Today a friend of mine surprised our group with a ton of empanadas from Johnny Pacific. I have always wanted to try this place and actually never knew they had empanadas so this was the perfect opportunity! I tried the chicken al pastor and spinach & cheese empanadas with sides of chimichurri and aioli. Wow, simply, wow, these empanadas are beautiful and delicious! The crimping and style are superb, you can tell they are hand made since they are different sizes and shapes but not so different that you think "oh I'm being shorted an empanada". The dough is nicely fried, a golden brown, not too thick, crispy, and fluffy! Now the fillings, the chicken was a definite favorite of the two! Juicy chicken, nice spices, and totally FILLED to the rim! The spinach and cheese was a lesser favorite, only because I wasn't too keen on the whole spinach leaves, but the spinach was still cooked well and plenty of cheese! Cheese 4, Apple I like the roasted corn the best, it's got corn, cheese and some pepper so it's got a little kick but not spicy. The crust is nice and crispy. The rest were yummy too. Been coming here for years and always extremely satisfied. With my latest visit, I ordered for pickup due to COVID19 new laws and guidelines. The staff is always friendly and easy to help and assist taking my order over the phone as if we were in person. I ordered quite a bit of food and was told 10-15mins. I arrived 15mins after the quoted time and the food was waiting for my arrival as they were adding the sauces to the bag as I walked in. Delish! I got the grilled steak with the chimchurri (sp?) sauce (read: raw garlic sauce with herbs). It comes with an empanada so I ordered the bacon-jalapeño. Everything was great; the steak was cooked tender, mixed green salad was good (it's just mixed greens with balsamic vinaigrette), French fries were crisp, and the outer shell of the empanada was crisp but soft inside. I was tempted to order more empanadas to try out the other favors but I was too full which means I'll just have to visit again :) read more

Really good empanadas! I mean...REALLY good empanadas! My party of 3 had a total of 12 empanadas which included the following flavors: beef, bbq pulled pork, chicken al pastor, mushroom, spinach and cheese, grilled corn, chorizo and potato, and chicken. Our overall faves were the bbq pulled pork and the chicken al pastor. Their sign says they charge for additional dipping sauces, but they provide you with so many, you really won't need any additional. Their dessert empanadas were delicious as well. The pineapple and apple ones with their caramel dipping sauce were uh-maze-ing! The service is the best part about this place. Everyone's super friendly and patient, especially when it's your first visit. When I get orders to go, they conveniently label all the boxes so you know what you're diving into. If you're not planning on eating them right away, they can give you frozen/refridgerated ones that you can pop in the oven for a later time. The only downside is that it's a super tiny place. Found this place on Yelp as I was looking around what was nearby my friends house to eat. Let me say this place is well worth the trip around the corner. However it is a bit pricey, but I can't complain... everything is handmade and ready to order. I ended up getting the spinach and cheese empanada and the dessert one which was banana and nutella. The veggie one was so savory and the dessert one just had the perfect sweetness to it (came with carmel sauce on the side). They were both very delicious. I tried the grilled corn, chorizo & potato, BBQ pulled pork, Cajun sausage, chicken al-pastor, and kalua pig. Grilled corn - roasted corn with their own flavors mixed into it. Chorizo & potato - A good blend of meats and potato. BBQ pulled pork - think of pulled pork sandwich, but it's inside the empanada. Cajun sausage - probably my favorite one. It was full of flavor with a Cajun feel to it. Chicken al-pastor - Wow! Something new and different from al pastor tacos which is what I'm used to. Kalua pig - if you like pork, bacon, lechon this is for you. Honestly all of the empanadas I tried were so good and I didn't dislike any of them. I'll be back here trying out the rest of their menu. I also tried the sweet & sour Thai, chipotle, basil & aioli, chimi-churri sauces. Sweet & sour sauce - if you're Asian or have had egg rolls with the sweet & sour sauce you're not missing anything by not getting it. Johnny Pacific is now that place. Food: I got a to go order of the chimi-churri skewer combo with bbq and chipotle sauces on the side. I went with the roasted veggie and garlic empanada...this food was beyond amazing. You get SO much food with mixed greens, seasoned fries, two skewers with skirt steak, peppers, and onions, and an empanada. The skirt steak is perfectly juicy and cooked perfectly, which is not something that happens often at restaurants. The empanada is beyond amazing. The vegetables were seasoned well with the right amount of spice and garlic and I honestly could eat these all day. The fries are also seasoned well, nice and crispy, not greasy, and not salty at all, which made me very happy. Sauces: chimi-churri is definitely freshly made and you can tell. There's a fair amount of garlic used and i loved it. The chipotle sauce is a creamy, peppery, thick sauce that i dipped my empanada in...do this; you'll thank me. Bbq sauce was thin, but the smoky flavor worked perfectly for my fries. Finally, the salad dressing...i have no clue what was in it, but i'd like a gallon lol. Seriously these are the best empanadas around! Been going there for years and years (since their debut at the Northridge Farmer's Market!) and the food and service is always impeccable. Our family favorite is the Kailua Pig empanada with the basil aioli sauce!! Cheese/Spinach & beef enchiladas are also great. The dessert empanadas are ridiculously good too - Caramel apple and flan empanada are delicious! Additional good eats - Their Signature Salad is so good as are their skewers & fries. They were extremely organized with all the empanadas that they packed and clearly labeled everything!! The order was ready on the time we specified and everything was delicious as always. This place is located in the San Fernando Valley & is famous for their delicious empanadas! The only reason why this place is only getting 4 stars, is because it's located in a tiny shopping center at a major intersection with several other stores & parking is always very limited if the tiny lot isn't already full of parked cars. A side from that; they have several different variations of empanadas so there is plenty to choose from & honestly all of them are extremely good! However, if this place catches your attention enough for you to check them out; I suggest you call in advance & place a to go order because they are a small place with limited seating & the wait can get pretty long at times! I'm going to use the famous Yelp cliche... This place is a hidden gem! Aside from being an over used cliche, it's absolutely true about Johnny Pacific. The good: + Food is delicious. The empanadas are delicious. They have a huge selection of empanadas to select from; chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian and dessert versions. Keep in mind that the empanadas are deep fried. They are about the size of a large man's hand palm. They were not drenched in oil as some other reviews mentioned. Kailua pork was my favorite and a must try. The ham and cheese was okay. + The decoration and ambiance is good, not amazing, but good. They have some modern touches to the place. + Friendly service. + They serve their empanadas with a few home made sauces. + They offer adhoc selection or you can order a variety of premade combination plates. Could use improvement: - Not enough seating inside. It was a constant struggle to find seating and this place does get busy at dinner times. - Parking is a small corner strip mall so you may need to find some parking in a residential area down the street. - It's a bit pricey. Cost is about $3/empanada. - The empanadas were not all equally filled with fillings... some were half empty and I ended up eating plain crust. Overall, great place! I can't put a number on how many times I've come to Johnny Pacific, but every time I've come it's always a good experience. I'lladmit, I've had some complicated orders (I got some of the empanadas mixed up) and the staff were still completely patient and helpful. As for the empanadas themselves, they are amazing! Their sauces are also incredibly good and go well with the empanadas, salad, and fries. If you're in the area, give this place a try.
