Food- Hit or miss! I came here as a teen for the first time in 2007 and had the chicken quesadilla. It was so good. Probably the best chicken quesadilla I've ever had. I also went yesterday with my husband. We shared a chicken quesadilla and a beef quesadilla. Both were excellent. I also got a side of sour cream, French fries and chipotle mayo. The fries were not typical fries. They were hard and very crunchy instead of crispy. They reminded me of potato stix instead of fries. I've also had the empanadas in the past which were okay. I didn't like the enchiladas that I got a few years ago and I definitely did not like the skirt steak (it was too salty for me). I love that the chips were warm and fresh. Service: They were clearly short staffed. We went on a Monday night around 7 and there was a 20 minute wait. People were definitely leaving because they didn't want to wait. It took a little while before the server came back to take our order but she did at least give us chips and our drinks first. She was very attentive once our order was put in. She was also friendly. What on earth happened to this place? I live out of state now but was always a big fan of Jose Tejas, and insisted we must visit while we were driving through NJ. After the meal we had, I was embarrassed for making the suggestion. I'm a vegetarian, and they used to have an entire menu with vegetarian options. Not anymore. The menu was super limited now, and what we ordered was abysmal for the price. We started with chips and salsa, so we also ordered guacamole for $8, and a little cup of ranch dressing. The cup of dressing was 1/4 of the way full (see photo), and we weee charged $1 for it. I can see if you're not ordering food to charge for something like that, but to charge someone for dressing that's going on their food is a really lousy practice. For an entree, I ordered the vegetable fajitas and my husband ordered a steak. The fajitas might as well have been called a side of raw broccoli, because that's what they were. $18 for one slice of pepper (see photos--I'm really not joking). My husband said the steak was "alright." $25 for an alright lunch. Oy vey. The waitress brought everything we asked for, and nothing more. As someone who worked in service, I can tell you that when I received an order for an alcoholic drink, I would also bring the table a glass of water. No water until we asked. I asked if they had any hot sauce, and the response was, "Yes, why? Did you want it?" Nah, I'm just making conversation. I mean, come on. The chips and tortillas were both overcooked. The empty margarita glasses were left on the table while we drank the second round drinks. Total for lunch with two margaritas each was $125 with tip. I would have said something, but we were headed to an event that afternoon and didn't want to get caught up with a conversation with an indifferent manager because that's clearly who is running the place. read more

Nothing beats Jose Tejas flavors. They are unique and I love them. We went for lunch and as always were not disappointed in the food or service. The manager however is another story. I will not get into it here but I will hope he was just having a bad day. Not a nice guy at all. I will definitely be back because I love the place and because if he keeps acting and speaking to guests the way he does much longer he won't be there next time I go. Good riddance pal. read more

JT's was once one of our favorites, but hadn't been there in over 3 years till tonight. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. The menu is much smaller, and many of our favorites including catfish and crawfish, are gone. What kind of a TEX MEX place with a Creole background drops crawfish? I got a veg fajita which was lousy. All it was, was broccoli and a few onions. No colorful peppers like before and the plate was not sizzling. When's the last time you saw a fajita not sizzle? The tortilla seemed like they were a week old and had to be pried apart. Sever bought extra onions but could not furnish peppers- something to do with the kitchen. Back on Sunday the 7th, the day of our savior Tom Brady, the snow was burying the land so tremendously that my buddy and I braved the harsh weather to bring some delicious food back to our wives. Like soldiers storming into a field of bullets, we dodged snowflake after snowflake until alas we made it to the front doors. As we entered the establishment, the smells got my tastebuds excited and the decor of the space had me thinking, GEE GOLLY GEE this tex mex place is going to be FIRE. There was a large congregation of servers, literally 10+ by the kitchen area so we assumed that with their lack of customers and the massive snow storm upon us then we would surely be taken care of with the highest regard of customer service. Obviously we HAD to order the guac and were graced with some complimentary salsa and fresh tortilla chips. . . . . When you get guacamole, salsa, and chips and then wish they'd only brought you the chips you know you're in for a real treat... the type of treat like when you're at the movies, ravenous, and go in for a huge bite of pop corn only to realize that you've just broken your tooth from a MASSIVE popcorn kernel instead of fluffy and buttery and delicioushy amazingness, RUSHING TO THE ER BECAUSE YOU CAN'T STOP BLEEDING AND THEN THEY TURN YOU AWAY BECAUSE YOUR OBAMACARE HAS BEEN EXPIRED FOR YEARS! I digress, I liked the chips. Now let's talk about the margaritas. Children please cover your ears. I don't mean to sound like an alcoholic but I've had my fair share of margaritas, all price points, from the bougiest Manhattan lounges to the most remote beaches south of Puerto Vallarta where you can't see any key chains or sombreros being sold and GOOD LORD we need to teach these bartenders to respect the holy beverage which is the MARGARITA. Whoever made the margaritas on that day, the day of the GOAT that is Tom Brady, didn't get the memo that the sour mix isn't supposed to be at the ratio of 99% mix to 1% tequila. Naturally my compadre and I summoned our waitress over and politely requested to purchase 2 shots for our margaritas to try to resolve this catastrophic disaster. Quick side note on our waitress, god bless her soul. We all joke about those people that work in the service industry that have no place there, JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL - THIS WAS HER! The most bland, nonchalant, non enthusiastic, being to walk the earth, I felt like a year of my life was sucked from my soul, like a dementor or something, every moment I had to look her in the eyes. At one point I stopped looking her in the eyes and felt more warmth staring into the noreaster outside than her heartless, medusa glare. But she had nice tattoos. Let down by the guac and blatantly store bought salsa, we figured we'd be basic B's and get some quesadillas which, full disclosure, were pretty good. I loathe dillas without grilled chunky chicken, and these were more on the pulled sloshy mush, but who am I to judge? Then as we were getting to the diet sodies stage trying to choke down the last slice, we asked the waitress (LORD TOM BRADY SAVE ME FROM THE MEMORIES) if we could order some food for our famished wives back home. She informed us that we had to order online... or whatever TF she said (TOM BRADY SAVE ME WITH YOUR WITCHCRAFT FROM THE THOUGHT OF THAT MEDUSA LOOK). FLABBERGASTED we both looked around at the LACK of fellow diners and asked her if we could just order with her to go but again she told us that it was their policy to order online. Trying not to be an absolute A-hole (this review ruined that effort) I didn't, I couldn't, I resisted beyond the TOM BRADY powers that be NOT to request a practical and or logical explanation for this CONSIDERING the ENTIRE waitstaff was standing around doing literally nothing AND THESE PEOPLE MAKE THE MAJORITY OF THEIR MONEY THROUGH TIPS (ie. making things happen and being somewhat pleasant to interact with). She seemed flustered as if she had to tend to the 30 other tables that she DIDN'T HAVE and walked away. My buddy succumbed, went on their online ordering platform and funny enough, the physical menu of offerings that day, February 7th the day of our savior and king Tom Brady, were not offered online! Once our lovely waitress was informed of this dilemma she rolled her eyes, huffed, and stormed off after saying she'll see what she could do. God (TB#12) forbid we want to give more money to this blessing of an establishment during hurricane TB #12 (NE Patriots RIP) and further more increase her tip amount. She storms back, takes our order, and as she tried harder than Patty Mahomes to get away we requested some beers for while we waited. We had to pry what beers they offered out of her, again, as if her other 30 nonexistent customers were aggressively waving for her attention. In all seriousness, get another job if customers asking for more food and drink is that much of a struggle for you while tending to your ZERO other tables. Outdoor seating is huge and somehow they still have an hour wait! Incredible. My boyfriend and I enjoyed our time here. The staff was superb and our waitress was really nice. We ordered some frozen margaritas to start. They were tasty! One is enough to last you throughout your meal. For appetizers, we ordered the guacamole. Fresh and creamy. We then ordered our entrees. Blackened chicken which was a tender marinated breast of chicken, blackened on the outside, spicy and juicy on the inside, and served with a Cajun marmalade sauce. As well as the Beef Faijtas which came with skirt steak marinated in a secret blend of spices, grilled over mesquite wood. I would recommend ordering the fajitas, burros, or enchiladas at a place like this. You definitely get more for your buck and they specialize in making this cuisine! read more

Nacho came in no time with tasty handmade salsa. In appetizers, we ordered Cajun Popcorn-Blackened Chicken Fingers. Blackened preparation is Jose Tejas's specialty and no surprise, it was very good. Probably my new favorite mexican restaurant. Absolutely loved the service and food here. I have been wanting to try this place out for a while but was never in the area. It's about half an hour away but thankfully my fiance and sister and I were doing some wedding planning in the area and decided to stop by here for lunch. We loved it so much we went back the following weekend. Service was on point during both visits. Drinks, chip, and salsa were constantly refilled even without being asked to. My fiance got the grilled chicken which was cooked to perfection which is rare to find. We were all happy with our meals and even happier with the price. Really excellent introduction to this place. My boyfriend has been singing its praises for ages. People were starting to line up before it opened. Good sign. The decor is kitschy cute with some country twang. I approve. Chips are a highlight. The chips are fresh and warm and they refill them when asked. The appetizer shrimp was transcendental. Really really good. The entree was decent but paled in comparison to the shrimp. The menu was a bit limited possibly post Covid. The menu itself is a blend of Tex mex and Cajun. This could be disastrous but wasn't. The jambalaya side was disappointing but it apparently used to be better. I'm definitely going back and I'd give it a solid 4.5 stars if I could give half of one. It won't change your life or make you contemplate moving, but the food and service are great and it's well worth a visit. read more

I haven't found a Mexican restaurant that I actually like the food AND drinks from. The garlic chicken and the mango margaritas are a must! Now I will warn you don't EVER go here STARVING because your minimum wait time will be an hour. There are no places to sit either. You are just standing in a crowd (PRE COVID). I have no been since COVID so I'm not sure what the procedure is now but I have driven past and noticed a packed parking lot. I've visited this location several times before & always had a great experience both service & food-wise. This last time, not so much. Food & service were both fine, but what really put a damper on everything was the end of my experience. My partner & I ordered their delicious pastelitos as an appetizer & we wanted to take an additional order home to our family - I was told by my server that in order to make to go orders, I had to open up a separate ticket online & order via their website. Strange, but ok. Their online menu was completely different than their in-store menu (I've attached both), & the pastelitos were not online. When I made my server aware, she still said I could only make additional take out orders via their website & if the pastelitos weren't there, I couldn't make the order. I had an exceptionally poor experience here today. I planned to order a drink, appetizer, and entree alone, with a friend joining me 10-15 minutes later for only a drink as I dined. I explained this to the host but was told that only a "complete party" would be seated. There was no wait for a table. I clarified that I was dining alone and was told that if they seated me at any booth or table, they would physically "not allow any other" individual to join me later, as it would mean that I was seated before my entire party was present. I asked for a manager who was rude, dismissive, and who only reiterated that they would physically not allow my friend to join me ten minutes later if I sat at a booth or table alone. I left the restaurant and I'm sorry to say, will never visit this establishment again. I also sent this concern to the corporate office. read more

I sadly need to write an update on my review... My wife and I used to be regulars of this place, coming here once every 2 weeks, sometimes more often. This is all pre-covid. Even post covid, we have come a few times. Unfortunately their standards have gone down, they slimmed down their menu pre-covid, and got rid of their most popular items. I hope that they owners read this review! The need to bring those items back. One of my favorites used to be jim bowie filet, but now its a jim bowie skirt steak. The filet was always amazing, but now its gone. They also changed their skirt steak. It used to be very flavorful, but now it just tastes like blackened char. Their steak fajitas used to be the talk of the town, but now they are meh. Ive also gotten catfish from them more than once, and its 100% frozen! and it comes out very mushy... I don't recommend. I finally tried their sangria this part time that I went, and wow was I disappointed! I tried it frozen and regular. Both were beyond bitter and had no taste... I do not recommend... This used to be the place to eat, but they care more about their bottom line than their customers, and it is starting to show. They used to give us new drinks of water or soda whenever they were down to about 1/3 full, now we have to beg several waiters for water over and over again. They currently have a very limited menu, and 30 tables outside. I really mean limited!!!! Chicken or beef fajitas, and 3 other entrees.... 2 apps, 5 drinks listed, 3 salads... Really not worth it! The only reason that we keep coming back here is because people keep buying us gift cards for here. Otherwise we would probably stop coming! They need to bring back their previous standards! Bring back their old menu! Ive complained to the managers several times, but they say that the owners don't care, they care more about the bottom line. Is there anything better than Jose Tejas?! As not a HUGE Mexican food fan, this is my favorite. Please don't come at me, I don't mind Mexican food, I am just not OBSESSED with it like all my girlfriends are. My go to order is the spicy margarita and the fajitas (half chicken, half beef). It is to die for and it gives you about 2/3 meals out of it. You always have leftovers! We have never been disappointed when we go to Jose's and always leave full! Get there early. Jose's is ALWAYS PACKED and they do not take reservations. I would recommend going at 6pm or earlier for dinner if you are a party of 4 or larger - you never know what the wait may be! read more

They have outdoor and indoor seating, but the menu is limited now and they only have one type of tacos (salmon). I was surprised they don't have chicken or meat tacos. They do have fajitas and enchiladas, the guacamole was great. The margarita is also very good. Great concept for Mexican food. Came here for lunch and was not disappointed. This spot is super close to my work place so decided to give it a try. The decor and service is up there and the best thing is that the food comes out hot out of that kitchen; a bit of a way but it is worth it. The flavor of the food is amazing, has a bit of cajun flavor in there which I love. I would definitely come back for dinner to see what the ambient is like and if the flavor holds (I am sure...lol). Upon entry, If one of your party of four is 15 minutes behind you, you CANNOT be seated in the place regardless of the fact that you are standing there looking at 30 empty tables. Come on now. IT'S A SALOON! Not the smartest business move considering the guests may want to order extra beverages and appetizers while waiting. Also there is nowhere to sit but to go back to your car. The benches were taken away. hence leaving many guests no choice but to eat elsewhere I have been a loyal patron for as long as I could remember 18 years or so. The prices have doubled and you receive half the amount. Most of the menu has gone since the pandemic started. Time to bring it back. Most important part...food is hit or miss depending on the day. I have visited 2 X in the last week and a half, and the first time was ok , during the week. My most recent visit this weekend made me make the decision that I will not return again. The food was not good. I pretty much see many patrons share my sentiment because I NEVER saw a weekend where at 7 pm you didn't have to wait for at least 30 minutes. Went back to Jose Tejas after 2 (Pandemic) years and everything was just like before, great food, great service, great prices. A couple if things have changed. The menu is smaller, less items, and now they have take out. Previously you needed to order what you wanted to take home, and then ask for a doggie bag to take it home. I know, makes not sense. But now they do have takeout. Great! And the prices are still really fair. Me and my wife had a hardy dinner with appetizers and we shared a Frozen Strawberry Margarita as they can be pretty strong and I was driving back, plus we got some takeout for later. Cheap, delicious Tex Mex food is most welcomed with good company. Both times eating at José Tejas has been an enjoyable experience. As you sit down the waiter brings chips and salsa. Bonus points! I am a huge fan of the beef enchiladas smothered in red sauce served with rice and beans. I've ordered it both times and left a satisfied. This time I tried their popcorn shrimp and tacos. The chef battered and fried the popcorn shrimp in a Cajun seasoning that was bland. I wouldn't order again. However, the taco, not filled with cheese or lettuce/tomatoes (downgrade), had a pulled beef that made up for the lack of cheese and inside fillings. The interior is designed to replicate the Tex Mex aura of our southwestern United States. Mission accomplished. Staff quickly seated us, took our order, brought the food, and attended all other needs during our dining experience. Solid job. Will be returning with more friends. read more
