Don't really leave reviews too often but I feel obligated as every time I've been here it's been after midnight yet they've delivered tasty, fulfilling food at a quality price point. As another reviewer mentioned, Johnnie's epitomizes the definition of a greasy spoon establishment in terms of menu and ambiance, for there's something so comforting about the neon lights, formica countertops, and great food to boot. I tend to regularly order the Denver Omelet or Hobo Skillet, although I'd more or less trust anything on the menu in the realm of classic diner food. Perhaps not the place for a steak, but if that's what you expect to be blown away on at a diner, you're searching in the wrong place. Oh yeah--super friendly staff, too. Always cordial, always attentive, and always witty, facetious, and fun. The short order cook has no idea how to properly prepare a Denver omelet when I visited there on January 23rd. I've been driving by for nearly a year now and finally stopped for breakfast on my way to work. The breakfast menu has anything and everything you want. The grill is right behind the counter so you can see it made (or grab a table if you prefer not to). My eggs and hashbrowns came up quick and done to perfection. Seriously, perhaps the best burger in Chicagoland. Johnnie's has a special burger on the menu called the "big boy", 1/2 pound of ground sirloin. I asked for it to be converted to "patty melt" style on rye with cheese & grilled onions, and it is completely a killer!! I was hoping to like this joint. Didn't do it for me. I walk in and take a seat at the counter looking around and noticing a couple of people in the house. The brunette woman who took my order was not nice to me. Don't have to bend over backwards but at least be courteous. She takes my order then tells the cook it's "to go." She didn't ask me if I was dining in or taking out. Guess she thought the decision was up to her. I did want to dine in, but decided not to correct her and just take the food back home. She walks by and sets down my milkshake in front of me without breaking her stride. I thank her and without even stopping or looking my way she just makes the "uh huh" sound. Then a blond woman rung me up and she was very nice. The kind of person that smiles at everyone. They don't take plastic so I paid in cash. Came out to 10 bucks and change. I got 2 scrambled eggs, 2 pancakes, 3 bacon strips and a banana milkshake. The milkshake was the worst I've ever had. Overly sweet and artificial tasting. First of all I ordered Lima Bean soup but was given ham & bean. I asked for water and while server wrote it on check I never received it and if I choked I could have sued. Next my plate finally arrived with hashbrowns which I did not ask for. Then when it was time to pay to make a shitty experience worse I was over charged. I was told 13.25. My chopped steak dinner was on menu for $9.25. So the waitress clearly cant add.
