If you live in Atlanta you have to go just once. Just to see for yourself. Think of it as a side quest. Will appeal to an older/middle aged crowd the most but if you enjoy throwback music you'll have a good time (everything from James Brown to Party Rock Anthem, of course peaking at the latter). The dance floor is almost immovable and as a young woman you will have to strategically dodge 60+ year old men with mullets to have a good time. we didn't have major issues, buuuut I would also suggest covering your drink just in case it's just a vibe I get ya know?? but in a small dose it was fun! Also the fastest bartender I've ever seen?? He was done before I had time to process I ordered a drink. Incredible. Wow, what can I say about Johnny's Hideaway but it's pretty much one of a kind for Atlanta and maybe the country! Holy sh** and throwback experience for me... I popped in on a quiet Thursday night after dinner at FLIP Burger and figured I'd just watch a bit of football. As the night wore on, the crowd went from 60-year old seniors to 45 year old silvers and cougars down to 25 year old cuties tearing it up on the dance floor to disco tunes and classic ballads. O-M-G!!! Total spectacle out there watching an old-school club scene with this mix of people. Bartenders and servers are super solid and apparently have been working at Johnny's for most of the 30+ years of its existence. They kept me happy with G&T's along with water for hydration. The music was ok - too many "slow" dances. Strange transitions between songs. Younger guys are definitely there to pick up older women. One word of caution - my friend and I both had two glasses of Chardonnay, not out of the norm for us at all. I needed to limit myself as I had a 6:30am flight the next day. We were treated like second class citizens. We were not given the same customer service nor curtesy as other patriots who came in behind after us. We were a party of two black women who came to enjoy some music and dinner, but were denied the request to change tables when we were seated in the back near the kitchen. When a group of other guest of the lighter persuasion came in and was ushered to the same area, they complained and got to be reseated in a less traffic area. We were stunned, but we let that slide. Then we moved ourselves to one of the six empty tables away from the kitchen, only to be told we had to move back to the back again because those tables were reserved. So we did. Next we were invited by a guest who wanted to give up their table to us so that they could join another party. We thanked them, sat at their table, and began to socialize with them. The waitress brought her bouncer to us to make us move back AGAIN! The staff were relentless in their efforts to mess with us the entire time. We paid for our two drinks at the back table and were interested in buying another round with dinner, but after much harassment, we decided that Chick Fila was more worthy of our dollars. No one wanted to provide me the name of the owner or manager when I asked upon leaving. The only name that I could muster out of anyone was from a young polite black man who told me the manager's name was Edgar as he pointed him out to me. Funny, it was the same guy who originally sat us in the back by the kitchen. Ha! I've spent lots of money at this establishment in the past when I threw a party there, so I am quite surprised at the change in servers and service. Johnny's Hideaway reminds me of an old Vegas lounge. When we walked in it was like stepping into a time machine. There were tons of old photos of celebrities and they played all different kinds of music. From Prince to Madonna to Bruno Mars. Lots of fun and very "swanky". The crowd is very diverse and gives you a dive bar type feeling. Now to the tips:While this place was super charismatic the cigarette smoke was so intense we had to leave early. It becomes nauseating when you're in there longer than a few moments. If you check this place out prepare to leave smelling like an ash tray! Parking is also an issue. While visiting Atlanta (Buckhead area), my friend highly recommended Johnny's Hideaway. After valeting, we stepped back in time as we entered the light dimmed foyer. A gentleman asked for our coats and then we were seated (optional). We chose to sit at a high top to take in our surroundings before going to the dance floor. Arrived just after 9 pm. There were probably twenty other customers. Within 30 minutes, the place was wall to wall! A variety of ages and walks of life. This place is a step back in time (in a good way). I love Johnny's Hideaway I have had the pleasure of enjoying some great times there. But please be careful with the parking crew. 2 weeks ago, I parked there and left my IPAD hidden under the seat thinking it was safe. When I picked my car up, the Valet guys just parked my car and ran, I couldn't find anyone to pay the $10 fee, they parked my car and left my keys in it and ran off. I thought this was rather strange, but when I got home I realized why, they had stolen my lap top from under my seat and scratched my car at the back. Most. Fun. Ever!!! I have heard about Johnny's as a cougar bar with oldies music and young guys trying to pick up older ladies. I can say most of that is probably true haha! Parking across the street is easiest- $5 and you can park with ease. Make sure you are there before 12, otherwise the line is toooo long and they may not let you inside since it's so crowded. There is a dress code so guys make sure to google first! Ladies, as long as you're looking cute, no problems at all. Once inside, try and find a table or spot at the bar. Hard to do, but after a lap, we made friends and shared a table with some guys looking for seats also. The dance floor was packed and there are bouncer guys in suit jackets reminding you not to take videos, photos or bring drinks on the dance floor. We danced and danced in the aisle near our table. It was so much fun and the hours passed fast!! This may be my new place.. we will see! read more

I will never go back here and I was completely embarrassed of my staff of eight people from my office. I sat in the area and the bartender mentioned I had to sit in her area and pay her or I'd have to move and I had $150 tab in the other area. She said do you want to speak to the manager and I said yes and next to you know I got dragged out of the place by neck and when I got out front, they said that the bartender said that I threw a drink at her. When I asked her to get a manager, I tipped over the straw glass and that was it and she told the guys that I threw a drink at her, which was completely false. I have Hayden my employees inside of this place and I've got thrown out front and it's completely embarrassing and I will never go here again and will look at following a lawsuit b/c this was my best 8 ppl from my firm here and they are completely embarrassed read more

We went to Johnny's with some friends last weekend and didn't enjoy our experience. There is a $10 cover, which isn't a big deal except at 10pm the dance floor was already completely full and you could barely walk, let alone dance. The music was primarily from the 80s which was fine but the DJ did not mix anything, so after listening to the same song for over 5 minutes it lost its luster and became very boring. The crowd vibe is much older, maybe 40s+ and the drinks were horrible. Probably the worst tasting drinks I've ever had at a dance club, they tasted like cough medicine. There are so many fun places to go out in Atlanta so I wouldn't waste your time here. read more

Did someone Yelp that the dress code is "racist"? I've never heard such a thing, I wish they would have expanded on that. Word of advice: never bother with any reviews from the Yelp Elite (except for this guy Daniel that's literally been to every place in Atlanta, his reviews are good and fair). Anyhow, this place is a bar with a little bit of bar food. You come, you drink alcohol, maybe you dance a little, nosh on some mozzarella sticks, then you go home. You want free parking and cheap booze? Go to the Circle K. The music is perfect - if you don't like it then you're too young and you might want to consider frequenting a place that plays louder music and has more expensive drinks and no parking at all. Ok this review is not about the steakhouse, it's about the club. I truly felt I was in the original Twilight Zone by Rod Sterling. I have never seen a more spastic group of dancers in my entire life. However, was is important is that this group were having a good almost great time. So I do applaud them. I left thinking this was a filming of "Revenge of the Nerds" Although I will never go back it's nice to see people of similar test can enjoy a night out. Always a blast at Johnny's. Bouncers are on top of things with inebriated guests and music is fun and a blast from the past to dance to. Heard that the regular DJ is ill and that's a shame but now there is hope to get some fresh blood in there to take requests and not cop an attitude, something he always did. House wine is good and cheap and it's fantastic to people watch, just don't try to take pictures of folks on dance floor or bouncers will jump down your throat. Priceless jaw-dropping entertainment is what Johnny's Hideaway is all about. I was visiting the town on business and a bunch of locals suggested we come here... even a Wednesday night. To our surprise, you open the door and it feels like you are crashing a wedding. Older people spinning on the dance floor to classic '60s, '70s, and 80's music. I LOVE IT! If you are in town you MUST put this on your list. From what I'm told it doesn't matter what night you come it will be packed. It has a very dark ambiance with plenty of bar seating. I was told by the people that suggested this place that we needed to watch out because cougars will be approaching non-stop. As a male, it was a big confidence booster. The crowd is older (the 50's+) mixed with young professionals. Great time and I wish Fort Lauderdale had something comparable. Can't wait to come back. read more

It's time for me to review all the places I checked into while in Atlanta. The fact that people can smoke inside, makes me wanna take a star...but I won't. We just left a place one parking lot over and it was dead there. It was like the Jersey Shore, but with paler people and scattered. This spot is for the older crowd and it was packed. On a Sunday. SUNDAY. The smoke is deadly though. The live music was pretty good and everyone was dancing and moving. They stopped charging a cover at some point, which I thought was kinda foul. Sampler was alright, needed to soak up the alcohol. The drinks were also ok. I would come here if you're looking for people in their late 30's on up to kick it with. But don't expect it to be like Back to School night or Step Up. read more

Disabled and handicapped, please note; you are not welcome at Johnny's Hideaway. Regarding the night of Saturday night, March 11th into Sunday morning, March 12th, 2017. I suggested to a group of seven friends that we visit our old stomping grounds at Johnny's Hideaway. When we arrived at about 130 AM or so, there was (according to the valet), a $10 cover charge each to wait in a 30 minute line to get in, or $30 each to get in after about a five minute wait. I asked the valet if I could let my friends hold a place in the $10 line for me since I'm handicapped. I showed the valet my handicap sticker, and he said that my group could do that for me. I told my friends to pay for my cover, tell whoever was taking money that I was coming, go in and scout out a seat for me, and then call when they had one. I've had worsening back and neck problems for about eight years. I've tried physical therapy, chiropractic, massage, hydro shots, etc. and finally ended up having to get two separate fusion procedures that fused seven levels of my spine together. Neither procedure worked. I'm not paralyzed or in a wheelchair, but standing for more than about five minutes causes serious pain. I even managed to join my friends in line for about ten minutes, but started feeling a lot of pain, so I went back to the car to wait. My wife called me about ten minutes later, and said she explained the situation to the door man, but that he would not let me "break in line" unless I paid the higher, $30 cover. By this time, the bar was due to close in an hour, and my friends had all been charged a cover and were waiting for me inside, while I tried to explain the situation to this guy who was relishing every little bit of power that fate had afforded him. Apparently, he felt like he just wasn't taking shit from no cripple, tonight. He said he didn't know that I wasn't just making it all up. I showed him my placard. He said, "that could be anybody's. You don't look handicapped." I thanked him for his diagnosis, assured him that my doctor's medical opinions differed significantly from his, and I showed him that the name on my drivers license matched the one on the disabled placard. He continued to let people in while I stood there hurting for about fifteen more minutes. He acted like he was waiting to get permission from somebody to let me in, but after a while, I realized that he was trying to prove a point. I asked to speak to a manager, and he said he IS the manager. He said that I could have stood in the line already if I wasn't standing there arguing with him. My point, exactly. I asked him his name a few times, and he ignored me. I later found out his name is Ben. I told Ben that my disability makes it painful as hell for me to stand there arguing with him over whether or not I 'deserved' to be able to get in or not, especially after we already ran this by the valet. All he would have had to have done was ask the valet if this conversation happened, but Ben couldn't be bothered to do this. The valet was nothing but nice, and apologized for the way Ben handled this. In the eight years that I've had to deal with severe back pain, I have found almost everywhere I go to be accommodating to minor needs. Johny's Hideaway provided me, tonight with my first real dose of exclusion based solely on my medical situation. There were dozens of people in line watching this embarrassing conversation happen. If anyone reading this witnessed it happening, please pm me. I also suggest that, since I have audio and video of the conversation as well, Johnny's management or owners review the tape of the door so they may discuss the situation with Ben before the next step. Although we haven't been to Johnny's in the five years since my spine began committing mutiny, we used to be regulars. In fact, I have three venue championship coins from when the Atlanta Poker Club used to play up there. We were there once or twice a week for years. I just wanted to go back and try to have a good time with my friends, but instead, Ben had to have his little power trip. I know that Johnny's used to have the reputation as a cougar den. Perhaps Ben is trying to keep the old crowd out in order to get a younger clientele. If that is the case, it looks like he's doing a fine job of keeping out the riff raff. The moral of the story is this : If you have a disability and plan to visit Johnny's Hideaway, you better be sure to roll your ass up in a wheelchair, bring a note from your doctor, bring your handicapped placard, bring any medications you are prescribed, and any other corroborating evidence so that Ben MAY be generous enough to grant you entry. read more

I'm a 30's guy, came here solo, Saturday night, here's my take- This is a prime example of why the yelp star's system is flawed. I just left a review of Tongue and Groove and gave them 4 stars. Head-to-head, for what each of these places are, it would be impossible to compare those two places based purely off star rating. That being said, for what Johnny's Hideaway is, I'm a fan. I showed up and there was a pretty long line out front, I was warned of this, and told that if you give the bouncer $20, you'll instantly get in. The line almost immediately started moving and I was inside within maybe 10 minutes. This place reminded me of something you'd see in Malibu or Santa Monica. It had a feel to it of a hole-in-the-wall that people with money go to. Outside looks like a glorified Italian restaurant or maybe a fancy doughnut shop, but the inside is much larger than you'd expect, and has that classic 80's bar feel. The music was amazing. Everyone was having a great time, dance floor packed. The place is really casual, I was way over dressed in a suit, but there were other guys in suits but they were part of like wedding parties or something of that nature. I was told to come here because it was an amazing experience as a "cougar bar," I soon realized however, that all the "cougars" were my age, and that was pretty hilarious. There were some much much much older Asian ladies lurking around, if you're into that sort of thing, you're welcome for the tip off. One thing that I hadn't seen in quite some time, was the token, "bouncer with the kid in a full nelson" dragging him towards the door. It's that sort of place. Within about 5 minutes of me being on the dance floor, some kid started pushing me, and it could have easily escalated into a full throw down. Luckily, I'm from Rhode Island, and dealing with that up there is like brushing your teeth, so I knew how to easily manage it and didn't really even think twice about it. Seemed like everyone here already knew one another, as if it was just one massive wedding reception going on (the respectable people you'd want to social with). There were other people ranging from people that might have been legit homeless, to all other walks of life in there. Majority though was late 20's-to-mid 30's white people. Would I come again???? Despite having been to seemingly every bar, saloon, gin joint and crap hole in Atlanta; despite my love of Elvis (both Presley and Costello), Sinatra and Englebert Humperdink; despite my heretofore unseen (by Yelpers at least) ability to easily switch from swing to rumba to cha-cha (thanks to a previously unmentioned series of teen dance lessons required of, uh, cotillion escorts), last Saturday represented my first trip to Johnny's Hideaway. I'd always meant to go. I don't listen to any music made later than 1991. I'm surly and often complain about things my body does to me as I age. I talk about bowel movements to anyone who'll listen and would tell kids to get off my lawn if I had one. You'd think that Johnny's and I would be perfect together. Not quite. While I appreciated the kitsch factor and the music, there were other parts that made my brain weep. First, it's crowded. CROWDED. People are elbowing and jostling for space which is made worse when you're elbowing a 67 year old woman reeking of Virginia Slims and Elizabeth Taylor's White Diamonds. The dance floor on a Saturday night is bizarro mosh pit where up is down, left is right, Doc Martens are sensible orthopedic shoes and Wilford Brimley will kick you in the nuts and grab your wife's ass quicker than you can say "Dia-BEETUS." Rather than go on, here's a series of Facebook posts I made that night: "Hanging out w/ a bunch of hipsters. By that I mean all the artficial hips at Johnny's Hideaway." 10:47pm "This shit is like old people prom. Playing 'Sexy Back'? Based on the looks of this crowd, it's back from the grave." 11:33pm "Now they're playing 'Pretty Young Thing.' Had to ask Wife to show me on the doll where some dude touched her." 12:10am "Think I saw some dudes doing drugs in the bathroom. Of course it was Lipitor." 12:50am "Anyway this night answered the question 'What DO you wear to Johnny's Hideaway?' Depends." 12:51am "Home now. Time to wash off the stench of Ben Gay, Pall Malls and shame." 1:00am I kid. I kid because I love. It's not really ALL bad. The servers managed through the chaos like the professionals they are. The music is kind of fun. I just didn't expect all these aging Baby Boomers to recreate the Stones concert at Altamont. Holy crap, with these people in charge for the past 30 years, no wonder our country is in a ditch. Sanctuary's calling out for some of these folks. If the patrons at Johnny's were a little less obnoxious, I'd give a solid four stars, but that night deserved no more than three. I've been to Johnny's during the week and love the atmosphere and music. Most recently, I went last Saturday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. I had never been on a Saturday night and I was shocked at how packed it was at 10:30. There is a $5 cover charge for Saturday night, a lot less than downtown bars. Frankly, all we did was drink and dance. And we had a hell of a good time. We used two servers, both of which were friendly and quick with both drinks and credit card receipts. I commend them on being so good with such a huge crowd. Johnny's is known for it's older crowd (50+) and they were out in full force Saturday night. I love that some older people get out and show that dancing doesn't end just because you get some wrinkles. Normally, I can't spend a lot of time in Johnny's because it's so smoky, but for some reason it didn't seem so bad Saturday night. We had a table and no one at the tables around us was smoking so our area was relatively smoke-free. The sure proof was there when I left because I didn't smell like an ashtray. Because we were drinking a lot, we took taxis to and from Johnny's and there were plenty available when we left around 1am. But there is free parking everywhere because it's in the center of a mecca of strip malls. read more

I'll admit it, I'll admit it. Back when I was young and single I use to hunt cougars, and well as we all know Johnny's Hideaway is a cougar den filled with lots beautiful (and not so beautiful) Atlanta cougars. It was a fun place for "Drinking Buddy" and myself to come to hang out at after checking out the hippie chicks at the Brandy House. These days I'm older and not single, so my cougar hunting days are over. I'm happy and content with my non-cougar at home; but we do live behind Johnny's, so we have been in there together a few times and had some great laughs at the cougars and the cubs trying to pick them up. I wonder if I ever looked that young and stupid; I'm sure I did. Besides all the talk about cougars, I'll say Johnny's is ok place to hang out. I've been there several times for happy hour and a few times at night and have always enjoyed great service from the staff there. The drinks are always poured heavily, which is a good thing in my book. Plus, I once even ate a hamburger there which turned out to be one of the best I've had in Atlanta. The only thing I really hate about Johnny's is the smoking. As an ex-smoker it is very hard for me to go into an establishment that allows smoking. I wish we'd go to a statewide ban on smoking in public places. I know that smokers don't want to hear that, but when I smoked and went to bars that didn't allow smoking because of a county law I bitched and moaned about it too and finally accepted it and realized it wasn't so difficult to walk outside to take a drag. Hell, the fresh air did me good. To conclude it's a great place to come and hang out with friends, get a strong drink, pick yourself up an older woman or younger man, or just let yourself go and have a good time. Unique bar for dancing for all ages. If you get there before 9 PM, there's no cover. Starting a 9 PM there is a $5 cover. Sometime around 11 PM a line forms outside (it's pretty crowded by then) and the cover goes up to $20. You can order food and drinks are reasonably priced for the area. I love Johnny's! Tinsel is my favorite bartender but I haven't been by in a month or two. She always makes me great cocktails when I get the bartenders curse and can't decide what to order. If you're in a younger age group go on Sunday night, it's the only time I go to see Tinsel and it's like our unofficial industry night there. The shots are huge (more like a double) and the drinks and crazy strong. The music is always thumping and dance floor is packed with dancers and people having a good time. I usually get thrown around the dance floor when the DJ spins Madonna and he never disappoints with his sets. Always classic music, always plays music for everyone. Nothing rap-nothing trap-step-dub step whatever they call it 'house music' which us incredibly refreshing. What can I say? I'm an old soul. It's not REALLY cougar town if you go later than 5:30, hit up the hideaway around 11, it's past their bed time and the party is typically just getting started. Amen read more

Ultimate favorite spot during my Atlanta trip. It's one of those places you absolutely must visit when in Atlanta. It's a local bar that's dimly lit with red lights inside and... A DANCE FLOOR! It doesn't end there, Sunday nights they have a live band (with a saxophone, cause who doesn't like the sound of a saxophone) playing jams that included songs like this is how we do it and no diggity. The real best part - this place has no boundaries when it came to the crowd on the dance floor. You got people of all ages (20s-60s?) and ethnicity. Love it! It was like I had found the hidden peace zone after the harsh racism I noticed out with my interracial group of friends the night before in downtown Atlanta. I look on this page and wonder, how have I not written a review for Johnny's yet? It's a neighborhood joint that's been around for quite some time and I'd put it as an Atlanta nightlife staple without thinking twice. Why? See below. ENERGY - the place is full of it every time that I come in. Sunday night? Hopping. Friday? Obviously hopping! Random weekdays? Hopping too! DRINKS - great drinks, never weak and served in proper glassware. FUN - you know you are in for a treat when you see bouncers wearing "Got Cougars?" Shirts. Sure, some say that us young folks ruin the place, but hey, we like it too! End of the day, come here to relive classic music on an old school dance floor and an unpretentious vibe. Definitely a dance club for the older crowd. We arrived almost 10, and there were already a lot of people. A couple of us left around 11:30, and there was a line out the door. I'd been curious about this place ever since reading David K's very entertaining review. Last night my curiosity was realized thanks to Lauren S picking this place for her farewell shindig :) Music was pretty good - mostly 70s, 80s, and 90s. And crowd was mostly people in their 40s, 50s, 60s, ... and some people at the bar looked like they were in their 70s. Seriously I saw a lot of grandpa-looking people. There wasn't just age diversity either. We saw some "trannies" too - I never heard that nickname before last night. They were dressed in work clothes too ... I thought trannies would dress more obvious but Todd P said trannies are different from drag queens :) I learn something every day from my Yelp friends :) Fun place for the older crowd, definitely very casual, and great for people watching. Smoking is permitted here. Cover is $5. Recommended parking is across the street - just be very careful when you cross the road. read more
