Both my husband and I were asked to pay a $50 insurence "deposit" before standard cleanings. I have never been charged this so I contacted Delta Dental who explicitly confirmed to me that this is against their policy. Cleaning are always free - you should only pay deposits for other extra services after you get them. They also sneak in a $25 fluoride treatment without permission (which isn't covered by adult insurance). Fluoride is a treatment that legally requires patient permission. Even after explicitly declining it for my second visit and having it noted on my chart, they still billed me for it. Getting my refunds took weeks of annoying phone calls. On top of that, they never honored a promised $50 referral bonus, ghosting me whenever I brought it up. I won't be returning; a patient shouldn't have to constantly police their dentist's shady billing tactics.

It ended up being a root canal and a crown because of the vertical cracking of the tooth but at least it wasn't an implant!! And this is even crazier, the next week, a crown I have had for many years feel out in the sink I the morning while I was water flossing! I figured it would be no big deal and they could just re-cement it but nope--there was decay next to the gum and they had to clean it up and I needed another crown since the margins no longer match. Again, it was great that they were able to fit me in when I called that morning; and with my doctor, once again! They not only overcharged me for services that were capped by my insurance but their mismanagement of my account with a secondary lender caused my credit rating to plummet. If you have an HMO Dental Plan, they are prohibited from charging anything over the "Maximum Allowable Charges" that are set by their "capitation" agreement with the insurance company. I was overcharged by $3,388 for dental work and only found out because I spoke with the insurance company the OTHER time they tried to overcharge me. I only found out after demanding itemized receipts and comparing them with the fees on the Delta Dental website. Besides the issue with the outside lender, I have overpaid them $844.00 out of pocket and they refuse to pay the money back. I will be taking them to court but can only imagine how many more people they have done this to. If you have ever gone to Long Beach Smiles at 5555E. I just accepted this fact and paid what my bill said. After, I checked my insurance portal and the difference between what it said on my claim versus what they charged me was $349. I called an insurance agent to ask what went wrong, and he plainly stated that many dentists take advantage of people with HMO plans and that they should have known that the filling was covered by my insurance. However, he told me to give them the benefit of the doubt and try to get a refund directly from them. I called and told them my situation, and a staff member at West Coast said they would call me back about the issue. Shocker, they didn't! So I had to visit the office, get copies of my documents and scans, and file a grievance through my insurance. I finally got my refund, but DO NOT go here. I am young and have some free time to pursue these matters, but I can only imagine how many other vulnerable, busy, disadvantaged people they may have taken advantage of or lied to. Some of my emails throughout this ordeal say it is the patient's responsibility to know what their coverage is, and I get that to some extent, but it's plain knowledge that our healthcare system is broken.
