Clean, quick, and delicious--what more could you ask for from a sub shop? This place came highly recommended by a friend, and it certainly lives up to the hype. Be sure to order the sandwiches with everything as they come. I usually skip the onions, but I'm glad I didn't here. My hoagie was perfect, with chewy bread, thinly sliced meat, and just the right amount of condiments, making every bite a delight. The interior is clean and has plenty of seating, though I didn't notice a bathroom, so keep that in mind. read more

Great little no-frills sub shop in Forest Park. Broad menu selection of different sandwiches, which are all delicious, including ham on pita, chicken sandwiches, and burgers. Get the BG fries - they're full of butter, garlic, and paprika, and absolutely amazing. Staff is always very fast and very friendly. Whenever I visit Pioneer Tap, my friends & I ALWAYS eat at Submarine Tender. Food and service is ALWAYS 10/10. However, today was the Worst experience. The Manager of this restaurant was Extremely & Bluntly rude, along with a disrespectful tone. I order the same thing, #4 which is a Gyro special. After receiving my food, I noticed I didn't have fries, I went back to the counter to inquire about my missing fries. He stated "I asked you if you wanted fries you said no" I proceeded to say I don't recall you asking me that. Then his tone got increasing louder. I then asked for a refund, he then said "we don't give refunds do you want to order fries" As I'm attempting to pull up my online wallet to just pay for the fries, he says "Just admit you made a mistake" I explained that I'm Never to proud to admit when I've made a mistake. He then replies " maybe I didn't say it loud enough" I then asked for a corporate number. His response was "even if you call corporate it's going to come back to me" I explained that I also was written a negative review, he responded "you're 1 person of the many good reviews" "I giving you the fries and you're still going to write a negative review" "I see you just can't do anything nice for people" I was given the fries, went to sit down with my coworkers and he still was making rude and sarcastic remarks. I work in the area and was craving a sandwich for lunch. I came across this place here on Yelp, and saw good reviews, so I figured why not try it? I got the club sandwich in the medium size (it had a different name but I can't remember). Sandwich was great, but definitely was a lot of oil on it, so maybe I'd ask for light oil next time. I waited no more than 5 minutes for my sandwich so that was good. Ambiance is not great.. definitely not updated or decorated in an aesthetically pleasing way, but that doesn't bother me as long as the food is good and it is clean. Ordered a roast beef and turkey sub (mid, a bit much on the mayo) a Pepsi (best part of the meal) and Butter Garlic Fries (butter smelt way overcooked, wasn't sure if that was how it normally smelt) and I'm hoping it won't make me sick. The way it came out makes me believe people don't order garlic butter fries there often. Service was decent, front clerk was friendly. Came in for some late night subs after a festival visiting Chicago. This place was right next to our Airbnb. I had the pastrami sub with everything, and they gave us some free fries while we waited. Everything was amazing and very fresh. The food came out very fast as well. read more

I came across this sub shop for the first time when driving in that area. The old school sign caught my attention and saw it was founded in 1985. I thought what better than a sub from a place solid enough to be open 40 years. And boy was I right! Super fresh ingredients, the perfect ratio of everything (I had the Depth Charge with everything plus mustard), and their bread is absolutely delicious! Everyone in there was friendly and helpful with me trying to decide on what to order. I wish there were more mom & pop sub shops like this everywhere so folks would STOP ordering from places like Jimmy John's, for example (if only everyone who orders from there would realize they're also supporting a disgusting man who grins ear to ear poaching endangers animals and throwing millions of dollars at Trump...) SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES and enjoy the taste of a REAL sub sandwich like this place makes! I'll definitely be back soon even though they're a bit of a hike from where I live. When I need a cold cut and fries, this is my go to place. I don't know what they do to those fries, but they are great!

The sandwich was 99% spongy bread with minimal meat. The shredded lettuce was very similar to when Jimmy Johns had that big E Coli outbreak. I would have given this 5 stars if I was blackout drunk. Will be back again. read more

AMAZING FOOD! I've been coming here for over 20 years and they are still some of the best food in Chicago. Everyone I've brought has become regulars. People ask me where I got those BG fries, they need to get some of their own. I gave one less star because, even though they have remained solid on the food and prices, they need to consider ditching the styrofoam cups for drinks. But I get it, inflation is already killing us all and it's hard to remain a small business with fair prices. read more

I find that most restaurants that are on the way back from my work commute going home get good reviews. From a perusal of many reviews, they are from locals who are sentimental/nostalgic about this as a local "hole in the wall" type of "greasy spoon" restaurant that is open late but has decent food. Kind of like Gene and Jude's in River Grove (though this restaurant gets a lot better reviews). The Alpine restaurant also is top notch for subs. Though I am relatively close to this area, I only found this place due to my research (see above), so I don't have any of this nostalgia. Still, the reviews of this place were decent, so I decided to try them. At this point, about half a year after I found them, I have already tried them three times. Yes, I agree with most people that Butter Garlic fries are one of the best things on their menu. That said, that isn't saying much. The fries are heavily seasoned, and the seasoning is delicious, but otherwise, the fries are super greasy and just standard thin fries, nothing to write home about. Of course, I am aware that if you visit this place after 12 AM and are in a certain state of body/mind, I am sure this place would be much more delicious, and you might be much more thankful and joyful. You would think that with their name the submarines would be the best thing on the menu. You would be surprised though because again the submarines are sub-standard. The one exception is the bread which usually seems fresh, tasty, and crisp. However, aside from the bread it was some tired and stringy sub-standard cuts of lettuce, tomatoes the same, and cold cuts of meat. A bit of condiments for some taste round out this lackluster affair. If you are in the area and got nowhere else to eat sure give this place a try. If you are dr*nk off your a** sure you got nowhere else and you won't have the capacity to care or check reviews so go ahead. read more

I'm not ashamed to admit this - I love Submarine Tender. I recently moved to the area and decided to drop in because I needed a good sandwich. Well, it turns out this place has a ton of good options. The subs are excellent, big and cheap. Really cheap for Chicago. Add onto that the other offerings - the gyros, the chicken sandwiches, etc. You really can't go wrong here. Everything is so good (the kids especially love the gyro meat). Seriously, everything here is good and fast. Unless you are seriously hungry, just get the regular size. I made the mistake of getting the large turkey sub and I ended up with 3 meals worth. Which, well, is not necessarily a bad thing if you're expecting it. This is one of my two regular sandwich places in the area, for sure. Love these guys!! read more

I haven't been here in years. I remember back in the day the ham and cheese subs were so good. The other night I wanted something good to eat. So, I decide to drive down and pick me up a ham & cheese sub with fries. Still looks the same inside and very clean. I was gladly greeted by staff. The prices are still affordable. Nice food menu selection to choose cold/hot meals.. Quick service. My sub and fries were fresh and delicious. No wonder they are still in business after all these years. I called ahead to order a sub. The lady who answered to phone put me on hold. It took me 12minutes to drive to the restaurant, while I was still on hold. When arrived I asked the lady if her phone was working and her reply was, "I have someone on hold." I rolled my eyes and went to look at the menu. All of a sudden, she yelled at me "I WAS BUSY!
