Imagine a bar where everything looks and feels like it's 1981, except everyone inside the bar has aged 25 years while their clothes stay the same and their hair turns grey. That's pretty much the scene at Johnny's on a Friday and Saturday night. It's a dance club and bar that caters to the 50 and up crowd. And when I say 50 and up, sometimes it's WAY up. The music is from the 1940's all the way up to the early 1980's. The disco balls and lights haven't been altered since the era when disco ruled the earth. The menu probably hasn't changed an inch in twenty years. There isn't a posted dress code, but apparently it exists since I was asked to leave once for removing my sweater when I got hot and only having on a t-shirt underneath. Maybe I was freaking people out by being young and in decent shape. Who knows? There are frequent Elvis and Sinatra celebratory events at the Hideaway, as well as holiday specials. The staff looks like they've all been there since the 70's. Hell, some of them could be 70, let's not beat around the bush. The bartenders are efficient, and grizzled would probably be the best word for them. They take no nonsense, especially from non-regulars (and kids in their twenties and early thirties). Johnny's is a fantastic place to step back in time, see some older people who still like to shake their groove thang, and potentially be hit on by someone old enough to be your mom or dad. If you want to dance, there's no shortage of willing partners, and many of them are phenomenally good. If nothing else, if you're feeling down about your social life and you're young, head over to Johnny's for some instant gratification as you are fawned over by elderly swingers. read more

Updating my review again.. deleting my previous post.. After visiting this place over 100 times, I had a very disappointing visit about a year ago. (But all places have good days and bad.. and the owner was very apologetic for my 1 bad experience). So, I went again last night with about 20 friends. We had an amazing time. The music was banging. The crowd (was tightly packed) and energetic and fun. The food was amazing and our server, Erin, was prompt, friendly and attentive. If you like strong drinks, this place is for you! The valet guys were very pleasant too.. The only downfall is that this place is such a popular spot that the wait is usually over an hour on Weekends. So, be prepared to pay $20 extra ($30 total) pp for immediate entry. Waiting for over an hour or two.. and paying the $10 cover, is not advisable... at all.. But, we had a wonderful time. This place is so much fun- one minute, the DJ is playing Frank Sinatra, and four minutes later, he's playing Britney Spears. On one side, I see my friend dancing... on the other, I see a woman who is probably pushing 70, but due to her *ahem* enhancements, looks more like 55. I told her that I liked her dress and we became fast friends. That's the thing about Johnny's; everyone is really friendly... sometimes, too friendly. The highlight of my night was when I told my friend that "I'll be back in a minute! Just going to the restroom..." Like Sophia B, had I known what Johnny's was, I wouldn't have come (lol). Some friends brought me here after dinner at BarTaco across the street. When we arrived (Sunday night I think), there was a small cover but no line. Valet out front. Very smoky inside, so dress accordingly. Easy to order drinks at the bar, but no drinks on the dance floor. There was a cover band rocking their hearts out. So a total and classic "dive bar" scene. Johnny's is a mix of people, though mostly older and white. More fun than you'd think, and a good place to end the night if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I want to be clear that this review is about the customer service that I recently experienced, not the venue. I visited Johnny's on a weeknight. I went solo and apparently that presented a problem for one of the staff members. I sat at a table for approximately two hours without incident. I saw people leave a table and decided to move to be closer to the dance floor. I sat at that table for about 20 minutes. I then was approached by a guy who wanted to seat a couple. The manner in which he spoke to me was extremely rude. I asked why he was telling me to get up from this table. Instead of articulating whatever the house policy was in a courteous way he just kept saying that I need to "get up", "just get up". I'm not a dog and I didn't appreciate being spoken to like one. I explained to him that I had been in Johnny's for two hours without any problem and that I was sitting at a table. He says to me that I didn't follow the rules and that no one sat me there and no one switched me. What rules??? I had visited Johnny's a few times and enjoyed myself. Each time I visited I TOOK A SEAT WHEREVER I COULD. Tonight I happened to encounter someone who must have had a chip on their shoulder. I hope that someone from Johnny's management staff reads these reviews and perhaps trains the staff on how to explain their seating policies better. It was needed in this circumstance because this guy actually called the police officer to escort me out of the place instead of explaining the "policy". There were other tables where the couple could be seated but I guess he had to show me that he was the boss. This was a completely surreal experience as I have never been put out of an establishment, particularly because I wouldn't "just get up" when being spoken to like a dog. The young lady that was my server (her name is Sam) explained the process to me in a professional and courteous manner. I thanked her for doing so, gave her a tip, and followed the officer outside. I don't know the name of the guy otherwise I most certainly would have listed it here. Perhaps I will find out when I speak to someone about my horrible experience. Went with a couple girlfriends a couple months ago to celebrate a birthday, we were told to check it out. Got there around 10:30 on a Friday night. They have valet parking, or you can park across the street in the shopping plaza. If you park in the plaza, look for a guy by the bank selling parking passes. If you don't get a parking pass, you will get your car booted. We saw 3 cars with boots when we went back to our car at the end of the night. There was no wait and it was $5 each cover. In the winter they have a coat check, it was $1 a coat. The place was packed. You can tell they allow smoking. There was a group having an ugly sweater party and a bachelorette party amongst the crowd. The look and vibe of the place was 50's mobster/rat pack lounge with a DJ spinning 80's-90's dance and hip-hop. Most of the guys seemed to be 30 and under or 60 and up. Staff even wore shirts that said, "Got Cougars?". We definitely felt like we were constantly stared at by most of the older men in the place and were approached by several. You could barely get on the dance floor. It was so packed you'd immediately get surrounded by the under 30 guys and they seemed to think women wouldn't be able to tell which of them were trying to cop a feel. I love this place so. effing. much. Stiff drinks, old school music, and one of the best dance floors in atlanta. Stephen (my favorite bartender) is always friendly and perfectly attentive. He makes sure all of his bar guests needs are taken care of, going above and beyond every time. His shirt is always perfectly starched, and his hair well groomed (although I'd like to see it down and loose Fabio style just for reference). The ambience is unparalleled, features include stemmed glassware and ancient carpet, a cigarette machine and a DJ that I'm pretty sure spins compact discs which is a-ma-zing. Johnnys is always a good time. I would recommend going later at night there as the action really pics up then. There is always a DJ there spinning the best earth wind and fire songs mixed with abba and Frank Sinatra. You just don't get that anywhere else. This is not a classy joint as they try to parented to be but that's exactly how I like it. It's no pressure, just show up, hit the dance floor (no drinks on the dance floor) and have yourself a good time. The crowd is a mix of old and young. I have frequented them for years. This last Saturday was my birthday (45th). They sure gave me one of the best tables (right side of dance floor, against the wall) Our server Alina was just amazing! It felt like she had eyes on the sky and knew when we needed fresh drinks! The fun really goes on and on here. People of all legal ages come to shake it up! The dance floor cannot have anyone with their drinks and the bouncers are eagled eyed on that aspect. This is great because it protects the dancers from slips/falls caused by potential spilled/glass breakage. There are elderly party goers so this is a really good rule to enforce. This venue was completely overrun with cigarette smoke. People reading this post that have sensitivity to cigarette smoke, be warned. Also, separate checks are not allowed at table service. When I wanted a reason why we were not allowed to have separate checks, she stated, "that's our rule". At that point, I stated I was going to purchase my drinks at the bar because I wanted my check separated. After my statement, she stated, "go to the bar, and you will lose your table". This was my first time at Johnny's with a group of coworkers, past and present celebrating a little mini reunion. The vibe was nice and the drinks were good, the bartender and waitress were attentive and the DJ was spinning beloved classics. All the makings of a great night, until we encountered the over zealous dance floor security who rudely told my friend to get off the dance floor with this drink. It was our first visit and we were unaware of the dry dance floor policy. My friend told the security guard not to address him in such away and was escorted out. It was unbelievable, my friend was never let back in and the night was a bust. As much as I enjoyed the night leading up to the point, I doubt I will visit again in the future. Last night, my friends and I were at Johnnies for the night, like we have been many times before. Usually, we have a great night, but last night was different. My friend and I were on the dance floor when when one of the bouncers came onto the dance floor and shined a light in her face "because she wasn't smiling enough". He started hitting on her, and she was not reciprocating so I asked that he leave her alone. He then spun around and started saying disgusting things to me along the lines of i was "an ugly dark bitch". I have never felt more disrespected and appalled at someone's behavior. Ten years ago this WAS a great spot before every SEC school 'dudebro' grad started crowding out the dance floor with the classic over-bite, arm-wavin' foot shuffle. Plus they added sports on TVs @ some point and ditched the classic movie stars projector screen vibe. Oh, and now it's a shitty mix of dance hits- the whole allure was great 70s disco. I didn't know you could do that by law. They make you buy water because you are a woman. Exact words from bartender. Johnny's Hideaway is a total time warp out of body experience! This is not your typical hangout, this is a cultural experience you have to be present for in order to understand. My 5 childhood girlfriends came here on Saturday night as part of a mini reunion, we graduated in '79, the year JH was founded. We booked a table in advance, arrived at 8:30 and it was empty. Until around 9, when the masses started to arrive. The first thing we experienced was the overwhelming number of people smoking (so gross) and the really poorly poured cocktails. The waitress was a bit better than a truck stop diner waitress. The music finally picked up volume and we were up on the dance floor. Oh buddy here's where things get spicy! The age range is 20-90, and there are several guys dancing in the middle of the floor- completely alone. The "bouncers" are CIA trained, clearly spotting and eliminating drinks on dancefloor and certain social media activity. They also had to be fairly astute at trying to curtail the EXTREMELY inappropriate and explicit activity, not to mention groping, going on by women, men and everything else on the floor! People clearly have not learned any lessons about appropriate personal space, and can be the most bizarre dancers ever! Now, all of the above factors would normally result in a single star review, but this was different. This was the most crazy bizarre experience my friends and I have had in a long time and we had a total blast! Came home smelling like smoke and like we had a wild crazy night which we did, but can't wait to go back! Our total check was only $120 for 6 people including auto added gratuity. Maybe because each drink consists of grain alcohol with a splash of food coloring. The ambience was pure red velvet, and a total throwback to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet, but the music was total 70s all the way! When we left at 11pm, the line was practically around the building. People could pay more to bypass the line, but the others had to wait. Overall what a fun night based purely on experience but not quality. We had an awesome time and highly recommend trying this place for a fun time you will never stop laughing about! read more

WHERE DO I EVEN START!!!! This place is one of the BEST Atlanta gems (Clermont Lounge and MJQ are in this same category). Yes, you can still smoke in there, it's been around since like 1970 something, so smoke away and never change. It's not a hipster fake club. It's the best "wedding reception" you WILL ever go to. They play the best music and is one of the BEST places for people watching. Are the lines long on Friday and Saturday nights...........YES, but ask yourself "why" people. IT'S BECAUSE IT IS THAT MUCH FUN!!! Can you pay a bit more and skip the line, yes. Think about it, most clubs I know of here in Atlanta, they have these huge lines and then once you get inside it's dead. Johnny's is NOT like that. So if you're looking for a quiet, not packed, not fun place...........DON'T COME HERE! I also love the Security guys here too. I always know I'm being "looked" after by them, in a great way. Can some of the men get aggressive, yes, but where else can you go knowing that you have amazing security looking out for you. Plus, you can't bring your drink on the dance floor and LOVE that and security enforces that. Means no spills or broken glass that you have to worry about. Plus, the times I come to Johnny's on my own I ALWAYS know that one of the great security guys will walk me to my uber, if I ask and they are never fussy about it, no matter how busy they are. I do a lot of entertaining in Atlanta and Johhny's is ALWAYS on my top 3 list. The fun magical nights never disappoint. You know EXACTLY what you are getting at Johhny's and G-d bless them for it. NEVER EVER DISAPPOINTED! If anything when I bring new people, every person has the same reaction, "How come you did not bring me sooner?" And "I'm coming back here every weekend." The music is amazing (even though it could be changed up just a little or maybe I'm just there so much :), but it's great music and the DJ plays the entire song. AWESOME and Old-School: I could write a book about this place, but I've only been here a few times. This is a classic, old-school nightclub that is fortunately very much caught in the 40s, 70s, 80s and 90s sounds. Disco-Sinatra-Madonna back-to-back!! This place draws an upscale crowd of all ages who are here to drink, dance, and socialize like it's 1980. This is a classic and legendary venue that has great bartenders, great service, and a staff that manages to keep everything organized and under control (no drinking on the dance floor). On the weekends after 10 PM, you may be faced with a long line to get in... So consider arriving by 10. If you have a group who are going to be attending, consider calling and making a table reservation. There are two bar areas, two separate rooms, and one large and zany dance floor! Valet Parking.
