I really like this place and nearly gave them 5 stars. It is a mexican restaurant that you order what you want and there is no free chips or table service. Wow! We felt we were back in Mexico again. The food was excellent. Jose was by himself at lunch time ( and it was extremely busy) so I'm not docking him for the long wait, trust me it was worth it! Jose came to our table prior to making our meal to double check our order. After we were done and the restaurant cleared out Jose came to our table. He first asked how it was then apologized profusely for the wait. (His help had called in) Not only were we impressed with the food but the customer service!. We had the tostadas, bean burrito, quesadilla and tacos( I seriously wanted one of everything since I could see him preparing all the dishes!) We stumbled on the restaurant and so glad we did. Who would have thought an authentic Mexican restaurant can be found in downtown Petosky! DEFINITELY a hidden gem. read more

I have had this place on my radar to check out in Petoskey for a long time. I finally made in there last night and was extremely disappointed. Arrived at 6:20. Placed an order for 1 chicken quesadilla. I was told 10 minutes. My order was finally ready at 6:55. My quesadilla was wrapped in aluminum foil like a burrito. I questioned if I was getting salsa and sour cream like the description on the menu. I was assured it was all inside the quesadilla. Okay, no problem. Once I sat down to eat, it started dripping milky liquid. I opened it up and there was no salsa, sour cream or even cheese. I'm guessing the stuff dripping out what what was left of the sour cream after it melted. Seriously disappointed. Taco Bell would have been better not to mention faster and cheaper. Next time I'm craving Mexican food, I'll head over to Happy Tacos. read more

Thoroughly unimpressed. Chips and salsa were not complimentary. Paid $4.60 for chips and salsa (which she ended up giving me pico. Would have rather had salsa. And the chips were definitely not fresh). The woman that took my order was very unfriendly. I felt like I was bothering her by placing an order. Ordered a steak burrito, and it was bland. It had very little meat... Mostly beans. As far as being authentic, the menu misses the boat. Very unhappy that I wasted $17 on lunch here. I would have rather ate somewhere else. My colleagues and I were in town for just one day and were looking for a lunch spot that was warm and comforting. José's was perfect! I'm giving 5 stars for two reasons: A) The food - everything we had was delicious! The order at the counter style is quick and convenient and our food came to the table quickly. This is home-style, authentic dishes. I was immediately on board for the sopes (which are hard to find down where I live). B) The people - the staff and chef are delightful! We were the first customers of the day and they were cordial and inviting. Plus - I left my scarf there and she's sending it to me. So nice! Tasty hole-in-the-wall joint. Proprietor was pleasant. Food we got was to-go and held up on the way back to the hotel. My three tacos were delicious, with a slightly crispy corn shell on a soft taco. The burrito my companion chose was wrapped up well and tasty, too. The salsa on my tacos was a bit spicier than I would normally choose, but didn't detract from the experience. read more

I've been to this restaurant twice. The first time was in 2015 when I was visiting Michigan with my father & the food was great ! Now in 2019 I have visited again. Based off of my two visits, Jose's was not a crowded restaurant, however a popular one. I never had to wait to get a table. The restaurant is located in downtown Petoskey so it might be hard finding parking on busy days but I've never had a problem. When you first walk in you place your order in the front right away, then you are assigned a number and you take your number to your table where you will be served. When I visited the restaurant recently there was one guy working ALL BY HIMSELF. He took orders, answered the phone, made the food, and handled the money for every customer ALL BY HIMSELF. I just think that is amazing. I'm not sure if that was Jose or just an employee but I have no words besides "amazing." The food was delicious. My mouth is watering thinking about it now! Also the man who was working there and doing everything ALONE was super nice. You can tell he has a really good heart & he is a very diligent worker. We visited for the first time because of the good online ratings. Unfortunately our experience was very poor. Chips and salsa are priced extra; not too typical for a Mexican restaurant when ordering meals. Girl working did not know the price for cheese and sour cream (both extras) to go on our fajitas. The wait for our food was a bit lengthy considering we were the only patrons in the restaurant. When the meal did come the order was wrong. The waitress was totally rude ... treating us like it was our fault! Based on our experience I would not recommend this place. read more

Holy bejeezus. I am so thrilled I found this place. I have walked by this tiny corner-in-a-corner for years thinking it must be the same as every other Mexican place in the whole of northern Michigan (bland, gross, sometimes offensive). But the other day as I was walking from the Grain Train to McLean & Eakin, I thought, "Ingrid, that smells delicious..." -- and at $3.50 for a burrito, I risked nothing in trying it. I should have bought everything on the menu. This is Los Angeles-style, authentic California-Mexican. Jose's, I love you. (For those wondering: Jose's is primarily a take-out joint -- if you want to eat in, eat in -- there are tables. But this is an authentic family-run taqueria/tortas place -- you don't come here for a sit-down meal, as some disappointed Yelpers apparently did.) (Please, Yelpers, if you can't see from the outside that this is not a sit-down restaurant..there is nothing anyone can do with you.) This is my new favorite go-to up here. No more soggy eggplant sandwiches or sad over-mayonaised tuna for this girl! Are you craving REAL guacamole but don't want to make it yourself? Do you want pico de gallo but the fresh stuff you just bought at toski sands was rotten when you opened it? THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU. (Sorry for shouting.) Also, the tamales are terrific. And the burritos. And the out of this world tortas. I often wonder if it's worth the drive from Harbor to go to, for example, Twisted Olive, which has some of the best food in the area. But Twisted Olive is expensive, and it's a whole 5-hour night getting there and back and taking for ever and sometimes you might have a waiter who does not tell you the whole truth about the menu, and I'm a good cook anyway, I could just stay at home, so...some things are worth the drive in from Harbor Springs, and some things are not. We stopped here on the 4th of July. We're not from the area but saw the great reviews. We waited awhile for our food, but could tell by the way the whole place smelled like delicious food that it would be worth the wait. Plus any good place will have a long wait on a holiday so you have to expect that. Jose was very kind in checking on us as he was making orders as fast as possible. I had the salad which was incredibly flavorful and tasted fresh. I appreciated that it wasn't overly huge. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his tacos. It's just a great blend of flavors. La Senoritas and Taco Bell can't even compare to this real, authentic, family run Mexican restaurant! All the food is on the cheap side (especially for Petoskey!), but it isn't for a lack of flavor, that's for sure. I've had almost everything on the menu and I can't say a word of complaint about any of it, though some (like my mother) find it to be a bit on the spicy side. Just finished eating here, and while it does stick to authentic tradition, I found it only okay. I had the chicken tacos, enchilada, and tamale and found everything really dry.
