The food is good. No qurestion. The skewers were tasty. The selection of empanadas was broad. The flavors were solid. Everyone in our group of 8 liked everything they had. The service was friendly. The interior is simple and clean and stylish. It just seemed too expensive. An order of skewers and a bit of salad set you back nearly $20. And that's ordering at the counter, bussing your own table and drinkin' water. Again, the food's good and I enjoyed it. But I couldn't help looking down at the styrofoam to-go box that everything's served in and thinkin', "Twenty bucks, for this?" I'm glad we went. I've been wanting to try this place for years. The outer part of the empanadas was also very crispy. They also have so many sauces to choose from and all of them are so good. My favorite is their chimichurri sauce paired with the beef empanadas. First off, wow! These are really rich, crispy, and thick empanadas. The sauce selection is great, I personally really enjoyed the garlic sauce and chipotle mayo sauces ad they paired very well with the beef tinga empanadas. The bacon jalepeno empanada was a great stand alone empanada as the cheese didn't really need any sauce to complement it. Let me begin that I'm not really into empanadas, but I love this place. That's how good it is here! There are so many flavors for empanadas that I couldn't choose, so I went ahead and ordered a dozen for $40.25. Otherwise, they go for $3.95 each, but I say the more the merrier. I'd suggest about 3 empanadas per person, but they're great as leftovers too once you pop them into the oven. Every empanada also comes with a sauce with choices of chimichurri, basil aioli, sweet & sour thai, chipotle, and BBQ. Of course, the desert empanadas were paired with a caramel instead. The empanadas are so tasty that a sauce isn't really necessary, but it's so good that you can't help to add the sauce as well. For the empanadas, I picked the following from favorite to least: bacon jalapeño, cajun sausage, beef tinga, bbq pulled pork, spinach & cheese, chicken al pastor, beef, kailua pig, mushroom, flanada, maui pineapple, and chocolate coconut. The first two were so juicy, so they were great all on its own. Most of the meats were quite similar though, but all very delicious still. As someone not into sweet, the dessert ones were my least favorite but I still love how they incorporated some non-savory empanadas for a change. I would love to see a custard flavor though! Honestly, you can't go wrong with the empanadas here. I can't believe all the different flavors they have. Plus, I liked how they labeled each one on the box so you know which is which. I visited this place once on Pi Day 03/14 this year and we purchased so many empanadas. We were soooo excited for all the different options that we went a little crazy with it. I need to come back to try the other ones. We came early that day and only a few other customers walked in while we were there, but you can see the ladies prepping the empanadas and making everything from scratch. I found this place by accident because we wanted to purchase "pies" since it has been our tradition to celebrate pi day since we have a math nerd in our family. The most memorable pie I can think about til this day is definitely the dessert flan. That homemade caramel sauce is amazing. I can literally sit there and eat half a dozen of those. Unfortunately I only ordered 1, so I was just speaking out loud. If you're in the neighborhood and you love empanadas then don't skip this place. You need to try out all the goods here. When I first moved to the valley many moons ago, we were ubering around looking for food to feed myself and our friends who helped us move. The Uber driver suggested Johnny Pacific....greatest suggestion of my life!! Fast forward to present day, Johnny Pacific is STILL a gem of the valley! They have a new location now, tucked away in the Carl's Jr. Parking lot and their food STILL is the most delecious & unique around here. Every empanada on their menu is delicious, paired with a different dipping sauce I could legit devour like 4 of these things. The breading is light and crispy on the outside, but soft and airy on the inside. Empanadas can very quickly become too bready, greasy and heavy but NOPE...not Johnnys! They offer such a range of fillings for every palette, from savory Beef Tinga or Cajun Sausage, to classics like beef or AL pastor and even sweet ones like Nutella or caramel apple to tame a sweet tooth. There's 5 different homemade sauces and every one is to die for! Did I mention these empanadas are stuffed and folded by hand!? You can taste the love and this place is nowhere near mass produced. My last visit, I got their Lunch Combo which is 2 empanadas and 2 dipping sauces + fries & a can of soda for $13. You can also get a mix and match 4 pack of just empanadas for $14 and its so worth every penny! My empanadas this time around I got the Cajun sausage & the bacon and jalapeno. This place is a hidden gem in the valley and even the lot it's in you wouldn't assume it's good. This is located in the same lot as the Food 4 Less and Baskin Robbins. And I am so mad I didn't get this place sooner, the savory empanadas I had were DELICIOUS. I had the corn, pork kahula and a chicken one that I forgot that all came with their individual sauces and I WILL be going back for more. I was however so disappointed in the banana Nutella empanada- it was very mushy and the Nutella taste was nonexistent. My third time coming and it is still one of my absolute favorite spots in the valley! I live far away from the location, but every time I find myself in the area, I have to stop by. The food is incredible. The empanadas are flavorful and so juicy. Their fries are covered in delicious seasoning. I love that they add a chimichurri as a dipping sauce along with the spicy mayo. According to the owner, John they've been there for 5 years (originally across the street), but wanted a liquor license and moved here to their location, 20133 Saticoy St in Winnetka. You can eat in or take out. Very clean inside. Music was playing not too loud and enjoyable (classic rock). There's a smoker for the smoked pull pork, 5 craft beers on tap (Stone, Freemont, Made West, 818, and Tarantula Hill), Aguas Frescas (made daily with fresh fruit),sodas in cans, bottled beer. We ordered 6 empanadas to go. I had the mushroom (mushrooms sautéed in garlic and butter), bbq pulled pork (which was tossed in their homemade house bbq sauce). My husband had the classic beef (we both thought it was very tasty), and the spinach & cheese (sautéed in garlic, e extra virgin olive oil, Philly cream cheese and mozzarella). Johnny Pacific is really at the top of their game when it comes to operating take-out during COVID! They've come a long way from their small beginnings in Reseda to this new location. I couldn't get through via telephone orders because the line was so busy, but it was super easy to order via their online website even via mobile. The food was ready SO FAST, what you would expect at food truck-surfer grub level speeds. We're talking under 20 minutes, so by the time I arrived from my home for pick-up, everything was hot and ready. Ordered the mix and match 4 empanadas (chicken el pastor, chorizo potato, cajun, bacon jalapeno) & chimichurri skewer plate w/ beef tinga empanada. Of the 5 empanadas, our favorites were the chicken el pastor, chorizo potato, and beef tinga. Skewers were cooked with quality steak meat, so tender and delicious. Paired with the basil aioli was completely MAGICAL. During these times of operation, the restaurant has moved all their tables aside for marked standing and pick up. Due to the popularity, I would recommend the cashier table be moved a bit farther from the food pick up so to limit the people around the staff. Limit the number of people entering the restaurant to be a certain amount at a time/QR digital menu to scan from the outside window for those ordering in person. There were a lot of people coming in during the dinner rush (to be expected) but a bit uncomfortable having so many parties in the room. But otherwise, brilliant how the kitchen is elevated from the ordering floor still separated. Everyone is using contactless payment/sanitizer. I love love love how each order is checked and verified before bagging, this helps prevent the fried food from becoming soggy. My seasoned fries were perfect by the time I got home! It is our third time coming here since they moved from their old location and somehow we always come in December right around the holidays when our theme for dinner is "something wrapped like a present". They make excellent party trays/boxes, expensive as a dish to bring sure. The wide variety of empanadas and plates made it hard to pick what we wanted, but we couldn't have gone wrong. The chicken satay was delicious, moist throughout, and tasty seasoning. The peanut sauce was quite good. We also got the bbq pulled pork empanadas. The dough was absolutely perfect and the pulled pork inside was so good. But them being fresh made isn't the only separator, the fillings are top tier as well. My personal favorites: CAJUN SAUSAGE, BBQ pulled pork, Kahlua pig. Honorable mentions: Bacon jalapeño, beef tinga, chicken Al pastor. Chorizo and potato was decent as well. I can see how some of these could be someone's favorite, just depends on your taste. Simple fusion menu blending a few Latin and Asian favorites... and the best Empanadas around. Every time I go to Johnny Pacific I think to myself, "Wow... this place is so great! Why don't I come here more often?" I guess it's because of the location... a bit far from the freeway in the middle of the west valley. For those that live in the area, it's a great neighborhood spot... for others, a worthy destination! I remember years ago when a foodie friend recommended this restaurant in Winnetka. Back then it was a tiny, hidden, dark, hole-in-the-wall location with no parking... but had amazing personality. And the food was literally love at first bite! They've since moved to a much larger and brighter space, in a big retail shopping center. I really miss the intimate personality of the old location, but also appreciate the ample parking and seating of the new spot. The new restaurant has a simple industrial feel with concrete floors and the signature Johnny Pacific surfer theme... hanging surfboards and TV's showing surfing videos. As I mentioned, the menu is very simple... 4 plates (chicken, salmon and 2 steak plates)... their Signature Salad... French Fries... and 20 different types of Empanadas. My go-to plate is the Chicken Satay Skewers. It comes with 2 really big grilled chicken skewers, a house-made asian sweet peanut sauce, sticky rice, and a salad. This is the first thing I ever tried and it was a Wow then... and still Wows me today. The chicken is great quality and always perfectly cooked. It can literally feed 2 people... pair it with a couple Empanadas and it's perfect meal for 2! The other plates are Korean style and Chimmi-Churri style Steak Skewers... and Wild Caught Salmon in a Thai Basil Ginger sauce. The Signature Salad comes with raspberries, mango, pecans, and goat cheese in an olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette. And last, but certainly not least are the Empanadas! 20 different types... 15 savory and 5 dessert Empanadas. They're house-made with really good quality meat, amazing flavors... and there are 5 veggie options. And they're served with 5 great house-made dipping sauces. I don't have a go-to because there are so many great ones... but some notables are the Beef Tinga, Chicken Pastor, BBQ Pulled Pork and Grilled Corn Empanadas. It's a nice set up at this location because there are more seats that make it efficient for you to sit in a booth alongside the wall or the middle table which can seat more than 6 people comfortably. It's so versatile. I brought a book by myself once and brought a whole bunch of people. Your choice! FOOD: Of course the empanadas! My Faves: the chicken tinga, beef tinga, kalua pork and the very popular melt-in-your mouth spinach and cheese. All flavors come with their unique sauce but my faves are the basil aioli, the chimichurri and the chipotle. But I will say the Basil aioli is definitely my fave!
