I have met a lot of dishonest mechanics and that's why I do all my own work but unfortunately for us car owners California is a real unfriendly place. This guy tells me over the phone that he can smog my porsche boxster. Now I told him over the phone multiple times if he had experience working on this particular car and he affirmatively said yes. In order to do a smog check on a boxster you need to partially disassemble the soft top convertible remove some molding and the speaker box and the engine cover so they can do a visual inspection of the emission components. He assured me that he had done this in the past. I take the car in and go out to watch him. I see him struggle to operate the convertible top which insists of a release hatch and an electric motor. So at this point I wisely asked him to get out and give me my paperwork and my keys as he has obviously never worked on this particular car. read more

this use to be my go to place. but all of a sudden they became joe's shaddy shack. i got a smog done, my car wasn't making any type of weird noises until they tinkered around with my car to get it to pass smog. i went back and told them that it was making a weird noise and they treated me without concern, and directed me to another shop in tracy to fix the problem that they caused. not to meantion eva was very rude while walking by, stating hey joe what are we running a free shop now. as if i hadn't spent hundreds of dollars with this shop. i will never take my cars to them again. they get your money, then when there work has issues that don't want to take the time to correct fix it. on to the next customer they go leaving your car in worst shape before you took it to them. shaddy!!!! read more

Joe's smog shack was told that a vacuum leak was detected at brakemasters on my 05 honda.. check engine light was on. Joe's never ran a smoke leak test. Instead they replaced brand new parts just replaced by brakemasters 2 days before. And billed me almost $460.00 They promised me the parts were never replaced by brakemasters. Which is a lie.i watched brakemasters replace those parts myself. Also the check engine light came back on as soon as I got on the road. Joe's smog shack is a complete scam...liars and thieves..my buddy ran a smoke test and fixed the leak in minutes for less than $50...sooner or later this shop will be caught by the state of california beaureau of automotive repairs division. As the complaints are piling up. I'd like the option to choose ZERO stars, but Yelp doesn't have that! My car did not pass smog for the 1st time in the 15 years I've had it. The code was a P0455 (EVAP- LARGE LEAK). I checked out Joe's Smog Shack via Yelp, as well as others. Eva answered and gave me a quote on the diagnosis, which was $95, so I figured it wouldn't hurt. BTW: most reputable smog repairs will apply the cost of diagnosis to repairs made over a certain amount, not Joe's! I had mentioned in our phone call, that I just had the fuel pump replaced in February. She said, that they would have to diagnose it before making any assumptions. I took it in on a Monday morning. Then I get a call that afternoon, saying that after the Smoke Diagnosis Test, it would take $285.00 to DROP THE TANK and fix the fuel hoses connected to the pump. I'm having a heart attack at this point. Almost $300 BUCKS! I said "no thanks" and took my car! So I did some homework. 1st, the fuel hoses are already factory connected to the pump. If it's a faulty pump, then it's covered under warranty if it has one. Otherwise, they're simply plug ins. Joe's also mentioned that my fuel pump was replaced at 121,000 MILES as INDICATED ON THE TANK! The new one was replaced at 168,000 miles! Well, whomever wrote that on the tank ( white grease pen) was the previous mechanic about 3 years ago that replaced it.....the writing did not indicate that the new fuel pump was installed in Feb of this year as I mentioned in the initial phone call! They NEVER ASKED about the writing to see if it was indeed accurate. I did some more homework....I found via a mechanic friend of mine in Sunnyvale, that you might want to check your gas cap. So I took it to him, he said the seals were worn and I went and bought a $12.00 GAS CAP at Monument in Tracy. Then my buddy put it through a code reader..........cleared the codes to get the check engine light to go off. He then advised to drive at LEAST 60 miles to reset the monitors. ROAD TRIP! Went to the Smog Test center where I initially failed smog. PASS! So.......my question is.....WHY didn't Joe's NOT check the gas cap? I can almost guarantee there would have been smoke leaking from there! I mean really? Are they THAT incapable of being diligent enough to rule out other possibilities as to why the car did not pass smog? Not very thorough guys! Let's see, $285.00 VERSUS $12.00? NO BRAINER! People, DO YOUR HOMEWORK before having your car smog repairs looked at. Check ALL possibilities and go to different places ...............but stay away from this place! Hell, when I went to go pick up my car, they failed to have enough forethought to give me my DMV paperwork back when I paid for the diagnosis. I'm partially to blame on THAT one since I should have known they can't run a front office. read more

Eva is the only good thing about this shop. They replaced my engine which had to be ordered and replaced twice. After waiting a month to get my car back, I had to pay over 5 thousand. My vehicle still had issues with the engine afterwards and l had to take it back on several occasions. I just found out from another shop in TRACY that the front rotors I paid to have replaced last June at Joes was not performed but I was charged over $250 for the "work". This may be a good shop for some but I won't be back. read more

Heres the deal, i took my truck to a different smog shop, 96 chevy dually, the guy said it wouldnt pass because at idle the hydrocarbons were to high and needed to replace the cats. Took to Joe, with in a few minutes of talking to him he felt it would pass based on the infomation that I had given him, these trucks cant come from high idle then read the low idle settings, no matter if I put new cats on it or not, you would end up with the same reading. Needless to say it passed without buying 500.00 plus in cats. Thanks, I would recommend him to family and friends, as he was recommended to me by a friend. read more

Don't take your truck there!!! this place is a rip off. I paid $95.00 to diagnose a miss fire problem. They told me I needed a new motor. All's they did was check my engine codes. I did not believe them. Took my truck to the Toyota dealer and they found a bad fuel injector. I agree with every bad review about Joe's Smog Shack. read more

Car ran great when I dropped it off. I brought car in to have cam sensor replaced and a smog test. Picked up car, drove short freeway distance and when I come to a stop my oil pressure drops almost to the red, then up a bit, then down to the red and now the light is on. I call following day and take car back. I took car back four more times. Each time they told me it was this or that and I gave benefit of doubt and authorized them to make repairs that I knew had nothing to do with the oil pressure problem. The last time they had car for over three weeks. At the end of first weeks he calls and says he can't find part anywhere, to which I replied strange I looked them up to see prices before I authorized work and there were lots of them online and even local dealership could get them. Another week for part to get here and another week for him to put it in. He calls late Friday afternoon and says we can pick it up today or tomorrow morning. It's late afternoon, I opt for tomorrow morning. I arrive at nine and there is a sign in window "closed 'til Tuesday". Picked car up Tuesday and still there is no oil pressure. But it gets worse, it now has a REALLY bad idle and every time you accelerate the parking light comes on AND that annoying ding starts. It has NEVER done this before. Also the car has a self leveling suspension system that you could hear running for several minutes after shutting the car off and it no longer is working either. From the second time I took the car in I suggested to find the oil pressure problem he should look at the original work performed on the very first visit because that's when/where the problem started. I at first thought he was avoiding this because it was a labor intensive job and if he found a mistake he or staff had made the cost for second round of labor would be on him. He never did go back over that original work nor did he ever fix the oil pressure or lack of. The last time I picked up car he was told me that my catalytic converter was going out but that he did not do those. He told me there was nothing wrong with my car and that he would not be working on it anymore. His website says he stands behind his work, HE DOES NOT, and it also says (or it did when I came home and that day and checked anyway) that he does work on catalytic converters. So from that So there's nothing wrong with my car . . but the catalytic converter is going out? He tells me he doesn't do those but his website said otherwise. I wasn't sure if this guy was incompetent or just a crooked business owner until the last time I picked up car. He contradicted himself and basically gave outright lies. In the end I believe that he is both a crooked business owner as well as an incompetent mechanic. If he had known what he was doing my car would be running and this would be a positive review, it's unfortunately all negative. read more

10 months ago Truck wouldn't pass smog...so I took it to Joe's, ran diagnostic and said it was in need of a part....so authorized to replace part and still no pass. Ran another diagnostic and now it's a different part....so replaced that part and still no pass....so ran another diagnostic and now it's fuel pump and idle control module...so changed those also and mind you every diagnostic was being charged around $85 so the diagnostic themselves we're adding up...in the end i did some calling around and found out if you spend a certain amount on your repair and it still doesn't pass the SMOG REFEREE will sign you off on a one time deal to get your tags...at this point we were way pass that amount and Joe's smog shack neglected to give me that info.... needless to say we parted ways with over $1000 in repairs and no smog pass! And the fuel pump that was so expensive because it was supposedly top of the line went out 2 months ago so this time I changed it myself for $89 dollars....seems like they were content to just throw parts at the repair until we passed all the while charging an arm , foot and a leg......STAY AWAY!!!!!!! read more

Joe is so honest and reasonable! My sons car kept dying and we took it in for Joe to check it out. It looked like the alternator was bad from the readings so we left it for a new alternator to be put in. While pulling it apart they noticed the battery connections underneath had corrosion and cleaned it and retried the alternator, which is fine now! Eva called us and told us we could pick it up and instead of $250 it was only $75! Now how often does that happen? well if you go to Joe's it could! I had some issues with my Land Rover and after calling around to other shops, another garage in town recommended them, since it seems like no one else in Tracy wants to even touch a Land Rover. I was able to bring it in that morning and they had it diagnosed and parts ordered much faster then I was expecting. It was a bad coil but they ended up doing a tuneup since it needed it anyways. After I picked it up I ended up having an issue, but it ended up being just a loose connection and they fit me in on a busy Saturday morning to take a second look at it. Joe was the one to help me for the second go around, and I cannot say enough great things about the service. I will definitely be bringing it back in for other work. read more

Took my 1979 F100 truck here as it wouldn't pass the smog via my original mechanic. Joes found a problem with the EVAP fuel system and also the vacuum hose routing my prior mechanic couldn't fix. They fixed and it passed with flying colors. They also found the carb I just had fitted was faulty - again, something my other mechanic didn't detect and he fitted it!! Used to like this place, but it seems to be an issue bringing my vehicle in. I only go to this place because of Joe. The fact there is more than 1 mechanic working on my vehicle is a problem especially when the vehicle comes back in. The technician who fixed it should be the one to continue working on it, not someone else who has no idea what the issue was the first time. My car was in several times, still never fixed the issue. The fact that the mechanics couldn't figure out the issue, yet I did and replaced it myself is an issue. I knew from the start what it was, its common sense. My o2 sensors went out twice, that means the vehicle obviously is running rich which means its gonna be an issue with the fuel system. I knew it was either my fuel filter or fuel injectors which I even mentioned when I brought it back in. It also had a misfire code as well. There was a ton of fuel in my gas and the vehicle was still idling rough. The only thing fixed was my o2 sensors. The issue which killed them in the first place wasnt fixed. Replacing them without finding out why the vehicle is running rich defeats the purpose of paying the $300 to have them done in the first place. Im not sure if there is too much work for them to diagnose properly or what but it took me ten minutes to figure an issue that trained mechanics couldnt figure out after having my car for a few days. Im all for bringing my business here but when it comes to paying for a diagnostic, just throwing ideas at what it might be is no different than looking into a crystal ball and giving you an answer. read more

Needed car smogged. The check engine light was on. We asked them to diagnose and repair before running smog. They ran smog anyway. It failed and he told us we needed an oil sensor. We had that done, car passed smog and we picked car up. Car now has no oil pressure. We took it back. He says we need a new oil sensor and a motor mount. So we had that done. Car still has no oil pressure and is now missing. We took it back but in the meantime the starter went out so we had it towed to shop. They fixed starter but can find no reason for oil pressure problem but he says we need a new harmonic balancer and this should fix the problem. After nearly 3 weeks, he says it's ready to pick up. There is still no oil pressure and the car barely runs. It dies at every stop light. Now he says we need a new catalytic converter. We said no we won't pay another cent. The car ran beautifully before we went to this place and $1700 later, it is undrivable. Per the bureau of automotive repair, we gave him one last chance to make this good before we pursue a remedy. He refused to work on it again. Now we're wondering if our car really passed smog. I would give negative 5 star if I could. PS - their website says they stand behind their work. Lol read more

This place has reasonable prices and they have excellent car service but the one thing I will complain about is the front desk assistant. She was taking personal calls and taking care of personal business on my time. The guy who finished the smog test on my car brought her the paper and I had to wait 20mins for her to finish up texting whoever she was texting, being on her laptop, and take care of what ever personal business she had to take care of. I left unhappy, that would be the only reason I would not recommend this place. read more

Worst place ever!!! Brought my car in for smog on a Wednesday. Waited a half an hour to turn in my car because they were too busy talking about their personal lives. Anyways, they told me it would be done by noon and they would call me. No call Wednesday. Thursday at 4:30 pm they still hadn't called so I called....still not done. Friday at 4:30 I call STILL NOT DONE. They then tell me I need to pick it up by 5 and drive it on the freeway to see if it passes smog because they couldn't get around to doing it (Probably because they're too busy standing round BSing.) but they're closed on the weekend so bring it in Monday and they'll finish but I have to pay them $120 for the work they've done(what work it still isn't smogged!). Come Monday.... "oh we're going to need $95 more dollars and we wont have your car done today because we had a lot of people bring their cars in" WHAT!!!! They're the ones who told me to bring it back! A week later, nothing done and no idea when they can finish.... that's a lot different than "be done by noon" Paid almost $200 for my car to be gone for a week with nothing done. Took it to another shop who had it done in 5 hours. I feel very scammed. read more

Not too familiar in the area but car had problems and took it there couple days back. The shop just seemed fishy to me. The workers there really treated me different and it just didn't feel right. As said in another comment, there are many racist postings in the shop and that made me feel uncomfortable. Certainly not a place I want to visit again. read more
