We had the absolute pleasure of having Bessie take care of us. When I tell you this woman sparkles! I'd give this place 5 stars for Bessie alone. She is an absolute sweetheart. Gave us some great recommendations for drinks, and kept us laughing all night. Food was phenomenal. Started off with the saganaki and the shrimp dejonge appetizers. What is about saganaki that turns a normal dinner into an event? Both apps were yummy. My prime rib was perfectly cooked. The added touch of au jus on the meat was perfection. My husband had the medallions Oscar. So amazing. Definitely in the top 5 dinners I've ever had. We didn't save room for dessert, but this just means we'll have to go back. Came with my parents who had last visited in the 80s. It's a beautiful restaurant setup with a separate room for parties and a separate bar. Once your eyes adjust to the dim light, it's a very comfortable, intimate setting. We all got the prime rib (delish) and tried the baked potato soup (best we've had) and Shrimp DeJonghe, a Chicago staple. The prices are high but well worth it. But the belle of the ball: our server, Bessie. She's worked here for over 40 years and is so suited for the job. She is personable, funny, and makes you feel like family. It's been since 2002 since I've been to Tom's steakhouse and that was the time my brother was moving to California it was his birthday in November 18th 2002. My parents myself and just him alone went to attend Tom's steakhouse during that time I thought it was bougie. Well moving after 20 years if not more I decided to treat myself alone or go solo to this steak house. I could have gone to like Texas longhorn or Texas Roadhouse but this has that nice 1970s feel for the ambience. service was pretty attentive. The waitress suggested the split being ham soup for that day on a Tuesday but I went for the salad and I'm glad I went for the salad because the salad dressings tastes very fresh as well as the salads themselves they make your salad dressings in house or from scratch. The complimentary bread with the butter was also very flavorful and warm. Of course I went for the king prime rib I was going to go for the bigger one but it's just too much for me I don't have the appetite like I used to have this would probably be good for a 30 or early 40 year old to have a an appetite and is bougie despite being an old establishment in Melrose Park. In regards to the king prime rib it was cooked okay. I ordered it medium rare next time I'll order it medium well wildfire steakhouse served this one time this kind of cut and I forgot all about this it was better than wildfire steakhouse in Hoffman estates and that's a franchise versus Earth small older Greek established with that serve steaks. Despite that I had a baked potato I ordered two other a la carte sites which was the mushroom sauteed as well as the grilled sauteed onions it was very delicious . As for dessert I decided to go on a limb and try this Brandy ice cream it was a man okay it was basically been a ice cream saturated with Brandy in it they give you a big portion of ice cream. I probably should have gone with the peppermint ice cream they had and I don't really care for cheesecake. Other than that it was it was a restaurant that I haven't tried and it's kind of like a bucket list thing this might be more than 20 years. Tom's Steak House, located in Chicago's West Suburban city, Melrose Park, has been in the neighborhood since 1952. They're known for the steaks and seafood.  Although it's in Melrose Park, it has the classic Chicago steak house vibe. Today was my first time visiting amongst friends. The entry and dining space is very welcoming. By the way, if you are looking to plan a private event, there is a really large event space at the main entry. We started the gathering with drinks, Saganaki that's lighted table-side, and the most amazing soup of the day which was Chicken and Rice. I could have dined on both of those all day! From my understanding, all the meats and seafood are charbroiled. As I had a lot of red meat and seafood earlier in the week, I decided to taste the bbq ribs. Anywhere I go, I do my best to get the ribs without the sauce, so that I can taste the flavor behind it. These were baby back and it seemed like there was a lot of black pepper, salt and garlic powder - nothing additional like brown sugar, cajun seasoning, or chili powder. In this case the bbq sauce was definitely helpful. It was very tangy and delicious. Now that I've tried it, the next time I visit and get the ribs again, I'll taste it while the sauce is baked on. A few of my friends dined on Tom's Steak House burger and prime rib. They all had good things to say. No complaints. I was too full to eat dessert at the restaurant, but I brought home a slice of the carrot cake. Wow, that was super amazing. It was a very decent portion, but I could have easily and greedily eaten two slices! I would give Tom's Steak House 4 out of 5 stars. I would like to see a few more cuts of beef and seafood in the entree selection. Tom's has ample parking and accepts online reservations. read more

We were celebrating our anniversary at this restaurant, by the way! We don't recommend it at all! The meat was apparently cooked to perfection, however, it tasted horrible, reminiscent of a dirty grill with overcooked food that hadn't been cleaned for a week. When we complained to the manager, the response was very poor and unprofessional! The meat tastes that way because it was cooked on charcoal instead of gas! His simple response was "sorry!" He didn't offer a discount, or even say he would check the grill to make sure it was really clean. The other thing was the presentation of the meat... bathed in what they call meat juice... nothing more than an overcooked and burnt broth that represents contaminated Lake Michigan in the 40s. Family has been going here for years. We had the chopped tenderloin with au jus for lunch and we liked it. Another had the Tom burger and the Greek salad with chicken and they also liked those dishes. The side salads were cold and crisp and we got the carousel dressing. It also comes with rolls, breadsticks and butter, and ice water. Private parking lot and handicap accessible. The bathroom handicap stall has a low toilet and a wheelchair may not fit inside it. We decided to go here for my husband's birthday. The staff is super friendly and they are very attentive. Our food came out quickly. There is a lot of dining from the bar area to the more formal seating where it was quiet. The decor was dated, which I enjoyed because they are staying true to their roots. The ambience was calm and I enjoyed some of my favorite oldies they had playing in the background. We ordered the king filet and the full slab of ribs. Both entrées came with soup or salad and a baked potato. My husband's steak came out on a hot charcoal silver plate and was fantastic. The au jus with it was quite tasty. The steak was cooked perfectly. The baked potato came with a cheese and chive spread which was excellent. They give you 3 homemade salad dressings which were the following: garlic, French and Russian. My husband's favorite was the French and mine the Russian. The Russian dressing was comparable to 1000 Island dressing. My ribs were just okay. They weren't fall off the bone and tough. I did like the sauce but it was drenched in it. Less sauce would've been better. They brought out a mini cake for my husband and it was okay. Obviously previously frozen and a little dry. Too much icing as well. Also, I didn't know until it came time for the check that they charged me $11 for this cake. I feel like they should tell you that upfront. I honestly wouldn't pay $11 for that cake. That was disappointing and honestly shocking. Overall, our experience was good. My advice to the servers and owners is to be upfront and honest about putting the birthday dessert cost on the customer because that was a little shady in my opinion by not telling us until check time. We went to Tom's tonight probably for the 1000 time. The food is better than ever and the service was excellent from Dawn. We had the Shrimp De Joghne appetizer which was excellent. The soup of the day was Cream of Chicken Rice it was very flavorful and piping hot. Tom's House Salad with the Carousel of Homemade Dressings is always a hit. For dinner I had the Athenian Skirt Steak for the 2nd time it was cooked to perfection and tasted even better My companion had the Queen Filet with a Enhancement of Bleu Cheese and Black Pepper corns which was cooked to perfection. Both of our Steaks were cooked perfectly as per our choice which our server made sure or about 2 minutes after we received our dinner. This place has a history. It MEANS something to the wee ones from long ago (the 1970's) that now take their own grandkids here. Generational dining. The originals are being killed off. My wife demanded the dining room. Ugh. Dining right out of Americana 1950's. Like one of the segments out of Disneys "Carousel of Progress." Our waitress was fine, I guess. Competent but not friendly. I tried to kibitz but she was of the "c'mon c'mon hurry it along" variety. The place wasn't busy. Not a Linz fine steak but an oldschool steak. There IS a difference. Tom's steaks are tougher, and chewier, than a Gibson's, or other higher end places. I raised black angus cattle. I sometimes prefer this type of steak . It takes me back to a time in my life when my family had steaks like this. There have been many changes in the meat industry in the last 30 years. Changes that have brought us steaks that are far different nowadays . Example: Wagyu beef is like meat you could almost drink with a straw. Too mushy for me. Tom's steaks involve chewing. Most Americans under 40 have never had a grass-fed steak. (Dont get TV anchorman Bill Curtis going on this! It is his obsession.) We now feed our cattle corn for a long time. Maybe too long. We did on our farm. And it ups the sugar content and makes the meat tender and delicious. Steaks have never been better tasting than they are right now. American steaks (not Japan or Australia) really are superior. You'd rather eat your shoe, Charlie Chaplin style, than gnaw on a Tuscan Steak in Italy. They are rough going. Back to Tom's- This place is the real deal. Unchanged since 1952 but not unwashed. Way before my time. (And that usually means "decrepit" these days.Not so here.) This place? Clean. It feels like a movie set. OLD but not antique. Nice work on the upkeep folks. It FEELS like you are walking into this place in it's era. I dig it kid! And that's worth something. And they ARE ca$hing in on the nostalgia factor. The prices SEEM high. You do get a potato (w/ fixins) and a choice of soup or salad w/ your steak. Thats nice!Thats something thats disappearing from menus right? Everything is a la carte nowadays. So this is a plus! I asked for "Ranch Dressing please." The brusque response? "No ranch dressing." "Her terse charmless response was very unpleasant" we all thought. Heres an idea: offer an alternative. Or or or better yet? Get Ranch Dressing from Sysco. Just throwing out an idea here! Green Goddess ain't the world's most popular salad dressing any more. Ranch was invented in the 1950's right around the exact same time that Tom's actually opened. Did you know that in 1992 it beat out Italian to become the most popular dressing in the western world.This isn't a fad. The vast majority of your customers want Ranch. Don't change Tom's .. ok ok maybe change a few things. Get some help that have some passion for serving (I believe its an art form) and add Ranch dressing. Ahh, and another thing! No creamed spinach Tom's?!? What the ?!? At a steakhouse in Chicago? Are you batty? Lots of Greek stuff however. Saganaki the flaming cheese- that you have but not creamed spinach? Cheese on fire? Thats great! Greeks have a long proud history of running great resturants in our town. But you cant be a real steakhouse w/out creamed spinach. Its steakhouse blasphemy!
