WOW! The 2 two things I tried were oustanding! The fried ravioli was delicious & that marinara sauce was to die for. The godfather sandwich was amaazzzing! It is definitely one of my top 5 sandwiches in NYC. The sandwich doesn't look anything special, but when you eat it you will be amazed! There was so much different delicious flavors at every bite: savory, sweet, spicy, tangy. It was a party in my mouth! I make happy sounds whenever I eat delicious foods & I was making too much of that. I also kept saying "jesus christ this is one delicious sandwich"! The cool thing is that u can tell them how to season the sandwich. I asked for the red pepper tomato concoction, pesto, basil, mayo, black pepper, frated parmesan cheese, white vinegar, balsamic glaze. That combo seasoning made that sandwich even more delicious! I've lived in the area for many many years and never tried John's deli. Decided to come here and pick up some sandwiches. They have a big menu so it's overwhelming. I ordered The Godfather and a hot roast beef sandwich (forgot the name). The Godfather wasn't bad but nothing special about it. The roast beef sandwich was really bland, this could just be a normal thing because I've had other roast beef where it's also bland. If I ever make it back here again I'd love to try their hot foods instead of another sandwich. read more

I have been coming here since I was in high school. Yes, they do have great sandwiches but their other food items are quite tasty too. I usually get the breaded chicken cut up over an order of large fries that is then smothered in marinara sauce. Consistency is one of their positives because my recent order tasted exactly as it did when I was in high school. The price is also pretty much the same. I would not recommend going here in the afternoon when school is in session because it will be full of high school students but lunch in the summertime would be a good idea. read more

Boy, Has this place gone downhill.. did the original owners die Because that's one Mötley Crüe behind the counter so I'm really cheap roast beef unlike the quality it was 20 years ago.. I don't usually get to this part of Brooklyn, but when i do i know where I'm eating! If you see a deli that has been in existence since the 60s you don't have to be a genius to know it's good.. Great selection. Italian run and owned. Small but real. Throwback. Hilarious names for their heroes. The chicken, meatball, shrimp, eggplant parmigiana heroes are unbelievable! I know it's not quite what it was in the heyday of the New York deli, but let's face it..those days are gone for the most part. WHERE DO I START? (1) I waited 20 min for an order that ONLY needed to be placed in a take out container. I ordered from their hot displayed already cooked food! (2) Chicken was RAW PINK (see photo)! Decided to try this place out with my family. One of their cooks/employees suggested that I get their roast beef sandwich. This is primarily due to it being one of their most popular dishes. I got 3 orders of their hero roast beef sandwiches along with just 1 roll. I also ordered some french fries and a pickle. The order came out to be around $50 which I found to be pretty hefty. After I got my food, they said I didn't pay for one of the sandwiches which didn't make sense to me. I don't know what the cashier was doing but it turned out that half the things I told her came in one ear and came out the other. I even specifically told her that I don't want gravy on 2 of the sandwiches but turned out that I got it on all of them. The sandwiches in general made me pretty full. I did feel tho, however, that the roast beef was quiet cold. Maybe it was the gravy I didn't order to begin with. I will acknowledge their amazing french fries though. I hadn't come here in years but I remember this being a great spot for roast beef and Italian deli. They redid the place inside and out. The front which was I believe had Bench seating on the street under umbrella or basic awning is now an extension of the inside. Which is better because it's air conditioned and tvs to watch. The order counter is the same. The counter lady was nice and knew her stuff! I would say "I'll have a rice ball" she would ask what kind and if I wanted it with parmed with ricotta. Umm yesss !!! I loved it.. ended up ordering $40 worth of food! 1 roast beef with gravy and onions on roll and one chicken cutlet with mutz & sautéed broccoli on roll. 1 order of mozz sticks, 1 rice ball especial & 2 bottle sodas. Can I say that I am in love? This place has the best roast beef sandwich EVER it was SO good that after I tried it I went back to get another one for my husband to go. Service is friendly and fast so it makes for pleasant ordering. If you get the roast beef, which is what they are known for, get the works. I've been making "hot roast beef" sandwiches in my personal kitchen for years, so I don't usually order them out. I did today, based on the prior reviews here mentioning John's creation. First off, I was really impressed that the roast beef was still in roast form, and sliced to order! I don't even do that at home. Then, the sandwich was assembled, topped in cheese, and slid into a hot oven to achieve a melty, crunchy goodness factor that gave it texture and body. Once done and removed from the oven, the sandwich artist gingerly lifted the sliced beef, and inserted some cooked down onions and gravy amongst the slices.. While it may not seem a big deal, the gravy works it's way INTO the beef this way, akin to the quick gravy dip method I personally use. The results are a sandwich with it all.. Tender beef, hot dropping gravy, and oozing mozzarella cheese accompanied by a a roll with some crunch in every bite.. Highly recommended.. Wish they had some seating available tho.. read more

The cold deli is always fresh, sliced just right, and the service is fast. Hot deli is limited to daily specials. I love their fried breaded raviolis. My favorite part is their wall of celebrities who visited, took pictures with owners, and autographed the portraits from cast of Sopranos to former and current politicians. I stop at John's deli at 8:40 in the morning. I was working and I needed to eat something to keep going for the rest of the morning. The place is very clean. The staff seem nice but they keep to themselves. I order sunny-side up, home-fry, sausages, toast and a cup of coffee. They asked me if I was staying to eat or leaving, I said staying. My food was served on a plastic plates, plastic fork and paper cups for the coffee. My toast was wrapped-up in aluminum foil. They call me from the counter to come pick up my food. The eggs were not done properly, they were gooey and mushy. The potatoes were orange cold and hard. The sausages was warm and the coffee was OK. The toast had on way too much butter. yuck. The food was so bad that I was not even able to eat half of it. I ended up throwing it away. I took the coffee. Very disappointed. read more
