    Chili relleno

Jose serving up authentic Mexican food for 20 years at this location. It's hard finding decent Mexican food this far north, but this is genuine. My wife and I both ordered the chili relleno dinner. The presentation was beautiful. The chili was a large poblano stuffed with tons of ooey-gooey cheese. It surprised me that it was not battered or soft-baked, but it was great. We ordered chips with homemade guacamole which was some of the best I've tasted. The pico gallo was outstanding, fresh and delicious (you can't beat northern Michigan tomatoes). Great location. You pay after your meal.

Barbacoa tacos. Some of the most simple and delicious tacos I've ever had. A must stop if you're in the area.

Jose's never disappoints. Authentic and delicious, they always on point. Wife and I never come to the area without making a stop to Jose's a priority.

So this was a nice surprise. We were in the bookstore when the person I was with said it was time to eat. I asked the woman in the bookstore if she could suggest a good place to eat. She asked what we wanted and my friend said taco's. She smiled and said, "you have to try Jose's. He's right around the corner. We eat there all the time. ". She was right. The food was delicious. And of course, when we asked for the hot stuff he was happy to oblige. We will most definitely be back.

Tacos were decent. Chips were stale. Horchata machine not working. Kind of a bummer after reading the positive reviews.

I had the steak burrito and it was no better than a 7-Eleven frozen burrito. They seem to be very nice people though.

The restaurant is located in downtown Petoskey so it might be hard finding parking on busy days but I've never had a problem.

We had extra salsa that was not charged. All that was fine. The ambience is even fine. It's louder or Mexican music than what I appreciate but all that was good. The bathrooms were clean. The problem I had was that my chili rolinos we're tough and not done well. I've had better at other restaurants. It seems that I let it slide last time I was in and still gave it a great review and perhaps I should've told them to tell the chef but they were really tough and it seemed like the skin wasn't peeled or they weren't prepared properly. In fact, out of the three of us, no one was extremely pleased with their lunch.

The hostess greeted me and the wait staff was minimal on interaction and there were 5 people standing by the door when I left and not a single person spoke to me. The wait staff didn't check to see how my food was while I was eating or ask how things were when I was done...instead just asked if I was all set. I still had a half of a margarita and queso and chips. The place was not busy...maybe 4 tables total with several servers. The overall appeal inside is nice and it appears to be clean. This place has potential, but for me if you can't get the basics greetings, pleasantries and a wait staff that checks on your food, I'm out. Oh and the margarita was your basic mix style...I really wish margaritas would be made to order rather than the mix that is so sweet to drink. Unfortunately I won't be back...but if anyone is curious the taquitos do not have chunks of onions in them.

Outside the fray of downtown Petoskey, El Cilantro has a much more relaxed vibe. It's close to the state park and ideal for hungry campers or bikers riding from Petoskey to Harbor Springs. The server definitely gets five plus stars. Helpful, fun and attentive. We enjoyed the complementary chips and salsa while waiting for our food. Our shrimp tacos, which we shared, were enough for two or one very hungry person. They looked appealing, served in a casual "basket" plate. Though everything was fine and satisfying, we both felt there was a lack of seasoning that would have made our meal next-level. We are from Southern California and may have higher standards and more experience with Mexican cuisine than most. The level of flavoring and spice would surely appeal to the palate that does not crave much heat or traditional spices. As campers, we will definitely keep El Cilantro on our list to visit for future trips.

If you haven't tried this place...I recommend you RUN and not walk!!…read more I am vegan and I feel there are never enough reviews about vegan options, so here goes. I was traveling in the Petoskey area and of course I always seek out all vegan restaurants or restaurants with vegan options. Initially I wasn't hopeful that I'd find anything vegan in Petoskey and knew I'd starve for weekend, but I was pleasantly surprised (really surprised and happy) when I came across Happy's Taco Shop. And what was even more exciting is they have a separate vegan menu (say what)!!! Needless to say, this is where I ended up. From the moment I stepped up to the counter to first inquire if they did indeed have vegan options (the cashier very nicely said yes they do and hands me the vegan menu) and second to place my order, I was filled with excitement and anticipation to try these vegan tacos! So what did I order? I'm glad you asked . I ended up getting the Vegan Crunch Wrap Royale and the Smoked Potato Taco and OMGEEEE...both were fiyah...and for those who don't know that means they were DELICIOUS ON TOP OF DELICIOUS!!! The flavors were on point and the portion size is plentiful and I had to get a to go box! My husband knows when I like my food because I do a "happy dance" and I was indeed dancing!! Great food, great service, clean restaurant, and most of all GREAT VEGAN OPTIONS so it's 10/10 for me. I hope this is helpful for my fellow vegan peeps

I've tried both vegan tacos and they were delicious, with slight preference on the smoked potato one. My husband had the chilaquiles taco and street taco delux, and he also enjoyed his. The only problem was that they are very small for the price, so it definetly didn't satisfy our hunger. W decided to split a vegan crunchwrap and that was the hit of the entire meal. Very good. Combined with one of the home made salsa, it was awesome. We also had a couple of beers, and this was a great but expensive meal. For that reason it won't be our frequent spot to visit.

No pretension, no putting on airs or trying to impress anyone, everyone coming as they are. You'll rub elbows with local blue collar and service industry people, trust fund kids, wealthy summer residents, everyday folks of all kinds etc. I think a lot of reviews here are from visitors expecting The Pub to be like the Perry Hotel or one of the more tourist oriented places that bends over backwards and caters to summer vacationers. One even mentioned threatening to "Go ski somewhere else" for not being coddled I guess, which I found hilarious. They also seem to mention food a lot. For what it's worth the food is pretty darn good here, though my experience is usually over some appetizers later at night shared with friends over a few drinks. Solid burgers, can't go wrong with the fish & chips and their cheese curds are surprisingly good, easily rivaling anything you'd find in Wisconsin. That said I've always seen this place as a bar first and a place to drink with friends that just happens to have good late night food too. The service is good and the people working are top-notch and good at their job, but sometimes the Pub can get a bit too busy as there's just not a lot of competition that truly rivals it downtown. That's what happens when barely anything is open late in the post-covid world and businesses seem to be closing left and right. If you can keep your ego in check you'll find a pretty rare and valuable thing here which is a local pub welcoming to anybody and truly reflecting the full breadth of the local community.
