pay. There is not a lot of seating within the restaurant, and the seating that does exist is kind of messy since no one really cleans off the tables after people finish eating. They have parmesan and pepper flakes on random tables within the restaurant for customers to take as they wish. In regards to the food, the pizza was pretty good! The pizza is fairly thin, so two slices are not super filling despite the huge size. The crust is to die for, and the pizza is not too salty or greasy. The flavor of the caprese was both light and flavorful, and the supreme was a great meaty pizza. I like how they slice the sausage instead of having chunks of sausage like other pizza places. My biggest complaint is that the pizzas were not heated up adequately. By the time I sat down, the pizzas tasted like they had not even been in the oven. Despite this, I would definitely recommend trying out this place if you haven't been, the pizza is definitely unlike any other pizza place in Ann Arbor! read more

I have tried to go here the last couple times visiting Ann Arbor but parking can be a challenge if you don't know your way around. Finally went to the parking garage near by and walked and glad I did. The pizza was pretty good and the price was in line with what I would expect. I'm going to preface this by stating that I don't know what the original location's supposed to taste like. Now getting that point across, I have a non-biased point of view of this location. I also like to point out that I don't give 5 *'s lightly, if at all. While it's pizza WAS pretty darn good,.... the pricing was completely ridiculous. $30 for a 2 topping pizza is a bit much. Now that price might seem weird, but I got their fresh mozzarella, sausage and pepperoni. I'll state that their crust was really good, salted and with a good texture/crunch. But the sauce and the toppings are where it failed me personally. Pepperoni tasted like that generic run of the mill pepperoni that you could probably buy from GFS,... This is just my misguided opinion, but I expected crispy cupping pepperoni that I've become accustomed to in more traditional NYC pizza's these days and age. Sausage was,.... tasty on it's own, but it was so thin and honestly might as well not have been there. As a whole on the pizza it didn't add much. Appearance sake it looks like boiled sausage just cut thin and tossed on. Cheese, as one would hope with this purchase, was the shining point. When it was warm, it was really good! I honestly wish I had gotten something more traditional like Ricotta instead of sausage. TBH I don't even honestly know if they offer that. Sauce,.... the sauce was WEIRDLY sweet. Not only that, but it was rather thin and after the short delivery it was causing the dough to become soft and lose it's texture toward the middle. On top of the pizza, I ordered their Roni-sticks. Man,... it's WEIRD. The sticks were good, don't get me wrong. But it was basically pizza sticks, it had cheese sauce and pepperoni. That being said, for some reason this sauce was SPICY instead or sweet, which is super confusing considering their pizza sauce was sweeter than molasses. Long story short, price maybe 2x what I feel it was worth, but still a good one time off purchase. This pizza and sticks with delivery and tip was a daunting $51 (trust me, not proud of this one either). Call me a pizza noob or whatever, but I'll stick with dominos and jets. read more

Now I did go at 11:30, and there was maybe 6 selections out at the time. I had a pepperoni and supreme. While they were big, the pizza was cool but not great. I generally don't leave 5 star reviews but Joes definitely deserves it! I have been there multiple times and they are always quick and reliable - even at 2 in the morning. Everyone seems to work incredibly hard and the pizza is quite delicious and inexpensive. I feel like this place definitely deserves the hype and I am so glad we have one in Ann Arbor. My friend and I were in AA and decided to stop in. My friend did not like the pizza, they only took one bite. They ordered the white pizza. I ordered the caprese and the cheese pizza. I really liked it more than other times. I thought the sauce was really good and there was a perfect amount of sauce. The ingredients for the caprese were fresh. I did take some to go for my family and they did not like it at all. The reason for the low rating is because the pizza was partially burnt. Also, the worker did not understand that we were getting 3 slices initially and he only gave us two. I realized because he only charged us for two. Also, they ended up being out of the cheese 5 minutes later. It did not seem like they were being efficient and making more pizzas even though they still had about 3 hours until close. read more

It was not better than some of the best in NYC, but it was comparable to La Famiglia but not Pizza Suprema. Classic New York style pizza by the slice. You know exactly what you're getting. Standard cheese or pepperoni is ~$3-4/slice. Supreme is ~$5/slice. The ranch is expensive and the serving is like twice or three times what you need - it's a partnership with Zingerman's. Not my favorite ranch but not bad. Expect the service to be no frills.
