Sometimes you eat something so delicious that you can't stop thinking about it. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it's magical. JoJo's is one of those places for me. Some friends were gushing about how good the ice cream here is, but I honestly wasn't expecting too much. Then I tried some samples, and I instantly perked up. They were good! It was tough to choose, but I went with the cayenne sea salt caramel. The sea salt caramel was everything you would expect and love, but the cayenne gave it an unexpected afterburn that somehow made the sweetness all the more delicious. It wasn't a combo I would have picked on my own, but it really worked. And it only got better the more I ate. Side note: they have an extra small size that's not on their display. It's about half the size of the smallest they have up, but it's still a generous amount of ice cream. For $4.25 you can get enough to make you very happy, but not feel like you've overindulged. Each order comes with a complimentary mini chocolate chip cookie. And it isn't just a random add-on. It is *good.* Like maybe they should rethink being an ice cream store and be a cookie store instead. They also have a gluten free version, which I didn't try but have been assured is also excellent. Tremendous ice cream. I don't really go out of ice cream often. My point of comparison is more basic delicious stuff like Foster's Freeze. While I've been to Salt and Straw I find it too douchy. Jojo's is delicous. Smooth in texture, creamy, icey. Not overloaded with sugar and intensity. 10/10 will hit this every time we go to Encinitas. It's perfect for post-Moonlight yum yum. read more

I'd been sleeping on JoJo's for 5 years since I moved here. It seemed nice, but just out of the way enough and ordinary-looking enough to just get repeatedly passed by for the other options with round-the-corner lines of people, or boba by the beach convenience. Man, what a mistake. Of all the places I've tried, this place is just... the best. It's not overly sweet, or overly creamy and it doesn't even taste like ordinary ice cream. It has a thicker, more layered consistency that I think if very satisfying and complex on your palette. The options here are numerous, and based on what I've tried, all pretty good, but- as a peanut butter guy I just feel like their peanut butter cup formula is top notch. It just has this thick but creamy texture, full of dark chocolate notes, freshly grounded and combined with a mystery ingredient of ... honey comb? What a combination. It was surprising (and sorry I spoiled it) but it just. Works. And now you can guiltfree *feel* like you're enjoying an overmuch ice cream cookie sandwich (looking at you, Baked Bear) with the free micro cookie as the JoJo patented 'cherry on top'. Great stuff. Oh yeah, and JoJo's won't flex its ingredient profile anywhere in plain sight, but I went to their website to try and figure out what's different- and it looks as if we've got a completely home grown encinitas local- completely fresh and organic ingredient list that really confirmed in my mind that this is tasting so refreshing and easy on my stomach because what they're putting in there is just high quality. JoJo's was really pleasant - AND they had vegan flavors! I got vegan mint chip in a kids cup and it came with free sprinkles (which were good by the way!!!!) and a free chocolate chip cookie. The vegan mint was very subtle. It had a hint of mint but nothing too overwhelming, and not too sweet either. More on the refreshing end. Delicious afternoon treat and a tasty experience. I am a total ice cream lover and can't believe I have never been here before. What a fantastic little place. You can try as many flavors as you want and the flavors are really interesting but not too out in left field. They still had the staples like vanilla and chocolate chip. The portion sizes are good and the prices are right in line with other high end ice cream shops. The best part is that every single order comes with a fresh out of the oven homemade chocolate chip cookie (which you can even get gluten free if you want) that is to die for. In comes in a little wax bag given at check out. The cookie was warm and the chocolate all melty - wow! I love ice cream but if you could just get the cookies I would be happy too. This is a tiny place so the line winds out the door but moves fast. There is no indoor seating but there are lots of tables and chairs in the courtyard in front of it. When I brought it up, it felt like the more senior worker (she was on the register initially) knew what had happened but she didn't proactively say anything. The other worker there looked into it and realized they had charged me for 5 cups vs. 3. Not sure how that would happen but they processed the refund without any issues.
