I have never been happier with a provider. Dr. Butler is kind, patient, and thoughtful with her recommendations. The hygienists are super thorough with cleanings. The facility is clean and hygienic. I've always had teeth issues/weak enamel and a lot of sensitivity, and my mouth became a little more complicated a few years ago with onset of a chronic inflammatory condition that affects my mouth (OLP). The staff here is SO patient and gentle, and go above and beyond to help me avoid too much friction and other triggers. I feel very comfortable and trust their care. If you have weak or sensitive teeth, need a dentist who is gentle with the needles, and/or especially if you have an autoimmune/inflammatory issue affecting your mouth and need some extra care, I highly, highly recommend this place. read more

I cannot recommend this place enough. They came recommended to me by my friend (thanks, Erin!) as I was literally shaking after an awful interaction with another dentist in Emeryville. Dr Butler and her team were amazing to work with, from the little details (asking what my pronouns were in my first interaction with Dr Nyugen) to guiding me through a specific issue I had with teeth grinding. Dr Butler and her staff fitted me out for a device (deprogrammer) that seemed unlikely to help, so unlikely that I actually asked for a refund which they graciously offered. Only to have me reach out to them and apologize, because it was actually helping with my grinding movements throughout the day, not just at night. They graciously gave it back to me and followed up with concrete next steps for what I hope will eventually help with my situation. Unfortunately, I've since moved out to Concord so I need to find a provider closer to me. I've never had a dentist cut me this deeply while doing a cavity fill. There's a huge hole! I'm likely to be in pain and unable to eat for several weeks until this heals. What is the most egregious about this error is that the cut is so deep and big yet there was no mention about it. I realized it was there because I can feel the huge hole with my tongue. At least own up to your mistake. Going to the dentist is already a traumatic stressful experience but to not tell the patient or provide advice for after care is negligent. read more

I was recommended Dr. Butler from a friend of mine, who raved about her on Facebook. She called her "an awesome punk rock dr." and, since that is exactly the kind of people I like to be around, when I developed a tooth situation after YEARS of no dental coverage and shamefully neglecting my teeth as a result, I wanted someone AWESOME and non-judgemental looking at me. That is EXACTLY who Dr. Butler is. That goes for everyone that I have met at Oakland Eco Dental. My tooth situation was looked at, and it was basically WWIII in my mouth. Dr. Butler was undaunted. She also helped me immediately. Anyone who has ever had tooth pain understands how your life can completely turn around for the better if someone is there to help. I am not religious, but bless the damn LORD for that assistance. There literally isn't much more in life quite as painful as an abscessed tooth. I had 4 of those. Like, ALL of them decided to give up the ghost at the same time. How lucky am I? Anyway, she filled my cavities, and let me know I needed 4 root canals. These she could do, but she had a colleague that she works with that could do it quicker and probably less costly, so she hooked me up. She did let me know that she would, if I ended up in too much pain before he could work me in, that she would do it. She gave me her personal cell number and let me know that she would help me with that at ANY moment, if I needed. This Dr. HAD MY BACK. Tears of joy, I tell ya'. This started a journey for me. I got such good dental care that I was inspired to continue. I decided to get Invisalign braces to improve my overall dental health. I got a deep, deep cleaning to improve my dental habits moving forward. I am in this comfortable office, helped by these dedicated, fun people all the time now, because I was inspired by my entire initial experience to start taking care of myself better. It was that good. I have been without insurance, and I now have it, and I have been seen in this office under both scenarios. I know how hard it is to afford dental care, and how that makes us tend to put it off. I know how it is to make choices based on that financial reality. Whatever your situation is, don't let it stop you from getting the care that you need from Oakland Eco Dental and Dr. Butler. If you just have a tooth that is killing you, and you need bare bones intervention, OR if you want to dedicate more to your teeth because you are able to, Oakland Eco Dental is a good choice for either scenario. So, I hate to leave negative reviews before I've actually BEEN somewhere but, that's my story this time: Just trying to get an appointment to be seen here was the most tedious thing I've done. I'm a lawyer. I know tedium. I was excited by reviews and location was super convenient but 10 emails later, I give up! OK. First: you want me to send sensitive personal identifying information to you via email? When no one from your office has spoken to me? ....ok. And not 1 simple, easy introductory email. I liked the staff here, but I felt like my dentist was over-prescriptive, and kept tacking on tons of expensive procedures without taking new x-rays or talking it through with me. I've been coming to Dr. Butler for a few years now, and I am consistently impressed by everything about this office. They run on time. Their staff is awesome (shout out to Marquesha, Julie and Doctor Butler). They communicate well and are supportive of my ongoing hygiene in a way that inspires me. Right so it may be that the nitrous hasn't worn off but I have to say that I've never had a better experience with a dentist. I had a dental emergency over the weekend and even though they aren't accepting new patients there was a last minute cancellation on Monday. I came in and Dr. Butler was amazing. She didn't have the time to do the procedure I needed and referred me out to a dentist that was willing to see me on the spot. They called around until they found someone who could see me. fast forward to today and I had the most gentle experience having 3 teeth worked on. They have TVs in their ceiling, their rooms are a whole mood, and the staff is all incredible. I may have told her I loved her as I left but again, I'll blame the nitrous. I wish I'd met Dr. Butler sooner. She also recommended that I treat and heal my teeth before more invasive procedures. I also need to note it's been like 10 years since I wrote a review but I could not drive away from her office without making sure I acknowledged her dental prowess. ps parking sucks. I got a ticket. I have had several wisdom teeth cavities filled here by Dr Butler but this review is mainly for Julie the hygienist! Oh my goodness I have never met a hygienist who seems to care about my teeth as much as Julie! She not only cleans very thoroughly, she gives detailed instructions on how to improve your cleaning "technique" which no other hygienist has ever done for me. For example when I first went in for a cleaning, she told me I was cleaning the front well but neglecting the back of my teeth! Accurate, for I never even knew you had to brush the back O_O After I switched to an electric toothbrush and began cleaning the front and back, she advised me to pay extra attention to the area along my wisdom teeth, and more recently told me to clean more towards the gum line. For the first time I really feel like I am improving and my teeth are getting cleaner! Julie always inspires me to really keep my teeth healthy :) On to the rest of the office - Dr Butler has been extremely nice and flexible IMO. In the US most people get their wisdom teeth removed but that's not the case in Asia, and even though I got some cavities I had been slacking (didn't visit the dentist for 1.5 yrs) so I wanted to give my teeth another chance. Dr Butler was incredibly accommodating and didn't pressure me to get them removed as other dentists do, which I really appreciate. Price wise my work offers Blue Shield so all my cleanings are covered. Cavity fillings are about $20-30 or so, I believe because my insurance covers the silver fillings but they only do the white kind, which is slightly more expensive. Haven't had the fillings for long but so far they've held up fine. The rest of the staff is very friendly and responds promptly to emails and inquiries. I also want to say - they do NOT ask everyone to do deep cleaning! My boyfriend also comes here and they recommended a deep cleaning for him but not for me. Knowing Julie and Dr Butler I'm sure they recommend based on the condition of your teeth NOT for money... after all if they just want $$ why wouldn't Dr Butler pressure me to get my wisdom teeth extracted? In any case a great experience thus far, hope it continues long into the future!! read more

I was a patient at Oakland Eco Dental for years, and I used to recommend them to my friends and family until we had an unfortunate incident. I was getting a routine filling when the dentist slipped with her drill and hit another tooth. It happened to be my only tooth with a crown (that had also been done there). My crown broke and broke most of my tooth with it. At the time it happened the dentist sat me up and said 'don't freak out, but your crown came out' I didn't freak out at all, I couldn't feel it because I had Novocain anyway so I was just like ok, what do we do now? It turned out that too much of the tooth broke off to reaffix the crown. The only recourse was to get the roots and remainder of the tooth extracted and then get an implant to replace it. I was bummed and anxious about that but knew that accidents happen and I took the referrals they gave me for oral surgeons to do the extraction and implant. I had questions about the cost, because I thought since they had broken my crown and tooth they would help pay for the surgery I now had to have. I was very wrong. After paying $200 just to have the referred surgeon look at my tooth, I learned insurance would not cover it. I called the office to see if there was any chance of them working something out with me. I talked to the dentist that did it, and while she was very sympathetic she was sure to not apologize or admit fault and in the end said I was on my own because I signed a waiver. In the background Dr. Butler could be heard saying they would give a whole 5% off the cost of physically placing the implant or something like that. She made it out that it was my fault because the crown was loose. She did the crown herself only 2 years before. The cost of the extraction and bone graft I needed was nearly $4000, so I am currently paying that off and saving to get the actual implant all while having a missing tooth. After being a patient for years I was so disappointed with how I was treated and the utter lack of accountability or integrity. The funny thing is that I wasn't even mad when it happened, I am just so disappointed that I was treated like a hostile enemy just for asking if they would help pay for their mistake. I get it, I apparently signed a waiver (something on an iPad they stuck in front of me when I was already in the chair). I for some reason thought they might still be interested in doing the right thing. I will know better in the future I guess. read more

Yuuuuuuuup. Did Dr. Butler give me a root canal that was not only PAINLESS but was she so adept that when drilling through my 20 year old bridge she didn't even chip the porcelain?? Yuuuuuuuuuup. If I could give these folks more than five stars, I would. They're just awesome. I picked them based on a Yelp review from someone who was afraid of dentists; I was terrified to the point that I'd had no dental work, not even a cleaning, for at least 15 years. After the initial consultation and cleaning (which took 3 visits because of all the years of accumulated gunk) they put together a plan, with options, and walked me through it and I was able to decide how I wanted to move forward. It was complicated, with lots of crowns and fillings, but they made it so easy on me. They were sympathetic about my terror, and took really good care of me at every appointment. The billing part was easy - once they had my insurance info, I never had to think about it again. The invoices were super clear and easy to understand in terms of how much my insurance paid, vs. what I needed to pay. And finally, these people are just flat nice. I never thought I'd see the day when I looked forward to visiting the dentist, but my fear is gone, plus I have a normal mouth and feel great about it. Hence, I informed them that my insurance was going away and I would soon not have coverage for my next cleaning. I was told four times that it would be $75.00. Came in for my next cleaning and guess what? I was told that the cleaning was $99.00. Not cool. I still have nothing but love for Dr. Kim + staff but that's just not OK and not on the up & up. I had not visited a dentist in quite some time because since childhood it has always been an invasive and trauma filled event seemingly conducted with a just a hint of sadism. My experience at Eco has been the polar opposite. While in the chair I am hearing phrases like: - "are you doing ok?" - "let's take a break" - "don't forget to breathe" - "let's talk about your gum pockets and measurements" You may even get a long overdue crash course on how improve your dental hygiene techniques. We are in this together but you have to do your homework. All of this may sound routine for most reviewers but trust me there are patients out here who are at this moment being terrorized by health care professionals. Our physical comfort seems to matter less. So Eco Dental should be commended for having exceptional intuitive skills in recognizing patients coming from difficult past dental experiences. Favorite dentist OF MY LIFE. I'm one of this dentist-phobic people, I usually cry all the way through the dentist, even a cleaning. I hadn't been to the dentist in years and I finally went here and had a lot of work done over a year or so - they made me feel safe and comfortable (and distracted with big TVs on the ceiling and netflix). 1st appt. yesterday w/follow up communication today and based on what I've experienced so far, this is really is a 5 star practice. The Oakland Eco Dental office space is actually a converted single story home. You feel different just walking in. Not unlike eating at a great restaurant, Dr. Butler and her staff know that creating the right environment is an important (and often overlooked) step towards providing their patients with a positive experience. There is plenty of space in the bright, modern office and Marquesha at the front desk is friendly, helpful and totally efficient in ushering the new patient through the admin side of things. The exam, x-rays and cleaning not only felt like a breeze, but I left feeling like a 1st year dental student! Nicole took the time not only to explain everything she was doing and why, but to answer my questions and suggest ways to improve my dental health routine. The gear they use is the latest and greatest, fully modern and talk about extra touches - the lighting was intentional and calming plus there was even a huge HD monitor built overhead into the ceiling showing nature videos! Dr. Butler was efficient in her evaluation, took the time to answer questions, and inspired my confidence based on our conversation. You can tell she's an expert and that she, along with the rest of her staff, care about your health and your experience as their patient. Sometimes there's a "hustle and sell" vibe that can happen in dentistry but my experience with Oakland Eco Dental was the exact opposite. The practice is beautiful and clean, and they have TVs mounted on the ceilings so you can watch Netflix while you have your teeth cleaned. It had been decades since I had been to the dentist, & I was faced with a lot of dental work that needed to be done. I felt really embarrassed that I had so many cavities, some of which ended up needing to be root canals. I'll never forget when Dr. Butler said, "It's not a reflection of you as a person or any kind of failure on your part. This is about access." I'm pretty sure I cried. I've actually cried a few times there. Sometimes out of anxiety, fear, frustration, embarrassment. And sometimes out of joy, gratitude. And I have always been treated with compassion, kindness, & respect. I have never been made to feel bad for the current state of my teeth. Dr. Butler is so sweet & caring. She goes out of her way to make you feel comfortable. She patiently listens to & answers any of your questions or concerns. She is cheerful, attentive, & hands down the best dentist I have ever been to. I've had to go back for multiple visits & I actually look forward to seeing Dr. Butler & her phenomenal staff. Highest possible recommendation. I've been coming to Oakland Eco Dental for many years and have always received the best in dental care, with excellent and attentive support staff. I have to admit that I was born with poor "dental genes" and like both of my parents, it seems like I have to constantly get work done. I don't enjoy some of it, like the shots and drilling, but I keep coming back to Dr Butler because she is so warm and caring, and often makes jokes.
