Stay far away. Went for State Safety Inspection. Car has received every recommended service work from dealership since purchased Gili's came up with approx $3000 of work. I took the car to another auto repair shop that no longer does safety inspections and they went over the car and said none of the failings on the report needed to be corrected. at this time. Also Gillis charged a credit card fee without informing the customer which is unallowable Wish I had done more research prior to taking my car to their business. read more

I brought my 2016 Ram 1500 diesel to Gillis's shop due to a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) issue. The dashboard displayed an error message indicating that the DPF was full and could not regenerate. After paying nearly $300 for diagnostics, I was told that the DPF and all exhaust temperature sensors needed to be completely replaced--at a quoted subtotal of over $5,000. Wanting a second opinion, I visited another shop. That mechanic explained that regeneration failures can sometimes be caused by inconsistent readings from the exhaust temperature sensors, not necessarily a faulty DPF. He tested the sensors and found a clear imbalance: two sensors read 32°C, while the third read 45°C. After replacing the faulty sensor, the DPF resumed regeneration normally. The total cost of the repair--including diagnostics, sensor replacement, and labor--was just a fraction of what Gillis's quoted. My truck is now running perfectly. Based on this experience, I do not believe Gillis's Automotive has adequate expertise with diesel trucks, and I cannot recommend their services. read more

First, there was no free inspection, and once they failed my vehicle and wanted over $2000 in repairs, I got my vehicle inspected the following day for $85. AVOID GILI'S!!! I used this shop for a pre-purchase state inspection and they failed to notice that the entire parking brake assembly was missing. The e-brake inspection is a two part test, so obviously they cut corners, did not perform either test, and passed it anyways. They also did a faulty repair on the power steering lines which now fails inspection. I am left paying $3,000 additional to fix these issues. First time going to Gili's, they were able to get our car in quick for state inspection the next day by appointment. My usual places the car would to have to stayed for 2 days. Didn't really have the time or ability to keep one of our cars somewhere for that long, so to Gili's we went, we dropped it off the night before (which they were totally fine with), took care of the inspection in a timely manner (where done when they said they would be) and got us on our way. They were helpful with some of the questions I asked as well and the customer service face to face and over the phone was great. Not one problem and they stayed to their word which is always helpful. Very clean and tidy mechanics shop (yes, thats possible) and it's in a very central location in Rockville near Twinbrook, so it's accessible from lots of different directions. I came here at 8:45 AM , they got my vehicle and after 30 mins they told me the price is $144 for the installation , I agreed , I have waited for 3 hours and few mins , then They said the Trailer Hitch is not the right size ! Really? Really? I went there because of problems with a radiator coolant leak and a scary braking issue. Nice guys, yes...but when it was finally looked at I was told they'd have to mess with the exhaust manifold ($650+), the brake booster ($425+), plus an advised brake fluid flush ($100+) and steering fluid flush ($100+). All told, $1600 counting tax. Not a happy camper. Anyhow, I wound up getting the car towed to another mechanic fixed everything for under $800 for the essentials. Unlike some people I was paying out of pocket (as opposed to insurance paying for it), so of course I care about the total cost and for why. The fact is my car is running fine and not leaking, and I didn't have to pay $1600. Seriously, if the estimate had been more reasonable I wouldn't be complaining. But I walked away from this feeling like I was about to get fleeced. Not good. Sad to say. read more

Was failed on the MD State Inspection. Got it fixed elsewhere, passed afterwards. I actually didn't mind that my car failed the inspection. Felt it was fair and by the law. What did not sit well with me was after my inspection/invoice were printed, they had me wait, because one rotor was "7/10,000ths of an inch" below spec. After hearing that, my radar went off. As I was headed out the door, I was then told it would cost me $30 for the rotor re-inspection if I take care of it on my own. (Which they forgot to charge me on re-inspection cause it was probably a made up charge to begin with.) As for the repairs/maintenance, I did them + some elective maintenance per my own request at a shop down the street that was always transparent with me. That "7/10,000ths" cost $1120 in business. read more

After bouncing around to various garages and mechanics in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area, I was told by some of my neighbors how Gili's was worth a try. That was about 5 years ago and I have never visited another garage, repair place or dealer since. Gili and his empathetic, knowledgeable staff are quick, professional and best of all cost efficient in offering different options about what kind of work needs to be done now versus later. They weigh the cost/benefits as if it were THEIR car. You rarely get that anywhere. I would not hesitate for a minute to recommend Gili's. They work on my foreign car and my wife's domestic van. They also did a superb job handling a fender bender about a year back. Nice to have the same faces time after time at a repair place - not a revolving door. Prices are fair and work is honest. I'll give them that they're quick and nice. But don't get fooled by the 5 star reviews. This place is here for the money and that's it. Went to get an inspection done and they told me 2 of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. They told me my indicator was out but i went right home afterwards and checke all of my lights and my indicators multiple times and confirmed that they weren't. They then told me that the shift knob has to show the gears on it because apparently it's a safety hazard even though I'm the only one driving my car. They also cited me for a bent rim when the rim is barely bent and there's no signs (that one is a little more understandable despite how dramatic it is) Every review that isn't 5 stars says the same thing. Went there for a state inspection and went out with a big bill to pay. I know Gili's had nothing to do with what was wrong with the car, but looks like they can play a lot with the state inspection their inspection, in order to pass, required - change back brakes pads - polish front lights - change front wipers which cost me a lot, at least I did not expect it, like $500 to change back brakes pads (parts under $60, the rest is labor) and $200 to polished the front lights, otherwise the inspection did not pass. It took 6 hours to run the inspection, when they told me 2 hours max. They gave me a ride since they had to keep my car in the shop, the rest is ok. I cannot certify that the job done was excellent or not, I assume yes, but definitely costly, a lot. read more

I had quite a bit of work performed by Gili's who saved me over $200 from my previous estimate. In addition, they offered an additional 5% off parts as they featured a promotion on YELP, which was an additional $60. Greg, the Service Manager, was very helpful and patient with explaining everything to me. He was honest enough to tell me that one of the items listed on the previous quote was not a problem and did not need to be fixed, which was another $169 that they could have charged me. I love the fact that they offer complimentary rides if needed, which they dropped me off to work and picked me up. I appreciated their honesty and customer service and would refer them to anyone in need of a honest and reliable auto shop. BTW, they also have a paint and body shop too. read more

Having just moved from out-of-state I used these guys based on Yelp reviews. I had to do an oil change, inspection and my cruise control was not working as well as my check engine light was on. With the latter two it just amounted to a loose gas cap. Although it is an easy fix and my happiness at not having to drop a bunch of money with a costly engine / CC repair may skew this review a bit - I am confident that this is an honest shop. One of the mechanics, Scott, was straightforward with me on the phone which was appreciated. BTW these guys got a Best of Bethesda award as well I believe. So you do not have to rely on Yelp it seems that the community favors these guys as well. read more

I'm not sure about Gili's . . . Went there 3 times in 2011 as a new customer. (1) BMW -- a MD inspection but came away with $1,200 of work to replace power steering hoses (leak) and engine belt (cracks). They wouldn't pass me on inspection unless I replaced the wipers ($99) which I declined and bought them from Amazon.com for $35 (set, dealers do charge $100 for the wiper pair). Later, I moved to VA so had another inspection & smog check ($65 down the ceramic crapper spent on MD). Was the pricing fair ?? I don't know . . . $1,200 wiped me out that month and the MD inspection hassle left me a little POed. 07/2013 -- I'm suspicious about them. When they replaced the power steering hoses, they didn't charge for fluid that needed to be drained and refilled which is a red flag when they cahrged for EVERY component provided. (2) Honda -- I wanted the coolant fluid changed, but the receipt showed "power flush for 15 minutes." --- a simple fluid change should have been about $100, but the "power flush" was $179. What's the difference between French Dry Cleaning and Regular Dry Cleaning? the price. I felt the same way about a Power Flush vs. Fluid Change. (3) 2003 BMW -- it's my wife's car and was trying to mount Winter Tires replacing her All Seasons. Discovered that the Wheels seized on the hub (again, really PO'ed since Gili's rotated them for me just 9 months ago, so they weren't rusting for years). Well, brought the car to Gili's and for $30, they pounded off the All Seasons and installed the Winter tires -- hope they didn't knock the suspension out of alignment. They did this as a "walk in" on 01/02, Monday after New Year's Sunday. All in all, they're OK and so give them a try. In the end, you want the work done or problem fixed, but want someone to do it right for a fair price. read more

I drive out here from DC because Gil's is the only mechanic shop I trust. My family and I have been taking our cars to Gils for over five years now and we have always received good service. Recently had our battery replaced (our Ford Escape has to be taken apart in order to have the battery replaced - so annoying) and they did a rush order for us (had to leave town the next day) and did it well! My check engine light was also on and Mike told us it was something to do with our transmission. I told him that I didn't have the budget to fix it right now and he was sympathetic. He said he would reset it and told me not to worry, just to come back in when the check engine light turned back on. The time before that, I had to repair my brakes. It was costly and he knew this was going to hurt my wallet. He threw in an oil change, new wipers, and topped off my fluids. Nice guys, good at what they do, and they genuinely care about keeping you safe. Sorry to see some bad reviews on here but it seems like they are all due to state inspection failures. read more

Our usual mechanic shut down for like a month, so when it came time for massive repairs and MD inspections for both of our vehicles, we looked to Gili's. Good call. I spent the better portion of this week over there. When it looked like I was going to have to be there for the long haul on day one, they gave me a ride over to the mall, and would've taken me by home but I had forgotten to grab the key off the ring I gave them. The guy offered to take me by again to get it, but I had already wasted enough of his time. The mall it was...(REFER TO MY REVIEW OF SBARRO FOR HOW THAT WENT!). In the end, they were honest and informative. I had a lot of time spent reading/sitting in their small lobby area to see them interact with other customers. Seems like they have a lot of regular and repeat business, so that's a really good sign. I do like Mr. Ke down at Best Auto Repair, and I'll definitely still bring work to him. But these guys made a strong showing for me. They do seem to have a lot of auto body work, so I may look to them when I need something like that done in the future. Overall a really good experience. Friendly staff. The owner was very visible and very involved and, most importantly, a solid and friendly professional. read more

Don't bother with the online reservation system, because the system apparently is broken. There's nothing worse than planning your day around an appointment time you've been confirmed to have, only to arrive and be told there's no way for them to do what your (confirmed! through the business's own appointment system!) appointment was for. In my case, I needed the MD inspection and an oil change; not even too difficult for them to schedule, you'd think, because they've done enough of these to know how long the services should take. Apparently not... I will not be trying to come back, because if a car mechanic can't get their system of getting people in the door right (you know, the foundation of running such a business), I don't trust them to do anything on my car. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 not because they deserve it but because I don't want to be one of those people who reviews a very specific part of a business and knock down the average because of it. read more

Overall pleased with Gili's. They tell you everything about what they recommend, and whether things can wait or are important to have done now or soon. They never make me feel dumb, and they have a shuttle that is too far for home, but i have them drop me at work or Whole Foods to wait. The only thing that I find frustrating is when I ask how long it will take, I mean "when will I have my car back," not "how long does the actual labor take, whether you start it now or in two hours. I make an appointment and assumed that when they said an hour, that meant I'd be on my way in around an hour. Not so. Nearly every time, it takes much longer; this last time, I waited longer than the hour that they said it would take and was then told the part had *just* arrived and it would be another hour. It was nearly two more hours. Very frustrating. So now, I'll be sure to ask: When will my car be available for me to drive away in it? read more

Definitely recommended! I was doing my maintenance here for the first time, when I searched for a place to have my oil changed. This place is in align with its great review. Clean and friendly, both front and back. I had oil change ($58) and tire rotation ($22). Plus a first time visit discount when checked in on Yelp. Total cost after tax is around $82. The maintenance is fast, i dropped the car at the place for oil change at around 4:30pm and received a call regarding extra service (tire rotation ) notification around 4:48. Then, within one hour maybe around 5:20pm, I was notified that the service was done. The next day I feels my car is a little heavier after service, so I was offered a test drive with the mechanics. We found no issues in the drive, but they still gave me a reasonable answer and promise to come back anytime if not satisfied. read more

Used Gili's to repair damage to my 04 Maxima sustained in a minor accident in a parking lot during the holiday season last year. What looked minor to the eye turned out to be over $3000 in damage! Gili's gave me a detailed estimate when I took my car there and the manager told me to make certain the insurance adjuster noticed everything he showed me was damaged. Luckily, the insurance adjuster did note all of the damage, and her estimate pretty much matched up with Gili's. Check in hand, I brought my car to Gili's to do the repair work. When I brought my car in, the lady behind the counter was extremely helpful. She gave me an accurate time table for the repairs (it took about 10 days), and told me that if they found additional damage they'd take care of contacting and dealing with the insurance company. Gili's did indeed find some hidden damage (about $400 worth) and took care of everything as promised. My car looked great when I picked it up. I checked all of the visible areas and they all looked good as new. I will definitely use Gili's again if I have body damage to my car in the future. read more
