I appreciate places like this that are basically holes in the wall but still managed to bring in a lot of customers. That said, I don't really understand the hype of this place. It's your basic hamburger and hotdog spot, I ordered a double cheeseburger with chili and slaw and a small french fry. The cheeseburger was okay, but all the flavor came from the chili and slaw, that Hamburg patties did not have any flavor at all. Price were okay but how hard is it to dump a bag of crinkle cut fries and a fryer? Overall I think it's a once and done type place, I really don't see any reason to go back. read more

Good, just not great. Breakfast review. As always, I grade like with like. A similar diner, local, with similar food. The locals are going to disagree. This is a third place. Many tables were getting up to talk to other tables. My friends over medium eggs and my soft scrambled were cooked correctly. The hot cake was wonderful. Skip the home fries and the cheese omelet. Home fries are some frozen brand with zero seasoning. Cheese omelet had zero lift. Reminded me of chow hall food in the Army. Order a hot dog with chili. Chili is a passible hot dog chili. Enough interesting notes to keep you guessing what's in it. Hot dog bun was almost wet from what ever steam or from the hot dog itself. All drinks are served in to go cups. Hot chocolate was served "not stirred." Again. Friendly place. Come in. Take a seat. I'd have to try lunch to see if the food improves. read more

Walking into the Jones cafe gives you the feeling that you are Mart McFly and you are Back to the Future. This is your old time dinner from start to finish. The food is served in paper baskets and on wax paper. The services are family friendly and outstanding. I got a burger and onion rings and my wife got a BLT and fries. Good place to grab a good affordable breakfast or lunch. They are only open until about 2 PM so they only offer breakfast and lunch, but I believe the entire menu is served all day. I moved to Clayton about 2.5 years ago from Raleigh, but my friend used to work in Clayton and told me about Jones and took me there once and I really enjoyed it. I've only been for breakfast and I loved it. I love a good simple country breakfast for a good price and with good portions. Although I love all foods, nothing beats simple eggs, bacon, toast, and potatoes. There's plenty of parking all around available on the street in lots nearby. When you enter the restaurant you seat yourself and a server will come to you. I've always been greeted quickly. The menu is simple, but good. I usually get eggs, bacon/sausage, toast, and home fries. There's a lot of food and it's cooked perfectly. They are probably best known for their hot dogs and I must say they are very, very good. I'm not even a big fan of hot dogs and I enjoyed it. You can also order for takeout, but you'll need to come in to pick up your food. Definitely worth a try if you're in town and want some small good ole country cooking. read more

My only complaint was that the burger meat didn't have much flavor and the meat didn't seem of that great of quality. I grew up in Clayton. My dad took me here all the time. I sat and looked at all the signs, giggling and chattering with him about the decor before inhaling hot dogs. Jones Lunch is a Clayton staple. There's nothing to review other than that. What else can I say about the "roadkill cafe" than it's older than I am at 37, a true relic, and should be given protected historical landmark status. Visited Jones Lunch on the recommendation of a friend and after seeing it featured in Our State magazine for their tasty hot dogs. I reviewed the menu, placed an order at the counter, and stood near the back until my order was ready. The woman who took my order was extremely kind and called me "baby" probably 20 times. Bless good southern hospitality. My order was ready quickly: 2 hot dogs with chili, mustard, and slaw and an order of onion rings. You can order beef dogs but if you don't specify, you'll get good ole Carolina red dogs. The chili is tasty and has lots of flavor. It has a similar texture to the finely chopped slaw so they blend together well. Add the tang of the mustard and you've got a great dog. Onion rings were good too. I would have loved a dipping sauce but the ketchup was left out of the bag. No worries. I took my order to go and enjoyed my meal in the park just down the street. I came here with a party of three, which eventually became a party of 5. This was during the Clayton Harvest Festival and the place was hopping. Initially we were party of 3 and got our drinks and placed our food orders. 2 more showed up and quickly place their drink and food orders. We had placed about 10 minutes before the other two showed up and we were surprised to see that the latecomers got their food ahead of us. Clearly we had been forgotten in some way. Eventually I got my sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich which was just okay for me. The fries were a tad undercooked and sort of soggy. I CAN say that the prices are fantastic and our waitress was attentive and acted quickly when she figured out we hadn't gotten our food yet, so I agree with other reviewers on that part, but the food is pretty basic and maybe my experience was a result of the Harvest crowd. All in all, there are better options nearby (Eggs Up Grill), but I may come back to Jones for lunch or when the kitchen is less busy. read more

Such a pleasant surprise. I had a nearby hair appointment so thought I'd grab lunch first. I looked up the options on Yelp and decided to try Jones Lunch. I got there about noon and within a few minutes every table was occupied. My hamburger and fries were served promptly, as ordered since they had quite a few servers. I was really pleased because the bacon on the burger was crisp as were my fries and both were tasty. I loved the family friendly atmosphere and the prices were very reasonable. What a slice of nostalgia! Loved this place and wouldn't have found it without yelp. This is a wonderful old school diner. All about straightforward breakfast and lunch offerings prepared fast and skillfully. We had 2 hamburgers, a bacon cheese burger & a red hot sandwich (slight spicy Carolina pork sausage on Texas toast/mine had slaw and chili on it), fries, onion rings and sweet potato fries all for under $21 dollars. What a great value! Hands down the Best sweet potato fries I've ever had and the onion rings were up there. Crispy and not at all greasy. Fried food heaven! So I've been here before, but this time I was able to take pictures and post a review. We had 3 kids, 3 adults and the service was top notch! We went at 12pm on a Tuesday and they were very busy, but we managed to grab a table quickly. We ordered 2 chicken tender baskets, a cheeseburger basket, grilled cheese basket and a grilled ham and cheese along with drinks. The food came out quickly and the server was super friendly. Classic old school, small town diner serving breakfast, plates at lunch, sandwiches, and some of the very best chili dogs you will find - anywhere. These are the traditional neon red weiners, and there very well may not be an ounce of beef of any kind in them. The bun is soft, almost gooey, but it is the chili that makes this a great hot dog. This is a very thick, meaty chili, much like that at Green's Lunch in Charlotte - the result is a very heavy, very tasty dog. We ordered one all the way, and another without slaw, and both were excellent. I probably liked the slawless dog a little more without the sweetness to mute the taste of the chili. Green's is my reference point for Southern Chili Dogs in this area, and Jones' dog is almost that good. Service is fast and friendly; prices are reasonable. I came for the chili dog, and that is all I can speak to, but they are worth a visit if hot dogs are you thing, as they are mine. read more

Rare find. A trip back in time to an old-time diner you would find in the 1950s. The best mom and pop place for 100 miles at least. Hot dogs, hamburgers, eggs, and bacon. Nothing fancy, just simple, well-made, delicious, good, satisfying eats in a time-machine environment. (Think of Back-to-the-Future without Biff). Service is friendly and super fast, parking easy to find on the street or around the corner. Always full, might have a minuscule wait on the weekends, but it's not much because the service is fast and the food is good. read more

I've only heard good things about this place. Lived in this area for almost 30 years and never stopped by there. FINALLY went and lived up to its claim. Hot dogs were great. Piping hot soft bun and fixed with all the topping I wanted. My only bad thing about my whole experience is the a/c. It's was sweating hot in there. We sat at the bar right InFront of the wall unit. The lady behind the bar even adjusted the vents and had it blowing right on us but it was still hot. I'll go back again but you can be sure it won't be during the summer.
