It was a pleasure being able to spend some time here. It is a little crowded in the areas and they can improve the layout and the traffic inside the store a little better. I would say it's in competition with Whole Foods. If Whole Foods was more like Trader Joe's at the level it is, I had a sandwich here and also barbecue riblets. Both were very good. DONT EAT THE SUSHI!! Drove all the way out here, from the far east side specifically to purchase some fresh fish to throw on the grill for dinner on Labor Day. Neither my wife nor I had eaten breakfast, so we grabbed something each from the grab and go. I had a salad my wife chose premade spicy tuna roll from their sushi area. We sat outside, we enjoyed our meal, we ended up not buying anything from their fish department because it wasn't what we wanted. But we did not even make it the 24 minute drive home, before my wife started throwing up. She's now sick with food poisoning, I notified the manager, they didn't even ask for my name. I don't know how you can go to a grocery store that charges $36.99 per pound for a slab of beef and you get food poisoning from their sushi. read more

Love the selection at AJs. So many niche and specialty products. I love the floral department at AJs. This is where my husband usually finds flowers for me :) This is a great place to grab a gift or treat for someone. We always hit up the bakery section and buy a $2 hibiscus iced tea before we shop at La Encantada. I also just found out kids under 12 get a free cookie which is a nice perk. I do wish they had more vegan and vegetarian options at their hot bar and prepared foods section. read more

I went to AJs today, and had one of the worst service experiences I've had in awhile. The guy behind the cafe counter with light brown hair was rude, dismissive, and degrading. While taking our order, he made me feel like a bother, and like I was stupid. He even got our order wrong, but we were so taken aback by the attitude and demeanor of the AJs staff, that we didn't even feel compelled to let him know the order was wrong. This experience was so disappointing. I'm not the type to leave a review somewhere, this is actually my very first yelp review. This grocery store has everything. Out of all of the AJ in Arizona, this is my second favorite. The wait for a tea was super quick, especially so early in the morning. Store is super clean and the staff was helpful. Recommend the butchers and the cafe for a pastry. read more

What's not to love about this market. Great fresh food options at the deli sandwiches are delicious. My go to for fantastic wine selection and great prices allow you to try something new all the time. There is always someone to help in the wine department to help you pick something out if you need to. My only issue would be they need to hire more cashiers. 9 times out 10 it's busy and they have lines. Large beverage selection, a deli, a pastry section and even a made to order fresh sushi in-store dining service. Outdoor seating also available for dining. Excellent butcher and seafood counter with several options for marinated meats. Produce section was well stocked and fresh. They do support local as well and label locally made items. I also find cute home gifting ideas here. Good experience. Repeat customer. Really nice gourmet grocery store in the Catalina Foothills (La Encantada), which I frequented quite a bit. It's the kind of grocery store with such a great ambiance that I actually found myself really enjoying grocery shopping! So much so that I always ended up wandering around and spending more time (and money, lol) than I expected. Workers are also really pleasant. They're well stocked with fresh fruits and veggies, and a good selection of organics. I also liked the prepared foods in their deli section. I went to AJs to buy pie for Thanksgiving. I was looking for something special. I bought apple, pecan, peach and pumpkin. The pies were tasty, no complaints but nothing to really recommend them either. I'm not sure they were any better than wheat I could get at a Safeway or Fry's. They serve breakfast 6am to 10pm, lunch 11 to 3pm and dinner 4.to 8pm.... You have to call them to get the menu... Their website also has the menu and the to go menu.....There is breakfast, 6am to 10 am on Saturday and Sundays. With an omelet bar on Sunday. They have a taco Tuesday from 11 to 3 PM. They also sell some pizza by the slice every day, which is outstanding. Thursdays They have lasagna lunch from 11 to 3pm and pasta from 4 to 8pm. They had Chicken Parmesan the day I was there. They have diverse collection of domestic and imported wines, beers, soft drinks, health drinks, and spirits. They have wonderful selections of single beers, health drinks, and soft drinks. Their rye whiskey, bourbon scotch, hins, and vodka have depth and quality. Across from their wine and whiskey area. They have a tasting area and a nice selection of cigars in humidors. They also have a nice selection of fresh meat and seafood in their counter area. it's for when you want to splurge. It's a top-notch food store with lots of high-end items. It's a gourmet food store. Remember, it's not about food only, It's also about expectations. Everyone is understaffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. It's in a strip mall area, so parking was plentiful, but I could tell that it would fill up fast as it seemed to be one busy place. I found that staff were more than willing to help me and most of the time would actually walk me to an area that I had questions about rather then just give me a general directions and send me on my way. The store was clean and well organized, and They do a good job of trying to serve people the best way they can and make sure they have plenty of cashiers. If you're a person of a certain age, their already prepared items are extensive. They also have a wonderful fresh flower area. Again, you're gonna pay more. Quality food. They stopped carrying the world's best mustard, Les Trois Cochons as well as Kinders sugar free BBQ sauce. Usually a fan of this store but their meat department seems to be having issues here and there. Numerous times we've purchased meat, chicken, or pork and when we opened it at home it was spoiled, rotten and smelly. It's happened too many times to be an accident, I think they're keeping meats for longer than they should or someone there is not noticing. This time we purchased Italian sausage. It was dark grey with a pungent rotten smell that you can't miss. The use by date as march 3rd and it was purchased on feb 26! Someone needs to look into this over there because we're definitely too scared to buy their meats any more. read more

The AJ's bakery team is still wonderful and their service is great but they just switched to a new line of pastries that are nowhere near as good as the past ones. They advertise new European pastries but they're far too dense and seem like they came from a freezer. This place is Whole Foods on steroids. They have great selection of very high quality food items. A challenge to navigate that I ran into morning was I needed to grab a number to join the queue for bakery items and coffee. I stood around too long and was passed by about 3 folks. I'm fine with it but that was an issue with me being a newbie. The selection is excellent and the service is very smart. I was unable to get a "hot sandwich" due to the pizza oven being too cold. It was running at 500+ deg F. Despite the inability of hot sandwiches the sandwich was awesome. This place is awesome, but a little expensive. read more

I did a small shopping here this morning to buy supplies for a lunch for two. I picked up a sashimi combo ($20), tuna tataki 5 piece ($13), corn bread ($7.99), squid salad ($7), and a package of black figs ($5.99). It was an enjoyable lunch, though the corn bread was a bit stale. Prices are high, more like sushi house prices than grocery store prices. I've shopped at AJ's fine foods in the past but never taken advantage of the bakery, bistro, or grill and I wish I did sooner! This week we tried the bbq chicken sandwich from the bistro, pepperoni/pesto Margherita pizza and a few danishes. All of it was so good! I had no idea you could get pizza here or by the slice! They also have a $5 sushi day I've been told. Coffee & lemonade is great too. Great quick bites or grab and go lunch, but it gets busy so you may have to wait. All of the staff is pretty friendly. Thought this place would be a quaint place for a luncheon. Not so much. Ordered a cheeseburger and a Turkey burger. There are a list of items to ad at dollar per item and a list of sides. I asked for green chilies, they were out, asked for bacon, they were out, asked for a side of beans they were out. I asked for a drink, I was directed to go inside the market. I ordered a Lemon Curd cake from the bakery. I didn't realize they made it with whipped icing which I don't like. The lemon part was really good but the white cake itself tastes like cheap cake and I was not a fan. Too sweet for me. I do recommend adding fresh fruit on top of the cake. Grabbing breakfast at the bakery is kind of hit or miss. Pasties have been stale, but beverages are great--all types of coffees & teas. However, the store itself is pretty darn fabulous with a stellar liquor & wine dept, and many hard-to-find grocery items, tasteful gifts and an AWESOME array of holiday decor. HINT: go first thing on 12/26 and stock up for next year! This is just on their associates. So I always go get pizza there. I love their pizza delicious. I would rate that at five but the associates are always so rude. I had the one today young guy curly black hair just freaking rude. I don't get it why people who deal with people and you ask some question or just rude and it's a lost art on customer service there was nobody else even there for him to be busy but I guess he just feels he needs to be rude so please in your deli pizza area. Arrived at 5:45 pm on a Saturday, not many people in the entire store. I saw the sushi bar & ordered 1 Gila Monster sushi roll because they were out of the ingredients for the other 2 rolls I wanted. Yikes! 2 couples were eating already when I was ordering. I waited patiently for 15 minutes when another couple arrived & upon placing their to-go order they were informed it would be at least 20-25 minutes before it would be ready. They said that's ok. Both of the couples finished eating & paid their bills & left. I noticed the 2 sushi chefs were continuing to make rolls & place them in to-go bags. I asked if one of the bags was my order, as I had walked around the nearby cold case looking at items to pass the time, and was told no, they had received a lot of to-go orders before I arrived. I was never told it was going to take an unreasonable amount of time to fill my order so I asked "how much longer for my order". Was told another 15 or 20 minutes which I thought would be a total of 30-40 minutes from the time I placed my order. I hadn't paid so I just left without my food & went to a fantastic place in a seedy neighborhood closer to downtown for a much better experience. Poor communication with the customer, lack of common sushi items, I won't be back to AJ's for anything. Overpriced & overhyped. read more

I've been going to AJ's since they first opened. Mostly everything is done, the market is upscale & they have unique items. However the pastry/coffee department has changed for the worse. I ordered an iced mocha and when the cashier gave me the total she added an additional charge for "flavor". What??? Mocha IS the flavor!!! The menu prices have disappeared off the wall so I assume they are raising their prices. It's just over the top to charge extra for a "flavor" on a mocha. Greed! read more

My daughter stopped by here to get sushi, she expressed she had an allergy to gluten and they said okay and that the roll she ordered didn't contain gluten. She asked for gluten free soy sauce and they gave her a container of the "gluten free soy sauce" and she noticed it wasn't a normal consistency of gluten free soy sauce and proceeded to ask again, which she was rudely told that it was gluten free. She came home and ate her sushi and the soy sauce that was given as she asked multiple times and believed it would be fine. Not even 10 minutes after she had the sushi she was experiencing an allergic reaction and was sick for 3 days because of this. This goes to show how much their sushi chefs and other employees know about the food they are serving. I went back and was also told there is additional gluten in the sushi rice. This is completely unacceptable to be serving food to those with allergies after they let the staff know multiple times and still serve them food containing gluten. Seriously disappointed and won't be returning. read more
