I didn't eat here (yes that's an oft repeated refrain, welcome to the medschool life in which I choose to drink my calories more often than not)... I did however, come sit on the lovely patio to study and avoid traffic. I enjoyed a Vino Verde (why yes, yes they did charge me the 1/2 the price of the bottle for ONE GLASS), however, the fast wifi, and the thick Chilled wine glass more than made up for it (plus it's a particularly CHEAP bottle of wine, so one glass was still very cheap). Love the pulled pork sandwich. The best pulled pork sandwich I've ever had. And this isn't a BBQ joint. Whole foods in Austin also have great pulled pork sandwiches. Also, the roasted chicken sandwich is awesome. Those are my favorite two. Manager was great and generous. I told him I was charged for a meal that I in the end paid in cash (the card supposedly didn't work the first time after it was swiped). Then, he gave me a free meal and a credit for $25 dollars worth of food. They have WIFI. And, they have beautiful people working there. Favorite place to hang out. read more

I lived downtown for a month (long, convoluted story) and tried different restaurants scattered in the immediate area. I'm a curious person. One day, I walked my bony self to Jo's to pile on the calories. Visually, Jo's is pretty - interior and exterior. Furnishings, lighting, and wall decor are very clean and stylish. It looks like they got a lot of their stuff from Urban Outfitters - and even has the same general feel and atmosphere. And for whatever reason, I'm particularly fond of the giant red "Jo's" ball located outside above the entrance. Ha. Staff is pretty cool. The clientele during the work day is a mix between downtown employees in French cuffs and polished shoes, as well as the cabbie hat wearing, tattooed crowd - all inhaling food with a shovel. Heh. * Tuna Melt - good, generous portion but it was cold * Homemade French Fries - were cold, so they didn't taste like anything * Drinks - not bad in sum, mediocre. Pretty middle of the road. Not a bad coffee shop, but I found their wifi network to be unreliable. My friend couldn't connect at all, and for some reason they've set up their wifi network so that it blocks some applications from working, including "ssh", a tool frequently used by programmers. I really don't understand why they would do this, I'm not aware of any other coffee shops which do, very annoying and completely unnecessary. read more

Wow, I must first start with the staff. Besides the girl who works there, the male servers walked around with bad attitude all over their faces and postures. I watched them as every plate they served, to regardless which group, they had long faces and acted like they were too good to be serving...Guys...that's not cool. Anyway, the reputed tuna melt I have seen mentioned on the reviews was in fact very bad tasting. The tuna had no flavor, and the bread was very strange--like a hard flavorless biscuit. It was the worst tuna melt I've ever had. The coffee was also very bland. They had a sign up that said try our new coffee brew or something...well whatever this new bean was...it was a bad one. As for the positive stuff, its a great location (watch out for the birds pooping on the patio) and the pancakes are really good! read more

Another 3.5 in my book. Their coffee is some of the best in town. Iced drinks like the Turbo are the unique offerings that make small business great. I think the service at the downtown location is painfully slow, if there are more than two people in line, its basically a 20 minute affair to get some coffee. While delicious when it arrives, the wait can be a pain some times. All in all, I still recommend. read more

I live 3 or 4 doors down from Jo's on 2nd St and I love it. My wife and I go to Jo's for afternoon coffee 3-4 times every week. We bring our English Bulldog (Chesty Puller) and he sit's with us on a chair or else in his big red stroller. Of course we are sitting outside! I have been happy with the food lately and the drinks have been spot on. The young guy that has been around lately brings Chesty a dog treat and water when we need it. This place is always pretty busy for breakfast and brunch - good coffee and some pretty darn good breakfast tacos. Cost... little high... Cool patio, but watch for the bird crap and they allow dogs to hang out so that get's a little annoying as well. Service seems a little slow honestly... had finished my coffee before my breakfast even came out and that kinda bothered me. it's still a good place to hit with some great breakfast food and when I'm in town I'll probably be back. read more

It was pretty crowded but plenty of counter seating so we sat in the funky stools, read the paper, drank our coffee (which came with free refills), and chowed down on a tasty breakfast of eggs, bacon and potatoes for me, and huevos rancheros for him. Yummers! Service left a little to be desired, but that might just be the format. I wasn't sure where to get a glass of water for example and ended up waiting in the order line again. Have always enjoyed this location. We have had breakfast here whenever we are in town and my only complaint is the birds that are strangely and frighteningly aggressive! The coffee hits the spot as does the breakfast taco and multigrain pancake. I got a taco with egg, cheese and avocade....simple but delicious and enhanced with some housemade salsa. Not sure how to remedy the bird problem outside...but that would improve the experience tremendously! read more

Stopped by this Jo's to meet a friend on a cold Sunday afternoon. It's normally super busy, but the whole town seemed to be hibernating because there was hardly anyone in this coffee shop or let alone on 2nd Street at all. First time to try the Hawaiian Green Tea, and I loved it. Almost like a vacation in my mouth. Which was much needed when running in from the freezing cold temps. This location definitely has a better selection of food than the other Jo's on South Congress...but I still think their menu is sub-par when compared to Austin Java across the street. I'll keep coming back for hot green teas in the Winter and Belgian Bombers in the Summer just to people watch. But will probably head to one of the other spots on 2nd if I plan to order a bite to eat. read more

My co-worker described Jos as a "trendy" coffee shop. I'm starting to see it. I go to Jos quite often because I work downtown. Just tell them you work dt during lunch and you'll get 10% off. I've tried almost ever sandwich on their lunch menu. Personally, I'd recommend the BLT, the chicken salad sandwich. Their Cuban is good too, a little heavy for lunch for me though. I've heard the burger is quality too. You really can't go wrong. The garden salad is awesome too. I REALLY like that they have a to-go pickup window. It is not just the fact that this is the best granola I have ever submerged in milk, scooped up in a spoon, and feasted upon, nor is it because they have simply divine coffee mugs and coffee to fill them, nor is it that they have a staff of nice, funky-cool, Austin-y people who are the types of folk I look at and think, "I bet we could hang." No, the reason I love Jo's so much is all of those reasons combined, plus the deep feeling of elated satisfaction that wells up inside me when I slide into a chair at the bar, I unwrap my napkin, and thank the Lord God almighty for this wonderful food. Jo's serves Cuvee Coffee, a Texas roaster that moved to Austin area a few years ago. Today I tried the Jo's burger for lunch. A great choice. Patty is a thick, certified angus, and is juicy without being too greasy. I aded cheddar and pickle to the standard lettuce, tomato, and grilled onion. The mustard is a tangy deli style--definitely not French's back yard fare. The bun is sweet, like Tavern's or Hill's. Fries are thick cut, but not "steak style." Tasty, but a tad over cooked for my taste. Overall, the place has a trendy, cool neighborhood sort of vibe. Almost makes me want to buy a nearby condo so I can hang out here. If only I were 20 years younger and a million bucks richer! read more

The worst service I have ever experienced. I ordered a hamburger with a fried egg on the same order as two friends. The waitress brought out one burger and was very confused when we said we had ordered 3. Eventually she brought out the other two and mine was missing the egg. Instead of bringing a new burger, about 15 min later she brought a broken fried egg on a plate. Then I realized it was a veggie burger. The waitress then disappeared and I could not tell her the mistake and by then it had already been about 30 min wait after order on a not busy day. When she brought the check I let her know that someone who ordered a veggie burger might have gotten a real one. She said she realized that about an hour ago and they cooked another veggie burger but never corrected my order even though they knew about the mistake for about an hour. Really unfortunate because I like the atmosphere here but will never come again. read more

Although I've had countless Belgian Bombers from the SoCo location, this is my first time at the location downtown. I wasn't even aware they pretty much had a full menu here! Salads, burgers, beer & wine and BREAKFAST!! I came on a Saturday morning around 9:45 and there was a small wait at the register. I ordered chorizo, egg and cheese taco with avocado and my boyfriend got the migas plate. Around $4 and $9 dollars respectively. We both ordered large Belgian Bombers too. We waited around 30 minutes for our food which is fair enough since they only got more busy while we were there. The food was spectacular. My single taco was very filling and the chorizo wasn't super greasy or paste-like compared to other places around town. The Migas plate was huge! The side of black beans may have been the best I've ever had. Very flavorful with a hint of spice. I highly recommend this place. You may have to wait a bit longer on the weekends but the food makes up for the wait. read more

Oh Jo's. I really wanted to like you. ...But after two visits to your downtown location in less than a week, I have learned my lesson, and will not be returning to this location. Four stars for the coffee, but everything else is lacking. The Spread: At a glance, the menu looks great. Tacos, burgers, salads, coffee... And fun variations on basic menu items, like the "Crazy Carl," a breakfast taco with refried beans, fried avocado, pico de gallo and cotija cheese. The Scene: Bustling, bright, well-lit, casual place with plenty of tables, counter space and outside seating. The Service: YIKES. The staff who take your order are friendly enough. But the service was S-L-O-W. The first time we ordered, we waited for more than 25 minutes for our food. It's only fair to acknowledge that their computer systems seemed down, so they were having trouble running tickets. But on the second visit, the service took at least 20 minutes. And what's more frustrating is that they got my order wrong on both occasions! On the first visit, they forgot to omit an ingredient, but the second visit, they gave me the wrong item entirely. The pancakes were delicious and they were totally worth the wait, and thanks for giving me a free coffee after your bus girl threw mine out as if people don't finish their coffees after they are done with their breakfast. While walking around downtown Austin, there was an amazing aroma coming from Jo's...we were instantly lured through the front door. I had the BBQ Burger, Fries; my husband had the Chicken Salad and Fries; and we shared a slice of the Chocolate Pie. All was delicious! The BBQ Burger was incredible, but the sourdough bun took the meal to a higher level of delicious-ness!! The chocolate pie had amazing deep dark chocolate flavor and the pie crust...AMAZING! $$$ - the food was good, but you definitely pay for such quality The only 'negative aspect' of our experience was one of the waiters, who was on the hairy side, had a tank top on, AND served us our food. It might not be a health-code violation, however, hairy-sweaty-armpits near my food does gross me out!! If it were not for the man with the tank-top ... I would have given it another star! read more

The iced turbo... why isn't this recipe stolen and used everywhere? Or have I been blind to it till now? Like, I want to move to Austin just to get it at a semi-regular basis. Jo's is doing more than coffee and snacks? Well, was dam well worth figuring out. The Wifah (that's STX slang for those that don't recognize it) tried Jo's with my sister-in-law while downtown a few weeks ago and has insisted we had to try it. Well, Austin has always been full of veggie offerings at most any restaurant, however, they are not always good veggie offerings. I had the veggie BBQ (that's right, BBQ is always capitalized in TX) sammich and an ungodly huge pile of fries lightly dusted with course sea salt....daaaannnngggg! It was a great tasting meal that someone really put some effort into making so close to the real thing I had to look twice. Lots of seitan and tangy BBQ sauce with a ice cold Sierra Nevada ensures I am coming back. read more

So glad we found this local chain while in Austin for a long weekend. We came here every morning and it was always packed. Walking in we were a bit confused as to which line to stand in and whether to order at the outside window or inside at the counter. The lines moved very fast though the and service was super friendly. She warned us that the Turbo Iced Coffee was very sweet and suggested we tried the Belgium Bomber Iced Coffee instead which is a 1/2 Turbo mixed with their Cold Brew. IT was AMAZING!!!! I'm biased. I have nostalgic, too-good-to-be-true memories of the South Congress location. It's the coffee shop I grew up with, the one I went to with my family. It's perfect and don't you say anything otherwise! This location? It's... different. More restaurant than coffee shop, more urban and less laid-back. Honestly, the food is very middle of the road, so I stick to the coffee. Belgian Bomber remains my go-to drink. It won't give me cavities like the Iced Turbo, but I still get in indulge my sweet tooth. The whole outdoor space is perfect. The wood bar adds a touch of color and warmth, enclosing the primary seating area but not cutting it off from the street. The best use of the wide sidewalk of the entire 2nd Street District. Inside is dark and cavernous. It just never feels properly lit, and the atmosphere is always hazy rather than cozy. I always choose to sit outside. read more
