The pros are everything else. it is the best brewery in the city. done. so they have the best beers. and the tap room is a solid mix of social, dock, steel and bio genetic workers than make up the neighborhood. This taphouse has hands down the best food I've ever had at a tap house. Also the beer is sweet. The french fries are amazing..... Today I went from lunch on a Sunday and had a steak with shrimp sandwich for $9 which came with like a pound of fries. Service was awesome. Stopped in here yesterday for a pre-sailing beer or two. Had the Jolly Roger Ale and the IPA- both were delicious. JR was at 9% ABV and the IPA at 7.2%. Both pretty strong but again- both very delicious. Didn't order food but saw lots coming out- the food looked great. The Onion Rings are huge and the table near us seemed to be enjoying them very much. One thing that I LOVE about this place is the prices of the beer- so reasonable. Too many places charge 6 or 7 bucks for beers these days. Not this place- they serve 20oz Imperial Pints for $4.50. I'll be back for more of their delicious and reasonably priced brews. read more

This place is small (like 40 seats) and always packed! It got a little awkward after the second try but I didn't give up... The third time... is a charm! I finally got in! Woot! Imperial and Jolly Rogers Christmas Ale are 2 of my favorite ales from Seattle! So, I went to the brewery to pay my respect... I mean get shit-faced! First, let me tell you about the ambiance... The bar itself is ordinary looking. Just your typical neighborhood pub but relaxing! They were listening to Dj Krush's album... sweet! My kind of tunes! So, I proceeded to get the sampler (under $9)... I'm in hop heaven! 5 different ales that will definitely satisfy a beer drinker! I'm not going to review the ales because I will take forever! But, I must say... I will never convert to wine! Although, they have it on the menu... Posh friendly! What! Just kidding! Anyway, so I also tried their clams and mussels appetizers (under $10)... I went here three times before I could finally sit down to eat/drink. The new location is larger, however they don't use the space they have. It's like they took their old set up and put it in a larger facility. Tables are SSPPPPREEEAAAADDDD out! If they pushed tables a bit closer together and added more tables, this place would be twice as busy and making more money. It's like they ran out of money to complete the new revamp... Moving forward...I got the mini burgers..They were dry. They were ok. The fries were good. Nothing I can't get elsewhere. I guess people come for the beer and the food is an after thought. If you like different styles of beers, or have a group that have varied tastes, this place is great. I was in Ballard today It has been a long time since I have been back and was excited to visit the new location. There was no wait for a seat even though the place seemed packed. We ordered the cheese and onion burger sliders, the mahi sliders, a side of fries and the spinach salad......I had a friend arive late, she ordered the spreaders. Our food was awesome, our beer was awesome, all except for the spreads. The menu states that you get three different spreads, we recieved two, and a double portion of ganoush. The server exclaimed that they had run out of the third spread last night, which would have been helpful to know when ordering.....No one enjoyed the dish so we sked for it to be removed from the bill and it was, but again, it would have been nice to be informed ahead of time. Beer was good, the rest of the food was good but the noise level was unbearable. I had not seen my friend for a long while but we were unable to talk because the music was too loud and the accoustics of the place are really bad. As much as I love the old location and the beer and food I most likely will not visit this place again. So 4 stars for service beer and food, minus one for new location and not being able to hear conversation. read more

I must say, I rarely write negative reviews. In this case, it wasn't the service (really quite good). The food was what I would call mediocre pub-grub (rings were good, fries were terrible). The real problem was the beer. At this point I am about half way through my quest to try a sampler at every brewery in greater Seattle, and this place has the worst beer in town. If you are the owner, I'd say get a new brewmaster. If you are a server there, I hope this review doesn't hurt your income too much. If you are a beer enthusiast, you should definitely go elsewhere. This is the one place that I had a hard time selecting which beer to order a pint of after the sampler because none of them were good enough to drink more of. The best brewery in Seattle showcases it's well-crafted brews and equally impactful dishes in a cozy carribean pirate-themed taphouse adjacent to the brewery in Ballard. The menu features wonderful dinner selections, but do not pass up on the onion rings or the best fried pickles around. The 'lil jollies are a great deal to fill you up and off-set the numerous pints you just put away. It's a small environment, so don't be shocked--but keeping it small keeps it managable and keeps the crowds from getting too out of control. There are a number of regulars in there at any given time, so don't be put off by the regular bantar between the regular and the staff. The staff is very personable! The beers Maritime Pacific crafts are all-world. The authentic English cask--if working--has different beers every week. If you are looking for a place to grab a seat with a couple friends, have a few excellent beers and wonderful food, DO NOT pass up this option. On my first visit, so many things went in the tap room's favor: * We were greeted immediately and put on a list for a table, while at the same time offered a beer while waiting. *The Jolly Roger was on tap! *We milled around talking while waiting for a table to open. Probably took 30 minutes, which is no big deal. I walked in on a tuesday afternoon and although the place was relatively empty got weird stares from the serving staff upon sitting at the bar. Nonetheless the service was quick from the bartender who presented me with a drinks menu and food menu. Having heard so much about the food i tempted myself to try the Lily Jolly Royals and get an IPA to quench my thirst. I must say i made the mistake of ordering the habanero sauce...wow what a kick. It took them almost 15 minutes to get my little sandwiches, which didn't seem bad to me as I was watching the Mariners - Twins game on the TV. The Royals...delectable, the sauce...spiiiicy lol (learned my lesson) and the IPA...strong but smooth enough of a kick to settle me down. Definitely a spot to go with friends and most of the complaints about the noise level...dually noted, it does seem to bring in a rowdy crowd. Then again, friends having a good time w/ pints...calls for a bit of noise if you ask me. Worth a 2nd visit for sure. The Jolly Roger used to be one of my favorite restaurants, but no more. The last few visits have been disappointing, enough that I don't have much desire to return. Service used to be good, if not great, but there seems to be an increased indifference, especially when the bartender has to take a table or two. The food is no longer anything to rave about, and that makes me so sad! The beer itself is about the same as usual, but it does take longer to actually get one, and we never did get asked if we wanted a second. It felt like we were interfering in the bartender's day, and it wasn't even very busy. The loud, recorded music remains, unfortunately. In warm weather, the noise can be avoided by sitting outside. But that has a definite downside. For months, I've noticed a persistent, foul odor outside, probably emanating from one of the three green dumpsters nearby. It stinks of rotten chicken or shellfish, and it's hard to ignore while sitting at the picnic tables. The pub's emergency exit is next to two of the dumpsters, so the odor wafts right in as workers come and go. If I eat or drink at the Jolly Roger again, I'll avoid that end of the restaurant. read more

Really good food! I've had the Lil' Jolly Combo burgers with habanero dipping sauce several times, and they are excellent. I ordered the clam bake once, and the only complaint I can think of is that it needed a big piece of bread with it so I could soak up the delicious broth that was left after the clams and mussels were gone. Unfortunately, I only get to come here on my lunch hour during work days, so I've only ever had a sip of someone else's beer. Yes, I did visit Jolly Roger Taproom and didn't order a beer. Cue eyebrow-lifting. After a long afternoon of moving we dropped off our U-HAUL and walked across the street for some grub. Oh grub, if only you were good. Alas, you were not. I ordered the beef sliders with a side of fries. Sliders were soggy, buns were WAY sweet, tasted like pastry dough. Fries were short, thin, tasteless, and very crispy, I had to use a fork and dip them in my ketchup. I also ordered a side of pickled fries which were surprisingly tasty. They came with a side of the house mustard. I enjoyed this dish. This place had some amazing fish n chips when we stopped in just as happy hour started. The boyfriend and I did fish and chips with beer and were stuffed by the time we finished. The fish was flaky, perfectly done, and fried well. I got the Clipper Gold Hefeweizen, which was awesome and slkghtly citrusy, as well as the Jolly ale on Nitro ($3 pints for happy hour!). Great little place adjoining the Maritime Brewery. Have been driving by here for years but have never stopped in until now. Cold delicious beers served with some great pub food. Their slider plates of hamburger, mahi mahi or oysters are really good. I had the oyster last night. 2 plump fried oysters on a soft bun with some shredded cabbage and a little sauce. 3 of these come on plate and are more than enough for a meal. The mahi sliders are equally as good and plenty, We also tried some smokers which are their onion rings, with a bit of a smokey flavor. Big and crunchy, eat them there while they are hot. Salad we shared was huge. Maritime Red tasty as usual. All of the above for just over 30 bucks. We had enough left over for another meal. We had pretty good service the place was busy and very noisy. Finally made it to the new Jolly Roger Taproom last weekend with a friend - definitely a mixed experience. No tables were available when we arrived (no biggie), so we headed over to the bar. The beer was tasty (of course), but we soon realized that it was freezing in the place. Not conducive to drinking beer! You could feel the AC blowing, even thought it was rainy and dreary outside. Weird. Maybe it was partly the decor - concrete floor, and fairly well-spaced tables. Were seated at a table fairly quickly. Our server was attentive and friendly, and helpful with food/beer recommendations. I ordered the Smoked Jalapeno Caesar salad (which was, as the server warned, HUGE). Fairly ordinary and not that impressive. I also ordered the Lil' Mahi's (mini fish sandwiches), which were the best thing about my visit to the Jolly Roger. They were delicious -- came with shredded cabbage and two excellent sauces. Yum. I'd highly recommend them. I'll probably go back to give it a second try, but wasn't super impressed with my first visit. The old spot seemed cozier and just seemed to have a better atmosphere. The new Jolly Roger Taproom raises Maritime into a class above any other in Seattle. Their brewing capacity has increased by almost four times and so has the space in the new brewpub. The new location is sleek and sophisticated without any loss of charm and the same menu favorites remain as well as dinner entrees like sirloin steak,smoked razor clams and cannelloni actually made from calamari and stuffed with sole. The beer is the same fantastic beer that Maritime has been putting out for years but the newest addition to the menu might be the best of all, deep fried bacon. Got the porter - pretty good. Nothing special. Got the Poutine (that's fries topped with gravy and cheese curds). I've had GREAT ones in Vancouver, BC. These were pretty forgettable. Also a veggie burger slider. Wow, that was a mistake. Generic veggie burger on what seemed like a biscuit. Waste of money. No character, flavor, or any kind of pizazz. From the sounds of it, I'm sure the meat ones are better, doubt they could be worse. We usually start with their hoppiest cask-conditioned ale, while we appraise the (oft-changing) menu. The same mission of excellence that is the hallmark of their brewery has influenced the fine offerings on the dinner menu. This is not your usual pub grub. I favor the smoked jalapeño Caesar salad, and my love opts for the spinach. Don't miss the jalapeño calamari. There is almost always a shellfish/seafood selection or three on the menu, and the Prawn Chiles Rellenos is a great choice. There are burgers and sliders and oyster creations. Anything that I specifically recommend here will possibly be gone the next time we go, but trust me in that you will be delighted by the current Chef's list on your visit. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, and a bespectacled Jim is always there, pulling pints, Dav ("Dahv") is a particularly favorite waitron. The Good- A great atmosphere and most importantly great beer. I'm a big fan of the Flagship Red but try the Islander Pale Ale and the Bosun's Porter too. The chairs and tables are comfortable enough and the decor is understated but works. There is a bit of a pirate ship/ old pub feel to the place. The menu is not large but they are giving effort to the food. Great variety of sliders. I tried the poutine but wasn't crazy about. There version has an onion based gravy that tadtes just like French onion soup and the cheese kind of got lost in it but you can tell they were aiming high and thats a good thing. The bartender took our food order and he was very patient, answered our questions, and offered advice on other Ballard brew pubs we could sample from. The great thing to is with the brewery attached to the taproom you just get the complete picture of how lovingly the take their craft. Always a good experience. The Bad- Limited on site and street parking but it's Seattle so what place doesn't have mediocre parking. If you go for the food and tack on the beer you may be a bit disappointed but try it the other way and it's a great spot to meet friends. read more

Went to the Jolly Roger last night and won't ever go back for food. I had a so so experience. I like what they are doing with the whole pirate theme in the dinning room and bar but I don't particularly like the way it was set up. It seems like there was a lot of unused space. With that being said the party of 3 I was in had to wait for a table on a Tuesday night. The beer there was good. Many choices of micro brews and the red and dark are decent but didn't knock my socks off. The food menu was over complicated and hard to read. My table ordered the Mahi sliders, normal sliders, oyster sliders, and fries. The sliders we're nothing special. Oyster sliders were over seasoned to the point where you can't taste the oysters. They had great vinegar based sauces for fish and chips but don't server fish and chips. I give the food a 2 out of 10 with potential to be a 7. The menu needs work. read more

The beer is excellent. The onion rings are the best I have ever eaten anywhere. The staff is friendly and attentive yet not annoyingly so. But... This was my first visit to the new location. It looks OK (the floor is as cool as the original), but it feels like someone tried to make a copy of the old Jolly Roger in a strip mall. The interior could benefit from some more art and cool sea/pirate stuff. What was worse was the noise. It's one of the noisiest bars/restaurants I've ever been in. It felt like sitting in an elementary gymnasium during a pep rally. On top of the noise of people bouncing around the place they added music at a pretty high volume and there were two TVs with sports on which just made the place seem even noisier. (The volume on the TVs was down, it was just visual noise.) The Jolly Roger is one of those situations where great food and staff is equally balanced with lousy atmosphere. On food and beer and staff alone I'd give them 5 stars. On atmosphere (because of the noise and sports TVs) I'd give them 1 star. read more
