From the moment I walked into her salon, I was greeted with a warm and welcoming smile, which immediately put me at ease. What impressed me most about this hairstylist was her extensive knowledge and professionalism when it came to coloring and adding dimension to my hair. She listened intently as I explained what I was looking for and made some excellent suggestions that I hadn't even considered. Her attention to detail was truly impressive and it was clear that she was incredibly passionate about her craft. ( Something I've been struggling in Austin) coming to her with a dry damaged thin hair thinking she couldn't do much. Since coming to her, my hair has become bouncier and healthier than ever before. I have typical salt and pepper hair that has more salt on top plus a large white swatch in front of my hair. Natalie added low lights so that it perfectly blends in. Now I'm truly "pepper and salt". She applied a Kerataste treatment so my hair is super shiny. I'm trying to grow my length and she managed to both trim a little from the bottom while adding layers. This review has been a long time in the making! I have been in a hair-relationship with Sarah Contey for over seven years (when I moved to Austin!). She has been patient during the times I "colored" my own hair until I finally wised up and allowed her to work her magic with balayage. Sarah is someone I have trusted with my hair from when I was searching for someone who knew how to cut long hair (really long) to when I finally donated to locks of love, tried out some short bobs then let it grow out again and explored some color. She goes the extra step in not only learning and growing in her craft, but also teaching or offering input to other stylists when asked. I don't know what I would do if I ever had to move away as I have followed her to new salons! I went to this salon regularly for my entire 2.5 years living in Austin. It was great! It feels upscale without being pretentious/unapproachable. Although it is on the higher end with pricing, I was never disappointed with my service. A lot of that is because of my stylist, Mathew. He was so wonderful, always welcoming and easy to talk with (which is critical when you are spending 2-3 hours in his chair). He listened to what I wanted and was able to achieve it and then some. He was willing to give recommendations but would never pressure (not that I ever resisted, once he did my hair once I trusted anything he recommended). I always felt beautiful and well taken care of when I left his chair. I was devastated when I had to move and stop seeing him. I still haven't found a stylist that can work the same magic he did with my hair. I highly recommend going to see him! read more

So, I'm pretty past due with this review so let's get. this. done. Up until a few years back, I never used to get my hair done regularly. Just getting it cut every 6 months to a year was a treat. Then, finally, I decided I wanted to get some highlights to hide my old lady grays. A trusted friend recommended Sarah Contey, because she knew I was super scared to do anything to my hair. I could not have been more lucky to start my hair education with her! I have and will continue to follow her anywhere. She has taken great care to keep my looking like the 31 year old I am, not the 80 year old my hair seems to *think* I am. She has now helped me walk the professional line at work just perfectly with browns, coppers, reds, and now an awesome cherry-cola red situation that *still* hides those early onset grays. All the while, my hair has stayed super shiny and healthy. She is dedicated to her craft and has taught me so much in a few short years, as well as her excellent assistants who have gone on to be amazing stylists themselves. I've been going to Jose Luis on 6th for 15+ years. WOW that longevity and loyalty even surprises me! I love everything about the salon -- the level of service is usually flawless and Bill and Jose are always so warm when they greet you. Without question, I owe my entire skincare routine to Linda Hinkley. Linda is a master esthetician, and she has been my skin care guide for over a decade. Her product recommendations are absolutely spot on, and she never recommends more than she thinks I need. I also appreciate the high quality of the lines she uses (Yon-Ka, Dermalogica, and Skinceuticals). From facials, waxing, and the occasional spray tan, Linda is absolutely the best. I trust her recommendations implicitly and won't let anyone else near my brows! Linda is uncompromising and fastidious about skin care -- exactly the kind of person you want examining your every pore. She is a skincare snob in the best way. I get my regular hair care elsewhere, but I do love the ease of scheduling an occasional blowout at Jose Luis. I've been here twice (all during COVID) and I have felt very comfortable and the staff is extremely accommodating. Leslie has cut my hair twice and she's done a great job. I've been meaning to go in for some coloring but I haven't had a chance. So I can't say much about her coloring but if it's as good as she cuts then I recommend her. They have late appointments which make it easy to feel COVID safe. I also made an appointment for my mom here and they were sooooooooooo helpful. I explained how my mom was uneasy to go and they suggested a dry hair cut and found me a stylist who was very kind and patient with my mom. I am writing this while pretty mad to be honest, but I waited a day and I'm still upset, so I figure it's valid. I've been going here since I moved to Austin nearly 3 years ago and I loved my stylist. While pricier than I was used to paying, she was so great, I continued to go and pay. Recently I received and email that my stylist was no longer there but they wanted an opportunity for me to see another Senior Stylist to keep my business at no cost to me. I was hesitant but my previous stylist was now an hour away from me, and the convenience factor coupled with a free $75 haircut tempted me. It's been awhile since I had a fresh haircut since I just had a baby so I came armed with a photo that basically looks like the hair I normally have, but haven't had time to get lately. (So it wasn't like I was going for something out of reach and my hair had gotten pretty long so I know I had plenty to work with). The attached picture shows the photo I game in with (blonde) vs. what I looked like when I left yesterday (brunette - me). WHAT IN THE ACTUAL EFF??!!! I've been a very bad Yelper during the pandemics, but for the first time in awhile I was able to get out and 'be normal'. The stylist I previously went to is now at this salon and lucky for me, it's down the way! I've always driven by and been in the building, but not in the salon. To my surprise, it's huge! The staff is friendly with booking appointments over the phone and will let you know about new 'rona protocols. It's great to see them taking it so seriously. There was plexiglass where you check out/in and they installed some separators near the hair wash station. The staff was wearing masks and to be honest, it was awkward to be wearing a mask during a haircut but after 4months of my hair not being taken care of, it was time. They were constantly cleaning and taking care of the area. There was also multiple hand sanitizer areas as well as separations where the stylists were. I really enjoyed the salon as it was so clean and the staff was great. Will be back soon for my next appointment! read more

My regular stylist retired recently, so after a bit of research I decided to see Sarah Contey here today. I had balayage and a cut done, and she did a fantastic job on both! My color seriously looks like an inspiration picture, and the cut perfectly compliments my natural texture (which is not an easy task). If I could give more stars I would! The salon itself is clean, and very nice. They are definitely taking the Covid situation seriously, and I felt comfortable there during every step of the service. People have done everything from jumping up and down screaming and trying to figure out the name of the actress I look like. Warning! Was referred to this salon for a big family weekend where we needed wash and blowdry services for 8 of us plus three little girls whom were flower girls . The actual stylists were very nice however we were quoted rates up front by the manager when booking and they failed to mention all of the little extra costs like actually using a curling iron to style or the shampoo. They charged us $90 for each little girl! The receptionist on duty could was cold and insensitive when we questioned this which made us feel even more uncomfortable . Cannot believe this kind of person with no people skills is working the front desk. We are in Austin a lot for weddings and sadly as nice as our stylists were ( and expressed their embarrassment on how the receptionist responded to us) , we will never go back. Either way, this salon is much too expensive for the quality they deliver. I get my hair cut and colored by Lawrence since I moved from Houston to Austin (luckily he did too!) He is fantastic! I have really thick hair which requires a good bit of layering to keep it from poofing out in a broom/Christmas tree like fashion at its current length (long bob). Lawrence did a great job! No weird thickness - just smooth and flowing. He also does my color which is awesomely bright red right now! He is very intuitive with color and will mix up a shade which makes your skin and eyes look amazing. He is also a great stylist! I definitely recommend him! read more

Stay away from Jose Luis Salon Let me tell you what happened to me at the "great" Jose Luis Salon. I wanted to treat myself to a haircut and to get the silver/grey hair I've had trouble doing on my own. Treat myself turned into I got robbed! I called and made my appointment stating I need someone who works with short hair and I want to color my hair. I said I have salt and pepper hair and want it to be all salt. The first problem, the appt made was not correct. I arrive, I'm offered a drink and told where the dressing robes are located. I was told by the stylist I need a bleach out and the appt I currently had was not enough time to do the color. They had another appt at 3:30 and I said IF you can match my silver I'll come back. The stylist said, of course we can match it. So I came back. Immediately offered a drink and the robe was already in the stylists hands ready for my arrival. Many hours later my pixie cut was NOT the color I was told they could match. Basically they took my dark salt and pepper hair and made it light brown. I was tired, knew the people remaining, as I closed the salon, were not the people to talk to about my disappointment and the $385 charge. I called the salon on Tuesday, I was told the salon was closed on Monday, I spoke to a manager who spoke to the stylist after my complaint. She said she would get back with me right away. Many hours later, and two attempts to reach her, she finally called me back. She offered to fix my hair complimentary because my hair represents the salon and they want me to like what was done. She said the stylists mentor would be there on Saturday to assist. Saturday arrives, I park in the garage 10 mins prior to my appt and the access door to the elevator is locked. There was another person waiting as well. I walked around looking for stairs and was unable to find any (dangerous) so I called the salon at 0958 told them I was in the garage and couldn't get in for my 1000 appt. The receptionist thought the door would open at 0900, but wasn't sure. She said she would send someone down to get me. Meanwhile, at 1005, someone arrived in the garage who had a key access code and unlocked the door. I showed up to the reception desk and asked for the receptionist I spoke with who said she would come and get me and she pointed to someone else, like she was supposed to come get me. So, already Saturday is a fall. I am not offered a drink, not given a robe, and sat in the stylists chair to talk. He asked how many times I'd washed my hair, I said twice, he said ok, the toner has been washed out. What?? After only two washes?(This is what I'm thinking) I was told he could match the color and I gave him alternative colors, blue silver or purple silver...and again, the color was all light brown with the only silver along my hair line in the front. The manager said she would call and follow up with me on Monday because the salon was getting an award. I called Monday and left a message, no return call. I called back and was told she left for the day. No return call on Tuesday either. So incredibly disappointed in this salon, in the fact I have a pixie hair cut and was charged $385, they did refund some money, but not enough to cover my dissatisfaction. Turns out they charged me to blow dry my hair. The manager casually said they shouldn't have done that, it's part of the haircut. PIXIE HAIRCUT! WTH? Obviously the salon doesn't care they charge a fortune to NOT do what they say they can do. Separately, follow-ups are not something they do. Lastly, they do not seem to care about the customer who might not be the wealthy patron they are used to serving and who happens to be a disabled veteran. Epic FAIL Jose Luis Salon in downtown Austin. As a follow-up, the manager, Nicole, refused to discuss this situation after I posted my review. Additionally, she used a reception to convey the message that I didn't talk to her directly about the situation when she failed to follow up with me on Monday as she stated she would last week and failed to return my phone calls. I requested through the receptionist, since Nicole refused to speak with me, they refund my money for the bleach and color and she refused to do so because of the post. Stay away from this salon apparently they think they are all sunshine and rainbows and don't believe they're capable of creating dark skies. read more

I've been coming to this salon for many years but never again. I booked a haircut & color one month in advance only to find out on the day of, the stylist could not do a haircut. She says she can only do either a haircut or a color not both because she has such a full day ahead of her. She told me my appointment time was earlier than what I booked with reception. The reception ppl did not call me to let me know the time was changed - by one of them! Had I known, I would have come in earlier. My complaint is with the receptionists working here. They should have had the decency to call me & let me know they moved my appointment! Instead of taking the blame & apologizing, they act like nothing was wrong! Best Covid protocols ever. This salon is spacious so you are not shoulder to shoulder with the next client. For the shampoo bowls and dryers, they have large dividers between each. Everyone wears masks all the time. Plus, they have excellent customer service and do a fabulous job on my hair. I come for color and cut. Never again. I went in for a balayage ombré and came out with a full head of bleach blonde (fried!) highlights. I showed the stylist several pictures of what I wanted and she said no problem. It took her 4 hours to do my hair and it usually only takes 2. I was wondering what was taking so long but I trusted her since I showed her the pictures and I thought the salon had a good reputation. When she blow dried my hair I was shocked to see blonde steaks in my natural roots which I spent over a year growing out for the perfect ombré look. I went back the next day to get it "fixed" but there's really no way to fix this...besides waiting another year for the damage and roots to grow out. Beyond disappointed. This review is LONG past due as I have been getting my hair done with Sarah for years now. 5 years ago I moved to Austin, Tx from SF and anyone who is BLONDE knows just how frightening losing your stylist can be. Over the next several months I casually asked girls, who had hair I was jealous of, where they got their hair done. (True story) 3, THREE girls all said Sarah Contey and that was enough for me! After a consultation and an instagram full of jaw dropping photos I was, and will be, a long lasting client. While Sarah is new to Jose Luis Salon her talent and skills can be seen all across Austin! When I sit in her chair, I sit back, relax, and let her take the reins because my trust is fully in her insane ability and knowledge. She is legit. She'll never steer you wrong and will tell you what is going to work best for not only your hair and it's texture, but what will work best on you. She'll be honest and have you leaving the salon feeling your best, most confident self. I don't think I've ever trusted anyone more with my hair than I do with her and that's saying a lot because I love my hair and I'm protective of it! I could not recommend anyone more! I got extensions done here at the W 6th location. The Hot Headz glue in ones. They lasted me a little over 6 months. I absolutely loved them! I've also gotten trimmed here a couple times. Nothing too crazy. I've been to both the W 6th and Lamar location. They always do great work. Since I moved to Austin, I've needed a new hairstylist. I made the the mistake of allowing my brother to play with my hair, causing it to be really damage and hay-like texture. He bleached it twice and it was bleached twice more before that by another hair stylist. I was trying to achieve a balayage look but with my dark hair, transitioning to a lighter tone would be difficult. I also was in desperate need of a haircut. My virgin hair that was soon overly damaged and dead, needed a lot of maintenance. I googled "best salon in austin" and came across Jose Luis Salon. I called as soon as they opened and asked they put me with someone with a lot of experience. I was given Lawrence, 21+ yr experience. Also on the same day! I was really scared because I have always been referred to hairstylist and I was with my last hairstylist for 7 years. I was really taking my chances with Lawrence. But oddly enough I trusted in him. And I'm glad I did. My hair is no longer rough and now healthy. He took out the blonde in my hair and toned it and made it look very natural. He also added highlights to blend in. He then cut my hair and left it just how I asked. He did more than I expected. He's nice and did not disappoint. For me taking a chance, I'm glad I did.
