As many have pointed out. This is a Taiwanese restaurant. You wouldn't think it based on the name. But it's a pretty authentic one too. We ordered several representative dishes: Xiu long bao - these were just bad. Each and every dumpling came out broken with all the soup already leaked out. Dough was too thin in the bottom, too thick at the top. They over-steamed it. 1/5. When we brought it up, their excuse was "we were so busy so we steamed it too long." Pathetic excuse for bad food. Also not acceptable. Sweet and sour fish with tofu. This was good. 4/5 3 cup chicken - too sweet, VERY dry. You know it's bad when they manage to get bone-in leg/thigh meat dry. And when they chopped the chicken, they did not clean off all the bone shards so the dish is littered with tiny bone pieces that can break your teeth. Too bad it's one of my favourite Taiwanese dishes. 1/5. Funny enough I sat next to their award on the wall for best 3 cup chicken in 2013. 11 years did not serve them well apparently. Stinky tofu hotpot with pork. Ok. Not bad, not amazing. 3/5 Spicy sautéed clams with basil. Good. 4/5 Taro ball soup dessert. Not too sweet, good QQ texture. Just lacking any real taro flavour. 3/5. Service was mediocre. 2.5/5. CASH ONLY. Not even debit. They also only give you really shady looking hand written receipt stubs. Gee I wonder why? Parking is only on the street. Can be atrocious. Lots of restaurants around here and street parking can get full fast too. Annoying. Restaurant itself is very small and cleanliness is just ok. Overall 3/5. We ordered takeout on our way home and were surprised to see the restaurant completely full on a Sunday evening. This place is popular for good reason. They offer authentic Taiwanese dishes - the beef noodle soup got a 5 star rating from my mom, who is a tough critic. The chive pancake was chewy and flaky - fresh and delicious! The only dish that was kind of disappointing was the hand cut noodles with seafood. There were only a few pieces of shrimp/squid, and the noodles didn't seem hand cut, at least not freshly hand cut. The food was well packaged and made it back across an international border, so kudos to them! I'm sure we will try out other dishes next time we are in the area. Kalvin's still serving Szechuan food during COVID. The last time I had a sit-down meal at Kalvin's was probably 3-5 years ago. I remember that we had to share a table with another couple because the restaurant was so crowded. That was probably the main reason we haven't gone back until now. Fast forward to present-day, and we now have to make due with takeout. People do eat in the restaurant, but it wasn't something we were willing to risk at this time. Their Xiao Long Baos are far from the best. Thick, rubbery skin wrapped around watered-down soup and mediocre pork. Other places have raised the bar, and Kalvin's has not kept up. They should poach some of the employees from Long's on Main Street or R & H Chinese Food at Lansdowne Mall in Richmond. The beef dish we ordered was also a bit underwhelming. The beef was so chewy and flavorless. Did the beef come from geriatric cows? And, the hot-and-sour soup should have been called drab-and-tepid soup. Again, try Long's on Main Street for a better example of this dish. Limp bamboo shoots, mushy shrimp and runny soup (hot-and-sour soup needs to be viscous). We ordered some plain, white rice which they didn't screw up. That's as backhanded a compliment I can give. We used to go to Kalvin's more often years and years ago, so it is somewhat surprising that I did not enjoy the food from my most recent experience. No idea what happened. This place is authentic!! Wow! This place came highly recommended and did not disappoint. It's a small place with a few larger party rants and a couple 4 tops. If you're coming with a larger party, make a reservation. The service was very good here. They same by twice to change our plates and helped ya consulate dishes when we needed to make room for more food (we over ordered oops!) I highly recommend taking a look at the pre order section on the menu to see if anything tickles your fancy. We had the mince shrimp lettuce wraps and braised beef shank in brown sauce. Excellent!!!! We also ordered a few items from the standby menu ans really loved the sautéed a choy with garlic. There are plenty of other things I want to try on this menu and can't wait to come back. read more

Kalvin's restaurant never disappoints. The is one of the first Taiwanese restaurants in the lower mainland and I am delighted that it has stood well against the test of time. Many of the chefs that opened Taiwanese restaurants in the past 2 decades were originally trained at Kalvin's. One thing I never understood was the "Szechuan" part of the restaurant name. I think it is just the result of a poor translation job, but I digress. Decor and space are my only complaints. There is not a lot of space in the restaurant, and the tables and chairs are dated and not comfortable. All visual aspects of a dining experience, including presentation of food, is sub-par. This explains my not-so-perfect rating. Service is friendly and english-speaking patrons will do fine as english menus are available. Come here for authentic, family-style Taiwanese food. Don't expect bubble tea or fancy desserts here. Come here for the real deal. The ideal situation is a table full of amazing food to share with friends and family. You might be shoulder-to-shoulder but you are able to enjoy more of the menu with a larger group. Their menu has all the classics you would expect: 3 cup chicken, dry squid stir fry with green onion and pork belly, fried crispy peppery chicken, spicy pork organ stew, etc. There are certain pre-order items also, and I recommend the (1) pork shank in brown sauce and (2) minced prawn wrapped in lettuce. Invited by a friend who's this restaurant frequent visiting guest. Out of six dishes we ordered (one appetizer, five main dishes): appetizer is giving a complete wrong item. Three main dishes coming up with a very stretched time.(like you got two within ten mins then the third one is thirsty mins late) The even worst part is two of five main dishes is not available for the day after we sit there for more than twenty minutes watching other tables having their food been served.(Other tables also have some dishes they forget to serve) A total disaster for the dinner. Been coming here for years and the food, although oily, is classic taiwanese and szechuan. The restaurant is minuscule but the same lovely lady has been there forever and works as fast and hard as she can. Service is a obviously not the most attentive but its not a bad attitude, its just a lack of room and servers. Our always orders include the potstickers which have the thicker skin with a nice pork filling and well pan fried. In addition, their xiao long bao are only mediocre but their beef rolls are one of the best around. They have a wonderfully crisp pancake encasing a delicious beef and hoisin filling! Next, their red bean curd fermented fried pork chops are made using pork jowl meaning it is a fatty but absolutely delicious dish. Finally, their chili wontons are very good as well. Overall, this place has good prices and their food has not decreased in quality. Whenever I ask my Taiwanese friends for the best Taiwanese restaurant in Vancouver they always recommend this place despite being called Kalvin's Szechuan Restaurant. Went with some of the dishes other Yelpers recommended and I give a thumbs up as well: Beef pancake Roll Lamb Stew Bamboo shoots with beef With a bucket of white rice. Tax and tip for 2 people - $50 cash only. Not the fanciest ambiance or decor, but the tasty home style cooking and friendly staff ensures this will continue to be one of the longest running Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. Honestly the best place to find some authentic Taiwanese dishes!! Our favourite is forever their pork blood and intestine! If you are into dishes with intestine, they have a few! They also have frozen dumplings, wheel cakes and buns as well if you want something to go. Always make a reservation as they are super busy all the time and they don't have a lot of seats. Recommend take outs as well if you want more space. They pack your food nicely and even provide a little cardboard box for ease of carrying! As puzzled as I am with the restaurant having Szechuan in its name but offering a number of Taiwanese dishes, I am amazed after one dine-in experience. We (luckily) made a reservation at 6pm and was told to return the table by 7:30pm. The service was impeccable for a Chinese restaurant. Our teapot was always topped up, empty plates cleared away promptly and most importantly, we didn't feel rushed at all. We ordered mostly Taiwanese dishes. I will have to return to try some of their Szechuan dishes. Our order consisted of: - salt n pepper deep fried chicken nuggets - everyone's favorite! ($11, good for sharing) - shredded chicken with cold glass noodles in sesame sauce - sesame sauce a bit too thick for my liking - salty egg yolk fried rice with beef - can definitely taste the yolk and not too salty at all ($15.50, their most expensive rice dish) - hand cut noodle with pork sauce & cucumber - the chewiness of the noodle made me overlook the fact that it looks too uniformed to be hand cut - steamed dumplings - thicker skin, breaks easily. Maybe I've been spoiled by Toronto's Taiwanese cuisine, but I didn't find this place quite impressive. I was desperately hoping to try their lamb hot pot with greens dish but ended up ordering something that sounded like it on the menu, but definitely wasn't (and turned out to be quite pricey too!). The lamb hotpot dish we ended up eating had a very strong lamb flavour and unfortunately was a lot of bones and fat. The soup was quite bland for my liking too. Overall, have had better, will probably be trying out other restaurants in the area before I return. read more

I've been coming to Kalvin's Szechuan Restaurant for many years and the food has never once been a disappointment. This establishment has all the hallmarks of providing patrons with an excellent dining experience: family owned, consistently consistent, well-priced and downright delicious. There are several dishes I'd love to highlight but if you're tackling this place for the first time, try the pot stickers and Shanghai-style pork dumplings (for starters). If you're looking for a good dish to compliment plain rice, I recommend the bamboo shoots with pork. Unfortunately, I only know the Mandarin names for the other dishes, but I encourage you to be adventurous and select something random out of the menu. It won't be a disappointment. Please be aware, however, that this restaurant accepts cash only. Additionally, seating is very limited (reservations accepted) and English is evidently a second language for its servers (but still passable). Reminds me of the genuineness of restaurant owners in Taiwan. She's also the owner of Cabin 5555 apparently. The food is really authentic, reasonably priced, and in large portions. I ordered minced pork rice (), spicy intestine stew (), scallion cake wrapped beef (), chives dumpling (), spicy pork ears (), Taiwanese rice noodles (), and clams! And guava juice. Let's just say... This could easily feed a family of 5. We ordered this amongst 2 people. The bill came out to be only $50. I must say, I have absolutely no complaints about this restaurant (I'm pretty picky)... This restaurant has been here for awhile... the owner refused to expand because he wants to make sure the quality of food is maintained. It is run by a husband & wife team together with their other employees- we have been coming to this place for eons. We never had a bad dish even their lunch specials are good, some of the lunch specials comes with their yummy egg drop soup. They have a good & decent menu with appetizers, mains, veggies (seasonal veggie dishes available), noodles, soup. They have some special dishes that needs to be ordered in advance- one of them is the braised pork hock... it is done so well that the meat is so tender & falls of the bone when you cut it. The other is the shrimp with lettuce wrap. These two are our favourites. Their smoked duck is good but we did not order it for this meal. Reservation is a must for weekdays & particularly weekends, staff are friendly even when they are very busy. Very small place with limited seating. Reservations are recommended. Despite making one, you can still expect a short waiting time for them to 'rush' and clean the table before you. However, upon waiting you are provided with the menu so to expedite the ordering process. Downside is if you came with a party of 4 or more, there isn't much room to stand and some may have to wait out in the cold. The price portion is pretty good. You don't get a whole lot but you do get a good amount of everything you ordered. This way you can enjoy more dishes and get a portion size more than from a tasting menu. Dishes we ordered: -Squid in special sauce (cold dish -4/5): The squid was cooked perfect. Not rubbery at all. It was served cold with a Thai style sauce made from fish sauce, cilantro and chili. I also tasted bits of ginger. -Lamb with caraway seeds (3/5): Slices of lamb with onions and green pepper. Lamb was thinly sliced and tender. The caraway seeds were a bit too much for me and I'd like to see more lamb than veggies. -Pork Blood & Intestines hotpot (4/5): This was served in a mini hotpot and had a reasonable amount of pork blood and intestines with some napa cabbage. It's a bit spicy but you can ask them to tone down the level of spiciness if needed. -Minced Pork with rice (3.5/5): A typical Taiwanese dish. Tasted good but not the best I've had. -Xiao Long Bao aka soup dumplings (3/5): You get 10 pcs per basket for $9. They were just ok. Not too much soup and the skin leaned a bit more on the thicker side. -Taiwanese beef roll (4.5/5): The slices of beef was soft and tender. The pancake was a bit thick but the flavour was so good. I could do another plate of these. -Taiwanese style clams (4/5): The clams were good. But most of the meat fell of the shells. It's ok. Some people like sucking on the shells anyways. They did add some type of leaf to it- basil? It gives the sauce a nice taste. The service was mediocre and I can understand because it's a small place and they don't want to turn down any customers so they try every way to speed up the service time -from taking the order to bringing out the dishes and clearing up used/empty plates. We did want to order a few more dishes but they told us that this would be enough. We indeed could have but didn't feel like ordering more dishes at the end of our meal so we just got an extra two bowl of rice to polish off the remainders. There's a high chance of coming back to try the other dishes if I'm in the area. Would order less spicy dishes next time since most friends can't handle spicy as well as I can. read more

Made a reservation as I was driving to the restaurant which is 20 minutes away from where I was and the 2 of us were seated right away. HIGHLY recommend making a reservation as minutes after we arrived there was a lot of people waiting. The thai style beef brisket and Szechuan beef noodle soup was fantastic. This restaurant is a throwback to the "Taiwanized" Szechuan restaurants that dominated the food scene of Taipei in the 80s and early 90s. They're a dying breed in Taiwan and it's nice to see one of them not only surviving, but thriving across the Pacific. They do all of the standards the way they used to in Taiwan. The XLB, while not strictly a Szechuan dish, had that distinctly inauthentic Taiwanese-soy-milk-breakfast-shop style thick wrapper and slightly juicy filling. The stir-fried bamboo shoot with pork and the stir-fried veggies had that thirst-inducing saltiness going for them. The chiltings and pork blood was also from that era of deep flavor and deep saltiness. The beef rolls received a surprisingly light-touch in terms of its sweet flavor to go along with the not-too-chewy beef and a not too doughy wrapper. As with everything, taste in food also evolves with the overall direction of society. Looking at their food through our modern, health-conscious prism, I would say that the flavorful, oily, salty, and nostalgia-laden food put out by the kitchen of Kalvin's Szechuan Restaurant deserves a solid three stars. read more

Being a Taiwanese and having friends here who are Taiwanese we of course visited Kalvin's just to see what the whole fuss was about, and he did not disappoint. The restaurant was small but the staff was helpful and you can see Kalvin interacting with his costumers while going back into the kitchen to cook every now and then. It's really a homey, welcoming atmosphere. The food, is mostly very good but it can be a bit starchy on the sauce end. The flavor though, is very spot on and authentic to those good places in Taiwan. For someone being far away from home (Taiwan) I can definitely see myself going there very regularly if I were to stay in Vancouver. The price is also great, but remember, get more people there so you can try lots of stuff on its menu! read more

A pleasant surprise in our (extended) neighbourhood! The Hot & Sour Soup with shredded pork was peppery but well balanced, the 5 Spice Beef & Pancake (served as rolls) was tasty with a touch of sweetness and the flattened dumpling stuffed with sautéed chives was simply made and delicately seasoned. My god, so delicious! Everything I've ever had at Kalvin's has been straight up amazing. The consistency is incredible- considering we have been going here for 15 years! I dream of the hakka eggplant, so rich and delicious with it's lacings of mint- that I happily eat it straight out of the fridge.. And the mapo tofu- so creamy with the custard-y sweetness of the tofu and the acidity of the chili, oh dear.... All of our family events are punctuated by several orders of the beef roll - which elicits swoons every time. My only criticism of Kalvin's is their volume - it can be hard to get a table. (Also I find the rice a bit soft, but that doesn't stop me from scooping up every last delicious bite at the bottom of my bowl, laden with browned garlic and green chili- so hungry just thinking of it!) The green beans! Don't get me started...! The other thing I love about Kalvin's is the service, so amicable and genuine... the staff are knowledgable and eager to please, and Kalvin always remembers us. If you need a substitution on a dish, no problem! (So unlike other Chinese restaurants...) They are light spirited and really just lovely people - and they make for such a welcoming atmosphere that we will always return. read more

The food is quite decent that I came back here the 2nd time right away on the following weekend. The first time I ordered their kung pao chicken, clams, and mince pork on rice. Their minced pork on rice is the best I have eaten in Vancouver. Kung Pao chicken was not oily at all. This is one of the must-eat pilgrimage restaurants for my family when everyone is in town. We even ate there once while the place was flooding -- water was seeping into the dining room and NO ONE, not us, or any of the other diners, made a motion to leave. If you eat at Kalvin's, I guarantee that the memory of his Taiwanese-infused Sichuan cooking will work itself deep into your subconscious. You'll find yourself yearning for it on days when you are far away from home and stuck in the dining wasteland of small town America. My mouth is starting to water just thinking about beef rolls, pickled mustard greens with intestines, stir-fried eggplant, mapo tofu and hot and sour soup that will make your ears burn. It's all served family style with a bottomless bucket of rice -- just like they do in Taiwan. It's hard to get a table there -- reservations are spotty, there are few tables and it's always packed. I'm happy to start writing about Kalvin's with my first review back from my disappearance. It reminds me of family, and friends, who I went dining with here. My recommendation - come with someone who is familiar with Taiwanese food! The place is small, with about 5 - 6 tables filled with large families chatting away, having great food. The most memorable dishes I could remember were the cold glass noodles with sesame sauce. It is rare that I taste something so tasty and full of flavour that is COLD. If you a fan of pork belly - you cannot go wrong here. It is perfectly cooked, topped with a thick layer of fat, and with melting in your mouth meet at the bottom. Once again, the flavours never lack. We ordered a spicy cabbage dish and boy did it have a serious kick to it. It was way too hot for me but many others really enjoyed it. Save the best for last - dumplings in spicy chilly sauce. I don't know if it was the dumpling or the sauce but I think it had to be a delicious combination of both. The skin on the dumpling was thin in texture, but not breaking and the filling was the perfect amount of chewiness. The dipping sauce was just the right amount of heat and then the after taste of it gave you a wonderful sensation of hotness but not too hot. We ordered alot more but I cannot remember everything or be able to describe everything to you. I believe they take reservations but you'll have to get lucky because space is limited! If you want a cool drink - they have very interesting sodas that you wouldn't normally find in regular supermarkets... definitely a bonus. read more

Quite possibly the best Taiwanese restaurant in all of Van, bar none. Despite being named "Szechuan," the focus here is mainly on Taiwanese dishes but they have a few szechuan dishes too. Being Taiwanese myself, I have really higher standards for Taiwanese food. All the Taiwanese restos I've been to in Van for the most part, have been unimpressive. Kalvin's is the first Taiwanese restaurant that I've really taken a liking too. All of the dishes we ordered were yummy and well executed! My last couple of reviews have been pretty Debby Downer, and today's was going to be no different until my dad insisted on an impromptu dinner at Kalvin's. I actually introduced my dad to the place about two years ago. He was a Szechuan chef himself for many years, so the fact that he actually pines for some of the dishes here should say something about the food. Kalvin's is everything you'd want in a neighborhood restaurant bundled into one spicy little package - it's small, family-run, service is friendly, and the food is both affordable and delicious. It's also one of the best places to buy frozen dumplings & onion pancakes in the city. Half of what constitues an excellent dumpling/potsticker is the dough skin that it's wrapped in. Kalvin's dumpling skins are rolled BY HAND - every single one of them. Make a reso or be prepared to order take-away, and bring cash too. Kalvin's is almost always busy, and for very good reason. Dropped in as a first-timer with my lovely Asian pal and her sweet husband. They ordered. Eggplant with minced pork in garlic and chill sauce. Luscious eggplant smothered in tasty bits; so good I was licking my chopsticks. But the winner is: smoked duck! Half a duck for $17.00. Exquisite taste, just amazing. Like smoky tea, tender and wonderful. We came here because my friend was craving duck - we stayed for the sliced fish in sweet and sour sauce. Slices of white fish smothered in a very good-tasting sauce; a taste surprise. Steamed black fish was so butter tender that we just scooped it up quickly and devoured it. String bean with minced pork was a touch overcooked; too bad, as the beans were very fresh. Chinese pancake with green onion was not to my liking, but dipped into the sauce from the steamed fish, it improved. Serving staff is wonderful. Joanne took our order as we waited for our table. great service my go-to place for Taiwanese/szechuan food/ favorite dishes are spicy pork/ beef with chili peppers , halibut with fried soy bean very affordable price for quality and quantitym hard to find parking small restaurant / family friendly but a little tight reserve first so you don't wait long if I had to choose 1 dish: pan fried black fish would I go back? Authenticly Taiwanese - from the simple, homey decor, to the smiles and warm welcome of the servers, to the selection of traditional dishes, this restaurant is a great representation of a taste and feel of Taiwan (without the humidity). The restaurant is small and can be cramped at times. However what it lacks in space and decor, it makes up in its taste and flavor. Kelvin is the master of Taiwanese cuisine in Vancouver. He has trained many chefs throughout Vancouver. We've tried numerous dishes and have been very satisfied. Some of our favorites are the drunken chicken, soy black cod, and Dong Po pork. Dong Po pork is pork belly braised in a sweet soy sauce until the skin and fat turn into soft, gelatinous state and melt in your mouth while the meat stays moist and full of flavor. It's served with pea sprout to help balance the richness of the broth. If you'd like to try authentic Taiwanese cuisine without flying to Taiwan, Kelvin's is the place to go. read more

Might not be really Szechuan and more Taiwanese, but this is a very tasty spot. The menu is very large, so it's easy to order dishes that might not be very tasty. This is definitely a place where it's better to come in a large group so you can order multiple things and share. As noted by other reviewers, the beef noodle soup here is pretty delicious and I would highly recommend them if you're a fan of beef noodle soup. I ordered the fermented red pork because I really wanted to see how well they prepped the pork belly and I was also amused that when I ordered it, the waitress confirmed with me that I knew it would be pork belly. Maybe people have ordered it and were appalled by the fat in the dish. I really enjoyed the fermented red pork, it had a perfect salty crusty flavouring to it. It is essentially a pork belly cutlet with great flavours. The XLB here are just average, the skin slightly too thick for my liking but I think I've been spoiled by the XLB at Long's. The beef rolls here are very well made and make great snacks if you're just walking by and don't want to sit down for a full meal. One thing that I'd like to come back to try is the fish head curry, and the hot pot stew they have. I always believe in the "When in Rome" mentality when going to restaurants. It's been years now, but my sister took us here after dining at this establishment with friends of Taiwanese origin. If it's good enough for her friends, then it's certainly good enough for me. Add to the fact that this place is always busy, even for lunch that one time my family couldn't get together for dinner, people know the food is good and authentic. Some of my favorites here include the beef wraps (Five Spice Beef in Chinese Pancake) before they became ubiquitous at all the BBT cafes, Smoked Duck, and the Fondue Spicy Pork w/ Organ Stew. This last one is not for everyone, but still, try the sauce over some white rice. One thing that is no longer on the menu is the Stinky Tofu.
