They didn't tell us the coffee was self-serve and when we inquired, the girl rudely told us to serve ourselves. 3. What an incredible little java gem! Pasadena always has something sweet up its sleeve every time I make the trip out here and the treats just keep getting better! Tucked away in an industrial warehouse zone, Jones is unsuspecting, unassuming and unpretentious. Its distance from Colorado Ave and Oldtown gives it character, and once you step inside (after finding parking whihc could be the only downfall), you can see that character is what Jones is all about. From the burlap sacks of grinds scaling the walls to the eclectic sitting area, complete with old, worn down furniture and mixed-matched seating options, to the very Savannah nights decor to the simple menu, Jones breathes human life. Its unapologetic, unwavering attitude for providing a unique coffee experience is truly admirable and I salute you, Jones, for bringing a humble ego to the sophisticated Pasadena streets. First off, I will never be returning to Jones Coffee Roasters Pasadena... This past Sunday, I woke up bright and early, made breakfast with my family, and then packed up to go hiking (exciting right? I know)... however, we had unfortunately run out of our usual supply of Groundworks (whole bean, either Peru, or Brazil... made in a french press), so we said... "Hey why not go to Jones? That'll be fun!" Boy, were we mistaken. I will have you know that I have been to Jones many times in the past, and although they have never had great customer service, I ALWAYS deal with it, and even leave a tip (which is well undeserved... ALWAYS). This time things took a turn for the worst of the worst, titanic style.... and no there was no Leo Dicap hanging in Jones, because like any other human being in their right mind... he goes where he is treated with respect... anywhere but Jones.... literally ANYWHERE... I bet you could get better customer service from a skid row drug dealer.... but I only know about coffee, so let's stay focused on that.... So my parents, my 4 dogs, and I all drive peacefully on over to Jones to get some delicious coffee, and then have a nice family hike. I enter the hipster/retro/artsy/confused building with my father, and what happens? Oh hey there little miss sassy talking to two guys who look like they just mugged an old lady.... yeah little miss sassypants shoots a disgusted look over at me and my father, and doesn't even have the decency to follow it up with a customer greeting... nope, nothing, but pure disgust. Little miss sassafras, I don't know your name, although I really wish I did so I could call you out even more right now... but luckily I did catch a glimpse of your terribly placed nose ring that shouts, "I'm an artist/independent/sing/songwriter/LA/barista and I don't care about anything" If you are curious to see who I am talking about, just look around for that nose ring, it'll find you. Anyways, we walk up to the counter, and the cashier seems to be rather nice, she greets us and us her, and then it all goes downhill. My father is a very standard man, so he orders a large drip, ok cool all good.... but you see, I have a solid background of 4 years working in the Coffee Business, as well as an array of knowledge of different worldly coffees through my travels.... so honestly, I like to shake things up a bit (like Bam Margera). So I place my order... "I'll take an iced red-eye please :)" with a smile, because I always smile because life is good and too short for sass. So the cashier says ok great. However, LMSP (little miss sassy pants), turns to me with that same disgusted look, and says "THAT'S A LOT OF CAFFEINE! THAT'S LIKE 6 SHOTS OF ESPRESSO!" Hard to explain to tone through this digital emotionless screen, but let me tell you, it was not a tone I would ever define as informative or kind... it was pure sass. Next I say, "No that's okay, I will be alright, thank you, :)," with another smile.... to which she sneeringly replies... "OK WHATEVER!!" YUP..... that is right... and you know what is worse? She gave me the whole ghetto hand to my face, like, "Talk to the hand cuz the face don't care!" Honestly, I would rather talk to your hand, because I can't stand your nose ring, lady. I don't care if you think you are hot and too cool, that is no excuse to give HORRIBLE customer service. Continuing on.... after this whole ghetto interaction... the cashier goes on to ask the nose ring emo-kid how to ring up A RED EYE. Here is a bit of common coffee knowledge you should probably know if you work in a coffee shop.... A red eye, is simply coffee with an add shot. I can't imagine that your POS setup is that difficult miss cashier lady. So nose ring comes over to help, and goes back to the bar, filled with 4 Grunge-looking baristas.... YUP... on ONE BAR!!! with probably two group-heads. Oh yeah, there are about 5 customers in the whole place.... so you need 5 employees on the floor? FOR WHAT?? Maybe so one of them can teach the others how to serve a customer, or how to make a simple drink. Anyways, after the cashier figures out her life, and how to ring up a coffee with an add shot... she says to me, "Don't worry about them, that's just a lot of coffee." OH IS IT REALLY?! Thank you genius, it's my first time in a coffee shop, so I'm really happy I have you hear to hold my hand and practically tell me I shouldn't order something, like I'm 5 years old and you're my mom and you're saying I can't have candy at the grocery store (PS it really isn't that much coffee). New review (10/2/2011): I had to change the rating of this coffee shop from three to two stars. My husband and I returned three more times since the first review. Two times thereafter, we once again received cool cappuccinos. On our third visit, I was determined to get my joe HOT. I emphasized to both the cashier and the barista, "Extra hot!" I wanted to be sure there was no confusion about my order. The barista acknowledged my request with a nod. He handed me the finished drink. I tasted with anticipation... but it was lukewarm. I handed him the cup and asked politely and patiently if he could make it hotter. He responded with a look of surprise, "If you wanted it that hot, then you should have said extra, EXTRA hot!" He then went on to explain the store's cool steamers and how the natural sugar in milk can burn with too high of temperature. His tone made it clear that he felt annoyed to have to educate an oaf like me about proper coffee temperature. At this point, my husband and I have lost interest in continuing any interaction with this man. What he doesn't know is I have traveled extensively throughout Italy and have had many cappuccinos; none were room temperature, much less cool. We left the store, vowing never to return. So why did I not give this shop a one star rating? Although the bad customer service affected my experience, the flavor of the cappuccinos all three times were good. I don't deny that I am still angry but I am always fair. Integrity first. Previous review (10/17/2010): My husband and I had cappuccinos here today for the first time. The first time I went to Jones coffee, I would've rated it a 5. The more times I go, the less I like this place. I appreciate small businesses. I do, but not when I feel cheated time after time. One time I came, I got charged $6 for an iced Aztec mocha. I can find a cheaper mocha at Intelligentsia or Urth Caffe. Now, I know you're thinking well don't come here if you're such a cheapie. I'm NOT. Today, I went to check out Wheel food Wednesday. I decided to get an iced nonfat mocha. They gave me a hot one. It was $3.50 for a small one. I asked for ice...they don't have to remake it, just a cup of ice. She told me that ice cost $1.25. Wtf?! What the bleep kind of water are they using?! I saw a girl giving a guy a plastic cup when he asked for cups for water. So the ice alone is $1.25? Are you kidding me?! I've been to Intelligentsia and Urth and asked for ice or ice water and they just gave it to me even when I offered to pay because I didn't want to appear cheap. They told me I didn't need to. Think what you want about me, but I think that's poor service to charge for ice. Will I be back? For Wheel food Wednesday, but not for the coffee. I visited Jones a few weeks ago on a Sunday because of the advertised music on Sundays. I had gone to Jones one other time when there was live music, food trucks, and artists, and I was not really impressed with the experience. I put that off to the special event and the crowd it drew. I have heard such good things about this establishment that I wanted to try it again. So a few Sunday's ago a friend and I went to check it out. There were no open seats and the band was not what we expected. I thought it was advertised as bluegrass, but this was mellow jazz. We ordered our drinks and two pastries and decided to check out the art while we waited for our drinks since there was no place to sit. We had eaten our pastries before drinks came, although it was very hard to determine when our drinks came. An iced coffee was called out which is what my friend ordered. We thought that was his but my Italian soda never came. Then I noticed at least two people go up and complain about their order. I was concerned we had taken someone else's iced coffee as my italian soda was still not to be seen. As it turned out those complaints were completely unrelated to my experience. I was giving the benefit of the doubt that they were backed up, but finally I had to ask. First we had to explain that we had been waiting a long time - this was not a drink we just ordered as we were first given as an explanation. Then they found the glass with the syrup in it stuck back in a corner. Then the three staff members had to discuss how this happened and whose fault it was, all while I am standing there. Then someone offered me a refund which I responded, "can I just get the drink?". The whole thing was embarrassing to me, the customer. By the end I wished I had just not said anything and left. When I did get my drink the only thing I wanted was to leave as quickly as possible. While I was waiting for my drink inititially, another customer was trying to find the creamers/milk/soy for his coffee. He tried to get the attention of staff, but in the end another customer told him where to find the creamers (which by the way are very nicely stored in a refrigerator for all to access). I find this unacceptable customer service. A couple of things that could be done to improve the customer experience: 1. Ask for names with the orders and call those out when ready so people clearly know when their order is ready. I know you want to set yourself apart from the chain coffeehouses, but there is a reason they all get names to attach to the orders. It works. 2. Don't assume that everyone knows the lay of the land. Not everyone who walks in is a regular. Staffs' job is to make everyone feel so comfortable they want to be regulars. read more

I would have never stoped in Pasadena if it wasn't for the coffee of Jones. We arrived right after they opened up and there was already a line of people waiting for their order. We chose a cappuccino and a regular black coffee. The cappuccino took a while but was served with just the right temperature and consistency of foam. The coffee though was a bit too fruity for me. Since they are a coffee roastery I would have expected to choose from a variety of beans and be offered more information about their coffees. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS 2 STARS: My customer service yesterday was 2 stars after interaction w/ a grumpy & pretentious barista. I've been a fairly loyal customer; evening purchasing 32 oz growler from Jones coffee. I realized the 16 oz cold brew is $4, whereas 32 oz growler is $10: I asked why the price discrepancy.The newer barista serving me was (he was friendly & tried to answer) was unsure & asked a seasoned Jones barista. She explained price discrepancy & demonstrated that iced brew was mostly ice & 32 oz growler was all coffee & hence a better value. This sounds great, right? Not so! My parents taught that 'not WHAT you say but HOW you say it'. She was curt & rude with an air of how dare you question the great & mighty Oz, to the point that my return is doubtful. Although Jones is more convenient to my commute, I'll go my other top P'dena cold brew joints. Besides, it seems that pointing out that the $4, 16 oz iced brew is mostly ice isn't the wisest business decision. read more

Interesting place for coffee. Had the latte and was not impressed when the "barista" asked me to walk over to the coffee to pour myself that portion of my latte. I mean, if I knew what I was doing, I wouldn't be going to a coffee place, right? I just filled half the cup, walked back, and he poured in the frothy mixture he had concocted in my short absence. The latte was okay, nothing to write home about (then again, maybe I should blame myself as I was responsible for making half of it). But I give it 3 stars because my latte was only $2.50. Now if it would've cost $3.50 or more, I would've seriously felt jipped. In comparison to the rest of the place, the seating area is tiny, and when I was there, packed. So if you don't like sharing tables, this isn't the place for you, and it wouldn't be an ideal place for a gathering or meeting as space is limited. Wow, I would've loved this place in my 20s, but I no longer find disheveled, cluttered counters, dirty equipment (pots, spoons, cups from coffee preparation), and poorly used space romantic. The Ethiopian coffee had zero complexity and could have been any run-of-the-mill brand, and for some reason, there were a lot of children running around that day. Today was my first time coming. I really liked the ambiance. The place could definitely use more seating as I had to wait a bit for a place to sit. My review, however is for service. I frequent many cafés in the Pasadena area. I always order the same thing. Iced Americano with 2 Splenda and half & half. When I order, I ask for it just like that. I sometimes get told that there is an area where I can put in my own condiments, to which I say kindly "thanks, but I prefer you do it". And I ALWAYS tip for that. And it's usually fine. This is for many reasons, but mainly because when I used to do it myself, they never "leave room" as I'd requested and I'd have to pour out some of the coffee I just paid for. Messy. I like to order it how I like it. That's all. Anyway, today, I ordered my coffee as per usual. And the lady working the register informed me that there was an area where I can "add half and half myself ". I responded with "oh, you guys don't have any back there?" Silence. Awkward silence. She didn't even acknowledge my question. She clearly heard me. No distance had come between us. The volume of the music didn't suddenly become louder. She's heard me just fine moments before when I placed my order. She looked at me, took my card and processed payment as if I hadn't asked anything. Anyways, I'm not sure I'll be going back. There are so many cafés in the area with great service and a bad attitude is enough for me to stay away. Plus, if I'm paying $4.36 for a coffee, I want it the way I order it. Their baristas did not want to serve 6 lattes in mugs, instead they wanted to give them to me in to go cups because they did not wanted to wash their mugs. the vibe here is super chill. it's got this artsy -but not too hipster thing down to an art. we stopped by on a day when food trucks were outside and a little food co-op vendor was heading a table and some live music flowing out of its warehouse like setting. immediately, we were attracted to the wafting freshly roasted coffee beans. ... sigh. hubs got a latte to go - comes with a little latte art heart and the foam comes THICK (which, i love... foam mustache!!! :DDDDDD) it was a nice smooth texture with a stiffer taste (according to hubs). their collection of coffee is quite extensive and they also offer teas, hot chocolate, and azteca mocha (wish i got that!!) ... and some small pastries. we got it to go because although it was spacey inside, it was also quite crowded ... and all seats were taken. we wandered to the community board and the "selling room" where they sold handicrafts to support different causes while happily splitting the said coffee. read more

The coffee is pretty good. I prefer a darker roasting style that brings out the flavor more. The whole third wave coffee thing is a bit contrived and overdetermined. The baristas are nice and do a good job. And the space is very cool. But, it's disappointing, if you want a place to sit and read or chat, that sometimes they really blare the music. I thought I had found a nice quite place. But the third time I went back, you could hear the music blaring from the parking lot. It was very annoying. They have this place so wired, there are even ceiling speakers in the bathrooms. It's ridiculous. Why can't there be a single place you can go and have a quiet atmosphere? It's becoming harder and harder to find. I don't need cafes to be like night clubs. It's not pleasant. It's just a "hip" affectation. Please stop blasting my eardrums out. Also, even if you think you're being ironic, 80s music is not hip. It was annoying and Muzak like in the 1980s and it's annoying now. Of course, now that I've said that, some "ironic" hipster will decide Muzak itself is cool. I do not know what all the hype is all about, except that Jones Coffee Roasters has excellent, self-roasted, locally-sourced coffee at outrageously high prices in a unique atmosphere (sometimes with music). If that is your thing, this is the perfect place for you. Otherwise, if you want good coffee at better prices (along with WiFi and friendlier service), look elsewhere. I came here one afternoon after reading everyone else's overwhelmingly positive reviews, so I came with very high expectations. Upon stepping in, one is certainly impressed with the vast array of original art and postings of the latest on-goings in town. Jones Coffee Roasters does have a nice local feel to it, as the place is kept in tip-top shape. There is plenty to look at while waiting for your drink to be made. Like my overall rating, the service was just A-OK. The cashier was very nice, but the baristas didn't seem to want to be there. One of them gave me one of the strangest stares I had ever received, even after I smiled and greeted him. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and just assume that he might have had a bad day. If you are wanting to hang out here for WiFi usage or reading, this may also not be the best place to be. There is no wireless connection, and the place can get pretty noisy when the crowd arrives. It all comes to a hush near closing time (6PM on weekdays). There are some days when live music is played, so you may want to call ahead to see if you shouldn't bring in your reading. The drinks themselves were good, but they weren't very hot. I will agree with other reviewers on the flavor of the drinks. They were superb and certainly among the best in terms of the richness and balance of flavors. On the other hand, I don't think an 8 oz or 12 oz drink should cost nearly the same price as a deli sandwich, even if it is locally sourced. Also, be warned that their cups are suspiciously small. I didn't actually take the volume of my 8 oz or 12 oz drink with a Pyrex measuring cup, so those of you with a scientific background will probably neglect this particular comment, but the cups do seem a bit on the smaller-than-usual side compared to their competitors. I would say that overall, Jones Coffee Roaster is a good place to go on occasion for an absolutely delicious drink, but not the place to go to for your regular cup of joe every morning, unless you so happen to have a huge savings fund somewhere. In the case of coffee, you do get what you pay for here, and quality certainly trumps quantity at Jones. Many of you will consider Jones Coffee Roasters your perfect go-to for your caffeine fix, especially for you coffee aficionados that love locally-sourced coffees. On the other hand, there will be those of you, like me, who will simply go, "Meh, it's okay overall," and prefer another coffee shop with lower prices, a more friendly staff, more volume of drink per cent, a more quiet atmosphere, and if needed, WiFi amenities. read more

Everytime I go to Jones the wait for a coffee is far too long, especially when one can see the Barista moving at tortoise like speed behind the espresso machine while various other employees wander aimlessly about the shop. There are TWO machines with available space for 4 Barista's to make coffee at one time. I'm not saying they need four Barista's at once, but good god, speed it up a bit. Good coffee doesn't take time to make, it merely takes skill, none of which the Barista's at Jones have. Sure you can make a leaf with the foam, but it's inside what counts. The drinks are sub par. The milk is often times not steamed to a hot enough temperature, and instead of pouring shots directly into the cups from the machine, the Barista first pulls them into unwashed shot glasses. I wait in a long line to order my drink as I watch the jittery cashier make small talk with every customer and then proceed to wait even longer as my drink is made. All the while fending off the overly talkative employees who seem to get paid to do nothing more than bother the customers while they patiently wait, and wait, and wait for their order to be called. read more

I like their coffee. I have had their coffee in other coffee shops and decided to go to the roaster's headquarters. In the last week, i have been there twice. Ordered a Cappuccino with Almond Milk. It was made quickly and i was on my way out. By the time I had a taste, i was in my car driving to the fwy, i realized they had used Whole Milk. :( I went by today and ordered the same drink, Cappuccino with Almond Milk. I said it several times to make sure i was clear. They asked what size, i replied small and handed them my 16oz mug. The female barista with short hair and glasses, dressed like a dude, made my drink. As she was pouring in the microfoam she kept going to the top, i started saying "small" but she filled to the edge. Her reply was that of annoyance, "we fill it to the top." Then she said, "do you want me to make another one?", i said yes, i want a cappuccino, not a latte. Another one was made but she heated the almond milk way too much, and ruined the cappuccino. I would like the management to restructure the way the orders are placed so it is clear what is being ordered and to teach their "baristas" how to make espresso drinks with less attitude. read more

this is the best café in so Cal. i've been to many other cafes, and I am sure all of them have good-quality coffee beans, but so many of them do not know how to make a "good" latte or cappuccino. Jones is the only café that knows how to make a good cup of latte. plus, they will give you some good amount of samples if you ask for it. read more

My favorite coffee place in Pasadena! The baristas here are true craftsmen! They take their time with each drink and get it right! It's a little pricier than Starbucks, but totally worth it.
