A fun local market downtown. The deli here sells an array of comfort foods that's sure to satisfy your inner cravings. Also a great selection of cakes and cookies to complete your lunch/dinner. Staff was very friendly. Was looking for some local Tucson gifts and there were some items but wished there was a bit more selection of local goods to choose from. During the pandemic I bought a gift card and I decided to finally use it. I was very surprised how small the store is, it packs a lot of stuff into it. The isles are incredibly narrow, I am of average weight and I maybe had a half a foot on each side in the aisle. The produce didn't seem very fresh, so I skipped over that. I did enjoy some of the weirder, nontraditional grocery store items like squid jerky. However, I am vegan and I struggle to find vegan items within all of the options. If you think snow, parking is very tricky. Unless you live downtown and you plan on walking, be prepared to do a little bit of walking in order to get to the store. The store also had alcohol, and toiletries. What the store is known for is their deli, which I did not partake in. I hear their sandwiches are amazing but I didn't see any vegan options. read more

Alright working downtown and had to grab a quick lunch. Found this place and what a gem. Lots of choices in the deli case and some seriously good sandwich and burger choices. This was a super tasty burger enjoyed on the street (because I had to). Bacon egg cheese and of course the burger. All made this fabulous. Truly a juicy run down your hand style. Only kind of burger to have. The fries were perfectly crispy, difficult to do with sweet potato fries. PRO: Nice deli options! CONS: Extremely overpriced on every single item!! Even for a local (non-corporate) store, the prices are off the chart!!! MISSED: It is a shame that Johnny Gibson's has NOT reopened the outdoor and/or upstairs seating!!!!! It is needed when downtown and you want something from the deli as a quick + healthy choice. SERVICE: Other than the main manager, no other employee cares that you are in-store. AMBIANCE: Originally, probably nice and something (theme-based) different for downtown. However, it is too crowded in today's time. Two separate customers cannot even cross paths between the stainless steel, rack shelves. CONFUSED: Per Johnny Gibson's own website dated 2022, they reference opening an "event center" in the back. It is now Aug. 2024; nothing in the courtyard to my knowledge. read more

I am reviewing solely on the basis of lunch takeout, not as a grocery. Two of us stopped in today, I had the Wildcat sandwich which was turkey on multigrain. It was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. Lots of avocado, sprouts, fresh tomato heaped on top of the meat. Everything was fresh and delicious. My companion had the salad bar. Nice selection of fresh veggies, but also had a number of protein choices: chicken, tuna salad, etc. He has the salad bar a couple of times per week and loves it. Friendly people, whether behind the deli counter or at the checkout. Pleasant ambiance, very clean inside. The only downside is they don't have a huge menu. That said, they have hot and cold sandwiches. I want to try the hot eggplant parm sandwich some time. Wont find that at Subway. I'll be back. read more

Two days ago Drug Enforcement Agents and members of the Tucson Police Department were conducting a drug investigation on an outbound Am Trak Train, traveling from California to Louisiana, stopping in Tucson. Two subjects on the train were suspected of carrying a large amount of drugs. As Agents and officers entered the train one of the suspects attempted to hide the drugs. Several minutes later one of the suspects pulled a gun and began firing. One DEA Agent was killed, a second shot, along with two Tucson Police Officers. One suspect was killed and the other arrested. This was a horrific and tragic scene for the law enforcement community in Tucson. A massive crime scene was established and officers went to Market and obtained a large amount of water, beverages and food items for the investigating detectives and officers securing the scene. The police Union asked if the employees could keep a tab and that they would return the next day to settle the debt. Today, the union representative returned to settle the tab and the owners refused to accept the money. They extended their sympathy to the fallen officers and their families and all law enforcement officers. Job well done! Thank You! read more

My first time ordering today. I got the hot Green Chile Chicken sandwich and it was very disappointing. It was more bread than meat. The other half was less chicken than this. The chicken was definitely frozen. And because of that I honestly couldn't eat this half because it was so difficult to bite through Saving grace was flavors were good and the sweet potato fries were pleasant as well. It's unfortunate the meat was practically inedible and so little amount of it. The place seems really nice but I would encourage everybody to not buy this sandwich. read more

I'll admit that sometimes I like the idea of Johnny Gibson's (JG) more than the actual JG. Having a market, deli, and made-to-order food/sandwiches in downtown Tucson is a real plus. The presence of JG brings with it a sense of urban authenticity that only a small market and deli can provide. In this manner, as a melting pot of downtown essentials, JG has filled the void necessary for downtown living to be viable. Now, truth be told, if you're a person who does a lot of cooking, you're going to need to supplement your shopping at a larger grocery store. The same goes for purchasing "essentials" because the selection at JG's, due to their small-ish size, can be quite limited. That said, they also have a unique assortment of items that you don't typically find at a larger chain. You will find local and artisan gems tucked away in corners and interspersed on the shelves betwixt your favorite national brands and old favorites. The real "gem" of JG's for me is their prepared foods and their salad bar. They make food to order, like sandwiches and fries, and they also have already made food that they'll warm up for you or package up (sold by weight) for you to finish preparing at home. They have freshly baked goods--cookies and cakes--ready to take home or add to your meal. Some of their deli salads are amazing, especially their broccoli salad (this was once vegetarian and is no longer). The food quality is pretty high -- they use Boars Head meats, the veggies seem fresh, and the cooked meats are usually tender (though, the salad bar could use more frequent refreshing, especially during slower times of the day -- the hummus and egg salad sometimes look a bit crusty). I don't think I've had anything at JG's that I didn't think was at least tasty. And I really enjoy their coffee! They have some of their own brews as well as Arbuckle's coffee. Both are very bold and taste great. There is both indoor and outdoor seating if you need to rest before or after your downtown adventures--and this is where stars are lost-- the cleanliness of the inside loft seating is sometimes questionable. Still, nothing beats chowing down with a bird's eye view of the market and it's melange of patrons meandering the shelves or ordering up a sandwich to go. They also have an outdoor patio that they share with Highwire Lounge and Independent Distillery that is cozy and nicely landscaped. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not, but you'll often find Downtown Tucson security patrolling JG's. Does this mean there's more shenanigans there compared to other locations? Or does JG just want to be safer in general? I'll say that we've been there on more than one occasion when security was looking for someone who had just stolen an item, or when management was kicking someone out for something or other. It hasn't been a disruption to us and we don't feel unsafe there, but this is also something we don't experience normally anywhere else. Take it as you may. I should also speak about the employees. Some of them are...not that friendly. They give off a "cold" feel that I think doesn't fit in with a downtown market. To be fair, some are awesome and banter with the regulars, but not all. I truly think JG's management needs to work on this, because JG is a real asset to downtown Tucson and a few tweaks could make the place amazing. We will absolutely be back! read more

Johnny's is everything that all the reviews say it to be. I find it to be a cross between Rincon Market, World Market, and Sprouts in a smaller version. It is a gem for downtown needs. They have a wonderful meat department, extensive salad bar, a soup bar, a deli, a bakery with delectable items, coffee bar, draft beer, fresh fruits and vegetables, office & school supplies, and all other regular items groceries. They have many items that are novelty items, specialty items, and gourmet items. They carry organic items and GMO free items as well. They have plenty of frozen items which includes ice cream and ice cream treats. I find their prices to be reasonable and not too outlandish for a downtown market. I found their vegetables and fruits to be fresh and not beat up for not being sold for a while. There are two areas where you can enjoy your drinks or food: an inside area with tables and an outdoor area, which I think is pretty neat. They are open until midnight! Great for you late-night downtowners. And to clinch it off, they play jazz through their speakers! read more

A very eclectic and trendy, yet practical market that also boasts a coffee bar, grill, many beer selections, salad /soup bar. This market meets the needs of the downtown area by both providing grocery necessities and lunches for day workers. In the evening it is also a nice place to get some craft beer or coffee and really decent desserts from the bakery. I primarily use the market during the day for the quick grill food, by quick I mean some items take a few minutes and others take about 15 minutes. If you select a deli item to warm up it will be quick. If you select a burger and fries you will be standing for a bit. I sometimes get a salad by the pound at the salad bar. There is seating in the store but I prefer the seating in the back of the store outside under a patio where there is a TV usually with sports. The restrooms are past the outdoor area and are basically all gender stalls that meet in a common sink area. usually clean in the lunch time, usually a mess at night. It is shared by another business. A cool place to visit... Like I said hit the bakery for the desserts baklava and tarts and cheese cakes and BROWNIES!! read more

This is a work in progress, still some kinks to work out as far as the point of sale and timing, and also some placement of condiments, ice, napkins, etc. What it does have is friendly helpful staff, a lot of grocery items I love like, pickled okra, and baby beets. I have gotten 2 sandwiches there, and they have been fresh and the best of quality, the fries are a little funk frozen. I like the patio and it's connection to the other businesses, it is not set up to it's full potential, but the potential is there. When this store first opened, I introduced myself to the owner as a transgender woman. To this day, he and his staff misgender me. I got called "sir" by one of the deli workers last night. I was also assured that there would be plenty of generic branded foods stocked, but that has not happened and everything is priced at least 25% than all the chain supermarkets. Many of the trays of deli foods sit for days. The same tray of sweet and sour chicken has been sitting in the case for the past three days. The order of Teriyaki Chicken and Brown Rice I had tonight was not made today. If you're a person of privilege, this is an excellent store. If you care about the lower income people who have been displaced by gentrification and those who still live downtown in subsidized housing , you'll boycott this store. read more

Really bummed. Went in on a whim to grab some food since it's so close to my apartment and I didn't feel like cooking. I've come here before for a quick grocery stop but I had never gotten anything fresh from their kitchen. Ordered a mushroom Swiss, take it home, and there's a hair in it. Now, normally I'd give the benefit of the doubt asI have long blonde hair that can be a bit unruly but this hair strand in particular was thick, black, and curly. Please wear hairnets in your kitchen y'all. $11.50 is way too much to charge for something that ended up in the trash. read more

This is a nice place to stop in for a quick bite, a few necessities, or a fun snack. They have quick a large deli with hot and cold sandwiches, prepared meals, and meats (just a a regular deli would). The prices are on the upper side of fair for their food, but you get a good amount and it tastes good too! It seems as though they try to be as health conscious and locally sourced as possible from looking at what the store has to offer in terms of stocking. They also hire quite a few college kids, so this is a fun young atmosphere as well. They have seating both upstairs and in the back for you to enjoy your drink or meal. The seating in the back shares a courtyard-ish feeling with a couple of bars, and that's where the bathrooms are too (Also shared.) If the bars aren't open, you'll need a code to use the bathrooms. Note - there can be some riff-raff that wander through here. read more

A nice and much needed addition to Tucson's downtown. They've done an excellent job of incorporating lots of variety, especially given their space constraints. One corner dedicated to fresh produce (all of which looks quite fresh), aisles with canned/dry goods, deli and meat/fish counter, coffee bar, beer taps, and baked goods/desserts. They carry a decent selection of beer and wine, and there is both indoor and outdoor seating for those who wish to have their snack or meal there. The staff are also friendly. My only complaint is the cleanliness. I know it probably gets busy here at times, but each time I've come in, it seems the tables and counter seating are dirty. Today wasn't particularly busy, but every table inside had either garbage, crumbs, or sticky liquid on it. Not so bad as to prevent me from coming back... But stepping it up on the tidiness would earn this place 5 stars. A great little market to add to Tucson's evolving downtown. read more

We got married in January and Johnny Gibson's catered for our big day. Overall the food was delicious, they were good sized servings, and it came out warm. We had many compliments from our guest about the food options: stuffed chicken with pesto and a tri tip, both were served with broccoli and scalloped potatoes. The only downside we had was not everyone got rolls served to them. Our dinner started almost an hour early, which set off the timing for most tings. We did enjoy the food very much! This is exactly what downtown Tucson needed. A grocery store that offers local and non local foods, pastries, meat, fish, and a bar. They have everything from Poptarts to salmon. The produce looks fresh, the only thing they don't have yet is the meat market. The salad/breakfast bar looks versatile and fresh. The deli section has all the classic sandwiches and I can't wait to try one. There is a patio outback for people to drink their beers, for which you can either get on tap or buy from their alcohol section, so they are pretty diverse. They don't take amex yet. read more

The place has strengths and weaknesses. I'm only going to list the strengths, then will briefly touch on the weaknesses below. The place is very well-designed, beautiful and it fits nicely in the somewhat "new" downtown Tucson. You should think of it as a grocer-lite: it isn't a place to shop at for all your groceries, but it's larger than a traditional deli, so it's a great spot for picking up essentials on the way home but not for your weekly shopping trip. They have a very nice wine selection and lots of great coffee! The weaknesses outweigh the strengths in my opinion, but I'd rather not list those here as this is a small locally-owned business. But you can most certainly find the problems I'm avoiding discussing in my post explicitly mentioned by other yelpers on this page. One weakness that SHOULD be known is that they shelve a lot of already expired food in their store. I've gotten home and realized that the hot sauce I bought had an expiration date two months prior to the date I bought it; I've gotten home and realized that the almond milk I bought had already expired. I won't be giving my business to them any longer, which is a shame, since I've given them a lot in the past. And some of the people who work there really are quite friendly. For a full grocery store downtown, the food co-op is your best best. Gibson's is great if you realize you forgot an ingredient or two once you get home and need to run to the nearest market to make a meal! read more

Horrible, horrible place. I watched four employees literally chase a homeless-looking person down the street for walking out of the store without paying for a beverage. They chased this person intently, as though they intended to harm them, all over one drink. When the employees returned after chasing them down the street, multiple employees began mocking the person (who was transgender) loudly. They said such things as "that's a dude dressed up as an ugly chick" and laughing. While all this is going on, about 1/2 of the staff members present were not wearing masks. A sign on the door says all customers must wear masks to enter - yet half of the staff (including a woman who acted as though she was a manager or owner) were not wearing masks. The previous time I was there I saw an employee kick out a homeless person and tell him "get the f*** out of here." I thought maybe he was having a bad day. Now I am under the impression that this is just the way they conduct business - by shaming, mocking, and humiliating people who are less fortunate or different. It's a shame that a place like this exists in the heart of our downtown community. read more

This is an Awesome Eclectic market in the heart of Downtown Tucson that has an awesome selection of grocery items and alcohol and stays open late. The Downtown Tucson area, which includes 6th Ave, 3-blocks south of Broadway, is evolving into an exciting neighborhood with new condos and apartments being built every day and with this being the only market serving the Downtown Tucson, within 4 miles. This review is LONG overdue... After 10 months at the tute down the street this was a go to for those late school nights that ended at 10pm. It didn't matter what was going on we knew we could always rely on Johnny's for the best fries, buffalo sauce and a nice cold coke!! Their burgers and wiches are to die for!! They have a really good green Chile enchilada bake, their corn dogs and tots are SO good!! They have a huge selection of goodies from candies to chips, fresh produce, cheese, meats, a full service deli with hot and cold selections as well as a soup and salad bar. Everyone was always super nice to us Aveda girls when we came in as a group!! Her name escapes me but there is the sweetest girl that works there as a cashier with glasses that was always so nice!! Thank you for spreading kindness- our world can use all of it. Johnny's literally keeps Aveda students alive - so many memories walking to Johnny's for late night eats!! I came here probably a handful of times over the past few years working with the U of A men's basketball team for player's training table. Over my few visits I was able to get the Meatball sub (a few times), the fries, the burger, the buffalo chicken, the salad bar (precovoid), and more. I just stood in line for about five minutes at the coffee bar. Ordered a Dirty Chai Latte. Paid $4.25. It was literally the worst tasting drink I've ever had in my life (and I've had moonshine and Everclear before). It tasted like I was drinking beer poured into an ashtray. Maybe the barista didn't know what she was doing. Maybe it was old tea. Maybe the milk was rancid. Hell, maybe it was a combination but I for sure will never try the coffee bar ever again. This is both a grocery store and a deli. I ordered food to eat on site. I had a hot chocolate, a hot chicken wing and some burnt ends from the deli case. Everything was fine though the hot choc was nothing special. Prices are reasonable. There is no table service; you order at the counter and wait for them to prepare it. read more

Awesome awesome market! This place has some stuff that other chain grocery stores don't have and the prices are reasonable. I really like how neat and organized the store was and how everything was on racks. It gave it a modern look. The deli seemed interesting as they have some delicious sounding sandwiches and a beautiful looking salad bar. The bakery also has vegan baked good and healthy options.
