We went on a Saturday night and it was very busy. Food took about an hour to get to the table. We were hangry and already wrote this place off. However, when the food arrived everything changed. We flew into Pittsburgh this day and called my Mom to take her out to eat! She recommended Johnny's Italian restaurant which is why we went there!! We started by splitting a Caesar salad very good and delicious. The dressing tasted like homemade! And also started with a bottle of Reporta Sangiovese at 40% off, a nice treat for being here on Wednesdays. Mom had their Spaghetti and Meatballs which was very good, Mike had started with Arancini balls and then had the Veal Saltimbocca a La Romano and I got the Veal Marsala. Both were excellent and delicious! After that we were done and ended up taking a lot of it back to our hotel and eating it during the week. Our waitress was excellent in taking our order, making suggestions and getting Mike and myself Manhattans with extra cherry juice and my Mom got a beer to start. Johnnys has forever been a family resturant for as long as I can remember. While they have been around for awhile their recipes are the same and amazing as they always have been. I highly recommend the chicken arrabbiata dish if you enjoy spicy cuisine. Their wedding soup was also full of flavor and very filling in portion. I always have food to take home. Everything we tasted was delicious and fresh. My friend originally made a reservation for a party of 10 at 7PM. She'd heard about Johnny's so many times, and now a friend is playing live music tonight. I'll get to the issues after. The atmosphere is fun like the others describe, an Italian place like my parents used to take us when we were little. We had the cheese sticks- I thought to die for. Friends had shrimp, strip steak, fillet, garlic bread (with their really good bread they put out in baskets) eggplant parm, pasta with sauce, and a shrimp past dish, I had a taste of chicken marsala - very good- didn't realize I had to pick pasta as a side. (Ordering was yelling over music and playing telephone down the table.) He ordered gnocchi and meatball- will taste tomorrow as it was so late we had to take it to go. He works at 6am. So for the delays, I show up at 7, and everyone trickled in. The BDAY girl let us know she HAD called to update it to a party of 7, still at 7. There were still 3 extra places set, and it seemed as though the staff was awaiting their arrival as we hadn't gotten drinks ordered. There wasn't open seat, it seems in the house, so it's unfortunate they didn't rearrange, if possible, for another table. Also. Somehow they had us down for 6pm. If you met us, you'd know better. After every other table ordered, we got our shouts in. Eventually we hear a big loud crash - yup that was all our food. If you've worked in a restaurant, you know the back has to be livid at this point. So, we are waiting again and decide we are going to have to take ours to go. It was still fun to go with friends enjoy the live music, we could have done without the passive aggression and the strange literal running around by some of the staff that ended, as we predicted, in an accident. I will endorse the "fine dining" aspect of its name for several valid reasons. "Fine" can be described in many ways. In comparison to all else in the immediate area, it is fine dining, complete with cloth napkins and table coverings, low lighting, mirrored walls,a fancy bar, and full menu with higher price points on entrees and appetizers. Atmosphere is warm, inviting and lively. No subdued conversations going on in here. In fact, I was told it gets so busy most Saturday evenings, that tables are hard to come by. Service is pleasant, and professional, yet with a twist of being served at home. So relaxing. A majority of the patrons were dressed up for their Saturday night on the town, so it helped set the tone for being somewhere special. Definitely a place that attracts a regular crowd. Overall, this 1st experience was an enjoyable one. We did not make reservations but the hostess was able to accommodate us as a walk-in. The server and support staff were on top of it and did a great job! We ordered the arancini and fried zucchini. My great aunt asked for extra lemons for the zucchini and used them to squeeze over top instead of using the sauce...if you have not tried it you should....although the sauce was great! I got the salad with dinner and she got the wedding soup. The wedding soup was amazing....rich and hearty. I ordered the gnocchi and meatball and she had the veal with a side of spaghetti. She told me that the dish reminded her of her mothers...love this!! The whole thing from start to finish was great! To celebrate my mother's 85th birthday, we chose Johnny's as the place for our family to gather. Our disappointment in the experience is profound. We were immediately presented with "family-style" food options that we didn't ask for to make it easier for them to serve a large party. It took 40 minutes to get our appetizers, another hour for soup and salad and after being there for over 2.5 hours, our entrees were no where to be seen. When we requested to talk to the manager, we were denied. It was an all around horrible experience and ruined my mother's birthday celebration. A one star rating is generous. read more

Very disappointing, made reservations 3 weeks in advance and when we arrived to be notified that our table was right next to a band that was playing, we were atleast given the option of moving to another table which we chose but the table was clearly out of the area of our waitress so she was very much overwhelmed so our service was definitely affected by that, it took forever to get our food because of that. Four of us decided it was time for some small town Italian cuisine. Small town... BIG taste! First the only CON we came up with: The place is big and it was very crowded. The kitchen couldn't keep up with the orders. We didn't mind, as we were still in full holiday mode, but could be an issue for some. We tried for the Oysters Rockefeller to start, but they were out. There were plenty of others to choose from, but not what were set on, so no replacement. Salads were fresh, crisp and the house dressing had a pleasant zip. Bread fresh, real butter... yay! I had the scallops - they were worth the wait. Very large and on a bed of spinach sautéed with bacon. Each scallop seated on a perfectly ripened tomato slice. Oh my yum. Hubs had the pasta special. Ho hum yum... Friend had the Eggplant Stuffed Parm and it was beautiful and a large portion. She pronounced it as tasty as it was lovely. Two of us ordered the risotto as a side - it was in cream sauce and very soupy, not unpleasant - but not what we expected. Service was excellent and ambiance was casual, warm and inviting.
