So this was a nice surprise. We were in the bookstore when the person I was with said it was time to eat. I asked the woman in the bookstore if she could suggest a good place to eat. She asked what we wanted and my friend said taco's. She smiled and said, "you have to try Jose's. He's right around the corner. We eat there all the time. ". She was right. The food was delicious. And of course, when we asked for the hot stuff he was happy to oblige. We will most definitely be back.

My family's favorite restaurant of all time in town. Love the food. Nothing has been bad here. My boys love the tacos, my grandparents used to split the burrito dinner and were filled up, I love the enchiladas. What's great is that everything tastes homemade and super flavorful. Also love the many choices of meat (or no meat for me). Always clean and bright! The owner is super friendly and is very accommodating to our sometimes demanding family members. Thank you!!! read more

The tacos, as tiny as they are, are pretty good. The problem is the looonnngggg wait when they aren't even busy, and the price for what you get. Plus, they don't provide chips & salsa when you eat in- it's extra and very expensive. This place could easily be 4 stars and packed with customers everyday if they learned how to put a taco together quickly and fixed their pricing. In the mean time, I'll go to El Ranchero for good mexi in Petoskey. read more

The service here during my visit was friendly, but I was rather surprised with how meager the portions for my tacos were. I ate two tacos in approximately 40 seconds. The veggie taco had salsa and peppers only, where are the rice and beans?? The chorizo was delicious, but again the taco was finished in about two bites. Each taco had a single tortilla that was lukewarm at best. The guacamole was good, but for the high price it wasn't worth it. Fill the tacos up with more or lower the prices and this place would be a gem! read more

Best tostada I have had. even better than Cozumel authentic tostadas. on Cozumel Mexico. meats they use are premium and wife ordered enchiladas and they came with red sauce, not to her liking and the chef -owner came by to check and he immediately remade without red sauce and a smile. we did not have chips so no input on those. read more

Our family has been a faithful fan of Jose's for eleven years! The fresh and palate pleasing guac and sauces are the real deal. I have never ever strayed from the steak burrito smothered in verde sauce. My wife will attest to the Mexican steak pizza. For dessert, I order a pair of pork tacos; hands down the best tacos I have ever had. Besides the food, we love the owner and chef Jose. He always stops at the table to check on us and makes sure everything is up to par. read more

My husband and I are die hard Jose fans. We have been enjoying their food for years and don't plan on stopping. You walk in, order at the counter and have a seat. The food comes out in a timely manner and the staff is friendly. Some of our favorite things are the nachos, burritos, quesadilla, rice, beans and guacamole. They have a few hot sauce choices and they are in a great location. read more

Jose's is absolutely delicious, prepared with love and care and quality ingredients. Perfect flavors. Portions are small in comparison with chain restaurants but are more like what you expect having dinner at someone's house --Jose's house! Also he was cool with our dog being on the patio which is always nice. read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in town. It is the only one to serve FRESH food. You can watch the chef cut the avocado for your guacamole. They fry their own chips. La Ranceria's guacamole tastes like it comes out of a tube. I bet their chips come out of a bag. I love the shrimp fajitas. They taste great! I wouldn't waste my time going anywhere else in town! read more

What a great place! We moved from DC, which had lots of great Mexican food options, and have been underwhelmed with Michigan's offerings, but Jose's is fantastic. Really fresh guacamole and pico -- always a good sign. They take care with the food and clearly have a lot of pride in the quality of their offerings. Highly recommend! read more

I really like this place. The horchata (rice drink) is amazing and they make it fresh every morning. I love the tacos, especially the pork tacos because they marinate the meat and it adds a lot of flavor. They're also super fast, so it's a great place to eat when you're in a hurry. read more

We visited Petoskey for a few days and dined here on July 3rd. The food was very very good! As others have mentioned, the guacamole was probably the best that I've had. Our family frequents Mexican restaurants and the Chili Relleno was the best that I've ever had! read more

The wait was long-40 min for our food, kids was served 15 min before ours. The fajitas (veggies) were under cooked and the portion very small for price. Nachos and salsa tasted like what I could buy at a grocery store-they didn't make their own-how can that be authentic? On the other hand-the margarita was very good. The owner asked us how many in out party-twice-we waited 10 min to be seated when there was 3 open tables. They ran out of the "fixings", I overheard another table say. Wouldn't visit again. Over priced-paid $50 for what should have been $30!! Bummer! Gave 2 stars only for the margaritas! read more

Very disappointed in the restaurant. Walked in & was quickly greeted, which was good. They had 3 menus on the counter. We grabbed one to take a look at & was disappointed by the menu selections...which weren't much & were quite pricey. There was 1 person in the restaurant inside but it was 2 pm when we stopped in. We decided to take our business elsewhere as my husband didn't even want to try the food after seeing the limited menu selection & prices. read more

We found this to be a great place for lunch. 5 people, right at $50 including sodas and tax. Really liked the tamales (had one of each - the pork was great, the others good). Loved the homemade salsa verde! Wife had chicken nachos - very generous plate. All three daughters he versions of Quesadilla - also quite good. Order at counter but they served us at our table. Friendly, clean place. Not upscale but if you want very good food at a more than fair price, highly recommend. read more

I love joses. They have a great location and friendly atmosphere. The service is always good. I have never been disappointed by a meal at Josie's, but I recommend the chicken dishes over the steak dishes. My favorites are the chicken taco platter, the chicken burrito, and their chips with guac and pico de gallo. Its a solid place to go for fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine read more

We ordered one each of the specials. Came on a plastic plate with grease from frying. No beans. No rice. No chips. No salsa. A couple of sprinkles of lettuce and cheese, but no sauce. Be warned that EVERYTHING is a la carte. Even a $7.99 special had three taquitos, no more. It wasn't good and the place was a dive. The Coke tasted like brown water. Ice machine didn't work. Crazy that this Mexican food eatery with a small yet delicious menu sits within a 42,000-square-foot building that formerly served as an equestrian center. Now it's an eatery inside several rooms - a part of the largest distillery in Michigan. The BIG room, on a colored, swirling and polished cement floor is decorated with couches, picnic tables, a large screen for videos and corn-hole boards and other games. My spouse and I ordered a quesadilla filled with chicken, avocado, peppers. onions and cheese ($16). YUM. Prepared on a 10-inch tortilla, it was served with limey-tasting sauce of sour cream in a tiny ramekin. We picked it up at the window in the long hallway on the side of the distillery and ate at a picnic table with our bottles of Mexican Coke and Lime Jarrito in the big hall. Although the price is a bit more than we usually spend for a top-notch quesadilla, we probably will return for fish (cod) taco $6.00. The only major drawback is the distance between the parking area and the restaurant and distillery. It's up a myriad of steep steps, although there is a drop-off area near the building for those who are physically impaired.

One even mentioned threatening to "Go ski somewhere else" for not being coddled I guess, which I found hilarious. They also seem to mention food a lot. For what it's worth the food is pretty darn good here, though my experience is usually over some appetizers later at night shared with friends over a few drinks. Solid burgers, can't go wrong with the fish & chips and their cheese curds are surprisingly good, easily rivaling anything you'd find in Wisconsin. That said I've always seen this place as a bar first and a place to drink with friends that just happens to have good late night food too. The service is good and the people working are top-notch and good at their job, but sometimes the Pub can get a bit too busy as there's just not a lot of competition that truly rivals it downtown. That's what happens when barely anything is open late in the post-covid world and businesses seem to be closing left and right. If you can keep your ego in check you'll find a pretty rare and valuable thing here which is a local pub welcoming to anybody and truly reflecting the full breadth of the local community.

DISCLAIMER: I had eaten at the Side Door a few years ago (Cilantro Lime Shrimp W/Pasta) Me and my neighbor arrived at about 4:45PM, and were greeted with a warm smile and seated immediately ... we were kinda early for the dinner rush so there was plenty of available seating. (NOTE: When we departed about an hour after we arrived, the place was FULL and a line was forming for a table.) We both ordered the 14oz Black Angus Prime Rib (10oz also available). About the same time that we finished the first beer, dinner was served! Simply one of ... if not Thee best, PR that I have had in several years, across 11 states. My neighbor agreed. Both of us now try to plan our Petoskey trips to coincide with dinner at the Door My ONLY complaint is that the horseradish was weak. Actually, it seemed that it had been washed into submission .. totally without any flavor or "bite". The rest of the meal made up for it. (But I *will* bring some nose-incinerating, sinus-creating horseradish from home on the next planned trip.) Service: Superb. We never had to ask for anything. Drinks were refilled with perfect timing. And always smiling. She is an asset to the establishment. Driving Suggestion: Depending on the season and the time of day, if arriving from the North, it can be nearly impossible to make the left turn into the Side Door. Suggestion: Turn Right into the strip mall (KFC, AT&T, etc) and use the traffic light near the gas station to turn left, back onto the highway then a right into the Side Door Saloon for some of the best dining in the Petoskey area. Ample Parking is available. YMMV

My husband and I were looking forward to eating at Jose's tonight. I had called at 5:30 to find out their hours and was told they would be open until 8:00 tonight. We arrived at 7:20 to find the door locked and the lights off. There were still two women working inside. Although they heard us try the door, look at our watches, and look at the posted hours (sign said open til 8:00), they did not come to the door with any explanation. We had driven over 20 minutes to get there. Not a big deal, but not what we expected, especially on a Saturday night. Will we be brave enough to make the drive another time and take our chances that they will actually be open? I'm really not sure. read more

Looking for friendly service, a cold drink and some good Mexican food? May want to try another place. I don't think the person taking the orders said two words to us at all. I informed him they were out of ice in the soda machine only to be informed they don't have ice. I don't find warm iced tea all that refreshing. Our burritos came but we didn't have any silverware at the table. We were told silverware was next to the soda machine. They were out. When I informed the help they grabbed some dirty silverware and washed it off in the sink. I'm not sure, but that doesn't sound sanitary to me. Food was just OK. I won't be returning. read more

Jose's is a quaint Mexican restaurant in downtown Petoskey right by Lake Michigan. There are cheap meters everywhere. It is authentic, indeed. Jose' takes your order, cooks your food, brings it out to you, rings you up and still manages to chat with you in a way that seems, well, authentic. My husband and I had chips with the delicious guacamole and both roja and verde salsas, a tamal, a Chile relleno and the barbacoa enchilada platter with rice and refried beans. Everything was delicious, and it's all homemade and cooked to order. I highly recommend this Mexican treasure. read more
