Johnson Hall is my favorite place to get coffee in the area! They drew me in way back when with their expertly made Lavender Lattes, ideal breakfast menu and customer service. They carry La Colombe and it is such a treat that I always bring friends with me! I usually stop in for one thing but always leave with several others so you know they have more to offer than just coffee. I about fell over when I realized this place opened in 2019 - I can't believe it took me until April 2022 to visit Johnson Hall. I was seeking a spot to post up with my laptop and do a few remote work calls. Feeling overly caffeinated, I opted out of their impressive coffee menu and ordered a ham, egg, and cheese on a croissant. I found a table near a sun soaked window and an electrical outlet. The sandwich was super tasty! They have a lot of smaller breakfast and lunch food items, including some visually appealing pastries. The sandwich was amazing! It was filling and hot, and the croissant was the stuff of dreams - buttery and flaky. As I had already had a sugary coffee from a different establishment, I was hopeful they would have some non-caffeinated drink options, but it was I really only saw hot chocolate, bottled water, Pellegrino, and orange juice. With their seasonal espresso beverages and selection of La Colombe, I will certainly save up my caffeine reserves for Johnson Hall next time. The building is beautiful. The inside is bright and spacious, and I love the local art lining the walls, some of which is purchasable. The staff was super friendly, and there were a surprising number of patrons for 10:30am on a Thursday. If you're looking for a quiet study or work space, however, this is not the spot. It's SUPER loud, and I made the mistake of picking this place from some Zoom calls. Between the music, the machines behind the bar, and chatter from other patrons, the noise was overstimulating. This spot has been on my list for awhile and I just now visited. I will say to start this place is BUSY it's super popular and seems to have a cult-ish following. Even as busy as they are they keep things moving, the line went fast and our coffee was made almost immediately and our food followed soon after. Their big hitters are their waffles and/or crepes. I wasn't planning on eating but could not say no to their waffles. My brother and I both got the cinnamon cream pecan and they were sooo good. Sweet but not sickenly so and they had candied pecans - so yummy! I got a Maple vanilla raf which means the milk, espresso, and flavor are all steamed together . The coffee was good but it wasn't super flavorful I will have to try something else next time. The inside is cute a decent amount of seating plus more outside ! Stopped in for a cup of Joe and I got the Iced Cinnamon Sweet Cream Latte. Yes... it was sooo good! I went there today and the person behind the counter was SO nice. I ordered an iced lavender latte and forgot to specify that I wanted almond milk. I told her I'd re-order since it was my fault and she gave it to me on the house which was super generous. The vibe here is great, the people are really nice, and the coffee tasted delicious. They do not have any gluten free pastries and it looks to be minimal parking, but I think there's some kind of parking I'm not seeing because more people were inside the cafe than there were spots for. Located inside an old historic building, the interior is re-done but in a way that still shows off the original beauty of the building. Came here about an hour after opening and stayed for about an hour. They have a steady flow of customers, with just a little wait, which is pretty commendable considering they only had 2 employees--one of whom mostly handled the cooking it seemed. Only the cook wore a mask. Wide open space, with seating, and there's some picnic benches outside if that's your thing. My almond milk latte was delivered to the table I was sitting at. They don't have real plates or mugs, everything is paper/plastic. Even though it was almond milk, the latte was creamy and hot (I saw the steam when I opened the lid!) but didn't have that scalded milk taste. My boyfriend and I visit Johnson Hall almost every weekend. The coffee is always great and atmosphere is very chill. They work with local arts and display art around the coffee shop that is up for purchase at anytime, which is awesome. Not to mention how kind their staff always is. I really enjoy adaptive reuse of old buildings that bring old and new sensibilities to the fore. When done well, they are both attractive and useful in ways unforeseen when the structure was first constructed, and bring new uses into old packages, calling the imagination of the new occupant forward in wonderment. The Johnson Hall Coffee House is a great example. It offers a shop unimagined in 1890 when it was build, yet as redesigned, it provides a functioning java house that could have existed at that time, but has emerged due to the evolving cultural affections of our modern day. It looks old, but isn't. It is a warm, light and airy high ceilinged first floor retail outlet for excellent coffee products and breakfast, brunch and lunch options. Although limited by the kitchen equipment available to prepare meals, it still provides enough variety to make a stop very worthwhile. I loved the large windows, dropped period lighting, white ceramic tile, wood plank floors, and the friendliness of the staff. I ordered an egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on croissant, with mug o' joe. It came in at about $8, and while ordering was at the counter in back, the servers brought the sandwich to my table. They would be wise to advertise the coffee roaster more dominantly both in the store and online, as I am sure I was not the only one curious about who produced the quality beans. The croissant was not quite French boulangerie, but still large and tasty enough to be satisfying. Still, the atmosphere here is the star of the show. It is a great place for both solitary and collective pleasures. read more
