Things have changed since the new owner a couple years ago, some good and some bad but recently they eliminated the option to have your burrito made "wet" with cheese and sauce over the top. To start, the food is amazing, I got the steak and potato burrito and it was perfect. Taking a singular bite made my tastebuds explode in a good way. It's so big it allows room for left overs. Very disappointed in the service - my food took way too long to come out and I had to go inside to tell them I hadn't gotten my food because the server outside took my number before my food came. As our table/party grew, so did our belly's because we not only had our usual surf and turf tacos, but we also indulged in the ice cold draft Pacifico (a pitcher or two) as well as the popular Mexican Candy Margaritas. Went to eat prior to passing this place on our way back to the car, but I couldn't pass up the Taco Tuesday promotion, $3 tacos and I wanted to try out their "award winning fish tacos. So I was full, already but I'm from Hawaii so I forced myself to get as much Mexican food as possible while in SoCal. Didn't disappoint. The food hit the spot and thru had plenty of salsa and lime to drench my food. As we were walking out, I noticed they had a little outdoor hipster area with tiki torches and full bar. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and it was about a 5 min wait to order. The menu has a little bit of everything to offer: Breakfast, burritos, tacos, nachos, starters, etc. Typical items found at a Mexican restaurant. It took about 15 mins to get our food they were pretty busy. A little nervous to eat here as I have heard and read that wait times can become really long with how busy they become. They have indoor seating which is pretty limited and the rest of the seating is out back through a small hallway. Sitting around the tree was nice and I liked they had it shaded from the sun. It's a little chaotic to have to go back through the hallway to the front as that is where the sauce bar is. Would be nice if they had one out back since majority of people are eating out there. They do bring you your food to make it easier which I appreciate. I got the polo asada burrito with rice and beans on the side. It was about $20 total and I also got a soda. Overall flavor was there and chicken was well cooked and seasoned. The rice and beans came with chips which was nice I used that to gather the chicken that fell out along with the rice and beans. I stopped here mid-afternoon on a Thursday and really enjoyed the tacos. There is street parking in front and around the corner if you can't find a spot in the lot behind the restaurant. They have a small indoor space with a few booths and bar with more seating in the back. We were given a table number placard to take to our seat, and the food came quickly afterward. You bus your own tables. There is a salsa and condiment bar; the salsa verde is my favorite. I really enjoyed the Spicy Surf & Turf taco and it was a huge portion. I was plenty full after 2 tacos and chips with guacamole. The guacamole was unremarkable and pretty disappointing, so I wouldn't get it again. I really enjoyed my time at Johnny Mañanas! When you first walk in you order inside. I wish I read the reviews about the size of the tacos as we were expecting street tacos but instead got regular sized tacos. There was a sign when ordering the expected wait time (which is really appreciated) and because we went on the weekend the wait time was longer at 30-45 minutes. We got chips and guacamole while we waited and then an order of chips and dips which my group enjoyed. We had a group of 5 which made the seating a little more difficult and we saw many people dragging chairs to different tables which was a bit of a hassle but the outside patio was extremely nice and shaded well. We also all got different margaritas which I thought were fairly priced at $9-12 depending on the margarita. For our main course we got a variety of tacos, burritos, and the quesadilla. Service can be slow when it gets busy and I've waited 30+ minutes for my food. Food is definitely worth the wait, though I wouldn't come here if you are hungry and expecting a quick meal. Happened to stumble on this spot while walking around Oceanside and since it was Taco Tuesday and they had some specials I decided to give it a try. The outdoor patio is very spacious with bar and table seating in a very relaxed environment. You can order inside and then find a seat or order at the bar. The food is decent but the service is terrible. They messed up my order after already forgetting to make it. When confronted they said they would ask the owner and then never came back. When we went and asked again she said she never said that. When we asked the front counter all he cared about was telling us we didn't ask for it that way. We did. Basically everybody was finished eating 10 minutes before I even got my food. Literally took 30 minutes to get a cheese quesadilla with rice and beans. Went here twice. First night not so busy, got the fish tacos and the carne asada tacos for Taco Tuesday; the fish tacos are the real star of the show here. Very flavorful meat, a crunchy taco shell and even the oil that drips from the taco is slurpable. This taco shop is right Mission Avenue. It is easy walking distance from all the major hotels. I walked by and they seem to be busy. What caught my attention is their sign at the window.
