When I was about to order a full-size cheesesteak, he recommended the 8.5" instead, mentioning that the 17" is huge and I'm so glad I listened! The restaurant itself is really comfortable, with one side feeling like a classic diner and the other having more of a bar vibe with a nice drink selection. Disappointing experience. The main reason Is the lackluster service from the waiter. He was so off putting. His whole energy was giving.., I don't give a fuck. I came here to try a local spot that served fresh Philly steak and the sweet potato fries. They were out of fries and the Philly steak was not good. Sorry. The best part was the owner /cook was so nice. He came out and served my beer with a smile. That's great customer service. Maybe they need to touch the young waiter what that looks like. read more

Found this spot on #Yelp as I'm out in Garner, say 45-minutes away. A Taste of Philly 4 U had good reviews (and directions on how to locate them in a lil strip center). As a South Jersey girl, I'd love to find a Philly cheesesteak that tastes like home. I've been looking. Well, I'm still looking. Was greeted warmly by Ms. T, who provided excellent service. Decent menu choices. Despite being known for their cheesesteak, it did not meet my expectations. Steak didn't taste high quality, processed cheese was stuck to the roll and not mixed in, and grease dripped all over the second plate I was offered after it pooled into the wax paper in the serving basket. Decent food but location and interior decor is not for the faint of heart. Located within anindustrial area, specifically a dead end street next to a questionable hotel. Kitchen is completely separated from dinning area, possibly on a different floor. I ordered the chicken cheese steak which was 4/5 and onion rings were freshly cooked and crisp. Having originally been raised in Philadelphia (and left in 1967 to join the Marines), I have often searched for the types of traditional (original) steak sandwiches that I used to get at various diners, restaurants, or steak joints all over Philadelphia in my youth (50's and 60's). Now granted, quite a few restaurants/outlets here in central North Carolina sell their versions of steak sandwiches - but in the end, they often just don't hit the spot. By that I mean to say that a great, traditional Philly Steak Sandwich consists of several variables - that include the roll, the type of meat used (and texture - that's important), and the amount of the meat on the roll - not to mention the original types of add-on ingredients often found in the real deal. As an aside, over the years, I've eaten in over a half dozen places where they put so little meat on the roll, it felt (and tasted) like I was eating a roll with nothing on it. Several weeks ago, while visiting the Walmart shopping center near the Cleveland area on highway 42 (near Garner, NC), I was stunned to see a very large food truck with "A Taste of Philly" as its logo. I told my wife to head on into Walmart, while I checked out this food truck. And damnnnnn - I'm so glad that I did! From the moment I met the owner - an outgoing, very friendly, and jovial dude - I felt right at home. The owner moved to this area from Philadelphia just a few short years ago. So I ordered a half steak sandwich (now mind you, even a half sandwich is almost 10" long), with provolone (sweet peppers - an original Philadelphia tradition that you just don't find down here) onions, mushrooms, and a variation of a marinara sauce blend. As an aside, in the "old" days, one of the big add-ons to any type of Philly Steak Sandwich was adding the marinara sauce which put the icing on the cake, so to speak. When he served me the steak I was not prepared to see what I got - meaning, it was massive. Heck, there was more meat on there than the roll itself, and the texture - ohhhhh, that marvelous original Philly Steak texture. From the very first bite, I experienced, what I believed to be a "Gastrointestinal Orgasm," due to my moaning with every bite - haaaaaaaaaaaaa. If there is one recommendation I can make - and it's an important one - it is that he should look for original Philadelphia-style Italian rolls such as from Amoroso's or other brands. The rolls that "A Taste of Philly" uses are like large hot dog rolls, and the texture of the roll is important. I'm not saying this to diminish the overall taste of the sandwich, but having the right rolls are important. In talking with the owner (gosh, I feel bad that his name escapes me at the moment), he told me he has 2-3 of these large food trucks and that the public responses to his food line have been outstanding. I live in Fuquay-Varina, which is 30 minutes south of Raleigh, and he indicated that he was looking for a spot to set up there also. Folks - this owner (and his food) is (are) the real deal. If you're not from Philly, you probably wouldn't understand what I was getting at. But if you are from Philly and you fondly recall steak joints like Pats, Ginos, and a whole host of others, you shouldn't be disappointed with what you'll get at a "Taste of Philly's" - I can only give it my highest recommendation. I live in Clayton, and someone on Nextdoor or the local Facebook group mentioned that "A Taste of Philly" was opening in the area off 40/42. As I was a fan of Anvil's cheesesteaks before they closed, I figured I'd seek "A Taste of Philly" out. It was a bit challenging to find as I was winging it without GPS on Technology Drive by the Garner Food Lion there, and I had to look it up on my phone to have GPS fly me in. For reference, it's right behind University Lights in Garner, and unless you are looking for it, you will probably miss it. That said, upon entering the place, I was greeted with a broad smile and warm welcome by the exceptionally friendly owner, and I ordered a half cheesesteak to go, made the way he suggested. We talked as they made my sandwich in the kitchen, and he told me that he moved to the area from Philadelphia in 2020, right when the pandemic hit! Undeterred, he opened a food truck selling cheesesteaks in the Food Lion parking lot off Cleveland Road in Garner. From there, he moved into a physical location by another Food Lion off 40/42, and now, moved to this new location. He is legit, directly from Philly, and the cheesesteak? Get out! Sublime and exceptionally tasty! Anvil's used to be the best cheesesteak in the area, but now, A Taste of Philly is the new cheesesteak champ! It's a bit out of the way, but you'll be glad and satisfied that you make the trip. It's totally worth it, and I'll be back, bringing friends! read more

Don, the owner was very entertaining and the service was exceptional. We came after the lunch rush and the atmosphere was very relaxed and had a local vibrance.
