I will say that Jose was absolutely a pleasure, so excited to share the story and history of the winery. I visited in March 2024, but after writing about a recent disappointing wine tasting at another winery, I felt like I had to share my experience at Joseph Phelps, which was amazing. We arrived a little before our reservation, and the tasting room was just getting ready to open, but the staff welcomed us in with a glass of wine. The winery is upscale and elegant, with a beautiful open view of the vineyard. It's in a quiet, secluded area, so if you're looking for a private and relaxed experience, this is the place. Our SOM was great -- knowledgeable and very professional. We had plenty of time to enjoy the wines at our own pace and weren't rushed at all. Since the patio seatings weren't taken yet, they even let us sit wherever we wanted while checking out the winery. This is the only Napa winery I've been recommending to friends and family without hesitation, and it's one of the few wineries I wouldn't mind visiting again. read more

Among the top three of my favorite wineries in Napa! We came here because my friend is military and they have an amazing discount for active duty (2 complimentary founder's tastings!) and thoroughly enjoyed our tasting experience. I loved the small touches that make this feel like an intimate and customized experience, from the way our wine educator Leslie immediately greeted us by name upon arrival to the personalized tasting menus. Also, this was our first winery of the day and I'd barely eaten anything so I really appreciated the delicious snacks (miso truffle butter with olives and snack mix including macadamia nuts) that we were able to munch on while sipping wine over an absolutely beautiful view. Our educator walked us through the interesting history of Joseph Phelps as a winery from conception by Joe, an ex-military construction magnate who saw the enormous potential in Napa Valley while building wineries in the Bay -- all the way to present day, with the recent acquisition by Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton. She also had us sample the Vin du Mistral in two different glasses and to my surprise, they tasted completely different based on the shape of the glass. As a white wine girlie, I loved that we got to sample three different whites (sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and a bonus dessert wine at the end) so that the tasting was almost 50/50 reds/whites. We also got to try the winery's flagship 2022 Insignia blend (retails at over $250/bottle) , which interestingly has a completely different composition each year based on the harvest and ingredient quality. Highly recommend this winery on your next trip to Napa if you're looking for a serene and elevated tasting experience. Great wine with great views. Our host/sommelier was great at explaining each wine and the history of Joseph Phelps. We opted for the Founder's tasting. It was a more laid back tasting as our host would explain each wine and then leave, only returning to pour the next wine. There was also a small snack tray provided with nuts, olives, and bread from Model Bakery - it paired well with all the wines. Our favorites from the day were the Chardonnay, and the insignia red. We ended up buying a bottle and were also able to denote a tip while paying through their iPad. read more

I did not make the arrangements for me and our friends who enjoyed Joseph Phelps on our recent trip to Napa. So I cannot speak to those particulars on cost or booking. What I can briefly say is WOW! This place is gorgeous. When purchased by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) like two years ago, the style feels upgraded, beautiful woods, very high end and warmly luxurious. Robert our guide through our tastings today is excellent and really an exceptional story teller. I am glad he is with us. In the room that we sit, there is a display of every wine Joseph Phelps has ever made. A smaller winery like theres produces less than 65,000 bottles annually, most going to their members. It is raining during our visit, but the is OK because this space is so captivating and inviting. Definitely tagged on my Yelp account to visit again. Joseph Phelps is on a beautiful property up the hill, and at 11am on a Friday, there were already quite a few parties there but also ample parking, including free EV charging! My parents are members and set up a Founder's Tasting for us and some friends. When you walk to the entrance, you're greeted with their Sauvignon blanc to start. We were set up with Robert today, and he was great - he's a sommelier, so he knows his stuff far beyond just the Joseph Phelps wines, but he was still very approachable and easy to talk to. Before the tasting on the beautiful covered patio overlooking the vineyards, they brought us some bites to go with the wine. They don't have a restaurant but do have a chef who does some heavily food paired wine tasting events. Our snacks today: - Garlic and miso powder butter for the bread - Focaccia - Baguettes - Hurricane rice cracker mix: amazing macadamia nuts - Italian olives: house brined, very briny and interesting In addition to the Sauvignon Blanc, the tasting included: 1. 2022 Pastorale vineyard Sonoma coast Chardonnay 2. 2022 Bootlegger's Pinot: I didn't realize they made 6 different Pinots 3. 2021 Vin du Mistral: a GSM from the central coast 4. 2022 Napa cab 5. 2021 Insignia: their signature proprietary red blend We were lucky that it was a perfect 70 degree day in June (for once, it wasn't sweltering!). The staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and the customer service was outstanding. The tasting room and views are incredible! We indulged in the Taste of Place Experience and it was a WOW at every level. Meredith, our Estate Ambassador and Tod, the Executive Chef provided an exceptional wine and food pairing. I'm generally a Chardonnay lover and I was impressed by all the wines poured . Every course was delicious with a wonderful presentation and complimented the wines perfectly. Came to Joseph Phelps today on a complimentary tasting gifted by a friend and had the best time. Jordan, our sommelier was super kind and nice. He showed us to our area and poured all our wines. I enjoyed that he came to check on us frequently and took the time to memorize our names and talk to us. I ended up taking home a bottle of the 2021 Pinot Noir and 2019 dessert wine. I'm not a super "dry" wine girl so these plus the Chardonnay were my favorite of the tastings. Joseph Phelps is a beautiful winery with a stunning property and super kind staff. Our experience at Joseph Phelps winery really showed me the world of architecture and fine wine. The property was beautiful, with a view clear down the Saint Helena Hills. We had an exclusive educational fun experience on wines and the art of production which was a finished work on this year's harvest. Our host Meredith was gracious and educational and so nice! *edited my review in response to management's comment* If your "handling it with grace" means lying to your customers on having a maximum 6oz per person policy, then I would never want to be on the receiving end of such grace. If you indeed have such policy, then share it here and make sure it has a management approval date prior to our event date. If you don't know how to handle the situation without lying to your customers or fausly accusing your customers for being intoxicated, then you should add that to your training. The way you handled the situation was disgraceful to say the least. I would give no star if possible. We went for food and wine pairing , which was $350 plus tax and tips (menu below). For that price range you have certain expectations but this place felt short in every way. Mediocre food and wine. We were also told they have a maximum 6oz wine per person policy so we were not able to revisit any wine. Never had that in any other winery before. Our party was 18 people and they only assigned us 1 host, which was clearly not sufficient. read more

Still family owned by the Phelps family since 1972, the quality of their Cabernet really and Boudreaux style blends really speak for itself. It is not just about how many 100 points wine they produced over the years, but the commitment to quality and the experience at its blending classes and terroir' tastings and the beautiful view of the estate vineyard that make Phelps really the special place in Napa! I appreciate the flagship Insignia, but at the $75 price points the Joseph Phelps Cabernet is the crowd pleaser and probably the best price to quality ratio! Fathers passing on legacies to sons passing on legacies to grandchildren. That's what they do at Phelps. They make wine. But they create legends as well. $150 for a private tasting may seem like a lot. $400 for a bottle of Insignia might seem expensive. It's not. I know: why even review a place this elevated on LinkedIn, Google or Yelp? We're not talking about pizza to go. This is the best that Napa can offer. Don't take Joseph Phelps lightly. It's more than wine. It's a complete narrative that is the quintessential American Dream. This is wine tasting for those who care. I can't tell you more. The service was terrible. The server refused to serve wine to one of the girls on my table just because she needed help to get off the car?! The server was accusing her of being intoxicated. My friend just came back from the Asia and still had jet lag, she was taking a nap in the car. After we arrived one of the girls was holding her hand while she was getting out of the car since she was not fully awake yet. Does that mean she was intoxicated? After my friend talked to their manager, they agreed to serve her wine since she didn't show any signs of intoxication. But we all lost our appetite, we stayed there only because we didn't want to ruin the day for the bride to be. Later they refused to provide wine revisits for our table while other people got 3 rounds of revisits. They explained it's California law, are they telling me the other two tables were not in California? I flew all the way from Portland to San Francisco just wanted to have fun with my friends, but they totally ruined it. On top of the bad service, we paid $350/ person not including tax and tips. Also, the food came in tiny portion with 1 oz wine for each pairing. If you need help to get out of the car stay away from this place. If you don't want to ruin your day, your vacation, damage your friendships stay away from this place. read more

Although I do love to go during the off season, having gone just as they were picking was a treat. Its been a while since I have see the grapes on the vines. As a member, they communicated well via email exchanges to make sure I could get a appointment for tasting. Its covid times and I totally understand that this is a busy time and everyone wants to get in. Joseph Phelps was one of our gold standards of wine that we compared all other wines too. Joseph Phelps Insignia and Caymus Special Selection. It was the gold standard. They were accessible to non-celebrities and as good as the inaccessible Screaming Eagles or Scarecrows or Opus Ones. (In my humble opinion). It never disappoints. Ever. We enjoyed the tasting - very corporate feel but the guy who poured for us was very nice and knowledgeable. It's a must visit for a Napa visitor in my opinion or at least buy a bottle of Insignia. JPV has one of the most stunning views of one of its vineyards. Words cannot describe it in any way, form or shape correctly. You just have to come see it for yourselves, really no joke. I believe this beautiful prime real estate was chosen by Mr. JP because Mr. JP was a seasoned real estate developer for the wineries and vineyards before he became a winery owner. I guess drinking great wine sure beats building great wineries!! We had an excellent time tasting both their reds and whites. My favorite was their Insignia red blend.
