We got the secret code just minutes before our reservation tonight. The secret code via text was a fun word, ingénue. I thought it would be a number code or something, guess not. My science mind figured numbers for some reason for the code. It's not the red door, it's the black door with a ring doorbell on it. Green sign says no entry, for authorized personnel only! Someone will let you in, just tell them the door code. Down the stairs, a slight left and down the short hall to another gray door and then you have entered through the time machine. If you think you are in the wrong area, the you are in the right area. We are hopeful that the kitchen and Chef won't be the same as Mr. B's, upstairs. I'm not a great fan of Mr. B's Food. Trying to keep an open mind. Chef Johnny let us, he said the place used to be banquet center and before that 49 years ago was a gun shot range. Wow. I had no idea. I got a mojito, it sounds good. Started with the devilish good eggs with prosciutto on two of the four and a charcuterie with only cheese, freshly made sour dough and crackers. Then split beyond impossible meatballs, small kitchen sink salad. You can hear the old creaky floors from above. Cool jazz music in the background. Sidney Bichet is playing sister Kate at the moment. The music is fitting for the setting here. The deviled eggs were tasty, simple but good. There are no crackers, just the sour dough toast points. There's strawberry, honey mustard and spicy peanuts. The cheeses are good, then again few cheeses are ever bad. I would like really crunchy crackers, the bread isn't doing it for me, not carb worthy. This place gives you the sense of the roaring 20s, during prohibition, it's effectively cool down here. Who would think being in the basement could displace you for an hour or two into another era even. It's quite busy in here, that's a good sign. The kitchen sink salad was good, a light dressing, a great mix of veggies and so much of it in a small bowl too. The impossible meatballs were big, lots of gravy, reminded me a bit of the Swedish meatballs, but not quite so. It's made with an onion gravy. To be honest, I did not know that this was a speakeasy until I saw it. We were wandering around Main Street trying to find it. Finally, we found the place. The place was so quaint and gave me the jazzy vibe. They had so many cool drinks. The drinks we had were all delicious. We also got some late night snacks as well. Went to Johnny's for a second time and, while the drinks were good, I will never go back due to their business practices. Apparently, our server must've thought the tip I gave her (17%) wasn't good enough, even though her service was very slow, so she added herself some extra tip (25%). I've attached pictures of my receipt (I kept the copy and wrote down the tip I had included) and the charge on my credit card. Total should've been $37, but I was charged $39.80. Really cool place! Some friends suggested we try it and we were planning to go for an after dinner drink. We saw someone knocking on the back door and were lucky enough to follow them in. We didn't have a reservation but they gave us cards to plan ahead for next time. I guess we were lucky to get in because it looks like you usually need to text and find out a code to get in! It was a fun experience. The place is hidden in the back of their kitchen I believe. The decor is interesting. The cocktails looked awesome. We got to start with a little sample of their sangria. The presentation looked great on other drinks. We saw some with jasmine balloons, some on fire, all kinds of fun stuff. We ended up getting nitro ice cream that was spiked. It's so sad that covid ruined Johnny's. We went two days ago and it was apparent that they were understaffed. The waitress wasn't very friendly and she wasn't knowledgable about the menu either. Our drinks took an hour to arrive, we were rushed to order, and our food took about that long too. We did not like the food at all. I ordered the pad thai, which came with raw bean sprouts (can cause poisoning). I removed them thinking the dish would be good. I was mistaken. The loml ordered the salmon and wasn't a fan. The manager was apologetic and took care of us, but it was just such a terrible and draining experience. I love Johnny and I used to love Johnny's. He kept this part of the night a surprise and I was so glad he did. Located on the back side of Mr B's off busy Main Street, public pay parking. You get a number to text to make reservations. Part of the fun is the Mr B's staff pretending they don't know about Johnny's, but if you need help they will point out the door and ring doorbell for you. There are stairs to get to it, the main door is disguised. Inside is a trendy, dark, classy bar. Trendy drinks and classics, friendly polite staff. Trendy apps and fancy food. They have the smoker gear, and the round ice ball marker, and a highly skilled bar staff. We got to talk with the owner a little and the bartender a lot. When the new owner, a chef, bought Mr Bs he wanted fancy food but the customers resisted because Mr Bs has been there forever. Therefore he put in a classy bar downstairs with a separate identity and got to be fancy. This isn't cheap, and you wouldn't expect it to be, but it about 1/2 the price of a Jose Andres place for food and cocktails that about about 3/4 as good. The manager sent over a bottle of champagne for the table at this time. We were unable to get down there before midnight so the manager paid for our entire bill which included drinks and deserts. There are times you read about some of the attention seeking behavior that restaurants go through to get people in and then you take a bite of their food and you know that it is all fluff and no substance. The food comes out flavorless, there is no attention to detail, the service mediocre at best and when you get the bill you wonder what the hell you just spent $300 on. I am happy to say this is not one of those situations. I'm not going to lie, when I first heard you have to text a phone number to make a reservation and then on the day of your meal they will send you a secret code word and then you go to a secret door, my eyes rolled so hard and so fast it looked like I was doing a Marty Feldman impression. There is no way anything can be worth all this hassle, right???? WRONG!!! It was worth every bit of it and in fact only added to the experience further. I think I'm going to write this review in sequential order to capture a moment by moment experience. I'm not going to give away the location of the door because I think enjoying the full process of discovering it is part of the fun. Once you give the secret word (for you Always Sunny fans, it's not, I repeat it's not OOOOOORRRRRGGGGGYYYY) you going down stairs, through the basement kitchen/storage area and through a disguised entrance that leads into the restaurant. Once again I'm not going to give away too many details on the entry process to keep the mystique alive even if it is temporary. Upon entering the restaurant, you're immediately greeted by (a photo) of Miles Davis and it's the perfect first impression for the secret, jazzy feel to the place. A combination of edison bulbs and candles keep the the rooms softly lit but still dark, guests at distant tables were nothing more than moving shadows, at closer tables ghostly visages laughing and drinking and eating. Aesthetically, it is an absolute feast for the eyes. Dark woods, classic furniture, stone walls left exposed add to the mysterious feel. We decided to sit at the high top so we could have better view of the restaurant and the bar area. The drinks we ordered were nothing short of spectacular. They looked beautiful, tasted amazing, and actually had enough alcohol in it so you could feel it. Watching the bartender make our drinks was a great show. We decided to order a bunch of dishes and share them among us, like a family style dinner. We started with the Lump Crab Napolean. I find working with seafood is always a tricky experience, especially lobster, crab, scallops etc. I like a little char to it because texture is big thing in my world in dealing with food. Although the lobster was charred by any means, the combination of the avocado, lobster, and the vinaigrette gave the dish a great texture and flavor. Next on the list was the Lobster Mac and coming from a person who does not especially like mac of any kind, this was delicious. It was creamy, and the bisque sauce took the flavors to all different levels. It was so well balanced between creamy and dense that it perfectly satisfying on many levels. I couldn't imagine that being topped and then the peanut encrusted lamb chops with miso sake souffle just came in yelled "G5!" and the Lobster Mac responded with a sad, "you sunk my battleship." This was my favorite dish of the night without question. Perfectly cooked and the peanut crust was a combination I would never have thought would be good together but damn, brilliant! The real joy though was the souffle. I'm not sure what miso sake is, I don't know if I will ever run into it again, but wow. Just wow. So light, fluffy and yummy! It was like a little dessert to cleanse the palate before the next dish. The encrusted beef medallion was next and I honestly wish we had ordered this before the lamb. I know this was delicious but following the lamb, this had no chance and this is an absolutely a travesty because it is such a good dish. I'm telling you, you won't be disappointed if you order this. Finally for dessert, we had the blueberry creme brulee. Now I'm going to be frank with you, I might not be a connoisseur of many things in life, but creme brulee's is something I could probably get a doctorate in. This one was so well made and the blueberries was such a nice touch. From the minute my spoon cracked that perfectly caramelized shell to every heavenly bite, I was actually angry I was forced to share this with someone else. I will have to sneak back here and have it again all to myself... bwhaahahahhahahahahhaa (evil laughter and twirling of mustache ensues at this point of the story). I can't recommend this experience enough and I can only hope they change their menu regularly so I can have an entirely new experience. read more

I plan dates for people for a living & that was my first introduction to Johnny's. I decided to go here for my birthday and they were able to get me and my friends in with no problem. This was our first time to Johnny's, which is located in the basement of what appeared to be a random building. The entrance for the restaurant was hard to find, which I think is intentional. One of the cooks was outside taking a break when he noticed us walking around with a confused look on our faces. He graciously helped us find our way! So a big thanks! The entrance is actually a cooler door, which is clever. Once you enter through this door, you are greeted by a hostess who seemed overwhelmed. We had a reservation and confirmed time for dinner, which didn't seem to matter. We, along with several others waited to be seated. For us, it was at least 30 minutes, which was frustrating, but we waited. The server eventually greeted us and was also overwhelmed. They were obviously busy, but it was a Saturday night so you would think that they would be prepared? Our table for two was small and cramped. It felt as if our table was added at the last minute to accommodate more people, but it didn't really fit the space very well. As our night progressed, the service improved, which was the only positive experience of the night. The menu was interesting, but the food was average at best and a bit overpriced. I've been here twice so far but if I could give zero stars I would. Went this past Saturday and the place was in SHAMBLES. I had made a reservation the same day but should have known something was amiss when it took hours to hear back from Johnnys if my reservation timing was confirmed or not. My reservation did end up getting confirmed a few hours prior to the reservation time so I assumed all was well... think again. We showed up a few minutes late as I rang the doorbell and we found out it was not working (and it is a ring doorbell which should be high tech). After lingering outside a few minutes we were taken inside by someone who told us to wait right there in the entrance which was super hot as I believe it's right next to the kitchen and someone kept coming in and out which was awkward with 5 people standing right there. Then, we finally made it downstairs. My first glimpse of the basement was of 8-10 people crowded near the bathroom area, waiting on their tables. Someone was "managing" the area with an iPad but she appeared to have no idea what was going on nor any remote sense of urgency. I finally advised her it was 9:30 and our reservation had been at 9pm. She stared at me as if I was an alien and told me it was going to be a few more minutes and brushed me off. I was flabbergasted- no apology whatsoever. Then, some bartender came by and gave the people waiting still for their seats a random shot- there was minimal explanation of what it was so I decided to forgo the mystery shot even though at this point I was so thirty and hot from standing in the crowded waiting area. Finally 10 min later I went back to the lady with the iPad and asked her how many more minutes as it now was 9:45 and my reservation was for 9. She told me, a few more minutes and then it finally appeared someone was cleaning off a table for us to sit at. Again no apology or explanation for why we were being seated so late (our party was only 3 people too). Once we sat down it took about 10 min just to get water and another 10-15 min for our waitress to appear to take our drinks. She also appeared as confused as the hostess with the iPad. My friend wanted an ice cream drink and she said they didn't have any ice cream in it- as soon as she said this my friend and my group all looked at each other - how does a nitrogen ice cream shot not have ice cream! We didn't get an explanation- we then tried to order something simple off the menu after that. I got the rose 1999 cocktail drink and there was no dry ice in it!!!! By the time our waitress brought the drinks over it appeared the ice had evaporated or melted into think air! I could not believe it! Then she took off again and disappeared for another 20 min! My friend asked her when she finally materialized If some food was on the menu that he could order she said the entree he wanted was out! When he finally got his food he said it was not good at all! Even the table next to us had also waited for their food and drinks for awhile. I am not sure if johnnys is having hiring / staff / training issues but there clearly are so many issues that need to be fixed. At some point I think Johnny himself came over to ask how things were and none of us could muster up the energy to talk about our horrific service and experience. I understand having a busy night but do not promise a reservation, honor it an HOUR later, then follow up with abysmal service and terribly crafted drinks and food. What really bothered me though most of all was the unprofessionalism experienced with the delay in our reservation and the lack of concern or willingness to make it right to us as guests and zero apology. I will not be back as this total experience was sub par and awful. It may be better to go on a weeknight when it is "not so busy" but I'd avoid this place altogether. My husband and I are both unique cocktail enthusiasts and don't mind driving for a good toddy. I made the reservation and we are both so happy we did. We showed up a little early (didn't know about Friday night traffic parking etc) and had a pre date night toddy at Alchemi first. Absolutely great first round. Then through the kitchen and down the stairs we went. The whole Speakeasy history and having to have a password made it even better. We each had 2 different drinks and they were all amazing. My husband is a Bourbon Snob and enjoyed his smoked and then on the rocks Rye. I had a Gin aloe tonic and a wonderful lavender gin. Both perfectly balanced. The food choices were very well balanced, you could find whatever you liked. My husband had the Korean short ribs and I had the salad with fabulous heirloom tomatoes. Very cool place, made our reservation via text, arrived at the designated place with our password to get in. It is very dark inside so be prepared to use your flashlight on your phone to read the menu. Had scouted out the menu online beforehand but was a little disappointed that the menu was a little different when we got there. A couple of the thing we had planned on ordering were not on this menu. Not a huge deal, but keeping the online menu current to avoid customer disappointment should be someone's job there. Our waiter was very good, explained all the drinks & food, was very attentive and made our dinner very enjoyable. Definitely a fun experience, worth a special night out.
