This hidden gem spot is DELICIOUS!! You have to come try it :) The lady who sat us was so kind and friendly, and explained the whole menu since it was our first time there. We tried the Chinese style burgers - one with pork, and one with lamb. The lamb was my favourite. Then, their signature dish of hand pulled noodles with pork and chili oil, and pan fried dumplings. Those noodles were amazing... I don't know what they put in it, but the sauce was so savoury, and the chili oil balanced out well. We ordered hot and sour noodle soup, pan fired dumplings, biang biang noodles, cucumber salds, cumin fries and chicken wings. They were all very good. There was no bad choices. The only downside is the restaurant is a bit small so seating isn't the most comfortable. But for the quality, quantity and price of the food, I'd definitely come back often. read more

I went with friend to Jookak after craving some Biang Biang noodles. We were greeted by a lovely woman (who I presume is the owner) who promptly seated us in the cozy space. She offered some great suggestions about the menu and we took almost all of them. The wontons were delicious and the broth was amazing. The Xian burgers were flavourful with a good pastry. Xi'an style Chinese has become one of my favourite discoveries of the last year. Joojak stands above the rest! Not only is the food superb, but the owner, Regina, is the sweetest woman ever, and makes everyone feel welcome. If it's your first time there she will patiently explain the menu to you. And what a menu! You have to try "Saliva chicken". That's actually a mangled translation of "mouth watering chicken", not actually made with saliva! Tender poached chicken (almost like Hainan chicken) in an incredible sauce. The hand pulled noodles are fantastic, and the seasoned ground lamb on a soft white bun ( think taco with thick fluffy char Sui bai pastry instead of tortilla) is out of this word. Great handmade dumplings too! Been there twice this summer and can't to go back again. Strongly recommend this little hole in the wall on Kingsway. The food was actually quite delicious. It was not only some of the best Xi'an food I've ever had, but one of the best meals I've ever had period. In the middle of the meal, I texted my family telling them we had to come here in the future together. I also made plans to come back later this very week. Unfortunately, the server (and owner?) complained that the tip I gave was too small. I find this to be completely unacceptable, given that tips are a bonus rather than something expected (especially in Canada where servers make minimum wage). Any amount should be appreciated and I was shocked at being accosted for not giving what they considered to be an acceptable amount. I will not be returning which is a shame because as I said, the food is really quite good. However, I cannot support such an establishment. The owner should consider whether it is worth losing business from harassing customers about a tip. I would've been happy to return dozens of times with numerous people otherwise. read more

Known for their Biangbiang noodles, which are made with wheat and hand stretched and pulled, Joojak is bring traditional and delicious items that are getting more popular in the food scene. The restaurant is pretty small, so if you're thinking of going in a group larger then 6 or else you may be waiting. The staff and owner(?) are very helpful in recommending and going through the menu, in case it was your first time trying Northern Chinese cuisine. What we ordered: Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce $12.99 Pan fried Pork and Cilantro Dumplings (12 pcs) $13.50 Hand Pulled Biang Biang Noodles with Chili Oil and Pork $12.75 Hand Pulled Spinach Noodles with Chili Oil, Tomato, Egg, and Pork $14.25 Beef Noodle in Soup $12.99 The hand pulled noodles were the star of the table for sure. The fragrance of the chili oil mixed with the minced pork over the stretchy noodles were fantastic! The long pulled noodles are thin yet chewy and hot chili oil over top really made the dish special. Also chili oil doesn't really mean spicy. Its more flavor with a kick at the end. Nothing at all like Nashville hot. The Steamed Chicken with Chili Sauce was okay... like 6/10 (IMO). The spice level on it was a bit hotter then the noodles, but the pickled vegetables cut through the chili oil, presenting a good balance between the heat and slight vinegar of the dish. I also really enjoyed the hand made dumplings. The skin was thin and crispy and the filling was flavourful. 10/10 would order again. If cilantro isn't your thing, then they also have a chive or celery version. If you're not into spice, do get the Beef Noodle Soup. Its hardy and makes the belly warm. I just find that after eating all these flavourful spiced foods, my palate finds the Beef Noodle Soup too bland. Solid Northern style Chinese place on Kingsway. Chairman Mao would be proud. Parking is available on the side streets, as well as at metered spots on Kingsway. The inside is pretty bare bones and dated. Looks like a mom and pop shop. This place takes an unofficial "break" between 1500-1630, which isn't shown on the business hours outside. With that said, the waitress still served me even though I showed up at 1500. A bunch of customers also showed up after me but they were also seated and served. I guess it depends on the mood of the staff. Just something to keep in mind in case you show up during that window and find the place closed. The noodle soup I had was pretty solid. Portion was a wee bit small, but it was tasty. There are different noodle options. I would recommend the thick one (Xian style biang biang) for the authentic experience. First time trying Xi'an cuisine (Northern Chinese food). This is a 5 table restaurant (2 - 2 person table and 3 - 4 person table). We ordered: -Xian pork burger - 5/5 stars - very flavorful and juicy pork burger. -Xian lamb with green pepper & cumin burger - 4/5 - very flavorful and juice lamb -Beef roll - 4/5 - tasty and very similar to the Shanghai's beef roll but the wrap was a little soggy. -Deep fried chicken with chilli - 3/5 - this dish is tasty but I wouldn't order this again. Bone in chicken is in very small pieces and seems like there are more bones than chicken. -Pan fried dumplings stuff with pork and chives - 5/5 - dumplings were tasty and good. - No. 9 Beef & Noodle Soup - 4/5 - very good and the soup base kinda reminds me of Vietnamese pho. -No. 10 Noodles with braised beef and bamboo in soup - 4/5 - very tasty. -15 Hand pulled spinach noodles in pork and hot chilli oil - 4/5 very flavorful. I didn't see any spinach and the noodles were white. Most food that we ordered were very good but the order of the food that came out could be better. We got the dumpling first, deep fried chicken in chilli, followed by the burgers, 2 noodles, and then the beef roll, and then the last noodle. I thought the burgers and beef roll should come out first, then the dumplings, noodles and the deep friend chicken in chilli. The deep fried chicken in chilli is a bit salty eating alone without the noodles since it is not an appetizer. The restaurant was full but all food came out a bit slow for all tables. Most dishes came out one at a time slowly. It is okay if it is appetizer since you are sharing but we were not planning to share the noodles. Overall, 3.5 stars for food, service, and experience. Sometimes good, but highly inconsistent. One day, the mapo tofu is more intense ma la flavor than you can find anywhere else in Vancouver and the next day it will be spicy but with zero ma la flavor. It's also fairly pricey for the portion size. Some of the dishes (like the lamb burger) are bad for take-out or delivery because they'll get soggy and this place doesn't pack them up in a way to prevent that. Middle-of-the-road Northern Chinese food, with some OK vegetarian options, but overall, portions are small, so it's not great value. There are many better places in Vancouver for this type of food. Having noticed they had a bunch of vegetarian options on their menu, we decided to try them out for dinner. We ordered the Hand Pulled Biang Biang Noodles with Chili Oil ($10.75), Stir Fried Green Beans ($14.99), and the Bean Curd with Green Pepper ($14.99). The portions were all quite small - the same $ gets you much bigger portions at most Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. The food was decently tasty, but fairly ordinary and lacking much depth. By dish: -Hand Pulled Biang Biang Noodles with Chili Oil - the thick noodles had a slightly firm and chewy texture, and were served with 3-4 small pieces of bok choy, a tiny bit of bean sprouts, and plenty of chili oil. Tiny portion that is bordering on insulting. 2.5/5 -Stir fried green beans - nicely cooked green beans, with plenty of flavour, adequate saltiness, but not really any spiciness. Solid enough but there are way better green bean dishes out there. Portion was fairly small once again. 3/5 -Bean Curd with Green Pepper - I really liked the very firm thinly-sliced tofu - the texture was great. The dish is served with only green peppers (used to be red peppers - that would've been better). There isn't much spice or flavour to the dish, so it is on the bland side. Luckily, I had asked for homemade chili oil that really livens the dish up. 2.5/5 All in all, pretty middle-of-the-road Northern Chinese food. I don't understand the high ratings here really. Have they really not discovered the many superior versions of this all around Vancouver? The star dish here is the cold steamed chicken with chili oil. The chicken was cooked perfectly -- tender and boneless, no bloody spots anywhere. The chili oil was not very spicy but it complemented the chicken very well. There were some pickled vegetables underneath the chicken. Another dish I liked was the cold noodles with gluten and sesame. This was very tasty and the noodles was chewy. It went well with the cold chicken too. I had tried the pork burger previously and thought it was nice. The place is not very big, so I can imagine it does get crowded during the peak meal times. The service was good, and the owners were friendly and helpful. I asked for something which would be the quickest to be ready and they recommended the cold dishes which would take about 5 minutes and they were really ready by then. I wish I had pictures to share, but by the time I remembered to take out my camera, we had eaten all of the food. That's how good it was. My friend and I got the lamb burger, hand pulled chili noodles with pork, and fried dumplings. The lamb burger was savory and juicy, dripping down my fingers. I loved how chewy the noodles were, and the dumplings had come straight out of the pan-- they were steaming hot with a little bit of char. Yet as good as all of the food was, I think the star of the show was the service. The lady (perhaps the owner?) who welcomed us in also took us through the whole menu, explaining what was popular and describing dishes based on our cravings. She engaged with us so genuinely; she single-handedly raised this review from four stars to five stars. I spent some of my growing up years in northern China, so it was wonderful to get a taste of my childhood here. I know where I will return when the craving strikes. read more

Came here for dinner around 630 on a Saturday evening and it was packed, by then again there are only about 5-6 tables! We luckily snagged the last table and were served tea promptly. It's a small family run restaurant, which seems to have many return customers. We ordered the spicy biang biang noodles, xian pork burgers, pan fried pork and chive dumplings, stir fried fish and vegetable, and jia jiang mein. The biang biang noodles were super thick and wide, with good chew, and the delicious sauce coated the noodles and had the perfect amount of spice to make you keep wanting to eat more. This was easily my favourite dish. The Xian pork burgers were recommended, and the pork was super tender like Asian pulled pork with the traditional northern Chinese spices. It was served in a bun that was like a thick green onion pancake, but less flaky. The meat was tasty, but I think it would have been better in a green onion pancake, or even in a steamed mantou with some pickled veggies to balance it out. There are a variety of dumplings to choose from, and you can get them boiled or pan fried (at a charge of about $0.50-$1). They were pan fried well and the filling was juicy and tasty, especially with some vinegar and/or chilli sauce. My one little complaint may be that the wrapper was a bit thick, but still crisp and not gummy! The stir fried fish and vegetables was supposed to be our "healthy" dish, but the fish is lightly fried with celery, asparagus and fried black beans. The batter was light and crisp on the fish - eaten alone it was a bit under seasoned, but it pairs perfectly with the fried black beans. My least favourite dish was the jia jiang mein... this is probably only because I'm use to thick sauces that coat the noodles, this one was very watery. It would be nice if it was spicy as well, but still an okay dish but something I wouldn't order again. Great hidden gem along a mass of restaurants on Kingsway. Family run, great friendly service. Joojak is conveniently located, with several parking lots nearby. This also means that it is competing with a lot of other similar Chinese cuisine in the area. However, after having it once, I'm more than convinced that Joojak does more than enough to stand out amongst the competition. The lamb burger was juicy, tender, flavourful, and fairly priced. This could easily fill you up for a small lunch at a small price. The dumplings were slightly on the pricy side but they were fried nicely and tasted good. The oil taste low quality and flavored are overpowered but vinegar. Honestly nothing really compare with the Xi'an food I had in China or other decent Xi'an restaurant I had in the states. Oh the dumpling. Had the pan fried dumplings too. It's a no. I like when pan fried dumplings with crispy skins. This one is not. I love Joojak with all my heart. I think my favourite dish is the lamb soup with the pickled garlic and peppers on the side. Everything is delicious though. My partner really loves the chicken wings with potatoes. The hand pulled noodles are so so good. The service is always so kind and friendly. They generally like to get out right at closing time, so it's best to arrive at least 30 mins before then. LOL to the person posting below that they prefer Peaceful and Grand. A northern chinese cuisine indeed. We got the pan fried dumpling, the pork burger and the spinach handmade biang biang noodle with pork chilli oil tomato and egg. They were all trully amazing and it reminded me of my heritage food. The handmade biang biang noodle is the star of the night and got super melting in my mouth and super recommended to get. This place is a diamond in the rough. One of the best Xi'an food I've had in Vancouver. This place is tiny, but the food they serve is amazing. The cold steamed chicken with chilli oil is the star dish. Think of it as Hianese chicken drizzled with chilli oil. The chicken is moist and very flavorful. The biang biang noodles are made on site and they have a nice bite to them. Also the lamb & pork burgers are delish. I prefer the pork over lamb as they are very juicy.
