Jose and Sons has yet to disappoint. Tonight my wife and I had a meal that was near perfect from start to finish. For drinks, I got the chipotle mango margarita while she got the sangria. Both were delicious, though I should say that I prefer the pineapple jalapeño margarita. We ordered the Chef's Picnic, the restaurant's feast for two, and it included 2 grilled pork chops, a piece of grilled chicken, flank steak, 2 corns on the cob, black beans, rice, and some sort of winter greens. All of the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked. The corn on the cob was coated in some sort of sweet queso. The winter greens had a ton of onions mixed in and, consequently, were my least favorite part of the entree. Overall, it was more than enough food for the two of us, and it was quite yummy. As an aside, when I asked for hot sauce, our server brought out four different bottles. The option to choose was much appreciated. We weren't planning on dessert , but couldn't resist after seeing the dessert menu. You cannot go wrong with the pan de natas, which is essentially bread pudding and vanilla ice cream. The bread pudding had a slight taste of coconut, a pleasantly crispy exterior, a wonderfully fluffy interior, and was less eggy than typical bread pudding. The vanilla ice cream complemented the warm bread pudding well. I also must mention that their 62 degree eggs (served during brunch) are now my favorite type of egg. While the ambiance and food of Jose and Sons achieve glamour and decadence, the unfortunate abismal service overcasts the experience in dissatisfaction, frustration and ultimately the absence of future visits. The location (previously other tex-mex restaurants) did get a pleasant uplift in decor and provides many uniquely attractive pieces of art. Additionally, the menu is extensive and the food was flavorful and appealing visually. The pricing is definitely higher than one would find in similar establishments, but could have been justified by its finer points above if not for some inexcusable shortcomings. While the pricing for food may be understood, $3 dollars for a fountain drink of 12oz is ridiculous. Couple that silliness with the fact that it takes 30 minutes to get a refill or that they "ran out" of both sierra mist and pink lemonade (on a friday night) and it becomes a frustration. The appetizer portions are very small and hardly enough to share (a $9 guacamole had barely more than the salsa cups they offer with chips), while the dinner portions are plentiful and taste much better than typical tex-mex. Now that leaves me to speak to the service: this was the worst service I have received in the last 5 years BY FAR. Additional salsa requested and never brought, order messed up and never fixed until multiple reminders, soda drinks were consistently empty (and at $3 each to remind you), multiple reminders about getting some boxes, never checking to see if everything was good after food was delivered (a BASIC waiting skill), check was incorrectly broken up (wrong orders on wrong peoples' checks), attitude for reminding on food order corrections, and all this with solid 15 minute intervals in between so having to wait FOREVER for anything. Very unfortunate given my excitement for this establishment opening less than 5 minutes from me and now knowing that I will never set foot in there again. read more

Love this place. Why? Because there are lots of gluten free options on the menu and they are CLEARLY stated. The waitstaff are knowledgeable about the gluten free options as well. I have had both dinner and brunch here and both times the experiences were fantastic. The bar tender certainly knows what he or she is doing. We went there for a friends birthday party and the bar tender made a coffee cocktail that was not the menu for us. The other cocktails on the menu, such as the hemmingway, was great, and I consider that a favorite. The enchiladas whether you get them with seafood or chicken are great. This is one of the gluten free meals if ordered with the gluten free shell. You get three enchiladas that are delicious and filling. If this is what you plan on ordering, don't fill up on chips because it is a copious amount of food. read more

I like!! Enjoyed sitting at the large circle shaped bar. restaurant had a very inviting, warm & colorful atmosphere! Very modern and definitely a southern-styled twist on some Mexican favorites! Drinks were strong and full of flavors- from the initial bitter taste to the sweet lingering after taste. I had a very nice sippable shot of tequila with an authentic Mexican palette cleanser/chaser (this is also what they use for their mix in the Bloody Mary: veryy nice spice- probably one of the best mixes I've tried! & I'm not a huge fan of Bloody Mary's, I have to be in a certain mood). Also, had a special margarita that the bartender made special for me after we chatted about the spiced margaritas but I like mine more sweet and sour than smoked or spiced- he immediately told me to give him just a minute and he would not disappoint! He didn't! Also had a mimosa.. Yes I drank quite a bit.. Aha anyways.. My friend had a couple pomegranate mojitos, strong with a nice after taste! Finally to the food! I ordered the huevos rancheros- I've definitely had better but it was indeed tasty and I enjoyed it. Wish it had some chorizo though, assumed it did, but should have read the menu more carefully, probably could have added it! My husband and I had dinner here one evening after taking care of business downtown on a weeknight. We stumbled on this district and were pleasantly surprised by the uniqueness. I love Mexican food but this place is Mexican with a southern twist. Clearly I'm a macncheese junky and can't visit a place without ordering it if it's on the menu. The not-at-all-complementary chips, salsa, & guacamole appetizer was unique & flavorful. The Macncheese was different with a strong smoked Gouda cheese & kale cooked into it. There was a mess up with our order where ham was accidentally added into our meal. I was certainly turned off & disappointed but the wait staff was very accommodating and bagged a 2nd order of macncheese to take to go. I thought that was extremely thoughtful & great customer service. The blackened tacos were tasty but the shrimp and grits were disappointing. We went there on a friday night with a party of about 16+. Our reservation was for 8:30, but we didnt eat until close to 10. Not anyones fault, but just to let people know that its not a great idea to show up with a big party and expect to eat right away. The drinks were flowing and people were chatting. They gave us chips and salsa to munch on. The chips were your typical corn (or whatever) tortilla chips. But the salsa was pretty good. not runny, not thick. They also brought out guac, which went well with the chips. We started off with the mac and cheese. That was a big hit, i think because it had bacon in it. Also had the shrimp app, was also good. Everyones main course looked good, and sounded like they were all pretty tasty. The soft taco dishes come with double soft taco layer, which seems unnecessary, and also the tortilla shells had some hard (dry) spots on them, so it wasnt easy to wrap them around the filling. We had 1 waiter for our big table. He did his best. But 2 would have been a lot quicker with orders/refills and what not. either way, its worth going back. maybe with a smaller crowd. I was up for checking out a new restaurant and stumbled across Jose and Sons. What can i say??? What a find! started with the guac (which is mixed with goat cheese) and mexican corn and then the enchiladas del mar. I highly recommend this place. Sat out side at hightop tables, but he interior space was beautiful and nicely decorated. I went on a thursday nigh and walked right in but i can see this place getting popular on the weekends fast, especially since its by the pit and crankshaft brewery up he block. I ordered enchiladas del mar and the shrimp were obviously undercooked. A J.V. Cooking mistake that left me unenthused for any more food. Stick with menu staples like chicharrones and waffles, elote, and grilled pineapple margarita... I have been twice now since they have tweaked their menu. They have added more shared plates and veered away from the traditional set-up of appetizers, soup/salad and entrees. Tapas is already overdone and remains underwhelming in many circumstances. The small plates here are too inconsistent in portions to pin point. The brisket appetizer is minuscule in size while the flautas could serve as a whole meal. Also miss the seasonal guac. We all make mistakes and it's OK to admit. Please consider returning to what you are good at. Staff can vary and definitely recommend making a reservation. Bring back Jose And Sons circa 2015 for the comeback of 2016! read more

I'm not sure I can sing any praises that haven't already been sung. Just know that if you get the picnic for two, you're going to be a very happy camper. Service was a quite slow, but I expected that from the other yelpers. It took a really long time to get drinks and then to get refills for our teas. Thank goodness for water carafes. Our servers were nice and personable, however. We sat in tall chairs at a barrel table. I wouldn't suggest this seating. The chairs were a bit too high for the table. Also of note for those who make habit of wearing high heels or other precarious foot wear: this little area is cobblestone. I can't imagine it's very easy to navigate with stilettos. But, I mean, just go. I don't think you'll regret it. You might even get to see a dog or two on the porch. read more

Yum! This place did not disappoint. Besides the difficulty parking, this is a great DTR location, tucked away from the normal hub bub of the main streets, but still plenty busy. Great interior with a warm, cozy feel- instant comfort. Professional, friendly service. Delicious food! Seriously, I was impressed. I had the skirt steak with blackened shrimp and it was incredible. Perfectly cooked meat, AMAZING shrimp (and I got 6! When was the last time you got 6 shrimp as a little side item or topping?) Fabulous black beans and rice. I wanted to lick my plate. I've eaten here twice now (once for apps and once for lunch) and very pleased both times. My most favorite item is the yucca. It has great garlic flavor and I find myself craving it. I don't think I'll be able to visit without always ordering that item. I do wish they'd provide complimentary chips and salsa, mostly because I now expect that at a Mexican restaurant, and we end up spending quite a bit here on food/drinks. One of my friends just moved to an apartment close by to Jose and Sons so we decided to stop by for dinner on a Friday night. We've walked by before on weekends and knew how packed this place can get so we were prepared for the wait times with no reservation. Sure enough, we were told it would be about an hour. No problem--we just went nearby for some drinks. We come back 1.5 hours later concerned as no one had contacted us that a table was ready. The hostess apologetically told us that the table she wanted to seat us at still had people. We were definitely frustrated now as several spots at the bar had opened up and there were SEVERAL open tables. She still adamantly told us the only way for us to be seated immediately was at the bar. Well, we didn't feel that this was fair as we waited 1.5 hours at this point for an open table. We opted to sit down and wait. Surprise--we were seated within 3 minutes at another open table. Now, this long of a complaint usually sounds like the start of an abysmal review, but Jose and Sons stepped their game up. We spoke to the General Manager regarding our experience in the hopes he could shed some light on the situation and he immediately agreed with us that the situation could have been avoided with better planning. He introduced himself and patiently explained their seating process. He then noticed we had ordered drinks and offered us our second round for free. We ended up not getting another drink, but it was incredible that he had taken the time to explain and apologize for their blunder. The plus was that the food was amazing. I've seen the chicarron and waffles (Crisp pork belly "cracklins," corn masa waffle, 62 degree NC farm eggs, agave-sriracha sauce, basil-mint oil $16) on social media and it looked delicious so I had to try it. The server cracks the eggs on the waffles for you at the table (so fresh!) and the flavor was amazing. Beware it is a little heavy, and sweet, but that didn't stop me from devouring the entire thing. We bright friends there for brunch with the expectation to have their waffle with chiccaron with eggs, like we had over the summer while at dinner. Unfortunately, they didn't have this as a menu item. Before we could be disappointed, our waitress, Glady, came back and said the kitchen/manager said they can do it for you all! Fantastic service! It was just as amazing as the first time! Glady took excellent care of us! Her positive, smile and energy was contagious! Not to mention they have THE BEST chips and salsa!! We have gone to jose and sons over the years. They seem to be off their game. Food wasn't as great. Service was in the poor category when compared to other options nearby. They were out of simple things like olives. If you serve vodka you need olives. Beer options were pretty limited as well. One of the signature drinks was pretty uninspired. A couple of the small plates were really great (Brussels sprouts, pork) corn is unique, but only 2 small ears for 4 people. Steak was average at best. Don't give up and we won't give up. read more

Well I have to dock a star due to some very poor service from Marco. I went back to this place after having such an amazing meal last time. Again, the food was AMAZING. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. The food never fails to be delicious. The wait staff (even last time) needs to brush up on their people skills and certainly on their server skills. Marco only checked on our table one time during dinner and we had to ask for the check because we sat for so long. The food is what keeps this place going. It would be amazing if management would work on the wait staff a bit. That's my only suggestion. The atmosphere is great. The food is great. read more

Great first visit. Food was good (with the exception of the appetizer) and the service was excellent. Started with Tostones which are flattened plantain slices, lightly fried, and topped with pimento cheese, bacon, and scallion. To be honest, they were pretty lame and very poorly executed. The plantains were totally under-ripe and had no flavor at all. The pimento cheese was ok but there was only a tiny dollop on each; definitely needed more. The bacon tasted like cheap Sysco bacon and they used too large of a piece on each one so it dominated and drowned out the other flavors. They need to use better quality bacon (maybe dry rub it with Mexican spices) or perhaps pork belly, and I think it would have worked better texturally if it were crumbled rather than a large slice placed on top. The complimentary chips and salsa were good. Chips were fresh. Salsa was fresh and had a lot of cilantro (which I love). Boo got the Crank Arm barbacoa. It was excellent. The meat was perfectly tender, moist, and flavorful. Black beans needed salt and could have used more flavor (bay leaf, cumin, etc.), but overall the dish was great. I got the pork chop. Again, the meat was moist and flavorful with a good char from the grill. Sauce was tasty. I didn't love the "hash." It was actually a mash; which is an important distinction. And again, they used that sub-par bacon which tended to overpower all the other flavors. Call me crazy, but the hash/mash would be far better without any bacon at all. Also, I didn't find any poblanos in there... They would have enhanced the flavor a lot. Boo also got the Vallarta 77 cocktail which was excellent. I drank beer. The service was excellent. Every person we interacted with had a smile and happy demeanor. We were greeted with a smile by the hosts, our server (Angelina maybe?) was friendly and attentive and gave recommendations. Boo and I agreed that it didn't hurt that she was really easy on the eyes. Irrelevant but, just saying... Good first experience and we'll be back. read more

Had a really good dinner here. Our appetizer of pimento cheese and bacon tostones were absolute heaven. My wife's barbacoa was some of the best braised beef I've ever had. It was a solid 10 minutes before my server stopped by the table and brought some water, at which point I ordered the flautas, a chile relleno and a cocktail. I never received chips and had to ask for a refill on water. My cocktail arrived after my appetizer was eaten and my dinner was delivered. Jose and sons is simply one of the best! I'm always happy and completely stuffed when I leave! Last night my friend and I had the spicy pineapple margaritas and the LA Familia. We couldn't decide so this dish gave us some of everything! It included steak, chicken, porkchops and all the "fixins" We gushed to our waitress about how delicious it was and but we had to get to go boxes because it was SO much food! We chose to sit outdoors at the barrel tables so we could enjoy the weather and people watch around the station. The maragritas were the perfect choice for a hot evening. I love Mexican so I really wanted to like this place! I'll make my review quick. Food was good. I feel it is very overpriced, but I knew that going into it. I had the Enchiladas Del Mar and the shrimp were delicious. The sauce was also spicy and flavorful. I also ordered guacamole, which was good. My margarita was decent, but not anything to brag about. Biggest issue here is the service which was pretty damn bad. Granted, I was with a group of 20 people. We were told when booking the table that 20 people was no problem. However, they had only ONE waiter serving the entire table! It took him a good 20 minutes after we sat down to take out drink orders. Drinks came out basically one at a time and water refills were few and far between. My friend ordered the guacamole and never got it. Surprisingly, the entrees were the fastest thing to come out. We were there 3 hours for a dinner. Ain't nobody got time for that! Overall, I might be willing to try it out again with a smaller group and maybe after they have some time to refine their service. read more

I've eaten at Jose and Sons twice now and both times I left feeling more than satisfied. I've had the same waiter both times as well, and I wish I remembered his name because he was a great server all around. The Enchiladas Del Mar have been my go-to, something about them is seriously addicting. The day after I eat here all I crave is this meal all over again. I've also had the guac, pimento cheese plantains, and have tried a taste of someone else's crispy pork belly waffle. All were delicious and of great variety. Next time I'd like to try something new, but it's going to be so hard to turn down those enchiladas. They also have several craft cocktails, and I approve of the few I've had so far. As far as the prices go, Jose and Sons is on the higher end for Mexican food, but it's not your typical TexMex joint. I like to describe it as contemporary Mexican with a Southern twist. We finally decided to give Jose and Sons a try last night, and it was an interesting experience. Let me start by saying that this is really a wonderful restaurant - the atmosphere is great, the circular bar is fun, and the food is unique. . . But it's always packed on the weekends. This is one of the reasons we've been reluctant to go. So, we made reservations just to be sure we'd have a place to sit. When we arrived, it was indeed very busy but because we had reservations, we were greeted and seated immediately. Because there were just two of us and two seats opened up at the bar right as we arrived, we offered to sit there and save them a table. The host was grateful, and so we sat down at the bar. I had a Paloma and my husband had a Strawberry Margarita to start. Both drinks were very tasty! Well made, great balance. We also ordered the ceviche and hands down, it was the best ceviche we've had. Period. Anywhere. At this point, we were really excited to try the mains and put in our order. Then we waited . . . and waited . . . and waited some more. We were forced into drinking a bit more than we bargained for and were getting very hungry. No one came by to apologize for the wait or give us any indication that our food was eventually going to come! We finally asked one of the bar tenders to check on our order, and when he came back, he said 5 minutes. 10 minutes passed - still no food. We gave up, paid our tab, canceled our order and left. But here's the thing. We will go back. We were not totally disappointed and probably would have held out longer for the food had we not been so hungry, or if someone had taken the initiative to let us know about the wait so we would have had less to drink. The wait staff and bar tenders were very, very busy, but were also very nice and even though we didn't get our food, I want to stress that I don't blame them at all. They were really doing their best given the crowd. ADVICE: Have a reservation, maybe go on a weeknight when it's not as crowded. If it is crowded, be prepared to wait and pace yourself appropriately. Oh, and for the sake of all that is beautiful and holy, order the ceviche. It's amazing! read more

I try to always leave positive reviews, but Jose and Sons had some serious problems when it came to their food. We were next door at Tasty Beverage Company having beers when we decided to stop in a Jose and Sons for dinner. We walked in on a Saturday evening around 7:00pm and luckily had no wait for our table. We were quickly seated to our table and our server came over. She was friendly and explained the concept of the restaurant - southern-inspired Mexican cuisine.Two of our party ordered a beer and it arrived promptly. I wanted to add that the atmosphere and decor looked great. We started off with an order of guac and their version of tostones (fried plantains with a dollop of pimiento cheese topped with bacon). This is where we experienced some issues. We asked for no bacon (as I am a vegetarian and another at our table doesn't eat much meat) Much to my dismay, the tostones arrived with bacon. Being the only one at our table who abhors bacon, i forewent the appetizer and let the rest of my party enjoy. They were unimpressed by the tiny portion of pimiento to the huge piece of bacon (that may be a plus for some people) Now for the troubling part: our entrees. After we ordered, they came out quite quickly. Two of our party ordered the collard wrapped tamales on suggestion of our server. While the dish sounded great, both portions arrived cold and lacked flavor (needed some serious seasoning!) I ordered the market chile relleno. It came out a few minutes after the other meals were delivered (not a big issue) but it was also lacking in the flavor department. Super hot on the outside and cold cheese on the inside. At some point our server came over to ask how the food was. We all hesitated and contemplated sending it back. When we asked for our checks, the server offered free desserts for some of the mishaps which did serve to remedy some of the issues, but the main problem is this is a restaurant where the food doesn't quite stand up to the prices. read more

This is one of my favorite places to visit for nice mexican food. They are that perfect balance of being a reasonably priced mexican place, but fancy enough that it counts as a night out and you can bring out of town guests with you. I am a fan of all of their appetizers, especially the pimento cheese sliders and their seasonal guacamoles. Again, here is a restaurant that is great about gluten free options that are still yummy and there is a wide selection. I've had dinner at José and Sons twice, and the food was great both times. They are happy to accommodate any dietary restrictions, serve generous portions, and the atmosphere is fun and inviting. I was really looking forward to a great meal, given all the accolades in Yelp. We arrived around 5:15, just before a concert at Red Hat. The restaurant was empty, save for all the staff standing and milling about. I think the hostess got a little annoyed that I didn't want to sit where she wanted to put me, by the kitchen, but given that it was empty I figured get the table that *I* wanted. It took a while (~10 min) for someone to take our drink order, and we ordered our food at the same time. My friend ordered just the guacamole, which she said was bland, and I was very underwhelmed with the Enchiladas del Mar, with corn tortillas to substitute for the flour ones. I may have just died and gone to heaven. But seriously, if there is anything I love, it's a good chile relleno! But let me start from the beginning. Atmosphere = amazing. Guacamole = baller. Springsteen margarita = the boss (obviously!). Now to the good part. Dinner. I had the chile relleno and wow. Best choice of my life....besides kids and marriage, of course. Husband had tamale wrapped in greens and it was so good you'll slap yourself. I wish I had room for dessert but I couldn't pack anything else in (that's what she said).
