All were done excellently, and at a very reasonable price. (Sam charges before the repair, so there's no surprise high cost). Once I went in to have a shoe stretched to have room for a bandaged toe, and he said that the shoe material would spring back within a couple days. So he recommended instead, that I remove the thick inner pad until the bandage came off; he cut a thin leather to replace it, at very low charge. Another visit, I was second in line when a lady came in to pick up a glossy red shoe that had been severely scuffed. Sam had matched the color perfectly, but no one could have restored the full gloss where it flexed. But the lady was not satisfied. So Sam refunded her money completely, despite having done a couple hours' work. He is competent, helpful, and ethical. That's the way he does business.

I found Bay State and called the store to find out their hours and talked to the owner. Luckily, they were open on Saturday morning just long enough for me to drop my shoes off and possibly pick them up on the same day. The store is in downtown Haverhill (not in the heart of downtown, just on the edge) and has ample free parking. It is a an older building and the repair shop is a bit worn, but I don't really care about how it looks as long as my shoes get fixed correctly! The owner looked over my shoes, said he could repair them in 1/2 hour and even offered to replace the elastic strap on the other shoe before it failed as well. I asked him to clean them as well, and his estimate was just $15. When I went back after 30 minutes, they were indeed ready at the stated estimated price. He did a great job on the stitching (it is even and looks professional) and they are fixed and look like new! Great price and great work = 5 stars.

It took him two days, but he replaced both heels with Vibrams and replaced the nails under the sole with better ones. They were also cleaned and polished. A zipper came off one of my favorite Frye booties. They were sent to another shoe repair which threw on a new cheap looking stopper and pull which did not match (which bugged me), and broke immediately, after costing $40. On a whim I stopped in Arcade Shoe Repair, which I found on Google. He found a zipper that perfectly matched my other bootie, and had them fixed up in no time! Pricing was very reasonable at $25 for boots worth over $200. I noticed he even cleaned up the heels a bit which had some marks from a foster puppy chewing on them a little. I'm really appreciative and never going anywhere else for leather repair. I also love how the shop has a museum feel!
