I hate to be a Yelp warrior or whatever - but for the sake of other patrons I felt compelled to say something. I came here yesterday with my girlfriend and we split a chicken salad sandwich. As someone who doesn't typically eat chicken salad, I was unaware it could contain tree nuts. I took one bite, felt an unexpected crunch, and then felt my throat start to swell. My girlfriend asked a worker if she knew if the chicken salad contained nuts and she frantically exclaimed "oh no! I don't know!" before asking the kitchen. She then came back and said "it has pecans! Is that bad?" And I said "yes. Kinda bad" Luckily because I only had one bite and then proceeded to chew on a few Benadryl I ended up being okay and my throat and lungs were all back to normal in an hour or so, even if I had to spend my day in bed high on said Benadryl. If I had eaten any more of the sandwich though, I very easily could have ended up in the ER. All that to say - the menu does not make any mention of pecans being in the chicken salad, either in-store or online. Which is strange because tree nuts are disclosed in some of the other menu items. This feels like a bit of an oversight, no? Fellow nut allergy-havers: do you avoid chicken salad altogether? Am I ignorant for not knowing the risk of ordering chicken salad? I don't know but this did ruin a whole day for me and very easily could've cost me $2000 and a trip to the ER if I really enjoyed the taste of the sandwich. (Luckily I did not.) The service was wonderful! They let us know that the Spurs were sponsoring drinks (you just need to sign up for their email thingie), so free drinks! My boyfriend got an iced coffee, which he didn't like, and I got a Ronald Palmer, which was super refreshing! The breakfast tacos we got were forgettable and didn't have much flavor. I typically come into jo's a few times a week and I love it but had a terrible experience today. I came in to pick up my togo order, i asked the staff to verify my parking as I always do if i can't find street parking. The lady informed me they don't validate on weekends which i've never ran into. On top of it my order was wrong. I ordered the wakey wakey which i do all the time and they gave me scrambled eggs, not over medium. I checked my order and it was correct when i placed it. Jo's is iconic so we had to try it even though the overall Yelp rating is under 4 stars. We were greeted with a friendly, "Welcome y'all" from a young man with cool old school glasses and a mullet (!!). W ordered two Migas tacos (one would be enough for me, but definitely two for him) and I ordered the Double Stack. Not usually a pancake girl, but they sounded good! And we both had almond milk lattes. The lattes were good--nothing special, but not disappointing either. The tacos had scrambled egg, cheese, and pico. Said it came with tortilla strips, but there was no crunch in the tacos, and we didn't see chips in them. Wrapped in a flour tortilla, and W asked for the spicy hot sauce. Overall pretty tasty. The flapjacks were fluffy with a slightly crispy exterior. They don't put butter on them, which is good for us because W doesn't like butter (some kind of birth defect, I think...), and they have grass fed butter at the table. I ate half the stack and W ate the rest. Overall, glad we came! Cute, clean spot right across from the W Austin hotel where we stayed. Jo's coffee establishment is located in the heart of downtown Austin and easily accessible by foot and with a fun atmosphere. Walking up the customer is greeted with mini-gated entrance with minimalistic high and low tables thrown about. Walk on in and wonderful aromas hit the nostrils in force. The king of smells is obviously and rightfully so, is the freshly ground coffee. If your nose is able to sift through various roasted beans; eggs, tortillas and bacon raise their hands to be recognized. I do confess I've never had their food but it smells pretty "dog gone good." The white, open ceiling facility has a huge menu on the back wall making ordering a breeze however don't forget to check out the little "daily specials" that are on these little plaques. The staff is quick to help out and offer good suggestions when they're asked. I actually enjoyed the controlled chaos watching the baristas fly around operating grinders, ovens, toasters, milk frothing machines and you get the point. They do work quick however if you're coming in with a crowd expect wait times to increase as well. As for drinks the hot lattes can be outstanding depending on what you might order. That said, I've been to Jo's before so I decided to be adventurous and order the hot special. It was called "Spumoni Latte" with strawberry, chocolate, pistachio, espresso, milk and whipped cream. Unfortunately, it was horrible. The shot of strawberry syrup totally brought the drink out of balance to where none of the other flavors could tickle the palate, thus I'm left with a hot strawberry slurpy coffee concoction that a trashcan would reject. That said my girlfriend ordered an iced latte and it was outstanding. I guess the point here is I encourage everyone to step out of their comfort zone and order something different but also note not all creations might be to your liking. Jo's has a lot of fun swag including cups, mugs, shirts, you name it so you're covered if that's your thing. While I can't speak to the food, it smells great. While I did focus on the one bad beverage I had, that's the exception. I've had their coffee many times before and it's almost always on point. Not everything is going to be a slam dunk but we're all in search of that perfect wave and until we get in the water and paddle out, we'll never know what we're missing. This morning, I was seated with a friend and reached for the hot sauce for my taco. The moment I slightly twisted it open, it completely exploded all over my friend, in her eyes, hair, shirt, and the wall. When I told management, I was amazed their response was "if the hot sauce bottles are left sealed at room temperature, they'll explode because of the vinegar." They did not offer to comp or even replace her taco, nor expressed the slightest sympathy, making it seem as if we should have been aware this is something to be expected (?!?).
