Given that John's Fish & Chips has been around for more than 40 years, I figured that I should give it a shot since I was in the area anyway. We showed up around 7:00 on a Friday night and the joint seemed completely swamped by take-out and delivery orders, which meant that it took a little while to get a table. The service was otherwise really efficient and friendly, though. I decided to stick with the tried-and-true by ordering the Battered Haddock with Coleslaw and Fries. The food arrived about 15 minutes later and it's solid. Nothing on the plate particularly blew me away, but I definitely enjoyed my meal and everything was very well prepared. I supposed my one complaint would be the lack of seasoning on both the fish and the fries, as both suffered from a kind of blandness that was admittedly alleviated by the tasty tartar sauce and malt vinegar. The breading on the fish was also just a little thicker and more dense than I might've preferred, too. Such welcoming service and amazing food. I went in a wee bit late at 3:05 but was delighted to have been charged the amazing lunchtime price of $18. Being Scottish I know my fish n chips and this did not disappoint. It was deliciously crisp, not too stodgy at all, and the service by the young lady was really really friendly. This place was packed when I went in, I will admit it did take a fair bit of time to even be agknoweldged but once I was I was pleasantly suprised, the waitress was extremely hospitable and pleasant. The food was delicious, the portions were good and I found there wasn't too much batter on the fish. The prices were very competitive as well, for 3 meals I paid less then 2 and an extra fish. Small venue may make dining in a bit difficult and the parking is not the greatest but the food and service more then makes up for it I highly recommend this cozy little place to anyone looking for delicious and affordable fish n chips read more

I have been going to John's for 20+ years now and it just continues to get better. It is a family run restaurant specializing in seafood. The staff is friendly, and the service is quick. You can order your fish grilled or with batter. Extra lemon is always available. The portions are generous and you can take home with you what you don't finish. The pies are yummy too. My favourite meal is the seafood platter. If you prefer, you can call ahead and take-out, although the fish is not quite hot enough for me once I get home. Closed on Sundays and Mondays. It is a fairly small restaurant so get there early on Fridays and Saturdays. Enjoy! read more

It's a nice little vibe, worth checking out if you are in the market for some lighter fare. The meals are good and the prices are reasonable. A quaint little local spot, I just moved to this area a couple of months ago and had my first try of this place recently. The service was super friendly and it was quick, no complaints there. I got the battered haddock and fries. They were good, I can say I've had much worse, but I have also had much better, so middle of the road stars. I read reviews all the time to help decide if I should try out the food Reviews about johns are pretty consistent I had take out and the food was good not a lot of fries tho I noticed a comment from a customer that was unfair and probably an honest error if at all on the server it was about the credit machine on 18 percent tip I know how these machines operate customers have full access and can set the tip amount at any time as they please. I love John's! Serving size is always huge and you get good value for your money. I usually get the haddock with chips and coleslaw. Service is always fast and excellent. Sometimes the chips may be soggy or overcooked but forgivable. Another one point less is that their tartar sauce is not homemade. I've been coming to John's for about 10 years now. The halibut and chips is the best I've ever had. Since I found this place, I've tried the battered fish at every other local fish and chips place, and a few restaurants too, and I've never tasted better. The servers and chefs are awesome and thoughtful too. I used to bring my grandfather (who could be quite difficult), and they always remembered him by name and made him feel like a VIP (which he really loved). It's very small, but the decor is really cute and seaside-esque. The atmosphere is casual, and easy-going, but everything is clean and well maintained. I live in the area and this is my go-to fish and chips place. I've been here a few times now, and the service has always been exceptionally friendly. The past time that I was here for dinner we had a great conversation with the waitress, she is the daughter of the owner who runs the place along with other members of the family. This place has several awards on the wall and deservedly so. It makes me happy that the fish is battered lightly and NOT greasy at all. I seriously hate over battered and greasy fish. The people who I dined with had the grilled fish which I usually would not order at a fish n chips place but it looked excellent and they loved it so I'm going to try it next time. The calamari was also delicious and I really enjoyed how the coleslaw was not drenched in mayo like you usually find at fish n chip places, but was much lighter and marinated in what seems like vinegar. I really enjoyed it. They have several different options for sides like rice and salad so you can really get a lighter meal here! Our waitress suggested us the baklava that is made in house by her husband for dessert, which was a non traditional take- instead of being made with a phyllo pastry it was almost like thin layers of sponge cake instead! Based on Yelp reviews my gal and I tracked down John's F&C for a Friday night fish fry. My expectations were wetted by the reviews and being a non-professional cook I admit my bar is usually set pretty high. In other words if it's not better than what I can cook there's no thumbs up. I liked the setting and the location was easy enough to find; the inside was what I'd expect for a F&C restaurant. Nautical theme suited the place. Washrooms were smelly and old and could use a good cleaning. Ordered the haddock and chips that they are famous for and a glass of chardonnay from Niagara. Waitress was very friendly and helpful. Had the breaded haddock as the waitress suggested if was better than the batter. Service was fairly quick given the place was steady. Must admit I was not impressed with the presentation; the fish and fries were obviously frozen. The cole slaw was fresh but I didn't care for the vinegar dressing. I'd expect that a place as well reviewed as John's would serve up fresh cut fries and make the effort to go to Food Terminal and buy fresh fish. Don't waste your time looking for this place you'll probably get a better fish fry at your local pub. read more

Portion size has always been good and I find it to be a bit better than other fish places in the area.
