A friend recommended Johnson's when we were looking for seafood to-go. We ordered the walleye meal with hush puppies and fries, a la carte shrimp and a la carte clam strips. The order was ready in about 15 minutes and was piping hot when we left. First off, the clam strips were delicious! There were good size clams and the portion was generous.. The tarter and bbq sauces were very good too; however they were not needed for the strips. The walleye and shrimp were equally good. Again, I liked the shrimp without sauce because the batter was tasty on its own. Even the fries were solid; that's the vessel I used to eat the tater and bbq sauces! The lake perch fingers and the clam strips were excellent! Good size portions. Not greasy. The onion rings were okay. I found the cauliflower too breast. I didn't care for the seafood sauce. This place used to be so good and had friendly workers. Placed an order for dinner and they did not pack either one of our salads, did not pack the extra tarter sauce that I ordered. Our perch were full of bones. I called to inquire about the salads and tarter sauce and the girl hung up on me. I called back and another girl answered and I asked if I was disconnected and she ignored the question and asked what I wanted. I asked if there was a problem with the salads since neither of our meals had them and she told me no and to come back to get them or she would take my name for next time. After getting our food and then being hung up on we will not be back. It is truly a shame that this place has gone downhill. read more

Really was a region staple. Most loved this place for fried seafood. New ownership has not taken well. Staff is almost rude and my walleye dinner was cold. The clam strips were rubbery and cold too. WHAT HAPPENED! Our Families have been buying johnson shrimp for nearly 50 yrs. When johnson family sold this last past year to Luke Oil co. I was ok quality is over! Well when they re-opened the GULF shrimp were big, good tasting, same recipie that johnson once used! As months have past; taste and quality has been terrible.No more FRESH GULF SHRIMP at 15.95 pd. Everybody is buying POPCORN size shrimp with rubbery texture, and no flavor. I am sorry, our family of 40 buying customers has come to an end! Tasty meaty jumbo shrimp, fried clams that aren't fishy, breaded fried zucchini that's not greasy.. we also have had the breaded fried mushrooms, they are also good. We come here every year to celebrate our wedding anniversary and birthdays. Definitely go to Johnson's. read more

Even though I am not a lover of seafood, my husband is and I read they have fried chicken, so we came here. This is not really an "eat-in" kinda place and I definitely recommend ordering ahead, if possible. Tonight I had the half fried chicken, fried cauliflower & a small coleslaw. Due to the desire to eata little healthier, I only consumed the wing and leg, but I did munch on the crust of the other 2 pieces. It was so crunchy and flavorful! The cauliflower tasted much better with a little ranch and mostly while it was still hot, but the coleslaw was creamy. Not a big fan of vinegary coleslaw so this was great. My husband really enjoyed his fried shrimp, too. The place was small but had a steady flow of customers. Many of them knew better than us and were just picking up their orders & paying. We ordered lightly battered jumbo shrimp, side of mushrooms, lake perch sandwich, and some other items. None of it was memorable and I personally didn't feel great after eating the shrimp. I was pretty hungry but I couldn't finish. Everything was super fried even the side of mushrooms. The coleslaw which wasn't great. I saw the cashier handle the frozen chicken patty with her bare hands before putting it in the fryer and that made me feel uncomfortable. I'm sad that it didn't live up to what people in the past have said. Unfortunately, I definitely will not come back again.. read more

My family & I have been coming to Johnsons since I was a small child. Needless to say, I don't understand how people can take the absolute best shrimp/fish carryout & just totally ruine it. I do believe that it has recently changed hands. About 2 months ago we had company & they asked about shrimp. We ordered 3 pounds of the original shrimp & 2 pounds of fried clams. Well, we understand that the original is breaded twice, I wasn't expecting what we received. The shrimp were smaller than what had gotten in the past even tho the price per pound went up. They were way over cooked & the size was made up of mostly breading. The clams had some normal size strips mixed in with at least half of these little hard bits. Akin to what Long Johns has in the bottom of its meals. Yuck!! I was embarrassed & upset because we spent well over $50. We thought maybe because it was Saturday , Friday may have cleaned them out. Benefit of the doubt. When I called to express my concern, The woman told me that is how they are always cooked & didn't even apologize. Today I go in and I order a half pound of clams & 2 chicken breasts ala carte. $11.72. Very disappointed as the chicken was a frozen boneless chicken breast that was no more a quartet inch thick. This will be another one of the great institutions that will be ruined by a new generation of penny wise and pound foolish owners!! Your customer service is non-existent. Lake Station doesn't have a lot of gems as far as restaurants go but, Johnson's Fish is one of them. Excellent gulf shrimp (always go with the lightly breaded) and even better side orders. The clam strips are great, the jalapeño poppers are great, and so are the chicken tenders and potato pancakes. I will agree with one other yelper in saying they can be pricy. I'll spend over $20.00 for a dinner and 2 side orders. I can spend that at Red Lobster for a small meal and a soda for myself and keep getting drink refills and cheddar biscuits brought to my table all night. read more

WOW, not what I expected. Ordered fried calamari that was over cooked along with fried mushrooms and cauliflower. Although, mushrooms and cauliflower wasn't bad, the sauce was the good part of the meal.Very disappointed thought I found a hidden gem, should've kept driving. Two stars was given for quickness of service but given that I should've known the food might've not been the best since calamari usually take longer than 5 mins. Ordered 2 shrimp 1lb orders and 1 shrimp dinner with a side of cole slaw and basket of fries on Saturday at 4:25 p.m. I should have taken the time to open the bag and check my complete order before leaving the establishment. I never had this problem before at Johnson's - always bragged about their outstanding shrimp taste and large shrimp portions with light breading. When I opened the bag after getting home, realized I was not given a basket of fries, or side of coleslaw with my order...I was bummed. Called back immediately and was referred to Kayla - she says she was the acting manager on duty. She did offer to add the coleslaw and fries if I came back to pick it up- not worth a 25 minute drive one way. After nearly 10 minutes of discussion on the order, she took my name and phone # and we agreed on a $7.50 credit on my next order from Johnson's. Now is where the fun begins.... I get a call 2 minutes later, and she says she will not be able to give me a credit on my next order, due to the fact that It was an up charge on my 1 lb shrimp dinner to have fries and coleslaw added- even though I didn't have the basket of fries or coleslaw with my dinner. She said the only thing she would offer me was a cup full of coleslaw and fries on my next order... I told her I should have just drove back and got a full refund, but half of the food was already gone. I will not go back to Johnson's. Very disappointed! Nick S. read more

Two stars because it is affordable. I was here on the first Friday in Lent and thought it would be jammed. Nope. Got 3 lake perch dinners. Got home (according to this approx. 3 miles) and everything was cold like it had been cooked way before we got there. I had called first and the person on the phone asked me when I wanted them done. This is the best battered shrimp, cod and perch in the area. I've been going here since I was a kid. I've gone to other places similar, but they were pricier and not as good. I love their unique cocktail sauce. Two things though, I wish they were open on Monday's and I love coleslaw but the recipe they use isn't that sweet, which how I like it. read more

I noticed in the last year that the place was sold to new owners since there's a new bunch of faces working there. I also noticed that their cole slaw isn't as good as it used to be; there's just something missing from it. It first I thought it was just me but after numerous meals there the cole slaw has a bland taste. I asked if they changed the recipe because it doesn't taste the same. The worker told me that it is the same recipe as always but that other customers were saying the same thing. Makes me think that when they changed hands they didn't get the same recipe that the old owners used. It is disappointing when a business changes hands and then goes downhill. read more

Been going here for 50 years. Always the same, GREAT. Tiny little house rolling out great seafood. Now I normally only eat a few different items but those are good. Lake perch, walleye, shrimp, chicken wings. The fries are decent. They have side salads that are sold. Carryout only but they do have a picnic table out front if the weather is nice. The only thing that tasted good was the scallops, but those gushed with water like Niagara Falls when I bit into them (they're sold by the pound). The quality has gone way down hill!
