Johnny T-Shirt is the best when it comes to UNC swag. This shop has a great combo of unique collectables and memorabilia, and all of the Carolina Apparel you could ever hope for. When it comes to collectables, what they stock is of a really nice quality and most times if I'm looking for something specific I find that they have it when others do not. And their apparel, though they have less Nike than Chapel Hill Sportswear, is of a nice quality and gives fair attention to all the sports, not just basketball. I have a great respect for stores that tell you in no uncertain terms what they are all about just within the name. This store, for example, sells t-shirts. About Carolina. To guys named Johnny. This is a UNC fan store. If you are not a fan of UNC and you step in here, your skin will begin to smolder and you will hiss in pain. Don't do it. If you are a Carolina student or alumnus, though, this should be one of your primary stops on the search for yet more UNC-relate crap. The variety is pretty decent, though their stock doesn't change enough for some people. All in all a very good fan store. read more

If you bleed Pantone 278 (the official shade of Carolina Blue), then this is the place for you. You can get anything Carolina related here, such as a Tar Heel ice chest, a bed spread, t-shirts, Carolina-branded BBQ sauce, temporary tattoos, cheerleader outfits (adult and child), clothing, blankets, stickers, notebooks, class rings, rocking chairs, pennants, pens, diploma frames, old well posters, key chains, and the always handy Carolina Blue body paint. There is a huge selection here (bigger than Student Stores on campus) and they give a 10% discount to alumni association members, so that comes in handy. I'm docking one star only because every time I walk in, no one greets me and when I make my way to the register, the workers are not particularly friendly (they don't say hello, thank you, etc.). We shopped all over Chapel Hill for a sweatshirt for my wife's uncle for Christmas and this spot had the best selection (of sweatshirts, at least). We were looking for something classic (i.e. not a trendy, overpriced Nike design) and we had a few style options and fabric colors including Carolina blue, gray, or navy here. Maybe more importantly, they had a good range of sizes available, especially men's large which was hard to find in any style elsewhere. The price was also better than most spots. This will definitely be the first place I look for future Carolina gear. It's a small store though, so try to visit when it's not likely to be crowded. read more

When I first got into UNC I hopped onto Google to find a place to buy an embarassingly obnoxious amount of UNC gear. I stumped upon the Johnny T-Shirt website and proceeded to spend circa 100 dollars on two boxes full of t-shirts, shorts, sweats, keychains, etc. All of them great quality and enough variety to please the girly sorority girl and the chilled out jock. Upon arriving on campus, Johnny T-shirt became my go to in terms of UNC paraphenelia. Carolina is invested with shops like this, and websites for posers (non tarheels) try to market their gear towards the same crowd, but Johnny T-Shirt remains my favorite. Prices are reasonable (which they are definfeitly not at student stores at Carolina) and selection is top notch. Now that I have graduated, I still hop on the website to buy my fill of UNC gear. read more

I'm a big fan of Johnny T-shirt, not least because they give a discount to members of the UNC alumni association, and I do love a discount. They have all the t-shirts and sweatshirts you could want, including a decent women's-fit section. Where they really stand out, though, is in the gift department. I can come here and buy UNC glasses, prints and posters, kitchen accessories, and collectible mascot figurines and replicas of University buildings. Never go to student stores again! Johny T-Shirt has some of the best t-shirts related to UNC that I have ever seen. They are always clever with their designs, and the price range can fit into anyone's budget. They produce t-shirts for every major event (think national championship) as well, so you don't have to pay an arm and a leg at student stores on campus when attempting to get your Tarheel paraphernalia. The staff here is great as well, and the location in the middle of Franklin St. can't be beat. read more

Locally owned (I think) place to pick up all things UNC. Small place packed full with thin isles. Lots of unusual stuff.

My mom always stops in here for her UNC paraphernalia -- that includes, but is not limited to: temporary tattoos of tarheel feet, Carolina cheerleading outfits for babies, college pennants, framed art portraying Carolina players in all their former glory, stuffed Ramses rams, and --yes-- a myriad of tee-shirts for men and women. I had a classmate once who use to work here and she'd speak so highly of the place-- she was very excited and a bonified fan of the Heels-- without a doubt. There are a lot of UNC-related shops on Franklin St., but Johnny T-Shirt definitely has the widest ranging and highest quality selection. They print a lot of clever, well-designed limited edition t-shirts for big games and popular players. They also recently started carrying organic t-shirts and a stationery line printed with eco-friendly standards, so it's nice to see that they're incorporating environmental concern into school spirit. I don't think they have any big yearly sales, but there are always bargains to be found and the prices are generally lower than Student Stores. The staff is usually friendly and helpful, which is necessary since the sheer volume of stuff can be a little overwhelming. read more
