Joe's oh how I love thee! Located inside the fab little Barton Hills Market is this glorious pizza shop. I love that red sauce like mad. It really reminds me of the homemade pizza my Nana would make when we were kids. The toppings are incredibly fresh too. I get so irritated when places use that cheap and wax-like cheese. So gross. Not the case here. Same goes for all of the toppings...FRESH! The owner, Joe, is pretty cool and friendly. Nice guy to chat with. I sometimes like to throw out the adjective, bombtastic. Note, I said sometimes. Only if it is really warranted. And believe you me, it's warranted in this case! As someone else mentioned, it's a great treat after a day at Barton Springs. Aw heck, it's a great treat anytime in my book. Remember, this is inside a convenience store so it's not a restaurant. Grab the goodness and go! THIS IS A TAKEOUT-ONLY PIZZA COUNTER INSIDE A CONVENIENCE STORE. I'm starting with that because I genuinely don't understand why none of the earlier reviews mentioned it, and I'm hoping to help avoid someone else being confused the way we were. Joe's Slice of Sicily describes itself as authentic NYC-style pizza with a crispy thin crust and standout garlic knots. With its near-perfect Yelp rating, I was expecting a lot. Overall, I liked it, and I do think they're doing good stuff, but it's not a five-star spot for me yet. 1) Takeout-only setup: My husband and I were out on a super casual date night, so this wasn't about vibes or ambiance. The issue was that nothing on their Yelp profile or website indicates that this is a takeout-only spot (and as they're still kinda new, there weren't enough Yelp photos to make that obvious). So our plan was to go to a casual pizza place, order a full pie, and hang out and eat it hot and chat. Instead, we walked in and realized there was nowhere to eat on site (not even a ledge, small counter, a few stools, nothing). For a place selling slices, something that's best eaten immediately, that felt like a mismatch. We also live too far away for a full pie to make sense. So we pivoted and ordered one slice just to taste it, shared it while standing awkwardly between the pizza kitchen and the wine racks, and then left to go elsewhere. 2) The pizza: Now the pizza itself. We got a pepperoni slice. The sauce is really good, the cheese ratio is solid, the pepperoni quality is good, and the toppings stay put when you pick it up, which matters. My main issue was the dough. For me, if you're going for NYC-style, it needs that balance of a light crispy bottom with enough elasticity to fold. This one was a little too brittle and/or just cooked too much. It kind of snapped when you bit into it and couldn't really fold it without breaking. It also felt a bit bland. The leftover crust edge, which I usually like to eat, was so dry, very crunchy, and lacking flavor, I threw it out, which I almost never do. It did seem like they might be understaffed, as there was some evident confusion about who was watching cooking times, so it's possible our slice was just overcooked. I'd be willing to try a full fresh pie again when the weather improves and we can take it to a nearby park, or if we're hanging at a friend's place closer to the shop. For now, solid four stars, but not quite the five-star slice the rating suggests. read more

The Barton Hills Market looks like a neighborhood convenience store until you walk in the doors and the smell. The smell like my Sicilian Nonna's house coming from the back at Joe's pizza. As you approach, your eyes see the freshly made goodies and a menu that you begin to salivate at and totally forget about anything to do with not eating carbs in that moment. You are greeted by owner and baker Joe who is what you think of when you think of a NYC pizza owner. Nice, pleasant and his mind is running a million miles an hour. I ordered the meat lovers pizza and had him hold the bacon and ham. I could not resist the calzone and the garlic knots. He told me he was a little behind and it would be ready in about 30. No worries! Drove around a little and went back to be handed back my pizza, knots and calzone. Once in the car, I had to take a piece and I have to say, being a NY girl, this brought me home on so many levels. the smell , the taste, the abundance of meat. Joe explained that because I had him hold the ham and bacon, he just sdded more pepperoni and sausage. I usually do not like a pepperoni pizza because I can not stand the burnt edges. This pizza was perfect. The thin crust and the sauce was perfect. Joe even told me how to reheat the pizza when I got home. Had the calzone with family and was able to split into 3 portions. Filled with riccota that was creamy, fresh and had sauce on the side. The garlic knots had just enough garlic and parm to hit the spot. Meal easily fed 5 people and I kept a slice for me for another day. The price point is great and I will definitely go back! Such a cute hidden gem in the Barton Hills neighborhood. Overall - bland. The slice had a crunchy crust as I like it, but lacked flavor as did the sauce. Crust and sauce make the pizza and I failed to recognize anything distinctive about the pizza and why it gets such rave reviews. So, nless I got a slice from a bad pie, I'd suggest going somewhere else. YMMV. read more

Stumbled in here after ACL and so glad I did. The pizza was unreal and the flavors were authentic. We tried two trio slices and two pepperonis. The pesto and red sauce on the trio were out of this world, so fresh and flavorful. The pepperoni was crispy and the crust was perfect. While we waited, they even handed us a warm fried Oreo which was such a nice touch. I can't wait to come back and try the gyros. The nacho and tortellini slices were also calling my name. Highly recommend this spot and will definitely be back post-ACL. Bonus points for offering gluten-free crust! read more

Hands down the best breakfast sandwich I've had in Austin. Joe's Slice of Sicily absolutely nailed the brand new breakfast sandwiches The bread was clearly fresh baked--perfectly crusty on the outside but soft and tender on the inside, which already put it on another level. The filling was generous, balanced, and packed with flavor without being greasy or heavy. Excellent people, great pizza and soon they're adding pasta - which they let me try for free when I mentioned I was new to the neighborhood. Very welcoming. Joe was in the back (owner) and Sam worked the front and was super friendly right off the bat. If you're in the area (or maybe leaving Barton Springs) and want something fast, good and easy go to Joe's for pizza by the slice (very reasonably priced) and the pasta exceeded my expectations! We found Joe's searching for a slice of pizza after a day at Barton Springs. Yes it is inside a convenience store, no there is no place to sit. Didn't matter. Joe was incredibly nice, answered our questions and we ordered two slices made to order. I wondered if a single slice would be enough, and it most definitely was! Great flavor, perfect slice no matter how you fold it. Make sure to get napkins before you leave, you're going to need them! Convenience store was also a little treasure with an outstanding beverage selection to go with our slices. Next time we are in Austin, we will go back to Joe's. read more

This place is great. The egg sandwich's are literally the best in Austin. The in house made Kaiser rolls really make a difference! In my opinion it's better than the eggman. Then there's the pizza! This is hands down the best New York style pizza I've had in Texas. The crust has the perfect snap and fold. The sauce to cheese balance is on point. If you're craving the real deal pizza in ATX stop doubting and go here now. Portions are generous service is friendly and it's clearly made with serious care. FINALLY. FINALLY. FINALLY! Finding pizza in Austin has been a miserable affair. I've been here 14 months. Followed all of the "influencers" recommendations. Gave up. Ordered Joes tonight on a whim because it's somehow popped up on Google. They get buried in the delivery apps for whatever reason. This pizza is fantastic. This is my favorite pizza in the city. Simply put, the best pizza I've had in Austin. We got slices of the Lasagna Pizza, Nonna Pizza, and plain cheese pizza as well as the garlic knots. Possibly the stinkiest pizza I've ever had the displeasure of smelling. I could not get past the scent of this pie to taste it, but my partner, as brave as he is, tried this pizza. The pizza was dry, greasy, and sloppy all at once. Not to mention $30 for a medium. The cheese was congealed, the sauce was bitter. And the crust was doughy. We ordered this pie on DoorDash 30 min prior to picking it up, and it was not even thought of being made by the time we arrived. It was hastily slapped together- and it looked that way! When I heard my favorite local bodega was getting a pizza place I was skeptical, but this place is amazing. It's exactly the type of by-the-slice pizza I love, delicious, thin, crispy crust, big slices, great toppings, ready so fast. Joe is also so nice and will make your day. I struggle with the impossible parking situations at my other favorite spots Home Slice and Hoboken Pie so another huge plus is a big, easy parking lot! The cashier was staring at me (while the music was playing far too softly) and I felt pressured to order as soon as possible. I went ahead and ordered three pieces of pizza which were the following slices: one Sicilian pepperoni, one NY pepperoni, and one Granny OG rosemary and feta. The staff was fairly young, and it did not seem like there was much direction for management over the operation. The reason I mentioned this is because of the fact that I found a black hair on my Sicilian slice and three of the gentlemen working had black hair and were constantly adjusting their fall caps. Now for the taste: sadly the best pizza was not the NY slice or the Sicilian -- it was the Granny OG Rosemary feta slice. The pizza base a.k.a. the crust was very crunchy, and the top was perfectly sauced and had a nice balance of all of the components to it. The problem with the New York slice was that it was overcooked and it did not have any drop to it. The Sicilian slice was too thick and had far too much sauce. Overall, I do not think that they should be charging this much money for the quality of the pizza that was served. I had to ask the cashier to re-fire my pizza slices and although he apologized, it just didn't feel like the five-star establishment I keep reading about.
