After another exquisite hair color and highlights session with John, I decided to ask the receptionist, Elsa, if anyone was available on the spa side to do an eyebrow wax. She checked and said Maiya would be with my shortly. I've never been on the spa side of the salon, and it was glorious. Maiya's office was beautifully decorated and impeccably clean. Once upon a time, Patrik was the only stylist in the area who did curls. I stopped going to him after a several hundred dollar color correction. I heard other stylists telling him he wasn't doing what I wanted but he said it would be better. The salon doesn't do refunds and I couldn't go back since another mistake would mean I would have to wait for a color correction elsewhere. I switched my family to a different stylist who we love. She even got my curls back. With Patrik, I thought I could have length OR curls, not both. I didn't say anything. I didn't leave a review. I just didn't go back. But now he made my daughter cry and I can't stay quiet. My 17 year old daughter went back to him. I don't know what possessed him to give a 17 year old girl a "talk to the manager" cut but he butchered her hair. She was growing it out and it was finally past her shoulders. He made her feel ugly and stole her confidence. And again, after a visit to John James salon, I'm going to have to spend hundreds, if not more, to correct his work. Heads up local peeps!!!! Long post but worth the read. This post is an FYI for anyone wanting to use this company. Here's the story: Several years ago I purchased gift cards ($140) for myself to John James Salon in Annapolis. I did not use them right away because there was NO expiration date. So time goes by and I finally decide to use them to treat myself for my birthday. I call the company Valu-tec that the gift cards were through to verify that the $140 is still valid. The gentlman on the phone confirms my $140 to John James Salon is still VALID. Great! I tried calling John James Salon yesterday several times to make an appointment, but no answer. It turns out they are closed on Mondays even though their website and FB page states they are open on Monday. So this morming I call John James Salon and say that I am a new client and want to get a hair style and possible coloring. I mention that I have the gift cards to use. They have me talk to one of the owners, Hannah, who proceeds to tell me that they do NOT take gift cards because they are expired!!!!!! I explained to her all about verifying the amounts with the company Valu-Tec and she said because they are expired and they are a small business that thay do NOT take gift cards!!!! I really wanted to tell her off, but I held it in and decided to let the people on social media know that I would rather go bald before I use John James Salon. read more

Background: My wife is a 68 year old terminal cancer patient who has been getting expensive hair coloring/trims from John James in Parole for quite a while. These have been huge morale boosts, especially after chemotherapy. Unfortunately, given her illness, the reality is that her ability to keep an appointment changes almost daily. Review: When I called the salon on her behalf to cancel a scheduled appointment because she was too weak to travel, I was told that she was "banned" from booking with a particular stylist because she cancelled more than two appointments. I reminded the desk of her medical status and asked if she could book with another stylist. I was then told she was no longer welcome at the salon. I expressed dismay and asked to speak to the manager. I was put on hold, only to be told the manager was "busy". I asked for a callback, which I never got. This arrogant response is callous and dismissive to say the least, especially for a retail firm that charges upwards of $250+ a visit for salon service. The salon service is excellent but obviously the company doesn't care about customer service or loyalty. read more

Where do I begin? I purchased a Groupon for a massage at John James. I scheduled it for Sunday, 5/6. I called on Friday, 5/4 to confirm, only to find out from the receptionist that they are now closed on Sundays and "sorry no one called you." I rescheduled my massage for this Thursday evening. When I rescheduled, the receptionist asked if I wanted a male or female masseuse. I said female and the appt was scheduled. I arrived for my massage 15 min early. I checked in at the desk but no one told the masseuse I had arrived. I was surprised to have a male masseuse considering they specifically asked me for my preference, but whatever. The massage room is basically a closet adjacent to the waiting area. You can hear every noise, every conversation, every single thing. As soon as my massage started, I could hear the conversation occurring at the front desk and also the conversation being shouted across the room as one of the participants walked away. They talked about putting low lights in their hair and Beyonce. Look, I'm not even mad about that. I like Beyonce too. I guess where the appt took a turn was about 1/2 way through the massage, someone started vacuuming right outside the door. The person vacuuming was also still talking, but now talking much louder. She vacuumed the entire area outside of the massage room and even managed to bang into the wall of the massage room a few times... which I mean, who can blame her, considering the massage room is literally in the waiting area. So going from bad to complete absurdity: the vacuum got clogged. So imagine, if you will, a relaxing massage that you've been waiting for and planning your schedule around and omg you're so excited to get this massage and oh no someone is running a vacuum 5' away from your face and wtf is that noise, for god's sake there's something caught in the vacuum and it sounds like it's metal, but yes I also agree Beyonce looks great and yes Blue Ivy is a strange name for a baby. This is not a spa. This is a salon with a converted closet and massage table. read more

Very clean, cool and spacious. Since Alex has been cutting my hair and getting great Yelp reviews he is really busy, post pandemic is probably more responsible. Background: I have naturally curly and unruly hair that is growing from a pixie and is in the in-between stages (at my shoulders wet, just under my chin dry). Review: I have been a bit unhappy with the Deva Cut but had been using it just because it had a standard "cut every single curl," however I don't think it is for everyone. Every time I had gotten a Deva Cut, I cried because it never gave me volume and layers to take out the bulk around the middle of my head (you have to do that with curly hair). I always wore my hair up because of the bulk and unflattering cut. I had actually walked into the wrong salon when I met Ellen. She and I chatted for about a half hour talking about curly hair and what could/couldn't be done. She has 26 years experience and was absolutely wonderful! It helps that she has a daughter who also has curly hair. I settled on her as my stylist and I have to say, I now have a cut that doesn't look like a helmet up top and a tree at bottom (which was what was happening with my hair in the Deva Cut). She gave me layers, evened up the craziness from the other cuts, and took out the bulk that was giving me helmet head. This is, by far, the best haircut I have ever received, next to my pixie cut (which I got done in Texas). I can now wear my hair curly or straight and it looks great either way, unlike the Deva Cut where it is so choppy you have to wear your hair curly ONLY. I will be using Ellen every time I need a trim (growing out my hair at this time) and style. I have never been more happy with my hair! read more

Then charge me the high rates.. Not to mention they did not counsel on what was truly the best highlighting products for my hair.. It seemed they were in it for the volume and money.. I've been a loyal customer for years, have referred friends, and always tip 20% or more. This review pertains to their customer service. I had a scheduled apt yesterday, I left as early as I could, however due to a massive accident and highway closure, there was no way I could make it on time. I realized this before my scheduled time and called to let them know that I would be 10 minutes late (I'd already sat in 40 minutes bumper to bumper traffic, on what's normally a 15 minute drive). When I called in they said they would not see me. (Again ridiculous because I usually wait 10 minutes after I arrive before I'm seen). I don't think this is how you should treat a regular customer! I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on. My husband treated me to a massage and pedi at John James. The massage room was cold and dirty and I had to sit my D&B handbag on the floor! The blanket was too small to cover my body completely and the pillow had a dingy looking towel over it. The room was actually a thrown together make shift room where you could see a EXIT sign in the room that was covered with a sheet. The massage was suppose to last 60 mins but was over in 42mins which made me feel ripped off and then I waited for my pedi appt 15 mins passed the appt time. I headed to the front and explained my frustrations and cancelled the pedi appt. There was nothing relaxing about this spa and I would NOT recommend. read more

I don't often write negative reviews but after the experience I had at the salon today, I am now (hours later) laying in bed with what feels like whiplash and a massive headache, so I must warn people. First off let me say, I'm new to the area and was looking for a new place to get highlights. I was excited to try it out since the reviews were great. When I first sat down I noticed the lighting is awful in the salon. It washes you and makes you look 10yrs older in the mirror . It's so bad they ask you to look at your color when you are done in a mirror towards the front with natural lighting to see what your hair will look like properly. My stylist was Megan who was sweet, professional and did a decent job with the style and color. I'm not used to the technique of over highlighting your hair and then "glazing or toning it down." It came out a little lighter than I had wanted but it will do for summer. The main reason I am giving the salon a negative review is due to the shampoo girl!! I have had whiplash several times in my life and I'm certain I am suffering from it after the horrific shampoo I had today. First I sat down and she ripped the foil from my hair. I like to think I have a high pain tolerance so I didn't want to say anything but it became so painful that I asked if she could please be more gentle. Then as she washed she let water splash in my face, get in my ears and down my neck. I asked her for a towel and she just kind of handed it to me without saying a word. She scrubbed my head letting my neck and head bang around the bowl which became extremely painful. Because I had a glaze after my highlights I had to repeat the torture process. When she was done rinsing my hair she threw a towel around my neck without saying a word and just walked away. I have long hair so she left me with my hair down and wet and just walked over to the next client. I was shocked. I complained to my stylist who said, she must be having an "off day." I am now laying in bed right now with an ice pack on my neck all because the Shampoo girl had an off day. If Megan had not been sweet, I wouldn't have paid full price. People go to salons to relax and feel like they are being pampered, not beat up. I only gave it 2 stars for the lack of proper treatment by the shampoo girl. Otherwise I would give 3 or 4. I have been trying to get an appointment for eyelashes for a month. First time I called for an appointment in early August for the 29th. I was scheduled for the 29th, no problem. They called me a week before to cancel the appointment and scheduled me for Sept 2. I said I can't do that because I leave on vacation the 29th and won't be back till the 14th. Which she said is fine because the person who be on vacation for 10 days anyways. So I called to reschedule for the 14th when I get back, there was nothing because she only works Thursday-Saturday. But she has no availability the 14-17! Every time I call, the girl seems frustrated with me because of their lack of appts. Extremely disappointed by the way I was treated. I had an appointment on the 7th of July, 2018 and My appointment was made with Amanda who came highly recommended . Amanda was 30 minutes late. I was then taken back by another stylist to work on my hair she was already busy with other clients and still tried to assist me but then Amanda walks in and apologizes for being late... the crazy part was the receptionist told me she was working on a client and is running behind, however she wasn't there. I felt as though I was rushed and the color turned out horrible, I was so disappointed, at the end I told Amanda I didn't like how bright red it was and she advised that it'll tone down. Two days later I called the salon( since they're closed on Sundays) and explained how unhappy I was with the color and I was advised to come back and see Amanda. Again, she throws me off to another stylist named Hannah because she said the color that was in there was too hard to take out.. I explained I disliked the color red and prefer the brown colors.. she takes me to the sink and applied a dark color all over... darker than my natural and she said to give it 10 minutes .. then she came back and said you just need 5 more minutes, she went on to assist other customers.. I sat there for over 30 minutes.. she then brings Hannah to me and says "she's going to do your hair and finish you up I'm out!" And leaves for the day. Never once have I ever had to see three hairdressers to get my hair done. I was mistreated and tossed around like a bother ... I'm a paying customer and there should be no reason I'm thrown from stylist to stylist.. As I looked around me everyone had one stylist from beginning to end and I sat there waiting to see who'll help me. All I wanted was a few highlights. it was my first time here but obviously they have a preference of customers, white women with blonde hair seems to be their specialty. I will NEVER go back to this salon. The color red is still in my hair and I now have get it re done. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

I went to the John James Salon today which is located in the former Aveda location behind Nautilus Diner. Check in was quick and an offer of coffee, tea or water was made. I sat and waited for my stylist and enjoyed the comfortable feeling of the front area. Ericka was my stylist and we went to her station to discuss what I wanted to do with my hair. I love my hair color and cut as do my daughters who are very opinionated about how it looks. Jessica gave me a very wonderful massage while the conditioner was 'working'. So I decided to give John James a try, and I'm very glad I did. This salon made getting ready for prom so relaxing and stress free. From getting my spray tan to getting my hair and make up done each employee of John James was very accommodating and kind. I enjoyed my first experience at John James so much that I came back later in the month to get ready for my second prom. I had the same people do my hair and make up both times. I also had a not-so-great experience with my groupon-purchased massage. It took me weeks to book and on the day of my appointment I arrived early. My massuse showed up at the salon 15 minutes late, rushing me through the greeting process. She did not apologize for her lateness or mention it. I bought the 60 minute massage and was surprised that after 45 minutes she had finished up, again making no comment. The massuse's skills were fine- it was just her customer sevice was awful. The facilities are so-so. The salon part seems fine- the entrance decor is cute and the waiting area is serviceable, but I agree with other reviewers that the massage rooms are simply service closets converted into massage rooms. I had the room in the back that had sharp, over-head lighting that even when it dimmed seemed too bright for a client who is facing the ceiling. read more

I went to Kim for a Deva cut. First, she ran 30 minutes late with no apology. Their website says she's "certified" in a Deva cut. I have been getting Deva cuts for years and the way she cut my hair was not the way a Deva Inspired Stylist should be cutting hair. I was not a believer. She washed my hair and did not style it with curling it at all, just put the clips in to heighten. I sat under the dryer and went back to Kim to review. I said the front looked longer on one side than the other. She began to pull a chunk from the left and a chunk from the right, pull it straight. Curly hair fail. That is not going to show you anything! I put my hair back in a band once I got in the car because it just wasn't styled. I washed my hair the next morning and looked in the mirror. There were no layers, uneven and just awful. I contacted DevaCurl and asked them to look her up. They told me that she has not been trained by DevaCurl; she was not listed. They then gave me the names of folks in the area who were. I'm only giving two stars because the owner said I could come back to get it fixed and also gave me a free pedicure. I had a reaction to the glue and when I asked them to take them off they tried to talk me out of it even though my eyes were very irritated. I saw a Groupon for lashes at John James with Elizabeth and read the reviews on Groupon and I decided to take the plunge. I am very happy with my decision. Elizabeth is fantastic. She does such a great job. They always look fantastic and I always get compliments. I have now been going for months and will as long as she's there. Her products are much better than the other place I had gone and I get no irritation from the lashes or glue she uses. She is a perfectionist and it shows in her work. I received a groupon for this salon for a massage and a mani/pedi. My biggest complaint in not the service I received. The two women that worked with me were great! The problem is the massage room is located in the front right next to the reception desk. So my massage was colored with the phone ringing, the stylist laughing, the hair dryer, the owner making appointments, and so on and so forth. It was by far the loudest massage I have ever had. Well, they never called. I called them and by that time, they were booked out 3 months. They said I can split my mani/pedi and massage appointments and get me in earlier. I did that and scheduled the massage for April 15th, which was still pretty far out. My friend and I showed up for our appointment (she lives 45 minutes away) and they didn't have us in the book. Their idea of smoothing things over was to give us a 30% off coupon and promised to call the following day to schedule. They never called, so I called back a couple of weeks later. Debbie said "I see you wanted to come in on the 11th or 12th... Was that May or June?". I told her that was for mani/pedi in APRIL. I arrived to my appointment on time at 6pm today and the massage therapist, Ronald, never showed. The receptionist sent him a text message notifying him of two appointments he had today, one of which was my friend that lives 45 minutes away. I waited until 6:45 and the nail technician was still busy with another customer. Don't waste your time here, this place is a joke. read more
