I was referred to Dr. Bernstein by my father in law. My father in law highly recommended Dr. Bernstein for his excellent work-- Ultimately, he exceeded any expectation I had and then some. I grew up with yellow calcium deposits on my upper front teeth and I was always so embarrassed by them and I hated smiling. I made a consultation appointment with Dr. Bernstein and he explained a few different treatment plans and let me decide what would work best within my budget. He never tried to sway my decision or tell me what would be a better option. Dr. Bernstein did an amazing job describing the different procedures and I felt so comfortable with my final decision. I ended up at Dr. Bernstein's office after a colleague of his decided my case was beyond his own capabilities. Dr. B had been his instructor at the Las Vegas Institute. By the time I arrived at Dr. B's office I had completed over 1 year of orthodontia plus about 6 months worth of procedures with the dentist who referred me to him. I'm in my forties and have had life-long problems with acid reflux and grinding that resulted in shrinking yellow teeth with no enamel and numerous fillings. My primary interest was preservation of my teeth, not cosmetic appearance. However, the yellowing and dark fillings did bother me some - I could not tolerate any whitening procedures because the lack of enamel on my teeth made these procedures extremely painful. Dr. B has a great bedside manner. He explains everything thoroughly and wants to be certain that you understand and feel comfortable. I have never had a fear of dentists but, if I did, Dr. B would be my #1 choice. He is calm, warm, and reassuring. He provides medication which relaxes you, reduces pain, and makes you forget the time you spent in the chair. This allows him to do a lot of work in just a few appointments. Dr. B ended up reconstructing my entire bite by putting a veneer on every single one of my teeth. This allowed him to lengthen/shorten individual teeth thereby changing the way my teeth come together and reducing grinding. I no longer have sensitivity along the gum line, nor do I have the ugly brown staining where the enamel had worn away. I get frequent compliments on my teeth. My brother is amazed at how it appears as if the veneer comes naturally out of the gum just like a normal tooth. My husband says my teeth look just like they did in high school - large, white, and even. Except for the fact that they are perfect, you would never guess that they are veneers. I had a deep apprehension about seeing a dentist, mainly because of embarassment of the horrible condition of my teeth. Dr Bernstein is compassionate, non judgemental and patient. My mouth was in bad shape and I was truly afraid of the pain I would feel to correct the damage. He completed a detailed assessment of my mouth, created a plan and is fixing my mouth a couple tasks at a time. We always talk for a couple of minutes and then he starts. My comfort is always important to him and he takes great care in his patients being pain free while sitting in his chair. Dana, his assistant, is professional and fun to talk with too. The office and all who work there are lovely. Alison is always smiling and makes the whole process easy. Its a peaceful place and I can actually relax even knowing why I'm there. First I have to say that I am a Registered Dental Assistant, and am quite picky over who works on my teeth. Now that I have found Dr. Bernstein, I am finally confident in my dentist and completely happy to have found him. Here is the backstory...Before I had found Dr. Bernstein, I had 2 crowns on my upper 2 front teeth replaced by another (overbearing and intimidating, and apparently incompetent) Dr. I was completely unhappy with the appearance and fit and was told that there was nothing that could be done to make them better. When I came to Dr. Bernstein as a new patient and asked if he could help me with them, he removed all of my anxiety and worry and made me feel comfortable to be in his hands to fix this problem. He replaced the existing crowns (numbers 8 and 9) and 100% successfully matched the color and shape to my natural teeth, restoring my smile back to natural and healthy. I can't express how happy I was to have chosen him. I came to him feeling broken, and left feeling brand new. I highly recommend this practice and Dr Bernstein. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Bernstein and his staff. I had been to a few lackluster dentists before being referred here by one of my friends. After a short delay with booking (when I inquired, they were in the process of moving to a brand new office...which just so happens to have a gorgeous sweeping view of the Oakland Hills, FYI) I was set up for my first appointment. I'm always a little nervous when seeing a dentist, because from prior experience the cleaning is more painful than it needs to be. However, Dr. Bernstein was an absolute pro, and did an extremely thorough job of cleaning while somehow managing to avoid jabbing my gums and causing any undue pain. I finally went to a 1-800 dentist a couple of years ago, and Dr. M said I needed 15 teeth removed due to perio-disease. I came to Dr. Bernstein after a particularly harrowing experience getting a filling replaced on a non-numb tooth. I was halfway through replacing my front crowns, but couldn't bear to go back to the (well-meaning) dentist who was obviously baffled by the fact that after multiples doses of Novocaine, I still wasn't numb. When I informed her that this had actually happened to me several times in my life, she just seemed even more baffled, and suggested that my anxiety was playing a part in my pain (which I don't doubt!). But whatever was going on, that episode left me shaky and even more anxious about dental work, and I knew I needed someone who specializes in difficult to treat patients to finish the work that she had started! I found Dr. Bernstein by searching the internet for "dental practice anxious patients"! And he lived up to his great reviews and more. Dr. Bernstein and his staff are just wonderful and sensitive. Dr. Bernstein took my concerns seriously, listened when I explained my difficulties with anesthesia, and did not doubt my experiences. I decided to go with the non-intravenous sedation and it was wonderful. When he was not able to numb the problematic area of my lower jaw on the first try, he simply informed that I was wired a little differently, that this was not unheard of, and on the second try, numbed me without a problem. The intravenous sedation left me a little groggy, but the procedures went without a hitch, and I barely remember them. The whole process was ... gasp ... almost pleasant! Now I know that my lower jaw CAN be numbed, and that my problems are not in my head. Well, thank goodness! Now I have awesome looking new front crowns and a new filling and I hope I am done with major dental work for this year! But I will certainly go back to Dr. Bernstein for future cleanings, fillings, etc., despite the fact that he is an out-of-network provider under my insurance, and thus more expensive than other dentists. So last week I made an appointment as a returning patient to this office Allison answered my call and set up my appointment to been seen by doctor Bernstein which was the following week. I was very nervous not because of the services that I was going to get done just because of past experiences. This place is incredible not only were they very nice and welcoming the Doctor was very gentle and made me feel so comfortable that I forgot about my nerves. Wish there were more than 5 stars I could give ! And I have reason to know. A few years ago I had a "full mouth reconstruction" by another dentist specializing in cosmetic dentistry, which involved crowns on every single tooth. It left me with severe speech problems including hissing & lisping on many words. As I'm an active real estate broker, my speech is important & I needed necessary adjustments.The dentist implied it was all in my head & told me my "case is closed." In addition to the cavalier disregard of my speech problems, the dentist used no dental dam (I didn't know such existed to ask for it) or a mask over my nose during the many days of drilling & grinding on old teeth, temporaries, & new teeth, the dust of which I had to inhale when breathing. Whether it is related or not I'll never know, but I ended up with severe, incurable pulmonary fibrosis which will limit me for my remaining life. Recently I consulted Dr. Bernstein about my phonics prob & general disatisfaction with my "new" teeth. We decided to redo 14 of the front teeth. The first big difference was the care he used to protect my nose from the dust when doing the necessary grinding. When, after installing the new temporaries, the hiss continued he actually consulted with a phonics expert who suggested some strategies to try. With good humor & complete patience, and taking as much time as necessary,he continued to make adjustments until my speech is now perfect. He corrected a mess created by another dentist & gave me an absolutely perfect job. I could not recommend him more highly. And that's why I wish there were more stars for him. read more

Nothing could be further from the truth-you get what you pay for and Dr. B is the goods. I've worked clinically with Dr. Bernstein at the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies where he taught other dentists! He's very knowledgeable, has a great chairside manner, and is good dentist, I would recommend him to anyone. I traumatically broke 3 teeth several years ago and have had bonding on my front teeth since 2007. I was just complimented again yesterday on my teeth... something that never used to happen, and I decided to send over my review about the guy who has provided me with this enjoyable change. Dr. Bernstein is the reason for my compliment and he truly is an amazing dentist. I went to him because I had a broken front tooth that needed a second root canal and my front teeth had been capped and I had some problems with enamel loss on surrounding teeth and some gum issues. I had had some very painful prior experiences working on these teeth and was not looking forward to it again. I chose Dr. Benstein because I'd heard that he had great pain management options and did quality work. I had heard correctly. I met with he and his staff and went over all my options. He was great at letting me decide the extent of work I wanted done and I never felt he was suggesting extra work... I had another dentist view my mouth and his recommendation for work entailed a lot more time, money and what I thought would be pain... Dr. Bernstein came up with excellent solutions and I was in and out of his office in just a few visits with an incredible smile. The best part of it was the absence of pain... and wow! that was a new experience for me... and the level of comfort and care that he and his staff provided (the cozy blanket and soothing music along with the medication definitely works). He has a very caring and genuine personality that puts you at ease. It was a very easy process to go through. They gave me some different payment plans and have been consistently following up with me and I am exceptionally pleased with my new smile. My daughter unfortunately broke the same front tooth that I did and presently has on braces, however, once she is out of them... well it goes without saying that Dr. Bernstein will be my choice of dentist to replace her front tooth and finish off her smile. Josh Bernstein has been my dentist for over twenty years. He is by far the best dentist I have ever had. He is knowledgeable, intelligent, careful, and sensitive to patients' fears, anxieties, and sensitivities. When my adult son recently went to him, Dr. Bernstein informed him that he needed an appliance. He told him he would be happy to make it for him, but only after my son got his wisdom teeth removed. I took this as further evidence (in addition to the ample evidence I already had from my many years as a patient) that Dr. Bernstein was not looking for a chance to make a little money at the expense of quality care. He had nothing to gain by insisting that my son have his wisdom teeth out, since he would not be performing that procedure himself. His insistence was based on his sense of what would best serve my son's dental health. I now live 100 miles from Josh's office, but I still make the trip for my twice-yearly cleanings and check-ups. After suffering years of pain and abuse at the hands of hack dentists, our entire family will go to no one else for any dental treatment. They do not accept insurance and that is how, in my opinion, they are able to keep their medical ethics intact (no pressure to 'cut corners'). "at your best time". after all are you not the customer, are you not important, are you not dealing with pain and stress. the principal of "customer comes first" is not lost here in this office. more things his office doesn't have. the fear and chaos surrounding most dentists' offices. impatient office personal which regards you more as a hindrance and added work then a valuable customer. now with what his office does provide. proven experience and expertise. these are not to be underestimated or taken for granted. trust me i have had many a dentist and spent a small fortune on my teeth and at the end of the day i rarely felt that i received my monies worth. a great infrastructure. dr. bernstein is the sum of all his great knowledge, experience and technique.and equally as important is his colleagues that support him. his dental hygienist is patient, upbeat and a artisan. his dental assistant is also upbeat and highly skilled. if he needs to refer you to a root canal specialist as what happened to me several times you are in equality great hands. i know that most people forget about there teeth, because of well, lets be honest, the pain of the teeth usually does not equate to the pain and expense of going to a dentist and the time involved. however we are talking about bones in you head that you need to use daily and that can be quite painful when not working properly. well you can probably find a less expensive dentist somewhere and pay once and if not done properly twice and sometimes a third or fourth time as well. trust me i've been there and done that. it's like going to a second rate doctor to mend a broken bone (are you and your health not worth more). trust me dr. bernstein will not only do your work properly but perfectly because at his core he is as great a artesian as he is a dentist. lets face it doing things once will always be less expensive then having to redo the same thing over and over again especially if you factor in the pain as well. as i mentioned earlier i did have a medically emergency (a cap that i had put on a tooth was coming loose). so i called dr. bernstein and he was able to see me, actually earlier then i could se him, so we booked a time that was convenient for me, yes that's right convenient for me. so i arrived and i felt that no matter what was going on with my tooth that i was in good hands and that was worth the price of admission. oh by the way, my tooth was guaranteed by him so there was no cost. also i was in and out within 45 minutes or so, no pain no swollen mouth. in my mind, there is only one dentist on this planet that i can trust with one of my most valuable assets and that is dr. josh bernstein. kevin d. read more

We have a special needs adult daughter, so dental care is challenging. Dr. Bernstein was recommended to us by a friend, and we are so thankful that we found him! He and his staff are warm and friendly, listening to all of our concerns with understanding and patience. I am not a patient of Dr. Bernstein, I applied for a job positon they had for a dental assistant in March. But if you read my review it will show you what helpful people they are. Allison, who I believe is Dr. Bernsteins Office Manager/secretary refered me to the Pacific School of Denistry to get my California X-ray licsene when I told her I signed up to get it at Sacromento's Dental school the following week. Being new to the area, I never heard of Pacific. Not only did that info save me about 4 hours in traveling and getting a hotel room to stay over night for a 2 day course, the same course was $400 cheaper compared to the one in Sacremento I signed up for. She went online to look it up and wrote everything down for me. In additon, she gave me disposable x-ray holders to use during my class. After I got my x-ray license, I applied for the position Dr. Bernstein. I was beyond qualifed for the job, I knew their computer software and digital x-ray system like the back of my own hand. I used it everyday for 5 years straight. The reason why I wasn't qualified was the fact that I never worked in a CA office. A few other doctors actually came out and said these exact words so bluntly as they did. I did apprciate their blunt honesty. Rather have honest than a lie She then gave me a number for a dental temp agency to help get my foot in the door in a California office-note the fact that-she didn't have to go out of her way to look up and give me that information, she had a busy work schedule to keep up with, but gave me her time. Besides all of that, I got a life experience. I re-did my resume blocked out the whole 6 years experience out of state info and presented myself as a new dental student looking for a carrer in dental, it worked, I got a job stating I have no experience with new Ca dental certifications and that I'm a native californian.If it wasn't for Dr. Bernstein's office I would of never, or it would of taken me longer to know how to land a dental job in a new state.The Dr. and Allison seem like they like to help others get on their feet in the dental field and that is a good quality. I cannot speak for his dental work since I am not a patient,or assisted him in a procedure, but if they go the extra mile to help out a young girl get her dental career on track and it does't benefit them any, then that shows, they most likely go the extra mile for their patients as well. I do have to say one thing- all the responses to the one bad review from "Thersa B", give her a break please. Maybe the gold crowns might have been an better option for her, I don't know. But anybody would be upset if their crown broke after getting them, and sometimes, unfortunatly these things happen. But to the person who told her to quote "go choke on something you wrench"-come on! That is inmature and threatening. If you don't like a bad review you let it be. I was appauled to read that and this office apears classy and I don't think they wold want that writtent to her either, even if she did write a bad review. To sum it up, they were very helpful in giving me guidence on what to do with my career and I now have a great job.
